My/Our Holiday Review:

Our stay at these aprtments was some what hampered by the owner who took a total dislike to children and was some what rude to the women, he was unhelpful and arrogant, the pool was small ane only one meter at the deep end ok if you are an adult just cooling off but totally unsuitable for children a list of dont was diaplyed in broken english ie no balls no jumping no lilo's the list went on, no food or drink other than the food bought at the hotel bar which was very under stocked.

The owner pestered guests into purchasing air con an example of which is that at 0630 am he was asking my wife about air con we had only just arrived and were very tired after travelling all night.

We found the area was excellent and we stayed in and around the Adell Beach Apts pool to which we were made welcome.

My/Our Holiday Review:

We were a little apprehensive about going on this holiday as we got a very good deal but struggled to find any specific information about the actual resort of Adele.

Accomodation - excellent. The room was bigger than we expected it to be and the air conditioning (5 euro per day) was good for cooling down whilst getting ready to out for dinner and during the warm nights.

We were warned that there would be noise from the main road which runs directly behind the studios and it is noisey mainly between 7 am and 12 pm but it didn't bother us, we didn't have a bad night's sleep during our stay.

The staff were very attentive and would go out of there way to ensure that you enjoyed your holiday. Costos and his wife Demitra and there son Demitris only speak a little English but enough to get you through your stay. We had many a night in the bar drinking til the early hours.

The rooms were cleaned regularly and the linen was changed at least 4 time during our 2 week stay. The bins were emptied every couple of days.

We had snacks at the bar during the day mainly greek salads and ham and cheese toasties but they were very nice and not too pricey.

Resort - There are plenty of nice taverna's and bars in the resort and nearby Plantanes, which is a short walk along the main road. Our favourite was Alexandros - We didn't have a bad meal there and we went a few times during our stay, everything is reasonably priced and the bill was always less than we thought it would be. We couldn't fault the service or the quality of the food. The best thing to do is try them all, don't be put off by the smaller ones they are equally as good.

Cafe Greco was a nice place to have a drink and listen to some decent music. They have live music and other themed evenings to keep you entertained.

Trips - We only went on a couple of trips we went on a bike ride down the mountains to Kournas Lake - I know it sounds energetic but it was mainly down hill and it was a good way to see different parts of the island. I was a little unsure about going but I thoroughly enjoyed it.

You can stop whenever you need to for a rest or a drink. There is a guide at the from and the minibus bringing up the rear so if it gets too much you can get in the bus and ride the rest of the way. There were a few scheduled stops for a tour round but I won't spoil that for you.

We also went to the Samaria Gorge, we had planned to walk the whole lot but decided against it and went on the Easyway trip instead. I'm glad we did, it was a very long day we were picked up at 7 am and were not dropped off in the resort until 7.30 pm. The idea is that you can walk into the gorge as far as you like and then come back out. It was a very hot day so we just walked to the entrance and had a look then spent the rest of the time on the beach.

My/Our Holiday Review:

The Adele II Studios are very basic. I would recommend eating out as the Tavernas are all very close and have lovely food at reasonable prices. The studios are very clean and family run by Costas and his wife 2 daughters and son. They are lovely people. There is a small pool and bar with snacks which stays open until you leave it!

The only downside is the traffic which can be rather noisy but you do get used to it. The beach is gravelly with a few rocks and waves. You can use any pool on the beach belonging to other apartments and hotels which is nice.

The actual town of Rethynmon is a lovely Venetian harbour with great restaurants too. Harbourside ones cost a bit more.

All in all we had a lovely time. If you meet Costas send him my love. Enjoy.

Hotel Adele Beach is situated right on the beach, with a busy Strip of shops, bars,& restaurants behind the Hotel.

It is about 4 mls from Rethymonon, less than 1 euro on the local bus that runs every 20 mns until allmost midnight. (Must buy tickets at shops, hotel etc.NOT on bus)

The Hotel is a small low rise building with a good Swimming pool good restaurant, good beach(beware of flat rocks in the sea ,for at least a mile each side of the hotel Take shoes or sandals for the water.)

Rooms are very small and very basic,we had room no 101 that was right above the laundry very noisey, but asked at reception to move and was told it was no problem, had a much quieter room.

Rooms near the reception area complained about an electric generator, that started up at all hours of day and night.

Lots of cheap car hire with full insurance no hidden extras we booked with Alianthos 167 euro for aweek a small car!

Samaria gorge 27 Euro but only for GOOD walkers.

Santorini 65 euro 6am to 11-30pm but a good day.

Nice Area shame about the rooms.

My/Our Holiday Review:

First time to Crete. We grabbed a cheap last minute deal.Read on this site how lucky we'd been to end up in The Appollon.

Have to agree with almost everything said before.Rooms were clean ( recently painted? )spacious ( for three people)and reasonably equipped. We didn't go for the optional Air Conditioning as Crete was going through its hottest two weeks in 100 years ( 45'ish ) leading to power cuts, renderig air-con useless.

We had a room far enough from the pool bar to be quiet.Of course we visited the bar on several occasions ourselves.Yammas Lefti.

The main street is a bit of a drag strip at all times but you soon get the hang of it.We were told it was quiet for the time of year but it suited us fine;just busy enough to have an atmosphere.

We ate at the pool bar a couple of times for convenience around lunchtime but the food was basic ( great chips though ).

We found the food to be universally good throughout the resort and tried lots of restaurants. We visited Verginas twice and its sister Verginas2 once. The Special Cretan Plate at Verginas is a full-on eating experience and I'm 16 stone! We heardcomplaints at the appartments about the service in the restaurants but we didn't experience any problems. You need to remember you're in Greece!

We visited the beach but found the sand to be uncomfortably gritty and the current in the sea very strong.Worth a look though.

We took the obligatory taxi trip to Rethymno ( still 6e )and found the old town and harbour to be charming.

All in all I couldn't fail to recommend the resort and appartments to anyone. On top of everything else I came back with some money!

Well , what can anyone say abouth this place ....... it is Clean, Tidy , well positioned and the most welcoming hotel on the island !

After visiting the Apollon 4 out of the last 5 years we a maybe a little bias... but I dare you to sit at the the bar and not make lasting friendships with ex pats , locals and fellow holiday makers!

Its a simple holiday...hassle free !

The staff are fabulous.... even if some don't like cooking chips for you 5 minutes before their shift ends..((some of you will know who I mean !!!)

..and as for Lefteddis...(or Lefti as he is more well knownn) he is the biggest Malaka in the whole of Greece..a fantastic barman and an absolute legend ! That simply doesn';t say enough about the man.... he is a Diamond !

See you again soon

My/Our Holiday Review:

This was our first visit to Crete. It will not be our Last.

We made an excellent choice in the Apollon and Platanias.

Rethymnon is about 55 mins transfer from the airport just sit back and enjoy the views.

The Apollon has very friendly staff and the rooms are very spacious well maintained and very clean. The pool area is large and we never struggled to get a sun bed at any time of the day. A small shop at the apartments was very competitively priced.

The walk down to the resort centre took us around 10 mins and about 15mins to walk back up the hill. This walk was needed on the way back in the evening following the excellent food to be found in Platanias. Just made us ready for a couple of drinks at the hotel bar before bed and with Lefty the barman mixing some great drinks and making everyone welcome it became difficult to retire early.

The beach was very good and sun beds with a brolly costing 6 euros.

Rethymnon was well worth a visit especially the harbour area.

We love Greece and Crete has become one of our favourites with much of the island still to see.

It is easy to see why people go back to the Apollon year after year; we net several who were returning again and again.

We had two studio apartments and as far as studio apartment go we were pleased with them, basic but clean. We could get beds round the pool no matter what time we arrived at it. If you are going to stay here take a tea towel with you as they don't provide one (or egg cups or a bread knife!).

The apartments are a short walk to the main area which was good as we were in a quiet location and didn't get disturbed by traffic noise.

Places to eat are - The White Lady (a must!) great food and three times a week they have greek dancing nights which are really good fun. The Taverna Garden has good home cooking and there is a great Indian restaurant called Shambala (we went twice, great curries).

My/Our Holiday Review:

This was our first time to Crete and we were not disappointed with the resort or the apartments. The Apollon is set back just far enough to be out of the small cluster of tavernas and bars but within walking distance. On an evening it took us only 7 mins to walk down. The apartments are very clean but lack storage space. We had a 1 bedroomed apt for 3 adults and 1 child and there was only 1 largish cupboard in the bedroom for storage and a couple of tiny drawers More drawer space would be a help. But this is the only fault we could find with the apartments. We were above the bar and did'nt hear any noise on a night.

If you like any English breakfast we found the Kellari to be our favourite 5 euros for the works.

Other favouites on an evening where the White Lady, Marem and you must go to Vergina for the garlic sauce which is served with the bread and also we found there Kleftico to be the best! If cocktails are your thing then go to Axos.

Finally we weould recommend the little yellow train for local excursions. Brilliant guides and an unusual way to see the local surroundings.

My/Our Holiday Review:

We enjoyed our stay at the Appollon - rooms very clean and spacious (studios) and if I could have lifted these apartments and put them in the main street of the resort, it would have been excellant.

The location did not suit us at all, we ate and drank mostly in Adele so was bit of a walk (esp walk back up the hill). The shortcut (underpass) was defo lots quicker but far too dark at night to use.

The pool area at the apartments was lovely and the staff were very helpful and friendly. Snacks were ok, much much better in Platanias or Adele. These apartments also did not do breakfast whHRC was a bit of a pain.

Adele and Platanis were great resorts with prob slightly more bars in Platanis.

White Lady was excellant for a meal at night, breakfast was also good but best breakfast by far was at Christina Apartments, also enjoyed here at night for a drink, good atmosphere.

Would defo go back to either of these resorts but not to Appollon, only because of the location.

My/Our Holiday Review:

First time in Crete- Fantastic. The Apollon Aparthotel is situated about 800 meters up a small hill in the resort of Platanias, away from the busy strip of the resort centre. A good location if you are looking for a quiet nights sleep.

The hotel is very clean and well maintained with bed linen and towels changed every four days and the rooms cleaned every other. The pool and bar area is great, everything with an eye's view, especially good when you have young kids. I thought that the hotel was entirely british, but it had a mixed culture of guests (they kept themselves to themselves, not through a lack of trying on our part). My praises go out to Leftie( I think thats how you say his name)the barman. He was very polite and helpful at all times; nothing was too much trouble. We found at the end of the night after we had been out for a meal, most of the british families would all seem to congregate in the bar area for a few drinks before bed. We have met a few good freinds here. Small and friendly enviroment.

With regards to the centre of Platanis. Very good, despite its busy road. Plenty of restaurants and bars for you to enjoy, with loads of little shops on either side of the road. Trying to cross the road was dangerous at times. We tried to visit different restaurants each night, but the one we were drawn back to on four occasions was SKYPARK, absolutely brilliant and one of the cheapest.

N.B. do not take the shortcut to the right at the bottom of the road of the appts, as at night it can be very dark ( OK in the day). Stay to the left down the hill, it has a pathway which goes under the flyover with a few hotels and houses on the way, so you have some light at least.

The old town of Rethymno was about 5km away, only cost 6euros by taxi. A pretty resort, especially around the old venetian harbour and back streets. Eating out at the harbour is very expensive, especially when you are having the fish courses.

Overall the holiday was brilliant. Would recommend it to anyone.

My/Our Holiday Review:

Clean and fairly spacious accomodation set just a few minutes back from the main strip in Platanias.

Five minute stroll will take you to both the main street and also down to the beach.

If out walking at night, stick to the main roads as if you take a shortcut under one of the underpasses, it's very dark and you can't see where you are walking.

Only complaint I really had with this accomodation was that I was placed in a studio to the side of the pool bar. For the first couple of nights I was kept awake by other guests laughing and joking until 1.30-2am and music from the bar was rather loud for that time also. I complained and asked to be moved to a quiter room, I was moved but I could still hear the noise coming from the bar!

If you are staying here and want some peace and quiet to relax (like I wanted) then please request a quiet room with mountain view as they are MUCH quieter!!!

Platanias itself is good for everyone, singles, couples, families. There's something for everyone here.

I can recommend Kellari,Taverna Garden and White Lady for eating out.

Also staff at the Axos are very friendly!

I worked in this area a few years ago and went to catch up with some friends and also to relax.

Sadly I couldn't relax at this accomodation.

I am returning to Platanias twice next year and for MANY years to come but I will not be staying at the Apollon.

We would definately recommend these apartments, even the middle of August very pleasant. Loads of room around the pool. The rooms were clean and we has a lovely view of the pool. The staff were really nice and so helpful, nothing was too much trouble. Platanes is small but loads of places to eat that are good value for money. We visited skypark a few times and had fantastic meals that were soooooo cheap.

Hired a car and visited knossos - very hot, take a hat. Elephonisis beach is beautiful but quite a long drive.

Would return to these apartments, very relaxing.

This was our second visit to Rethymnon and the wonderful Apollon Apartments.

Rethymnon is a wonderful place, there is loads of things to do for absolutley everyone, day and night.

Platanes, which is where Apollon is situated is a friendly place with lovely people. It has a lovely little strip of taverna's, bars and restaurants, there are a lot I haven't even visited them all yet!

I recommend Axos for a drink (Manos and Yianni the barmen are great) and White Lady's for food (charming family run restaurant). This strip is only a 5 minute walk from Apollon and Platenes' beautiful beach is only 10 minutes away!!

Lastly I would like to mention the great team who work at Apollon, especially to Maria and Zak who were a great help this year!!

Also, if you do go to Apollon or even Platenes you must visit the pool bar and Lefty with his infamous free drinks!

We will be returning to Apollon next year and for a few years to come!

This was our first time in crete and didnt know quite what to expect as we normally travel to icmeler in turkey. However we were not dissapointed it was a lovely island the people were freindly.

Our apartments the apollon were very clean and well furnished with an excellent pool area.

The village of platanis was small but still had enough to do to keep you going until the early hours, we recommend skypark for food and the acropolys bar for a drink. Rethnymon was five mins from our aparts and was well worth a visit with its winding streets full of bars and shops and pretty harbour. however watch out for the germans at the taxi queue on your return visit as they do not seem to understand the art of queueing and things can get a little heated!

To sum up however this was one of the best holidays we have had and will definatley be going back .

My/Our Holiday Review:

A last minute booking left us with a feeling of apprehension upon leaving blighty, and after a horrendously long journey we finally made it to the Appolon at 6;ooam. After a few hours sleep we decided to take a look around the place. The apartments were very clean and spacious. on venturing to the pool at about 11:30am we where amazed to be able to grab a bed each right next to the pool bar (handy!) The pool bar serves basic snacks, which for the price are ok and the drinks are reasonable too. These apartments catered mainly for the british whilst we were there and a good mix it was too.

The resort itself is a long road of shops and tavernas which all seem to have good food. i would certainly suggest the Vergina and Sky Park as worthy of your attention. The places on the harbour tend to be a little more expensive and of less quality than others we tried in rethymon, but the setting more than makes up for it. The reception staff are very professional and for tips on where to eat Zak is very good!

All in all a very relaxing break in nice surroundings with great food. Our final word is for Lefty the barman who is a super host, although his freebies are a little more potent than they taste!! Taxis cost 5 euro to Rethymon and will pick you up at the hotel. One word of caution I would offer is that on your return from rethymon to the Apollon the Taxis do not seem to understand the concept of queing, which can lead to some confusion!!!

not normally ones for returning to the same hotels but I would make this the exception to the rule.

Yammas!!

Firstly i have been going to Rethymnon for 15 years and untill now all very happy memories. The Euro has now made a few people very greedy and very rich.4 years ago a taxi ride from the airport to the apartment at most 26 euros Now a gob smacking 60 euros. The apartment at the Aris Marie 70 euros for the week. Now 320 euros sleeping one person.A true pint of beer 7 euros and vodka and coke 5 and a half euros. The first night three people eating a light meal with drinks 187 euro.

Shopping in the centre 3 belts total price 3 and a half euros i gave hime 4 and i could not get the change and it went on and on. A 7 day holiday at this apartment, eating else where cost me 700 euros and thats not including the flight or any extra!s. The saddest thing we found out how dagerous the sea has now become 8 deaths this season and the same amount saved. 5 life savers for one beach, but thats been kept silent.I have made many many friends over the past 15 years. This holiday was from 4.10.05 untill 11.10.05 The final test every drink i had at Aris Marie i put a tick on the back of my hands, when my bill arrived the charge was for eleven drinks i had only had four when i showed hime the back of my hand he said sorry i made a mistake.

I could write a book about this holiday all the real lovely people and places i met and found, with one person in mind Aris the owner of the bar at the top of the Salmaria Gorge.

One, see more of the mountains and out of the way places.

Two, ask the price first because all the trust has gone.

Three, stand your ground and dont be bullied.

We went to the Astali in Rethymnon in May 2007, this was approximately our ninth visit to the same Hotel. We no longer go through a travel company, we just book our flights, e-mail the hotel and go by taxi from the airport, saving about an hour on the journey to the hotel. Chrysanthi, Marios and Yani all make your stay memorable. You are always given a warm welcome. Nothing is too much trouble for them. The hotel is extremely clean and well looked after. It underwent a complete make-over last year.

The hotel is ideally situated for the beach and also for a stroll around the old town.

There are plenty of excellent restaurants, but even after so many visits we are still finding little gems serving excellent authentic Greek food,so it pays to walk that little bit further to seek out the traditional tavernas. Don't be put off by the little dark alleyways as many of these contain these little treasures of eating places.

We found that the beach is clean, safe and is child friendly.

This holiday was very good value for money. The breakfast was a buffet style and very fresh. The owner and her sons were very friendly and the rooms were small but extremely clean.

The hotel does not have a pool but is really close to a beach where the sunbeds are not too expensive. Although the hotel is set on a busy main road, the traffic stops throughot the night and does not keep you awake. I found it really interesting, as I love to people watch from my balcony.

There are lots of restaurants and a few friendly bars, just enough to entertain you without blowing your eardrums.

There are not too many english at this resort and many greeks holiday here, but this made it more interesting for us.

We would certainly return as we do like value for money and this place certainly has that

The Astali Hotel is a small and family run hotel. The family went out of their way to make it a very pleasurable holiday. It was centrally located on a busy main road with plenty of facilitiess nearby. 100 yards to the beach and close to the Marina.

The resort - Rethyminnon is large and spread out with plenty of things to do.If you get the chance take the little train trip to the Myoli Gorge - walking shoes essential but very worthwhile.Stavros Restaurant is the place to eat - excellent food and friendly staff, relaxed atmosphere on this beach front location. Night life is busy but based around cocktail bars rather than discos and nightclubs.

We will definitely go back some day

Our first few days at the Astrid where fine the hotel was spotless and the owners and all the staff could not have been friendlier, but that was all to change as we decided we wanted to see what crete had to offer(big mistake in the owners eyes). The owner then took to ignoering us, not giving us invites to his entertainment nights and basiclly makeing us feel unwellcome espcally as we walked through the bar at night to escape.

The area itself has nothing much to offer, there is a friendly taverna by the sea "BAR 11",we used this. The bus stop across the road will get you the bus to rethymnon for 1.50 euros each and the taxi home is 10 euros this is rcomended as there is a lot to see and do there.

If you catch the bus on the same side as astrid it will take you Panamo this is a lovely greek village worth a bus ride or two as the beaches are nicer there.

All in all we had a fantastic two weeks there dispite the owners best to ruin it, all we can say is if i gives you the treatment just laugh as you walk through the bar show him you are going elsewhere!!!

the apartments were clean and comfortable but the location left a lot to be desired not suitibale for parents of children who need something to entertain them.

pool closed at 6pm leaving children a bit bewildered as the sun was still shining brightly and the tempetures well in the nineties. food in the resturant was generally good except for the tinned veg!! although a bit more expensive than the other tavernas, staff were lovely all in all enjoyed my holiday but did take the bus into the Adele area most nights for a bit of variety Rethymnon was also 12kms away on the bus and we had some beautiful meals in the Lemon tree garden resturant

Being the first week of the season the resort was very quiet...peaceful! The Astrid Apartments were lovely, clean & Dimitris & Eva as well as their staff were wonderful! The food was fantasic & even my little boy who is incredibly fussy cleared his plate every night. I would recommend these apartments to families & older people wanting a nice relaxing holiday in very pleasant surroundings.

The trips offered by the reps were not good, the Greek night we went to was apalling & very expensive....When we go back we will hire a car & do it ourselves!

Will definately go back....

Just got back from the worse place I've ever been. The apartments ok clean etc.

1 key to each apartment, reception locked up at 12, bar closed at 12, no TV on unless you beg and not allowed to use the remote control.

No air-conditioning turned on in the TV/restaurant/reception.

We had a 9 pm transfer so went for a shower in some kind of store room asked about a couple of towels and got refused.

I had the front room of the apartment block which meant no sleep until the bar next door had closed. This being the only bar open in the hamlet most nights I gave up trying to sleep and went down to the bar.

It was far easier to join in than complain. I did get to sleep around 5 am most nights only to be woken up by the guy who lives behind the bar who seems to enjoy repairing wooden pallets around 8 am.

The beech was full of rubbish and I got charged for using the sun beds. Although I did use the other beach apartments facilities and had no problems, welcomed by the owner had some nice meal. No charge for these sun beds

My/Our Holiday Review:

We chose this holiday, because we wanted to relax and enjoy sun and sand - and that is what we got, but if we had wanted any more then this was not the palce to go!

We also chose a self catering holiday, because in the evenings we wanted to explore the local area. Unfortunately the owner of the hotel made it very obvious to all that he expected you to eat in his restaurant even though his prices were double that of the tavernas and bars down the road. He was very intimidating and us and others who stayed in the hotel felt that we need to escape without him seeing us. The last evening we decided to eat in his restaurant for ease, but unfotunately his was very rude and insulting to us, because we had eaten elsewhere.

There are people who go back to his hotel year after year, but I would not advise staying here unless you wish to stay in the hotel permanently and use its facilities and pay the prices. I cannot fault the cleaniness of the hotel or the beaches taht are only five minutes walk away, but would advise anyone who wishes to explore the surrounding area or eat in different places to not consider this hotel for your stay.

My/Our Holiday Review:

A lovely resort all in all, the Astrid is 11km outside the main city and this is welcoming, the village of Stavromenos is quiet with a handful of taverna's and hotels, so it does not overcrowd yet your are only a taxi drive away from the action (8 Euro's) There is plenty to do, although excursions are expensive and not very well sold by the operator.

The old town of Rhethymnon is full of charm and the usual bars, resturants and shops, all at reasonable prices, something for everyone with wonderful views.

The Astrid is a very nice and clean hotel, you are encouraged to eat there (as pointed out) but some of the remarks about the managers being rude to you I found false, for instance we only ate there once in the first week and yet they were still charming and helpful.

If you do have more nights in then they begin to treat you like family, and while it is more expensive than the local taverna's they make up for it in free gifts.

It has a sizeable pool and is a perfect sun trap with sun all day.

One downfall is the beach, the astrid has it's own private beach which is well kept, but unfortunately it is 5 mins walk along unkept roads.

Evening entertainment is good but does finish a little early (3 or 4 times a week), however you can watch this and then go out.

If you are after a peaceful holiday first with a few trips and nights out thrown in, you could do a lot worse.

My first trip to Crete and I would certainly go back.

Bravo.

My/Our Holiday Review:

Like many of the guests who arrived at the Astrid we had a late booking with accomodation on arrival basis. The Astrid is situated just off Cretes main East West highway, about 12 Km from Rethymon. 40 minutes on the local bus or a taxi for about 9 euro will bring you to the charming harbour area of the town. Plenty of cafes and bars and wonderful narrow streets full of Cretan character to explore. Not a lot nearby: a couple of tavernas (mostly empty), a couple of typical tourist shops, a smattering of small hotels/apartments and an ugly underpass which leads to a couple of sand/stony beaches. The countryside around the area is stunning (as is the case with Crete generally) and ideal for those who want to explore the many little hillside villages dotted around the area.

The Astrid itself is generally clean and well maintained.

The studios are large and clean (though we found ants to be quite a problem) with airconditioning available for 30euro per week.

The astrid has its own resteraunt offering a varied but relatively expensive menu, a pool bar selling relatively expensive drinks and entertainment 4 nights per week.

The owner: tracked the dining and drinking habits of his guests with a fervour that seemed a cross between Greek patriarch and Basil Faulty. I kid you not!!!! If he likes you then youre his Honoured Friend and his Friends come back year after year....BUT DONT DONT DONT GET ON HIS WRONG SIDE!!!!! We certainly felt guilty about leaving the hotel to dine or drink elsewhere and were encouraged to hang out by the bar with the odd free drink..however when a group decided to have a singsong on their last night (having been encouraged to do all their drinking and dining on the premises over the course of their stay) he decided that those who had gotten 'cheap' holidays (his take on late bookings/accom on arrival) were disrespecting his fullpaying guests and should have taken themselves off to the taverna next door. He then nodded in the direction of some of his guests with the words (Ill be glad to see the back of them)..the 'hooligans' (sic) in question were a couple of middle aged women and a handful of twentysomething girls!!!!!! While noisy high spirits can certainly be cause for complaint from guests looking for a quiet holiday the unprofessional manner in which managment dealt with the 'problem' reminded me of an episode of Faulty Towers.

To be fair, the owner (when in good humour) and his lovely wife Eva were extremely helpful and the complex certainly has the personal touch. Full marks to Joy, a lovely english lady who works as customer rep, for her interest and friendliness to all the guests. This is a complex where one could travel alone and be sure to find friendly conversation from both Joy and her husband Alex and the bar/hotel staff.

Some other points:

No shower facilities at the pool, the showers were reached by descending a set of tiled stairs, these tiles along with the tiles around the pool itself became extremely slippy when wet. From a safety point of view I think management and airtours who use this property should address the problem asap.

No paths on the road from hotel to beach which makes walking with young children, buggies etc quite dangerous.

Some apartments are located on third floor but there are no lifts available so very difficult when hauling luggage up and down.

Very little for children/teens to do at or near the complex: I noted that drink was served to a 14 year old girl, though its up to parents to monitor this and I certainly wouldnt fully blame management.

Finally, the Airtours Rep: his welcome meeting consisted largely of a spiel to sell his own merits as Rep of Excellence. He was available at the complex most days but I and other guests felt that since the hotel is small enough, he might have made an effort to check in at the pool/bar area occasionally to greet the people who pay his wages.

*On day 1 of my holiday, noting the lack of resort facilities I wanted an immediate upgrade! On days 2 through 6 having gotten used to the situation I was practically booking my next visit! On day 7 I decided that the managers unpredictability was way too daunting and that I would be doing my nerves no favours by visiting there again!

My/Our Holiday Review:

Accommodation

The apartments were basic but spacious and very clean. A kettle was provided, which I didn't expect and the maid cleaned 6 days out of the 7 I was there. There was no problem with mosquitos or any other insects.

The pool is quite small but while I was there there were adequate sun beds and again the surroundings were spotless. The pool shuts at 6.30pm to allow cleaning and for the outdoor restaurant to be set up. I didn't notice Dimitris shouting at any of the children for being loud - and at times they did make quite a lot of noise!

The restaurant is slightly more expensive than other tavernas but the food is good and varied. Dimitris and his staff were happy to accommodate my fussy daughter's requests so it was a price I was willing to pay. I didn't notice any abruptness to myself or to others following occasions when I didn't use the restaurant.

I found Dimitris to be very friendly. On a couple of occasions he rounded up the children and took them to the beach to build sandcastles etc, and he and his wife were happy to give advice or to chat. Whilst there I spoke to several families who were regular visitors - one couple had been going there for 16 years.

Resort

There is little around the Astrid - 5 mins walk through an underpass will get you to the beach and further along the sea front are a couple of Tavernas. There are more restaurants and bars toward Rethymnon - about a miles walk. It is very quiet and definitely not for those wanting a lively holiday.

Excursions

I booked 2 excursions. The first was a trip on a Pirate ship. This was OK but a bit boring for myself and daughter, standard boat trip stuff. The second trip was to a waterpark near Chania. The rep said the journey took an hour - but it took two! The park is not especially big. I had picked up 2 brochures for 2 other parks (Aqua Splash and Water City) both of which looked bigger. A tip for the Chania park - as soon as you get there collect tyres for the water rides. We didn't and soon all the tyres were gone and we couldn't go on the rides until about 3.30pm! The food is quite pricey here but we did enjoy our day.

Overall

We had a good holiday. The apartments had everything we needed, including a small play area and a pool table for the children. The people were friendly and the weather was lovely. I would definitely consider returning although I think that a week was long enough, if going for a fortnight there might not be enough to do locally. A nice place for a quiet, relaxing family holiday.

My/Our Holiday Review:

We arrived at the Atlantis Hotel after having been moved there from the Minos Mare due to overbooking. It had been described as a "beach hotel", which in this case meant the other side of a busy road. My first impression was disappointed as this was far from what we had booked 6 months previously, but by this time we were tired and just wanted to get into a room for the night.

It is described as a 4 star hotel, which I think it probably was when it was first built/registered, but now it has become what can only be described as tired and jaded. Our room was very clean, roomy (it was a triple room) with good air-con and a good sized fridge. There was also plenty of storage space for the three of us, which with triple rooms can be a bit of a rarity. The let down was the balcony. It was a "private" balcony in the extreme in that we could not see out of it, in the same way that no-one could see into it! We were on the 2nd floor (no lifts) and the shrubbery had grown up from the ground floor pool area and was even invading the balcony space!

The pool area was nice and clean and there were always plenty of sunbeds available.

The small buffet restaurant was uninspiring, bur airy. Each evening there was only a choice of two main courses and a few overcooked vegetables, although the greek salad was nice. Inevitably we ended up eating out, which was a waste as we had booked half board. Mind you the local tavernas were good value for money.

Having said all that, the staff were very helpful and friendly and took great pains to sympathise with us as they knew that it was not the hotel that we had booked in the first place.

The upside was that it was just up the road from the Irini bar, which generally had a very good atmosphere, good well-priced cocktails and friendly staff. Well worth a visit.

A tip before you go into the bars is to look at the cocktail prices before you enter, as the menus are usually outside. Along that strip you can pay anything from 4.5 euros to 6 euros for the same cocktail.

As we were generally unhappy with the standard of this hotel (not being the one that we had booked) after some really good help from the Medhotel manager, we were moved after 2 nights into the Rethymno Palace hotel which was really good (see separate report)

My/Our Holiday Review:

This hotel would be superb, but for a number of annoying factors.Firstly,it's only 20 mins walk from the centre of Rethymnon (a large town with loads of shops) along the built up seafront past tourist shops, then 200 yards up a side road.Second, the food is delicious, varied and loads and loads of choice for both evening meal and breakfast. All buffet style and sit where you like.BUT,it's all cooked Greek-style.Third,the hotel, rooms etc are spotlessly clean.Fourth, the beach is only a minute away down the side road and there are loads of car hire, restaurants, tourist shops all nearby. But now the bad points - the hotel is quite noisy, with the front being on the urban main road into town from Heraklion direction and the noise/fumes are constant. Some corridors are open-air,which lets in noise to other rooms.Rooms mainly overlook side streets or the pool, which is small and barely used.Strangely, all pool view rooms come only with a double bed,and if you want a pool twin then one of you has to make do with a sofa bed.Half the pool view rooms had a balcony so small you could only sit on it sideways.

There are few other English guests, mainly German.Consequently, although the tv got 20 odd chanels none were in English, but about 5 were in German! The waitresses were unfriendly unless you were a German guest.Generally, the hotel facilities were poor with just a small pool/sunbathing area and small pool bar and lounge, and so was the entertainment which, when it was on,was happening inside the bar so that you couldn't see it unless you sat there and bought a drink. The hotel lift was too small to fit 1 person and 2 cases at once. So the hotel is excellent to use as a base, but not so good if you're expecting lots to do.

CAR HIRE - go to Traffic Rent a Car (down to the seafront, turn right, then 200 yards). The car was fine, had free a/c, a cd player, full insurance, nice staff, and cost £20 less than anyone else at £51.10 for 3 days and £65.30 for 4 days for the cheapest car.Chania old town is a delight, but it's a large sprawling town and hard to leave because there were no signs pointing to anywhere from the centre.Free parking in the Fortress car park near the harbour.Don't bother with Heraklion. All the free, easy sea front parking has been done away with leaving just a small stretch that's now pay and display, bought from a kiosk. It's mainly expensive clothes shops anyway, with only Accesorize,Virgin Music,Zara and Marks and Spencer that are well known.Driving south,Spili was touristy as was Plakias,Agia Galini and Matala which had caves, beach and loads of shops.Portland Holidays/Thomson Holidays who go to the Hotel Atrium were dire.

When we checked in (we were the first) we asked for a window seat but were told there were none. On the plane there were over a dozen free.Transfer coaches no longer have a rep on board, and the coach to return home turned up 45 minutes late at the hotel, whereupon on getting to the airport we were told the flight was 5 hours late. The whole flight were all bused to a restaurant called Pharos a mile from the airport and herded into a giant, noisy smokey room where we waited hours for a meal to be served which was disgusting.First course was a plate of fatty meat, second course was a plate of beetrut.Main course was more meat! Why couldn't we just have had an extra 5 hours in the resort instead?

My/Our Holiday Review:

Unlike most of the accomodation listed as Rethymnon in the brochures this hotel actually is in Rethymnon itself. It is about 15 minutes walk into the Old Town and 200 yards from the beach - but it is not on the beachfront. Hotel Atrium is excellent value for money. There were no children staying at this Hotel and it did appears to be more geared for couples and and an older clientele. It is well maintained, clean, with free air conditioning (rare in Greece) and the food is excellent and plentiful - assuming that you like Greek food. Don't expect British fare! The staff are very friendly and helpful. This Hotel is the sister hotel to Theartemis Palace which is next door and twice the price!

The pool area is very small but most guests seem to spend their days out at the beach so sunbeds were never a problem and nobody attempted to reserve them with towels etc. The pool bar did very good lunchtime snacks.

The only disadvantage is that this hotel is on a very busy main road. This means that if you have a room at the front you will be woken early by the traffic noise.

Rethymnon itself is a busy working town and ferry port. It has a fantastic beach and amazingly pretty old town and Venetian harbour. The rest of the town is built up and workaday in appearance as is any medium sized Greek town. It is a good base for exploring western Crete. We recommend walking the Samaria Gorge - but be warned- hiking boots are a must if you don't want to suffer. The White Mountains are as dramatic as the Alps and a trip to Chania is a must. Use the local travel agent excursions and NOT the tour operator if you want to save money and see the real Crete.

My/Our Holiday Review:

We couldn't find any reviews on the Axos apartments before we went (although just read a couple since returning) so thought this would be useful.

We were pleasantly surprised at the location of the apartments. Positioned right on the main strip, close to the supermarket, cash point, beach, bars and resturants. The family who run the apartments are very sweet. The actual accomodation is fine for a 'beach hoilday' and the aircon is very good.

There is only one main street in Platanis and I would recommend it to couples of all ages and families. I felt slightly sorry for the few young singles I saw looking for fun and frolics as the town could be very quiet and extremely 'coupley' , even in the middle of high season. The best bar on the strip has to be Axos- luckily for us! It has a friendly vibe and great loud music. It was the busiest bar on the strip and stayed fairly busy until 1-2am.

I would recommend eating out in Rethymon centre as the prices are roughly the same as the resturants on the Platanis strip but the choice and quality is far superior.

We regularly took the bus into Rethymon for better food and a more lively atmosphere. We would then get a cab back to the apartments (to meet with friends in the Axos bar) for only 6 euros.

Overall we had a great holiday, we met another lovely couple whom we spent a lot of time with. We came back feeling chilled and we are missing it already!!

My/Our Holiday Review:

The apartments are a bit basic and well used, but they are adequate and have an excellent shower and robust air-conditioning.

The family who run it are very charming and helpful. If you want to prepare meals - forget it! Cooking facilities and utensils are poor. Who wants to cook on holiday anyway? At least there is an efficient fridge and a good kettle which is all we needed. The room was clean, although they do not make beds properly and linen replacement is hit and miss. However, they respond willingly if you complain nicely. Nice touches include a large bookcase to exchange your English books and free use of the internet.

There was plenty of sunbathing space and sunbeds by the modest swimming pool and the wonderful beach was only a short walk away and remote from the bustle, with reasonably priced sunbeds and umberellas and decent beach bars. Platinias is a "one street village" on both sides of a very busy through road with many restaurants and a few small supermarkets. There is an efficient bus service every 20 minutes to Rethymnon, but do not forget to firstly buy your tickets at a supermarket or the driver will not let you on. In fact, the bus service from Rethymnon, right along the north coast to the other two main cities is good (regular air conditioned coaches and a lot cheaper than going with tour operators' or advertised "outings"). Car hire is best to visit the beautiful interior, but do shop around for rates including no-excess insurance.

When you go out for a meal, do not bother looking at menus outside restaurants more than once - all offer almost exactly the same choice with very little price difference. Look at the restaurant (or taberna) itself and see if you like it. All in all we were satisfied and we had a good time, despite the extremely irritating timeshare canvassers.

Kosmar were fine.

Lovely accomodation on the main street of Platanes, just outside of Rethymnon which is easily reached by local bus (1.10 euros each way) Lots of bars, shops, supermarkets, bakeries and tavernas all within walking distance.

Beach is also a two minute walk away by road straight over from the apartments, shingle beach in Platanes. Head in to Rethymnon town for sandier beach.

Apartments are family run, family are very nice and give you a very warm welcome and make you feel at home for the whole time you are there, nothing is too much trouble for them. Lots of people go to these apts time and time again, met one man who has been there for the last 20+ years!

There's a bar at the hotel which can be busy at nights, also serves food up to around 4pm. Gold shop also on site which guests get discount on and new for this year is an ice cream shop which serves carte d'or. Just what you need to cool down after a few hours down on the beach!

Apartments nice and clean, I was in studio which was quite big and nice sized balcony. Rooms do have air conditioning unit (payable locally at approx 10 euros per day) Pool is a good size with plenty of beds and chairs, room for everyone!

Definitely staying here again, booking to go back in september! Would recommend to all, young/ old/ families/ couples/ singles etc.

We were given a room on the ground floor which we wasnt happy with as we never feel safe on the ground floor and obviousley were on road level, we slept there as was exchaused and they couldnt move us, but changed to the 4th floor a day later. Overall the rooms are pleasant, we went in September and were the only English in the hotel, mainly Germans. We didnt use the pool as all the Germans started at us the once we did as we obviously stood out.

I must say this we are not moners but found that if you are not staying on a self catering basis, like us the noise is bad in the morning, as everyone gets up from 7.30 for breakfast, then the maids come round, dragging the furntiture etc. and you can even here the water everytime someone turns a tap on! and although it states the hotel is on a quiet side street, that it is, but the mopeds are so loud even with the balcony doors shut. Obiousley this probably only applies if you are on the road side, maybe if you have a room over the pool it wouldnt be so bad.

We went to the beach everyday which was nice, sunbeds were 8 euros for 2 beds and one umbrella, this would work out alot for two weeks so we bought an umbrella ourselves.

There are loads and loads of shops and resturants you would never get around all the resturants whilst you are there, as there are so many, most of them offer the same menu, which is a shame. The harbour is lovely for a good fish resturant, they will hassle you abit to go in theres though, bit pricey but you should folk out once or twice.

Apart from all the bars there was no other stuff e.g quizz, karoke etc.. which was a shame as bar after bar when you dont drink alchol is abit boring. (I must say here entertainment in hotel is for older folk and usually consisted of one man playing keyboard - if you get my drift)

We found a really nice resturant and staff called something along the line of Tzaaski they do indian, mexican, italian and greek food and cause we ate there alot they always gave us things for free.

GOOD

Beach was nice

loads of shops

loads of resturants

Lovely fishing harbour

BAD

Noisy hotel

Hotel Bio - Rethymno Town

My/Our Holiday Review:

My girlfriend and I have just returned from a great 2 weeks at the Bio hotel in Rethymno Town, which we booked direct. Even though Rethymno Town is about 60 km away from Heraklio it was so easy to reach as Crete has an excellent bus service in place and the journey only cost us 7 euros each way each.

We were pleasantly suprised with the Bio hotel, as it has changed a lot from its advertised pictures on its web site and in the brochures. It has been freshly painted on the outside and the rooms were very modern looking and clean. It is excellent value and the staff are extremely helpful and very friendly. We were even called into the Front Desk Manager's office for a chat about how we were enjoying the holiday, which we appreciated. One of the main features of the hotel though is its locality.

Rethymno beach is long and sprawling and a lot of hotels are a taxi ride away from the town centre. The Bio was 30 seconds walk from the beach and a pleasant 5 minute walk into town along the promenade. All in all, it was a top hotel and excellent value for money. I always try new places each year but me and my girlfriend have already decided that we want to return to the Bio Hotel next year!

The town itself is wonderful. I'm fed up with frequenting these resorts that are 10 years old and have no character so Rethymno Town was a breath of fresh air. It has so much history and is so beautiful it just added an extra dimension to the holiday. We ate out each night for variety and there is plently to choose from. Whilst the restaurants in the Venetian harbour are expensive, it is worth trying at least once or twice for the great seafood and the view. Other good restaurants we ate at were Erofili and Melia, i think, by the fortezza, which has a lovely view over the town. The outer harbour walkway is littered with other less expensive restaurants, which are still an enjoyment and boasts great views of the main harbour.

Finally, i'd just like to say that Rethymno beach is lovely and sprawls for miles. Deck chairs are cheap and the owners offer a waiter service. My only moan of the holiday was that on a few of the days I found little bits of rubbish floating around in the water but i suppose you get that anywhere now.

The hotel, the beach and the town where second to none and i would definitely recommend it all.

My/Our Holiday Review:

If you are looking for a holiday with a diference try Blue Dreams. We had a dream of a time. With the help of Litser, George and the family we were made to feel as welcome as old friends. the apartment had fantastic sea views with the sound of the sea sending you to sleep every night. The hospitality at the pool bar was second to none with food and drinks at all times of the day and as long as you wanted at night. If you are willing to join in with your hosts it feels like a holiday with a Cretan family and you are guests in their home.

The surounding area is OK for tavernas but not much in the way of bars. But don't worry head back to Blue Dreams and enjoy the atmosphere.

Just returned from a week at the Bueno.

This is the best resort and Hotel we have stayed in in all of the Greek Islands.

Very friendly people, nice pools (3), nice beach, cheap drinks.

Taxis to Rethymnon still only 6 euros.

We ate at places at the top of the road and also the White Lady which was at the top of the road, turn left and walk for about 10 mins.

We went on the yellow road train trip to the monastry which was good fun for 15 euros, and the 3hr boat trip to the caves which was poor for 25 euros.

We had the hottest weeks weather in Crete for 110 years topping 47 deg and very humid with it. Too hot!!.

Beware of the brollies down at the beach pool. They do let the sun's rays through and you will get burnt.

Seemed to be alot of Germans and Dutch about. The Dutch were very nice and friendly whilst the Germans were load and up early with the beach towels.

Book it you will not be disappointed.

My/Our Holiday Review:

Just arrived home after an incredibly wet 24hrs and early hours flight (no sleep)! If we did'nt have to fly on the cramped planes hol's would be sooooo much easier.

Anyway we had a fab, relaxing, hot - (v hot over 30 every day) holiday at Bueno in a great setting within Motakis village placed with a 2min walk to beach to the left and village 3mins to right. Flowers everywhere spectacular colours and masses casscading all around.

Room 203 large and modern with lovely balcony situated on end as people walk by and birds in the fir trees. Air con an extra (which should be standard) TV and hairdryer. Not to impressed with room maid service as toilet cleaned twice but sink, shower and bathroom floor never cleaned during the week - there is a large toenail cutting behind bathroom door and hair around toilet which were there when we arrived- wonder when it will be spoted! spoke to cleaning lady through sign lang - but no luck. However loved the room.

Platanais village has busy main road with tavernas etc either side - although noise cannot be heard from appartment. Not many shops but Rethymnon 15mins in taxi (6euro) has all the shopping you will need. Busses not good in May we waited and waited and waited.

People very friendly and if they see you today they are your best friend by tomorrow. Holiday suitable for all but esp families as well catered for ie; pools, swings/park, beach/cafe bar

We ate at Kallarie opp supermarket most nights, as we were made to feel so welcome by staff and customers- most of whom were returning visitors also the food was amazing. Stavros is a must -fab host great atmosphere open all hours be warned the nightcap shots - they are a killer!!! We met some amazing people from many nationalities each with a story to tell. Not very many brits - mostly Scandanavians - Greeks want more Brits as we spend more money apparently. Great brekfast at Taverna Garden - Vassilie the host a lovely chap who loved to talk, we had several cups of tea with him yesterday watching the rain.

We wanted a totaly relaxing hol without too much running around and got exactley that and more- would def return with teen kids but hire a car next time and visit mountain villages. Took a day trip to Spinalonga ( read the island) 57 euro with first choice so we booked with independant Kaldos tours for 24 euros- a good day out. Be warned to check prices that tour rep offers.

Anyone booked/booking this hol will not be dissapointed a lovely place to spend precious time off work. Happy hols.

Great appartment complex - small, quiet, access to 3 pools, one of which is next to the beach, excellent beach, and central in Platanes.

Not too many Brits go to Beuno, and it has an excellent atmosphere. Beautiful setting with many flowers. Bar at the front, outside.

Apartments fine, though as with all, I (as an adult) would not want to sleep anywhere other than the main bedroon (ie not on the 'sofa-beds' in the living area - ok for kids I suppose).

Staff all friendly, food in the Tavernas of Platenas was great. Can geta bus to Rethymnon to see the old town. Recommend to hire a car though - there is much to see in Crete.

My/Our Holiday Review:

The Bueno Apartments are in a quiet area near Rethymnon which is called Platanias situated down a very quiet road called the Motakis Village a one minute walk from the beach.

(coach transfer was 1 hr and 15 mins - it was better than we had anticipated with good roads and wonderful scenery).

We were made extremely welcome. We visited Bueno for two weeks on half board eating breakfast at the apartment restuarant (self service and fab choice). The evening meal was at their taverna across the road which was a refreshing change with fab food and excellent friendly service. Drinks extremely reasonably price too. Greek night was at the Bueno, a bbq (fab again!), we all joined in and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves meeting lots of different people.

It mnade a refreshing change to go on a holiday in August and being able to get a sunbed even as late as midday as people here did not get up early to claim their spot! The pool at Bueno was smallish but suitable for size of accommodation which kids loved to splash around in and play ball games etc. Also there was another small pool next door and another larger pool just along the road which was fun and next to the lovely sandy beach with wonderful mountain views.

The only (very very small downside if you have young children) is the fact that the sea was extremly choppy and most days had the amber flag flying. It was fine for adults to go in but to get into the sea you had to go over stones (SHOES A MUST) and then there was a drop. The sea was nice and calm for three days out of fourteen but the other days 'we rode the waves!'. Plus side, beautiful sandy beach.

This is a quiet resort which is exactly the choice of holiday we wanted and I cannot think of anything bad to say about it. I never like to return to a place twice but I can honestly say I would definitely like to return to the Bueno. I just wished they had a Pool table which would have been nice for the teenagers, there was table tennis but Pool would have been nice.

We went on a couple of road train trips which were fun, one trip along the coast and one up the mountains - both really fun and worth doing.

We also bused into Rethymnon town and got a taxi back - visiting the fortress (excellent) and harbour.

Crete is a gorgeous island, really green and flowery with breathtaking scenery. The locals are just so nice and friendly and the Bueno was good value for money. Supermarket, shops, tavernas and a ceramic centre just up the road.

A WONDERFUL RELAXING HOLIDAY WHICH WE WOULD RECOMMEND, MADE ALL THE MORE SPECIAL BECAUSE OF THE WARM WELCOME FROM THE LOCALS. THANK YOU TO EVERYONE FOR MAKING OUR HOLIDAY SO GREAT.

My/Our Holiday Review:

When we first arrived, tired and exhausted on a coach from Heraklion airport, I was very sceptical about the area we were staying in as it looked unfinished and a bit shabby, but my worries were unfounded as it was the complete opposite!

We stayed at the Bueno Aparthotel which is part of Motakis Village - a road where all the hotels and tavernas belong to the same family but which doesn't feel like a complex, just a lovely little village as thr name suggests! The staff were very friendly and helpful and spoke briliant English which was a bonus.

Our apartment (which was in the newer section of the hotel) was spacious and clean, although it only had the bare essentials in the way of cutlery and kitchenware. The bathroom had a shower, toilet and a basin big enough to swim in!!

Our friends had an apartment above the reception in the older section of the hotel which was also spacious and clean (they had a separate bedroom whereas our apartment was open planned), but which was slightly older with a slightly smaller bathroom.

The hotel itself was very pretty and very clean, with flowers all around, a bar area and a pool area. The bar was also during the day for buying drinks and ice-creams, but unfortunately did not sell any food. For this we either bought snacks from the supermarket which is about a minutes walk up the road or we went to the beach bar which served both meals and snacks at reasonable prices.

For dinner we ate 10 nights out of 14 at 'Kellari' which is a restaurant just at the top of the road from Motakis Village on the main street. It is owned by Stavros and does extremely delicious food at a very good price with lots of choice, from your traditional steak, chips and salad to Greek dishes and even apple pie and ice-cream for dessert!

We hired a car but found that driving into cities (like Chania!) was very hard as the Cretan roads are nowhere near as good an the ones in the UK with hardly and road markings and where road signs are sparce! After talking to other couples on holiday at our resort we also found that the bus service is quite good and that there are many reputable car hire companies near the Bueno so we need not have booked it before we came out. However, the car did prove very handy for popping up into the mountains, where we visited Kournas Lake (the only fresh water lake in Crete where you can swim, snorkel and hire 2 people pedloes for 7 euros), Moni Preveli (Preveli Monastery) and Plakias on the south of the island. Unfortunately we didn't get to see Preveli Gorge as it was far too windy that day :o(

Rethymnon was a 5 minute taxi ride from our hotel and cost just 5 euros each way (about £3). We found it very good for shopping but quite expensive to eat in. Watch out for people who stand outside every restaurant or taverna and try to get you to come in to eat or drink something. They are very annoying but if you say 'no' and walk away you are usually ok! We unfortunately didn't get to see the in Rethymnon fort but it is supposed to be very good.

Other sites to visit:-

Elafonissi Beach - on the south west coast of the island, Elafonissi is like a tropical beach! The water is clear and blue (although a bit chilly in places!) and the sand in tinged with pink where is meets the water. You may want to take something to sit on and a paraol for some shade as there were no loungers or parasols to rent on the beach when we went and the sand got everywhere as it was quite windy. We went on a coach trip arranged by First Choice which cost about 40 euros per person.

Chania - absolutely beautiful Venetian town and ex-capital of Crete - my favourite of the towns we visited. Great for shopping and has many restaurants around the harbour (be careful as some are expensive). You can also take a horse and cart trip around the town where the horses wear hats!!

In all the holiday was wonderful, if a little hot at times (in our second week it reached 40 degrees C!). If you are prone to burn I'd advise you not to go in July or August which are the hottest times of the year or to wear very high factor cream as five minutes in the sun is enough to burn you quite badly. The Cretans are very friendly and most speak brilliant English.

I cannot wait to go to Crete again as it is so beautiful and relaxing. We would happily return to the Bueno as we found it to be centrally located without being in the middle of a town and very homely.

Top Banana!! :o)

The Bueno Apartments are set on a side lane in the Platanes area of Rethymnon, just a minute from the beach. We found the studio very clean and the whole complex had a lovely feel - pretty flowers in the gardens and lovely swimming pools. The staff were very friendly and helpful. I was worried about the location initially but this was all we could find as our previous holiday was cancelled a few weeks before departure - we were so pleased! This place was really quiet and peaceful (unlike the hotel we should have been staying in).

Rethymnon is beautiful, lovely Venetian harbour with excellent, if a bit expensive, restaurants. Try the Knossos, one of the smallest and cheapest places on the harbour but the fish was superb. Rethymnon has plenty to explore including the Venetian fortress. Well worth hiring a car in Crete as there is so much to see and do - Phaestos ruins were great as was driving through the mountains, visiting little villages and the South coast. The walk through Samaria gorge was challenging as it was raining hard for the first 2 hours but in May the flowers were out so the place was beautiful and made it all worthwhile.

I can't wait to go back to Crete as there was so much we didn't get to see.

Just returned after a weeks stay at Camari Gardens, apartments very clean all staff are very friendly and will go out of their way to make you feel very welcome(nothings a problem to them).

Must be honest though if its an action packed holiday you want this is not for you, its in a very secluded area not much to do I would advise you to hire a car.

Minimal cooking facilities so we used the restaurant on site everyday but that wasn't a problem as it saved on the washing up.

Would definately go back for a chilled out holiday without the kids as there is only one pool table and a couple of video games to play.

10 out of 10 for friendliness and cleanliness.

My/Our Holiday Review:

This was our third visit to Camari Gardens and i can say it wont be our last, once again the family made us feel really welcome and greeted us like old friends. The original buildings have now been joined by new apartments, swimming pool, snack bar and supermarket, which had basic foods, all tastefully decorated and in keeping with the older apartments. Some new faces but never-the-less welcoming. The food although basic is good and good sized helpings the salads are especially tasty. You need never eat out.

Rethymnon is an wonderful place to wander around with plenty of shops that cater for tourists mostly selling the same trinkets etc. and a trip down to the resturants on the sea front is to be recommended, with differing styles and atmospheres. The downside is trying to find a parking space for an evening meal we had to travel around the town several times and then ended up parking quite a way from the resturants.

My favourite place is Georgioupoli, several resturants, a wonderful beach and some lovely little shops. We always visit Souda Bay to see the War Cemetary so peaceful and beautifully kept.

We will be going back to Camari Gardens, its a wonderful place to chill out completely.

Crete is a great place to visit but it would be so much better if they improved the airport, too small, not enough seating, and the baggage collection area is a joke.

I started to write how i experienced this holiday, but realised i could go on forever complaining about it!

From the gruelling travel from the airport to the almost total isolation of these apartments from civilsation, bar the quite unfriendly little village at the top of the hill nearby, who are probably fed up with all of us tourists descending on them despereately looking for a change of scenery and food to the samey old thing at the camari. To get anywhere you need either a bus, taxi or to hire a car. The latter is the better choice and crete is relatively easy to drive around as compared to some other places we've visited. Taxis and cars are unpredictable, and some of the drivers were intimidating and unpleasant. Dont think you can go walking. There's no where to walk to unless you go inland due to the location of teh camari practically on teh crete version of a motorway. The local beach is dirty and the sea had a slick of scum on it. Rethymnon is about quarter of hour away by transport. Its not a specially attractive town. Beaches here were disappointing, the harbour left a lot to be desired, the streets could be litter strewn in places.

A lot of reviewers love this place. The staff are friendly, but after all it is there job to be so! All i can say is if you are looking for an atmsophere where you make 'friends' with everyone and don't mind stopping around a crowded, noisy pool and pretty much stopping put unless you hire a car or brave the taxi/bus service - then go for it!

We wont be going back.

The buses didnt stop for anything untill the receptionist phoned the company to tell the bus driver we would be there .then they did stop ,but the bus stop is on a very busy road not suitable for people with young children. You really should hire a car.

My/Our Holiday Review:

Firstly, Rethymno - lovely little town (pop. 20,000) to wander around, with lots of nice bars and restaurants.

What it is good for:

1. Bit of culture - Venetian fortress, couple of museums, nice buildings.

2. Eating. Especially To Pigadi, Stella's Kitchen (for lunch) and Mesostrati. All in the rough guide to Crete but the tourist office can tell you where they are too.

3. Chilling out with a drink and watching the world go by - try somewhere near the Rimondi fountani like Cul de Sac or Galeri, or near the little harbour - there's a whole host of places near the Hotel Ideon.

4. Food! It's cheap, and many places give you free dessert (cake or fruit usually) and free Raki. Yammas! (Er, not actually sure if Raki is a good or a bad thing!!!)

What's not so good:

1. Clubbing - if you like clubbing (which I don't) go to Malia!

2. The beach in the town - bit dirty. Go further out east.

3. Not beinf able to put loo roll in the toilet - it goes in a bin! I'd never been to a Greek island before so this was a bit of a surprise.

OK, so what about Camari Garden itself?

Good points:

1. It's family run, and the staff are fantastic! Get to know them, and you'll have a right laugh! They are the most helpful staff I've ever met. When we were there, there another a group of 7 who had been there 8 years on the trot(!) and when they arrived it is like looking at a family reunion!

2. I expected the food to be so-so, but it is superb! There are some Greek dishes, but as everyone who stays there is English, there is a slightly western feel to the food, but it's not bangers and mash so don't worry!

3. The rooms are very clean, although there's only 1 hob to cook on. But we went self catering so we could eat out all the time, so that was fine!

Bad points:

1. The brouchure said it was a 1 bed apartment sleeping 2 people. That to me means a double bed. There wasn't one, so we had to endure twins which don't quite push together so you can't even pretend it's a double.

2. If you are looking for somewhere to chill out, as we were, this place is great. But if I went again, I'd hire a car to get around as - IMPORTANT, THIS - it's about a 7 to 10 minute taxi ride from Rethymno itself, BUT so are almost all the package hotels. The only Airtours place in the centre was the Ideon and I think that was 5 stars.

Taxi to town is e7 or you can get the hourly bus (e1.25 each) which takes about 15 mins.

3. Don't believe the brochure when it says you're 600m from a beach. You're 600m from a tiny rocky cove, which while the 'beach' is clean, it's pebbly, and water wasn't clean.

So, the important questions:

If I had my time again, would I still go to these apartments? YES (probably).

Would I go back another year? NO, BUT only because I never go anywhere twice - there's too much world to see!

Camari Gardens is a family run accomdation which is run to a very high standard. The accomdation and pools, bar areas, shop and food areas are all kept very clean the food servered is to a high standard and at very reasonable prices. Your apartment or studio is cleaned six days a week and your bedding and towels are changed twice a week, its a quite and relaxing place with two pools both with child sections and there is plenty of sun beds to go around.

It is very easy to get a taxi or local bus into Rethymnon or chania or even further afield, the greek nights that take place at Camari Gardens every Sunday Evening throughout high season are a execellent evening out and the only cost is the drinks are abit more for that night only. You can book this accomdation through Airtours or direct with Angela the owner by contacting them on there wed site WWW Camarigarden com

Having now visited Camari Gardens several times and always had excellent hoildays there i now think it is time to promote the accomdation by leaving this feed back and giving it 10 out of 10 every time

one more thing my son was two years old when we first went and he is now fourteen and still enjoys every minute

Rooms were extremely clean & lovely sea view from the balcony!

There are 2 good size swimming pools here, very clean, both with pool bars serving nice cold beers!...much to my fiancee's delight..started selling beer from 10am onwards!!!

Good size supermarket on site too.

Location wasnt too good, had to catch a taxi to and from Rethymon which cost approx 7 euro's each way...Worth it though!...Stunning port and absolutely lovely bars...esp the strong cocktails!

Cant wait to go back..only regret i have is that we only went for a week!...Will definitely be going back to the Camari gdns for 2 weeks next time.I Recommend this place for everyone. Its fab!

Our family party was made up of a mix of ages,so we wondered whether there would be enough to occupy everyone. HOWEVER...we've all said that we would definately visit the Camari Gardens again.

We were welcomed on arrival by the Mum of the family who own the apartments and the friendliness and helpfulness carried on throughout our stay.

The apartments were comfortable and kept spotlessly clean. The self catering facilities were fairly basic, but more than adequate for our needs.

There are 2 pools with loads of sunbeds and space to chill out.

The restaurant on site had a great menu with a mixture of greek and international food at Fantastic Prices.Try the local wines- the Rose was delicious! The bar stayed open until you wanted it to close and sold the usual stuff plus a good selection of cocktails- perfect for sipping on the rooftop terrace whilst watching the sunset with panoramic views over the sea.

There isn't a great deal directly around the apartments- the village is about 10 minutes walk away with a gorgeous little bakery, a shop and a couple of tavernas. There's also a taverna down by the small beach.

For good shopping and nightlife cosmopolitan Rethymon is about 5 minutes drive away by taxi or 10 minutes on the bus.It has a pretty harbour area and narrow winding streets with traditional souvenir shops and boutiques. Also the resort of Georgiopolis is about 15 minutes away by bus. The beach there is lovely golden sand and there is a kids fun park aswell as a great choice of reataurants and tavernas.

All in all despite the fact that we wouldn't necessarily have picked this holiday from a brochure, we can't wait to return. the resort area was great, but it was the staff and owners of the apartments that really made our holiday something special.

My/Our Holiday Review:

Camarie Gardens is a family run Aparthotel. The transfer time was about 1 hour by taxi, however those that were transferred by coach didn't have such a quick journey, it took 3.1/4 hours, which is something Airtours would need to look at.

We were made very wellcome on our arrival and our apartments were spotless. A welcome pack was supplied which took care of our immediate needs such as water and tea. The Aparthotel had an adjoining supermarket which stocked everything. If they didn't have a particular item they would order it in, very accommodating.

We were situated on the first floor, with a beautiful view of the pool, rugged hillsides, and we could also see the sea.

The food in the bar/restaurant was excellent.

On the Sunday night they held a Greek night. Everyone joined in from the toddlers to teenagers to older folk. In fact it was so popular that some of the nearby villagers came along and took part also. It was an excellent night and everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves.

The Camari was a very sociable place, without being in your face or too noisy, everyone was very friendly and we had some good nights just having a good meal and a bit of fun and chat.

As far as beaches were concerned, there was a stoney beach about 5 minutes walk away, however we hired a car for a couple of days and some of the closest beaches approximately 5 minutes drive away were beautiful. The waves were quite magnificent if you like roughish sea, but was impressed by the fact that a life-guard was on duty at all times.

We would recommend taking a car out to see the sights, Crete is a beautiful Island

The family at Camari Gardens could not do enough for everone and put a lot of hard work into making our stay very relaxing and enjoyable. We would definitely consider going back again and you can't get a better testimonial than that.

My/Our Holiday Review:

This was our fifth visit to the Castello Bianco, as we have found it an excellent place to stay, clean and friendly. It is an easy walk to the beach and the main street where you can eat somewhere different every night (would recommend the Vergina and the Sky Park particularly). You have everything you need in the studio and you can get snacks at the bar. Babis is a great barman and has made us very wlecome over the years. The only problem is that Manos don't seem to be offering Castello Bianco next year and I haven't managed to find it anywhere else either.
