My/Our Holiday Review:

What can I say? The Adrakos Apartments were just simply STUNNING with the best view I think we've ever seen, across the bay of Olous.

The bed was so luxurious and comfortable, with a mosquito net. The kitchen was spacious, clean and fully equipped. The bathroom was to die for! Incredible 'hydro massage' shower which relaxed our aching bodies after the flight!! There was a lovely balcony/patio area and the most gorgeous swimming pool! I've never seen such a clean and well maintained pool, and we certainly made use of that every morning too! There were two resorts near at hand, Aghios Nikolaos and Elounda, both with ample excellent restaurants and lovely beaches. Both places are also within easy reach of the historical sites. We went to Knossos for a day, which was an absolutely magical experience. We hired a car for the day, and drove back via the stunning Lassithi Plateau. This will most definitely take your breath away - certainly not to be missed!!!

We booked these apartments through an EXCELLENT holiday company, Simply Crete Holidays, which we will most definitely use again next time we visit Crete. They went out of their way to make sure that our stay in Crete was stress free. We had a little welcome pack when we arrived, complete with English tea bags, cornflakes, wine and Greek honey! Marvellous! All the properties on their website are of the highest quality, and we were certainly not disappointed with our choice. Couldn't have been better! I highly recommend this company. They really give you that personal touch that you don't get with some of the larger package companies I've used over the years. I will challenge you to get better service elsewhere! THANK YOU Simply Crete Holidays for making our stay so special and memorable!

We'll definitely be back!!!!

My/Our Holiday Review:

Have been to Aghios loads of times before and had stayed at the Afrogialis years ago. Was a little concerned by the reviews I read on this site, but I must say that our studio for 2 was excellent. My Sisters room for her and two children was a bit lacking in storage and the balcony door needed fixing, but on the whole we were more than happy with the accommodation. It is one of the best we have been to in terms of cleanliness and the pool was lovely. As for the 'grumpy old man' if you actually get to know him he and his wife are lovely. He doesn't have a great grasp of the English language and can sometimes sound gruff, but he isn't. On the morning we came to leave Crete, his wife gave the children cookies and chocolate for the journey and he gave the adults a bottle of red and white wine. So all in all I would say as long as you don't want to use the studio to cook complicated meals and to stay in a lot then they are an excellent base - oh and they have a keetle instead of the traditional greek briki which takes forever to boil!

My Sister loves AGhios which is why we went this year, but to be honest, we prefer quieter resorts and at times I found the traffic in Aghios a little overwhelming, but its still a pretty town and the lake area is quieter to sit and people watch.

Having the children with us, we did the two water parks. I would say that teenagers and daredevil parents would prefer Water City as the rides are bigger and faster, but we preferred Aqua SPlash ( I think its called) as the rides were slightly more gentle and because the organisation and layout was much better - not so many hills to climb, not so many queues and you get a wristband to charge everything to so you don't have to keep going back to your locker for cash - which you had to at Water City. We went back to the Aqua park a second time because we loved it so much especially the Crazy River, but I must say that the Kamikaze and the double ring spin and drop chute were that favourite rides overall and they were at Water City!

We didn't do any organised trips, preferring to hire a car and do everything ourselves and it worked out very cheap. We went to Istron, Irepetra, Kritsa and lots of other places. We also hired a jeep one day to do the higher mountains and the Lassitthi plateau which the children loved.

We used the excellent bus service to go to the beach at Elounda because it is far better than the beaches around Aghios and they have water sports - try the Crazy Squab, the children loved it!

Aghios will always be special as its the first place we ever went, but in my opinion it is starting to fade a little. A lot of the hotels are doing all inclusive and many of the restaurants and supermarkets are closing down, which is a real shame. Its still a lovely place though and well worth a visit.

the accomodation was very poor, but not all the rooms were, some were like penthouses, however the room i had was very basic,a towel stuck up in the bathroom wall to hide something but i dont know what, fridge was very rusty and noisy,my first impressions was it looked like a dungeon but as the weeks went by i got used to it,

it was right about the man who charged 3 euros for old books that customers had left behind, cos i left some and went in to see them in the shop, not much in the shop .my daughter went in to get some sunoil and he offered her a half full bottle that someone had left, tight or what, the barman was very freindly michaelas and manos, also the maid was lovely, the bar always shut early about 12 30,and one night we were sat in the dark as the owner had gone to bed, lucky we had some tealights,

on the whole the resort was lovely but a good walk into town,i wouldnt recommend the afrogialis to stay,by the way we didnt get a welcome meeting,

My/Our Holiday Review:

Afrogialis studios was very basic but clean. Cooking facilities, what cooking facilities! one hot plate, and no work surface to prepare food, if there was something to cook on! Pool was clear but need cleaning, could see stains where mold hadn't been cleaned off properly.

Reception, Again what reception! Old Cretan man sitting in chair counting his euros. Because everything at Afro-dizzy-scratch, seemed to be 5 euros or more per person and when it was time to leave cost 20 euros from 1200 till 1800 to keep the room on. And then there was no where to put cases while waiting for coach, told by old man leave out side in the open, which was a worry as hour coach didn't come till 0100 am.

Beach was only 2 mins away but man made and very stony which twisted and cut you're feet as you walked on it, and was not very well maintained. It's not all bad the sea was beautifully blue and water was very clear.

Aghios Nikolaos town was 30 minutes walk and not as busy as was lead to believe by Olympic holidays. only two English type bar which were ok but go a bit repetitive after a while, first bar Aquarius great music and the chap who welcomed you in named 'Will' was funny beyond words , but the girl who brought your drinks over seemed to have to put up with overly friendly men who saw it as okay to paw them. Second bar Sorrentos was very entertaining with great staff , but all drinks are over priced in all bars. Eating out was really nice and very cheap, in fact it was cheaper to eat out then buy in which was lucky because what I wrote earlier.

Overall, very slow but would imagine great for 50 plus who only what a get away holiday in the sun and eat out and play cards.

My/Our Holiday Review:

Hotel was a bit like Fawlty Towers, very basic and not particularly nice. It was clean enough though but not anything to get excited about. Apartment balcony had a fab view. When it's a cheap holiday, you can't expect the Ritz.

As I have been to Ag Nik before, it goes to show the resort is absolutely fabtastic. I love everyone and everythig there.

Places to eat are generally ok but I would recomment Knossos, The Avra and La Strada which is gorgeous and the service is brilliant, staff are really friendly.

Favourite bars to go to are Aquarius and Sorrento's. One visit to Sorrento's and I can guarantee that you will end up there every night of your holidays. For the entertainment factor, the staff are brilliant. Love them all. Michelle is a cracker, Jack is a rocket, Yannis is just Yannis, really great guy and Mark the DJ definitely has something there, mad as a hatter doubled but that's why we love them all so much. Sue the manager is great, really lovely and Ella is fab, Georges is a wee sweetheart and every single one of them makes you feel really welcomed. Brilliant night out. If you are into partying all through the night and into the morning, there are other bars and clubs open.

All in all, Ag Nik is the best place to go to in Crete, the locals are lovely and the Tourist attractions are great also. I would advise anyone to go there but to choose different apartments.

My/Our Holiday Review:

In terms of the accomodation I can only say not recommended

We arrived to find that our room was no bigger than a shoe box, the shower leaked, we had water dripping through the ceiling from the room above. As family were staying elsewhere in Ag Nik at the same time we stayed with them for 3 nights of our holiday. We were going to complain but the queue to get to the rep was so long we could'n't be bothered waiting, everyone in the reps meeting had something to complain about with regards these apartments.

We never ate there as we met another couple while at the pool and they told us not to bother.

The saving grace is that AG Nik is an absolutely beautiful resort. We ate most nights at the Candia which is accross from our apartments and the food was very nice and very well priced. The only thing is don't expect fast service as they are on crete time and do things very slowly. I also advise that you stick to the beer as they do an offer of 2 for 1 on cocktails for 5 euros but they don't put much alcohol in them.

We found that Ag Nik was very cosmopolitan and had mostly greeks, french and italians nationalities in the centre. We went to sorentos as we had read the reviews before we went and it wasn't that busy being the beginning of the season and would be more catered to the younger market.

The restaurant overseeing AG Nik bay is a must as the service and food is impeccable but it is a bit pricey. (Can't remember the name but it has a big yellow sign and it is a bit of a walk upto it, you will know when you see it)

I advise hiring a car as although AG Nik is beautiful you need to look around. Don't try to go to far west, only as far as Knosses temple near haraklion. The best beach is at Via which is the far eastern tip of Crete, its a bit of a drive, very mountainous with excellent views but well worth the visit.

Overall we had an excellent holiday as Crete has so much to offer. Would not recommend these apartments go to the ARITI apartments as family were staying there. The apartments are very big and very well equipped, if you are going at the height of the season then you need to either take a fan or hire one when you get there as they do not have air conditioning.

The waiters at the ARITI are Nikos and Manos. The greek night on the thursday and the BBQ on the Monday are a must as they are excellent evenings.

The apartments were dirty, dark and in very poor condition. very litle in the line of kitchen equipment, door hanging off the cooker, towels were threadbare and not changed often enough. Bathroom was dirty, mould and grime all over the bath and shower curtain, graffiti on the windows (yes windows) no space to sit on the loo. Owner was miserable at best and while we were there tried to charge a guest for a used book (after they had left another- see previous review)

pool and bar are close to main road so traffic noise is constant problem

one good point, they have a nice labrador called Max

What can we say.Another enjoyable holiday on our fave Greek island. We have never been in April before, and it was very quiet and relaxing. The weather was lovely and although it wasnt as bustling as we usually prefare it was very nice.

A lot of the bars and resturants were not yet,or only just opening for the season, buy we were delighted to find a bar called the FLUFFY DUCK open. Its run by an English couple and is not your average "brit pub".Every night was different and they made us feel so welcome,we felt like we had lived there for years.

A great resturant is overlooking the lake(wich is beautiful at night ,all lit up) is MIGOMIS.Not the cheepest place, granted ,but food, service and ambiance are fantastic.

We will definatly return to agios again before the year is out,but will probly go back later on in the season when it is a little more lively.

My/Our Holiday Review:

Alantha Apartments are spacious, spotlessly clean and the staff are very friendly. The rooftop pool is amazing, the view can't be beaten and the pool is very clean and quiet. However, in the peak months it may be a little crowded as it is only small and not much space for sunbeds but in Sept it was very quiet and we pretty much had the pool to ourselves. If it did become crowded, there is a rooftop terrace also which is one level higher and overlooks the pool. Bear in mind if you are taking children, they would have to be supervised at all times as it is unsuitable for them to go up there alone.

Ag Nik is a beautiful place, quite small but it has everything you need (besides big nightclubs.) We had a few nights out in our week there but it is mainly small bars and restaurants so not very suitable for young partygoers. However, just want to say Hi to Sue from Sorrento's, fabulous night in this bar, very entertaining and good music. Also hi to everyone at the Aquarius bar and also to Will and his dad at the restaurant, thanks for everything! I had a great time in Ag Nik, so relaxing and plenty of bars and restaurants to go to. We also went on the boat trip to Spinalonga (the old leper colony) which was great. 17 euros for the day and you can get food and drink on the boat, I recommend Karen's tour as she is very informative with a good sense of humour!

Overall, I had a brilliant time in Ag Nik. Apartments were lovely, beach was clean and the restaurants were very tasty and good value for money! I would recommend it to anyone who needs a nice chilling relaxing holiday with good food and friendly people.

My/Our Holiday Review:

Agios probably the best resort on Crete - hired a car and saw most of the rest.

Apartment.

For:- Clean; linen and towels changed regularly.

Apartment adequate for two (would be very crowded for 4 )

Excellent views from roof pool.

Against:- Poor lighting - apartment seemed dismal. Hard beds, minute tv ( minor quibbles, but this is supposed to be a 4 star establishment)

Air conditioning 8 Euros per day extra (£35+ per week on an apartment that is not cheap to start with)

No view at all from apartment,(room103)and not much more from 90% of remainder.

A/C extractor fans positioned on balcony so if a/c on, warm air blows noisily on to balcony.

A/C only available when room is occupied -cannot leave on when out to have cool room to return to.

Radio in bedroom did not work (told in reception that it had not worked from beginning of season - only 6 Months to fix it then)

Booked apartment for start of school term in U.K. in hope of no children.Apartments are surrounded by Greek residential apartments - the Greeks are noisy, their children noisier.

Pool bar/cafe not open once in fortnight we were there.

Hot water only available from 9 A.M.for a short time and then from 6 P.M.

On our last day we were asked to pay a bill I had settled 9 days previously by a snooty woman on reception.

Defenitely not 4 star treatment!

Tips:- KNOSSOS cafe/bar/restaurant - good food, good service.

Drives:- Agios to Elounda to Plaka continue on mountain road to Neapoli - spectacular views.

From Neapoli take road signposted to Plateau - another excellent drive.

My/Our Holiday Review:

Just arrived back from 2 weeks at this wonderful little guest house. It is run by a guy called Manos who is a wonderful character. Always willing to help.

We stayed on a bed and breakfast basis. It only consisted of bread and butter/jam, some kind of cake, tea, coffee and fresh orange juice. By no means a fry up but enough to keep you going till lunch.

The hotel is reached by a few flights of stairs that are decorated with murials. Loads of people stopped to take photos of them. The 10 rooms are then spread over 3 floors. Our room was small but big enough to fit everything in. Air conditioning I would say is a must. It was in June! It costs 6 euros a day though but I think worth every cent.

The location of the hotel is superb, with views over the harbour and within a 5 minute walk to the lake and town centre. There are 4 small beaches within a 10 minute walk. We preffered Ammos beach which was sandy and had plenty of facilities aswell as being a 1 minute walk to shops. Be warned it was very hot when we were there. Late 30's celcius every day. Not a cloud in site!!

Beneath the hotel there is a little supermarket that stocks everything you will need. Also there is a scooter/car hire place.

There are numerour places to eat. They all sell similar food. A combination of greek, italian, fish and other meat dishes. The ones around the lake have lovely views, but our favourites did not have the views but quality food. La Strada is a lovely restaurant in a side street. They will provide a free taxi from your accomodation to the restaurant. Another superb one was Pelagos? This is a superb fish restaurant. Little more expensive but full every night, so may be best to book.

Along the harbour there are plenty of different pavement cafes. Perfect for sitting, relaxing, and people watching. Nightlife is fairly low key. Based in reality for couples and families. Want nightlife? Then head for Malia, not Ag Nik. More pub orientated bars are Sorrentos, Alexandros roof garden, Sportz bar and Aquarius. Aquarius is where we started and finished our evenings most nights. Will from Wales, the guy who tries to get you in is great. Not too pushy like some. The staff all try to keep you entertianed to the early hours.

Spinalonga Isalnd is worth a visit. This is a former Leper colony amongst other things. There are numerous other trips available within travelling distance of the resort.

Excellent holiday, and def a place I would/ will visit again. Don't be put off by this hotels low star rating and low price. A real gem of a find.

My/Our Holiday Review:

We chose the Angeliki after reading reviews on this site and seeing the picture in the brochure. It is very well decorated and beautifully clean, however we were a bit disappointed with our room. The room was at the back which was overlooked by other apartments and hotels which seemed very close.

There was no view, the sun never reached the balcony and because of the proximity of the other buildings the room was quite dark and we needed to have the light on all the time. We would have put up with all this if a very noisy family hadn't moved into the next room and into other rooms in the building. There was so much running up and down the stairs and conducting family crises on the landing outside our room in the middle of the night that eventually we decided we couldn't stand it any longer and asked our Libra rep to help us move.

We had to pay extra but we moved to the Lato hotel it was wonderful-fantastic views and a sunny balcony.Manos the owner of the Angeliki didn't seem able to enforce quiet during the night, and we did hear from other guests that the noise continued after we left. I think the moral of this is remember this is your hard earned holiday and don't let the bad behaviour of other guests spoil it for you.

Crete is beautiful and the sea is such an incredible blue. Aghios Nikolaos is a very attractive town. There is a new bus station on the outskirts of town and buses run to Iraklion, Elounda, Ierapetra and Sitia. It is well worth visiting all these places. The bus station always seems a bit chaotic but the buses do leave on time and are very reliable. The tourist information centre near the lake can provide a map and a bus timetable and we found the tourist information centres in other towns also had free maps. The Cretans are very friendly and do seem to be concerned that tourists are enjoying themselves. As we were there at the end of the season it was fairly cool in the evening-we really should have had coats with us! The days were quite warm 25-33degrees depending on how cloudy it was. We did have a couple of days of quite heavy rain so take a waterproof.

The trip to Spinalonga is very interesting but Lana the English quide on the 'Venus' won't be there next year.

Other trips organised by Libra seemed quite expensive so we didn't go on any. (The return fare to Iraklion on the local bus is less than 12euros.)This was our third visit to Crete and we will definitely go back.

Ag. Nikolaos is great for families with young children, teenagers and anyone out for a bit of good craic. Most restaurabts are good as the locals are friendly and there are a lot of people from all over the world working so you're bound to find someone near your home country somewhere. The bars are great so there's no need to visit clubs and they do stay open to all hours so there's no need to rush out in the evening. Best bars are Aquarius and Sorrentos. Sorrentos has a variety of staff working there, from Crete to Bulgaria to Britain. All the staff are crazy but a lot of fun, very friendly and the atmosphere is nothing usual, definitely in a league of their own. If you want complete comedy and entertainment, this lot are seriously up for a laugh which makes for a more interesting holiday. Fantastic group of people here. Unfortunately a holiday isn't long enough. Ag Nikolaos is so great that you just won't want to go home until the season ends. People visiting the country from all over the world are lovely and it's great fun getting to meet new people.

Locals are pretty laid back and easy going but just respect them for being kind enough to let you visit the country in the first place, in other words, don't take a mile when you're offered an inch.

Have a great holiday like I did and don't forget to visit Sorrentos.

This is a small hotel/apartment block right in the heart of Ag.Nik. The rooms are lovely and clean and the accommodation is excellent value for money. The 2 Cretan gentleman who look after the hotel are lovely and friendly and put themselves out to help you in whatever way they can.

The hotel overlooks the sea and accessed by a number of steps therefore is isn't really suitable for anyone with walking difficulties, but for the majority of people it is excellent. We have been to thes apartments 4 times and enjoyed each time, but the apartments were given rave reviews mainly because of Nicos and Manos who looked after everyone whilst having a meal or a drink at the bar. Since they left things have gone downhill, the sign says the bar is open until 1.30 but the lights are put out at 12 o'clock but you can buy drinks to take back to your room. The rooms in the 2 three story blocks do not have plastic armchairs on the balconies, only metal upright chairs with no arms, not exactly relaxing.

My/Our Holiday Review:

We had never been to Crete or indeed Greece before so were unsure what to expect.

Well I would be the first to admit that my views are probably somewhat clouded by the fact that the weather was atrocious for part of thw week and very unsettled over all. We booked late, looking for some late sunshine, with Olympic and got a good deal and the flights themselves from Glasgow were fine. The food on the flights however was easily the worst we have ever had on a plane.

The apartments are pretty basic but they were spacious and clean with a nice pool area. If you were however intending to cook food then you would struggle since the cooker/over just won't suffice. It is however good for drying off wet trainers and socks on a medium over for 2 hours. We just ate out. Getting any hot water was problematic for part of the week and when the rain was at its heaviest the windows leaked and large pools of water ran down into the apartment. Other apartments were much worse however (completely flooded) and some people simply had to be moved to other apartments in the Ariti.

The biggest problem is the location. Yes it is only about 20-30 minutes walk into Agios but its down quite a busy and poorly light main road for the first part and this who area is not much more than a dumping ground for old cars, mopeds, fridges, mattresses, garden furniture etc. This aspect lets the Ariti down badly. There are also dogs that are likley to come running at you. Didn't hear of anyone being bitten but not pleasant all the same and most famillies simply refused to walk into or out of town. Even the second part of the walk through a suburb of Agios is not that pleasant with dogs and cats roaming everywhere. Its not a walk that you would want your teenagers making. Dogs barking throughout the night are also a problem and a lot of people had difficulty getting a sleep.

Agios itself is a nice town when you get into it with nice restaurents and a good mix of shops. In mid October it was winding down and everything seemed a bit tired and out of season. The beaches were also pretty disappointing but in fairness I've yet to see a really nice beach in the rain.

If the weather is bad there is not much to do. The archealogical museum is good for about 1 hour and after that its a bit of a struggle. Again however if the weather had been better this would not have been a problem. We did manage to get to Knossos but found it a little disappointing. Don't however pay the price from the holiday reps. They are a complete rip off for everything.

The Cretan people in general and those at the Ariti were very friendly and the taverna at the Ariti was fine. One kind local even stopped and gave us a lift back to our apartment in the rain.

Would we go back? Well sitting back at home with my new weatherproof jacket, umbrella and trainers I'd have to say no. The surrounding area near the Ariti really spoils it and it is not a pleasant walk, down the street to the main road or after that into town. Its a bit dirty and to be honest we have preferred other places. We didn't meet anyone at the apartments or indeed on the flight who would go back but having said that this makes it sound a lot worse than it really was.

My/Our Holiday Review:

We stayed at the Ariti Apartments in September last year, we got a great deal with Olympic Holidays for 2 weeks. We were thrilled with the apartments when we arrived. They were basic as is often the case with Greek apartments but were exceptionally clean and very spacious. The balcony was huge!

We ate in the on-site restaurant on the first night and were very impressed with the food and the waiters, Manos and Nikos who were friendly and helpful. It's about a half hour walk into the centre on one straight road, not too much to manage at all. We tended to always walk down and get a taxi back which cost 5 Euro every time. The resort itself is more couply than anything else, you got the odd group of girls or boys, so it was lively but not over the top. There isn't really anywhere that stays open later than 3-4ish and most places start to empty of people after 2 or so but that was fine with us.

The weather was great, still v hot but with a lovely breeze that helped to cool you down. I would highly recommend this holiday.

My/Our Holiday Review:

We knew when we booked that the hotel was little way out of the centre so there was no suprise, we were greeted by the hotel owner who was very friendly he took us to our room which was fairly basic but nice and it was clean.

the pool area was lovely with a garden area and steps down to a rocky cove and so has a grgeous view of the sea from the pool. all the other guests were very friendly and would all sit round the pool and chat, the hotel owner seemed to do everything from cleaning the rooms to cooking the food and serving at the bar on a couple of occasions when we had said we were going into town him or his wife would give us a lift in there car to save us getting a taxi. it is around a 30min walk to the centre of ag nik but seems longer as there is nothing but one or two bars and a couple shops on the way.

on a night time it gets very dark and at some points there is no path to walk on and the motorists drive quite fast along the roads, we didnt visit the beach however it looked lovely and there wasnt too many people on it, the centre its self was beautiful with loads of resteraunts and various bars our favorites were sorentos bar and alexander roftop garden which more of a disco (and i think probably the only one)also the sports bar which had all the sports channels on, a taxi back to the hotel would cost between 5 and 6 euros but a bus stop was only a couple hundred yards from the hotel, they run quite frequently and are clean, we got a bus to elounda which cost 1 euro and only took about 15min from there we took a trip to spinalonga island which is an old lepur colony dont be fooled by the price advertised on the boats we thought 7 euros was all we would have to pay but you will be charged for enterance into the ruins and then have to pay more again for the tour guide so it worked out approx 13 euros for the two of us and to be honest it wasnt that interesting.

all in all we did have a lovely holiday and would deffinatly go back to ag nik and would stay in the artemis beach again..P.S if your buying tobacco the go to sams cigarette warehouse on the front road in town you wont find cheaper.

My/Our Holiday Opinion:

Ag Nik town is great, La Strada best resturant & they pay for the taxi to collect you.

The Hotel is the worst that we ever stayed in, although the owner a German guy & his wife are very friendly, but as the Thomson Holidays rep described the place as "Faulty Towers".

When we got there he showed us to our so called room...the smallest most basic accomm that I would not even put my enemy in....he then offered us an upgrade??...this cost us an extra 40 Euro's a night!!!

I get the impression from other guests that we have spoken with that he offers the worst room when you get there & then he offers a better room at a price - despite the fact that we really should have had a good room in the first place!!

We asked him if the room had a hair Dryer for my wife & his response was that " I am bald and I do not need one"

Very angry at Thomson Holidays s...we arrived on the Thursday & complained, even asked her for a complaints form on the Sunday & guess what she kept forgetting to bring us one - how convenient is that!

We have complained to Thomson Holidays , but I don't expect that they will even bother to reply!...a pity really as we have trusted their judgement on the last few trips - but hey guess who we won't be booking with again..cheers Thomson Holidays "you're rubbish"

My/Our Holiday Review:

Just returned from a week in this hotel. Very clean, fantastic views, great pool, and the owners were lovely. The only drawback about the hotel was that it is a tad far out of Ag Nik-walking took about an hour (not that I tried it), taxi was 6 euros. The transfer from Heraklion took about 1 1/2 hours. The onwers of the hotel have a wee boy, as cute as he was, it wasnt the place to be if you didn't want children running about.

There is a restaurant in Ag Nik-La Strada-excellent food, and they send a taxi for you rom your hotel, and they pay for it. Very reasonable prices as well.

Alexandros roof bar has great views, all cocktails are 5 euros, and they also come round with free shots, including raki....

The Fluffy Duck pub is a MUST-run by Steve and Vicky-became a regular haunt on the holiday, Fantastic atmosphere, and it's where you are most likely to find your holiday rep!

Shopping in Ag Nik is quite good, loads of the customary fake Louis Vuitton etc, as well as soaps, etc, and the usual cheap fags and cheap booze.AVOID the market on a Wednesday, it's set on cardiac hill, and bascially is a Greek version of a jumble sale. The fake Levi's were obviously fakes, as well as the perfumes, and the rest of the clothes.

Will definitely return to Ag Nik!

My/Our Holiday Review:

Just returned for a week in Ag Nik, staying at the Artemis Beach Hotel. Its a quite a trek (45ish) minutes to the main town centre, so unless you are very fit and energetic its a taxi ride (6 euros) to the centre. The accomodation was basic but clean and tidy. The pool was excellent and very clean. Food and drinks are available from the bar area. We went B&B - this was the usual thing, toast, cereal, tea, coffee etc but there was plenty of it. My only gripe is the lack of peace and quiet while you were round the pool and dining areas. If you are into the sound of a wailing child at daft o'clock in the morning, also noon and night then this is the place for you. If you relish the thought of a peaceful lie in after a heavy night then take a few pairs of ear plugs coz ur gonna need em!!!!

On a lighter note, I would definitely recommend this resort to families, couples and singles alike. There is a huge variety of bars and restaurants to cater for everyones tastes. Highly recommended is La Strada. They do both Italian and Greek food as well as a few English meals. If you ring them up they will send a a free taxi to pick you up. We ate there 5 nights out of 6. Prices are very good and the portions are huge!

We visited Alessandros -the roof top garden bar as well for the customary cocktails. These are only 5 euro each and inevitably you get a few free shots while you are there. You can see all over the bottomless lake and surrounding views - well worth tackling the steps for the views. Another must visit is The Fluffy Duck pub. Steve, Viki and Random are behind the bar there. They made everyone feel very welcome. Drinks are very reasonably priced, atmosphere great and music even better.

Overall a great holiday, and definitely worth a return visit, though I'd stay closer to the town centre next time.

My/Our Holiday Review:

I booked my holiday one year before we went. The reviews made the apartments sound nice, if a little out of town. However when we got there the rep tried to leave us in the wrong apartments, as she didn't know where they were! We found them round the corner looking rather empty. It would seem that that week was the start of the main booking in July!! The rep only had 1 room booked not two as we had paid for. The rooms were sorted later by Christine the Olympic Rep.

The room although large had cobwebs in the corners and the linen had ingrained stains on some sheets.Beware the showers, the curtains are at least 2inchs away from the tray resulting in flooded bathrooms every time. We shared the first night with 2 cockroaches and the sound of dogs barking in the distance from 10.00pm -6 a.m. You will need a taxi or a car to leave the apartments. The suggested 30min walk mentioned in previous reviews, did not state that the walk was on the main highway with very few pavements for pedestrians. After the second day we agreed to an upgrade that took most of our cash, Olympic insisted that we could not pay by credit card and left the apartments, never to return!

The resort however was lovely, the kids loved the Sorrento bar. There are lots of lovely restaurants and bars. It is easy to travell on public transport from the main bus station to other areas of the Island. We did Knossos, and Spinalonga. We would return to the resort, but not these apartments. We are also not sure of using Olympic again.

Sofia,co-owner, made us very welcome at the astro appts, that had just opened for the season, obviously the reason the reps werent sure where reception/appts were!

the appts were well equiped, kettle, toaster etc and were cleaned every day(or other day)when we had long lie! They were basic but more than adequate.yes they lie on a hill but that meant with the meltemi wind it was not too hot for sleeping, tho take earplugs for the dogs bark and the quarry up the road starts early!Artiri appts next door provide shop, bar, good food etc, nothing at astro, which made for a nice quite poolside, and the pool was very clean, almost had it to ourselves for 1st week.Yes there is a lidl up the road, good for supplies!

Hired car and done all the usual sites recommended by others, tho son not impressed by Knossos! he preferred waterpark!best beach was at istron 20mins further on from almyros beach.Beautiful.Food in ag nik was all good, didn't have bad meal,La strada we went to several times, staff nice and they send a taxi for you and food was lovely too.20 min walk to town and as said 5euros back in taxi.gregorios down main road to town provided good food, huge amounts and very topical discussion from son yiannis!!Be warned.

All in all good hols but met some good company which made it memorable.

My/Our Holiday Review:

Hi all,

We arrived in Aghios Nikolaos not knowing what to expect as it was our first time here but we were not disappointed.

The resort was excellent with great weather. The apartments were very good with maid service every two days. With clean towels and sheets replaced every two days by Maria and Sofia (very nice ladies). Apartments had the usual fridge, oven hob, kettle and toaster. Swimming pool good with kids pool and with attendant every day.

Local supermarket was good for the usual breakfast stuff, milk bread etc.. We had a Lidl's supmarket just up the main road so we made the trek up there quite a few times.

Journey into town was a 20 minute half hour walk..not for the elderly or for those who could not get about easily, but there was a phone by the local supermarket were you could call for a taxi. There were loads of tavernas in the town but our favourite was near our apartments, we cant think of the name but it was near our apartments up the road towards town and then right at the lights near the renault garage. Great food at reasonable prices and the people were very nice too!

We hired a car from the local agent in the town. We explored most of the island.

We can well recommend going to see the Lasithi Plateau. They showed us pictures whilst we were there of the winter time and it snows there possibly nearly 10 foot deep in places. It is hard to imagine when in the summer the temperature is in the nineties. We also found a beach were no one was on it we had to do abit of trekking mind you.

The town has quite a few historic places you can visit. I also remembered the car parks there. Rather unusual you may think but we were rather surprised to find that they actually park your car for you.

You just pull up get out collect your ticket from the counter, hand them the keys and away they go.

We had a great time exploring the island in the car and would recommend it.

We also went to one of the water parks there. I can recommend going for a whole day but the prices are not cheap so take lunch with you.

But overall I can recommend going to Ag Nik and we shall probably be returning in the near future.

We have just returned from holiday and I know Manos the waiter does not read these messages because he told us, but I would just like to tell everyone what a really helpful and nice person he is. One of our party had to return early because of a bereavment and he helped by speaking to the airport to get another flight. He also done all the e-mailing that was required to pay for the tickets.

The rep, Bernie also was the best rep I have ever had in all the holidays we have taken she could not have done anymore for us she even gave us her mobile number. So once again a great big THANKYOU to everyone that helped,

and I am sure you will all have a great holiday at the Astro, pool fantastic so clean appartments spotless and very spacious, we had a two bedroomed (huge) the hill and side road a little bit tricky at night when returning home after a few cocktails. NIght life in the town centre great some really good restaurants. Spinnalonga is a must but do go with Nostos Tours the ones with the dolphin on the boats the offices are just around the corner from the taxi rank by the lake. Another good trip was the fishing trip, bbq fish for lunch on the boat. Have fun wish I was going back this week.

My/Our Holiday Review: Hi all,

Just returned from Astro Apartments, Aghios Nikolaos,Crete. Very hot.

Had a wonderful time. Apartments basic and clean with all the usual gadgets.

Fridge, cooker, kettle and toaster. Shower with hot water etc..

Bedding and towels changed at least every three days by Sophia and Maria. Very pleasant ladies.

Swimming pool good with small childrens pool also.

Town not too far away but perhaps not a distance the elderly or slightly disabled could manage. You can call for taxis outside the taverna near the apartments.

Local supermarket good catering for basic needs. Lidl's supermarket up the main road which we found very handy.

We hired a car which was from an agent in the town. This enabled us to explore the island alot more. We can well recommend going to see the Lasithi Plateau which has great views from the cafe on the top and up there it snows in the winter months in Crete. They showed us some pictures of the snow and it was ten foot in places.

We also went to one of the water parks, there are two on the island. Although it does cost a bit when there is a few of you. It is perhaps worth going for a whole day as you have to pay to get in and then also pay for the sunbeds.

There was a great taverna when we went, right at the traffic lights near the Renault garage. I cant remember the name but they seemed to be open all the time.

There prices were reasonable and food was excellent.

If you like nightlife, bars etc.. go to Malia but if you want a bit of nightlife but also a nice taverna go to Aghios.

Overall I can recommend Crete as a holiday destination and would definitely return to Aghios Nikolaos.

We had a great week staying here. Lovely studio apartment with everything we needed, great roof top pool and lovely owner.

Only a short walk down the hill to main shopping area and beach.

The only downside of our stay was that when we arrived we were told that aircon wasn't included and when booking the apartment we were under the impression that it was!!!!

After talking to various other people staying in the apartments it seemed the rate was either 4, 8 or 10 euros depending on who you booked through which seemed abit odd - what difference does it make, it should be one price for all, or at least included!!!! The room didn't have a fan either so the nights were sooo hot!!!

Other then that though, great place to stay!!

My/Our Holiday Review:

We have just returned from 2 weeks at the candia park. It was definately one of the best holidays I have been on, and this accomodation was the reason for it.

It is extremely well maintained and has a charm about it that has been lacking in other hotels. the staff are helpful, we loved the taverna and ate there many times, (we felt happier in a less formal setting with 2 young children), and found the food excellent, much better than some we had in town. we also ate in the main restaurant twice and found the food to be excellent also. we were able to enjoy the dancers from the greek night without taking part in the buffet, which seemed expensive for a family of 4.

we loved our large ground floor terrace with ajoining garden, and found the apartment to be spacious.

The saltwater pool was amazing and the water took your weight so you could just float without doing anything, bliss!!

we went on a boat trip with an underwater viewing area, this was excellent and well worth the 13 euros each, we saw lots of fish and the divers coming to the windows was a brilliant touch.

the kids club was fantastic, the girls running it do a wonderful job, especially litsa.

I would return to this hotel, and i would not usually go back to the same place.

Go, you wil have a fabulous time!!

My/Our Holiday Review:

This was our second visit to Candia Park, and once again we had a great time. Not only did we get fantastic weather in the high 30s everyday, the general holiday was even better the second time around. We arrived to see a lot of improvements on the previous year, most obviously in the renovated reception area which is now in a more central location above the supermarket. There was no real problem getting sunbeds, however if you arrive at the pool side later than 9 it was more of an issue, although there were always available sunbeds on pier and the beach.

The Candia Park staff were all very helpful and friendly, especially Mannolis in the Taverna- a nice on site resturant- who was very friendly and was a great help when i misplaced some of my belongings, Marc in the Internet Bar who we had a lot of fun with and Zissis in the Coffee Shop. The Coffee Shop, situated next to the Reception is a really nice spot overlooking the whole village and the sea, but it remains relatively unknown. The Greek man, Zissis, runs it single-handedly and serves drinks and some food all evening, and it is an welcome change from the Eros Bar and on-site entertainment, especially if you prefer it a little quieter.

The only problem we really encountered was with Taxis. As a party of 5 we were generally unable to just have one, but the Taxis, although booked by reception, were often late, or in our experience, didn't turn up at all, so it is best to either book in advance or turn up before 7.30.

There is a nice mix of people in the village, both in terms of nationality and age, and we found there to be a lot going on with the kids club etc. The teenagers seemed to find their feet eventually and entertain themselves and at night there are 2 onsite bars, Eros- who have a happy hour of buy one get one free on cocktails 7-8, and Marc's bar which is open from 5-1 and which showed some of the Premiership football games this year.

All in all, we found Candia Park to once again be the location of a fantastic holiday which we would recommend to anyone who is looking for a nice, relaxing break.

My/Our Holiday Opinion:

Just returned from a fortnight at Candia Park and can totally recommend it.

First, the negatives in case you get bored! We had a normal room and the layout is quite odd if you're using it for 4; the main bedroom is large, but the living area has the beds right at the front door so you could effectively sit up in bed and open the front door. Didn't rate the food as that great in the taverna and it wasn't cheap. The supermarket has been mentioned a few times in the context of it having the essentials; there were several days when we couldn't get bread. The prices are very high for some things (eg., bottle of wine in Candia supermarket 11.40 - take a 20 minute walk to the nearest supermarket and get exactly the same bottle for 5.40, then found the same bottle in Ag Nik for 3.40!). The location of the complex was probably the worst thing for us. Someone has mentioned that the walk into Ag Nik is a brisk 45min one; with two small children it's just not adviseable. There is no pavement for quite a bit of the route and it's mainly along a very busy road. We had to get taxi's everywhere which was ok but we do like to get out and about and walk which we just couldn't do. Think that's it - the positives now!

What a lovely place Candia is. In my first few days I didn't think it worthy of 4*, however, it really is. The grounds are kept immaculate at all times, the maid service is fantastic and all staff were extremely pleasant. If it weren't for the location, we would definitely return (might still do). It would have been the most perfect holiday if the complex had been shifted nearer Ag Nik.

We ate in the taverna a couple of times for lunch and twice in the restaurant for dinner; lunch was ok, nothing to rave about and the dinners were not bad at all.

Where we did eat: Ag Nik (7 euro each way in taxi): Migomis - overpriced and average food but good service. Cafe du Lac - my meal was lovely, husband didn't rate his at all. Faros - brilliant food and excellent value for money and really lovely staff. Barko - overpriced and average food. La Strada - ok value and nice food and you get your taxi paid for from Candia. Elounda (12euro each way in taxi) Ferryman - really nice food and brilliant service. We ate somewhere called Vronis (I think that's what it was called - something definitely starting with a V and it's on it's own right on the seafront) service was absolutely horrendous and food wasn't brilliant - for four adults and four young children, our bill came to 298 euros.... I would strongly advise to avoid this one if you can. We also went to Plaka (18 euros each way) - we ate at Giorgios and our first meal was amazing and service brilliant, second meal, service wasn't as good but food was. Beautiful setting; eating your meal and you can see spinalonga.

The kids club is absolutely fantastic; what a brilliant job those girls do. We've never been able to use kids clubs before due to the age of our two so we weren't sure what we were required to do - I thought you would have to book every night before, but it's so relaxed the kids can come and go as they please. They do loads of activities with them and our two thoroughly enjoyed the time they spent there. there is also a really good play area right outside the kids club.

You do get free beach towels. I had read that you got them in previous reports but took ours just in case - not needed. You're given laminated cards the day you arrive and swap them for clean towels every day between 9am and 6pm. We only had a couple of days when we had to search for a sunbed - as usual there are the culprits who put their towels down and turn up late, but what can you do?

On the whole I would totally recommend Candia - just be prepared to spend a fair bit of cash on taxis!

My/Our Holiday Review:

We have just returned from a fabulous holiday at Candia Park Village. The staff are very friendly and helpful. The accommodation is spacious and clean with very large balconies (if on first floor). The food is very good and in the Taverna very large portions!!!

Kids club is also very good but aimed more at younger children, but it did not stop my 8 year old and his 12 year old friend going every day for arts & crafts and the video.

The complex is very clean the staff are out early every morning to clear any rubbish and hose everything down before most people get up. The appartments are serviced every day and clean towels provided on request.

On arrival a voucher is given to you for your beach towels and they can be changed as often as you want so there is no need to pack any beach towels.

The staff are excellent especially Goerge in the pool bar and Zissi the Kafenion and top marks to Mark in the internet cafe.

We went into Ag. Nik. most nights for a meal and can recommend Dionysos by the lake for good food and very friendly service. Also Neon, overlooking the lake, which also serves very good food. taxis fron the complex are very easy to obtain, just ask at reception and a taxi is there within minutes. Approx. price into Ag. Nik. is 7 euros well worth the money.

I would also recommend the Greek evening at the complex, the buffet was very good the dancers were excellent.

We enjoyed our holiday so much that we have booked up to go back next year two days after our return, and that is the first time that I have ever returned to the same place, I cannot wait until May next year until I am back at Candia Park Village!!!!!

My/Our Holiday Opinion:

We stayed for 2 weeks on half-board basis and paid extra for a sea-view apartment. Both were worth paying the extra for.

We arrived at about 5 o'clock in the morning but this meant we were awake at 6:30 to see the sun rise, which was lovely and revealed what a nice place we had picked for our holiday.

The apartment was very clean, with maids coming every day. The bathroom had a bath as well as a shower. There was no oven in the kitchen, which could be a problem if you are self-catering, but this wasn't a problem for us. One small but very useful thing - they supplied washing-up liquid, scouring-pad and tea-towels.

The "village" is very clean and well maintained. The supermarket is small and more expensive but it was fine for us as we usually only bought water and juice from there.

The beach isn't very big but as it is only for Candia Park residents it was fine. There are plenty of water sports to try at reasonable prices. My children went on the Donuts and that was 15 Euros each, plus I got to go in the speed boat for free (great for taking photos, so take your camera).

There are two pools, one sea-water the other fresh. Both are very clean, but be careful there are some very large steps between the two pools and everywhere can get a bit slippy.

The food in the restaraunt was excellent. Some nights you selected from the menu with a choice from the buffet for the second course and other nights it was entirely buffet. There are also special Cretian and Mediterranean buffet evenings.

The breakfast is a buffet, with plenty of different thing to choose from. The waiting staff are very friendly and helpful.

We had no problems with mosquitos or wasps, but I did get stung twice by jelly-fish on the second day, but then they dissapeared.

We only went into Aghios Nikolaos a couple of times and it was quite busy, lots of shops and places to eat and also very hot. Taxi costs 7 Euros. I wouldn't even contemplate walking there during the day as it is too hot, and I would imagine at night its a bit dangerous in places because of the cars.

We have been on many holidays and most of them you have trouble remembering the name of the resort let alone the accommodation you stayed in, but Candia Park is one place we will always remember and seriously consider going back too.

My/Our Holiday Review:

August 2006..Just back from Candia Park which is by far the best holiday we have had for years. Caters for every age group young and old and nicely positioned enjoying stunning views. Prior to booking we read the reviews on Holidays Uncovered and there is alot of repetition so I will try and stick to the other points which we picked up on.

First of all we at the time of booking considered upgrading to a suite. We were put off by the huge price but once we arrived and saw the accomodation for ourselves negotiated an upgrade immediately. We got the room for 50 Euros a night and I would have paid double this! The views are stunning and worth every penny. We used the private jetty to snorkel and sunbathe and the pool and beach too.

Some of the reviews mention sunbeds by the pool and that there are always plenty. This is obviously dependent on when you go as we had major problems getting sunbeds. Despite signs poolside warning you not to place towels on beds and leave them unattended you struggled for one if you werent up putting your towels down before 8 oclock. We refused to do this, and no it wasnt the Germans, everyone was doing it. After a couple of days we gave up and got up early otherwise we wouldnt have got beds. One annoying thing was the amount of beds that lay with towels for the whole day unoccupied. We found out that alot of people would got to the beach and leave towels poolside just in case they wanted to use the pool, which was ridiculous. No-one mentioned the shortcut from Candia to Ag Nik. We walked to Ag Nik a couple of times, our pace determined by the slowest member of our family who is 6. Took us 45 mins but we enjoyed it thoroughly. Road isnt as bad as people have made out all you have to do is zig zag from pavement to pavement. Its safe enough!

On a previous review someone recommended a couple of places to eat. On this recommendation we did so and were very disappointed. Firstly Du Lac on the lake in Ag Nik. Lovely setting but expensive and food very poor indeed. Very disappointing indeed. My advice is to avoid. We ate nearyby in the Cafe Must which was good value. The other place was La Strada who pay for your taxi apparently. We waited an hour and a half for our food to arrive! By this time kids were very tired and we had all lost our appetites. Staff were too busy fawning over the German and Italian clients that happened to be in the same night. For a lovely meal and within a 10 min walk of Candia Park is a taverna called Candia on the road to Ag Nik. Try this place, it is fab!

Again there has been criticism of lack of entertainment at night. There was always something on at night, whether it be Magic Tony or a local Greek band. To be honest we were all too tired to stay up too late having exhausted ourselves "fishing" with nets at the jetty, playing tennis, football and sunbathing.

Kids club is superb. We arent keen on dumping our kids in such places but they have Arts and Crafts, facepainting and a wide range of activities to keep them occupied. Not the usual sticking a video on and leaving them be! They had a ball.

To sum up, you wont find anywhere better to stay in Greece for the money. If you can afford to upgrade, do it. Waking up to that view with the noise of the waves is one I wont ever forget. Staff are fantastic, accomodation immaculate. We will def be back!!

My/Our Holiday Review:

This is by far THE BEST hotel/appartment village on the island of Crete. As near to perfection as it gets.

We stayed in one of the self catering appartments, the two things that let it down at all were the facts of no oven in the kitchen area and no double bed, it was two singles pushed together. Please don't let this put you off, I promise you if you book this place you will not be disappointed! the staff were at all times more than helpfull, and indeed they did their upmost to see that every request/need was catered to and was brought to you ASAP. Me and my family (we went with my parents, brothers, sister and all wifes/boyfriends & offspring. A total of 15 in the party) will be going back. Disabled guests are VERY well looked after with ramps located all over the village. The beach beach being the only exception, but there is a way of taking wheel chairs down there should you want to.

We loved the place, the staff were awesome (without exception), the water sports were very well done, food and drinks were fit for a king. What else can I say?? Candia Park Rules!! It's a must. Don't bother with the coach tours, get out there with a hire car (Sixt have a rep in reception who will cater for ALL you hire needs). Getting yourself lost on the little back roads on the mountains will bring you massive rewards!!

This was our second visit to the Candia Park at it was as good as our visit in 2003. It has all the things we need on a holiday: good apartment, good food, great staff, great pools and beach and water sports.

The Taverna now is open on an evening and its a great place to eat as well as the main resturant. The Greek Coffee shop is also a great place to eat on an evening to have a light meze meal. It has a fantastic view over the bay.

Prices are higher than the in town but the quality is first place.

Good places to eat in town are Neon, La Strada, Embassy and Avli.

My/Our Holiday Review:

Had an absolutely fantastic holiday here and would definitely return. We came to Crete to get married and have no regrets at all. We arranged to have our wedding reception at Candia park and they did everything that they could to ensure that it was perfect - it was! We had a private party on the balcony of the cafe Neon that overlooked the sea and mountains. They cooked the food as required and were at hand to attend to our requests. The village was perfect and we had our photos taken in the gardens - the flowers in full bloom.

The restuarants at the park provided all types of food to cater for all requirements. The gardens and pool areas were immacculate and the childrens facilities excellant. The childrens club ran from 1000 hrs to 1900hrs and the staff were superb.

All the staff were very friendly and approachable. An absolute must for a relaxing holiday in perfect surroundings.

Aghios Nikalaos was also beautiful with a varied selection of restuarants. It wasn't too lively but relaxing and great for families. Only thing being that we must have spent a small fortune on taxi fares - 7 euros each way

All I have left to say is that I fully recommend a family summer holiday here.

My/Our Holiday Review:

We came here in August 2005. I booked the hotel as other reviews had been so complimentary. We had a great time and I would recommend Candia park to anyone - though in August it isn't really for couples - it was full of kids of all ages.

The pools and beach were lovely and the water sports were great fun. The village was beautifully maintained and very clean. Our cleaners were very nice and helpful. It was windy, but the wind kept us cool, so I'm not complaining. It was hot in the day and pleasantly warm at night. Ag Nik by the lake or by the sea was a pretty place to eat at night - there are plenty of places to eat by both. Elounda was also a lovely place to eat by the sea - again a number of restaurants to choose from.

My/Our Holiday Review:

We have just come back from a really lovely holiday.

All the other glowing comments are spot on but there are a few other points I would like to mention. Most importantly, I really did my homework before booking and this holiday is available through quite a few tour operators and by far the cheapest was First Choice.

We did have a thoroughly lovely time, the apartments are very big and cleaned daily and its great to have beach towels which you can change as often as you like. The pool is very clean and the whole village is in a very good state of repair. It is def worth going out into Ag Nik as the food at the 2 restaurants on site is good but very expensive. You can get excellent food (and wine!) at a fraction of the cost in either Ag Nik or Elounda which are only a 7-10 euro taxi ride away. We wish we had eaten out more. There is however a full kids menu at the village and a very good kids club. Most of the kids are german, greek or french but they do cater for all nationalities and the children all played together really well.

The only downside is the evening entertainment. They did have a cracking greek evening on our last night with dancers and a band which was excellent but apart from that there was only a very bad magician using live animals (not my cup of tea) and a two man band (keyboard player complete with dubious looking cigarette hanging out of the corner of his mouth !) playing greek numbers and a few hits by The Shadows etc..Also we booked out boat trip to Spinalonga Island directly at the harbour at Ag Nik on "the Venus" which cost a fraction of the price First Choice wanted for the same trip saving approx £50.

We wish we had stayed longer as there is a lot to see on this lovely island and would thoroughly recommend it. Don't hesitate to book !

My/Our Holiday Review:

This was our second trip to Candia Park, and one that we were very much looking forward to having had a fantastic holiday there previously.

However, after our first night in our room, we woke up covered in nasty bites. Given that we had the windows closed and mosquitos machines on all night, we knew that it was something else which was causing the bites. Our daughter had over 40 bites on her body.

We checked the beds and discovered to our horror, that the base was covered in bed bugs (small dark brown bugs, size of a ladybird).

People don't realise that, with all the worldwide travel, bed bugs are at epidemic levels in some countries - it's nothing to do with lack of cleanliness. Having spoken to pest control back in the UK, they told us that they are dealing with more and more bed bug infestations every week. They also told us that bed bugs are vey resillient, and can live up to one year without feeding, so they can lie dormant in your clothes, or suitcase (sounds like a horror story!)

Anyway, we reported it to the hotel manager, who thought we were mad and kept saying that it couldn't possibly be bed bugs. Pest control arrived very quickly and confirmed that it was a horrendous infestation of bed bugs.

We had to move out of our room immediately - all clothes had to be boiled or dry cleaned - all cases, shoes, bags had to be sprayed (goodness knows what chemical they used, and no face masks or protective clothing at all!!)

Completely traumatised, we moved into a neighbouring apartment whilst all the spraying and pest control was taking place. I have to say that the hotel management dealt with the situation totally professionally, and were mortified by the situation.

The reason I am flagging this on this site, is not to slate Candia Park, because it is one of the most beautiful places I have ever stayed. What I wanted to do was to make people aware of this potential problem and to check underneath mattresses, and bed bases (even underneath the hessian mesh on the base - that's where they go undiscovered).

My worry is, that the pest control measures were far from exemplary. Maids were going in and out the apartment carrying infected linen outside. They would then go on to clean other rooms, with the potential to infect them with bed bugs (the bugs and eggs attach themselves to anything they can).

When we were there, we saw other families with terrible bites and we suspect that the infestations were not limited to the one apartment - it's highly unlikely that the infestation would be contained.

When we returned to the UK, we had to put all our luggage into our garage - nothing could be taken into the house. Everything we brought back had to be boil washed, or dry cleaned. We had to get pest control in to spray our cases, bags, handbags, shoes, etc (twice in two weeks). Once you have an infestation of bed bugs, it is very difficult to get rid of them as they are so resillient. They can even burrow into light switches and sockets and hide and breed in there.

Now, when we travel anywhere, whether overseas, or UK, we always inspect the beds fully - mattresses, bases, underneath bases, headboards, etc before we unpack - just as a precautionary measure. We also never bring our luggage into the house - we unpack in the garage! Might sound a bit extreme, but when you've been through an experience like this, you'll never want to go through it again - believe me.

So, in summary, I'm not warning people not to go to Candia Park, because it's a wonderful place and the staff dealt with everything so well - including compensation. However, please just be a bit more aware of this potential hazard - not just in Crete, but wherever you travel. It might save you a lot of heartache in the long run.

My/Our Holiday Review:

We have just returned from a very enjoyable fortnight at Candia Park Village, Agios Nikolaos.

This hotel/village is simply fantastic. It is a very child-friendly location although as a couple without children ourselves would stress that we did not feel out of place. We had a studio (sleeps 2-4) which included a very large kitchen area and twin beds together, a bathroom with shower, satellite tv (mainly news for English) and very large terrace area. The rooms are exceptionally clean. On arrival, we asked about obtaining mineral water to be told that they have some ready in the fridge which was an excellent touch (as we arrived at 2am). Cleaners attend daily are are happy to change towels on request. We asked for a 1st floor apartment but had a ground floor although made little difference.

The supermarket is spot-on for most items, bread, cheese, cold meat, crisps and drinks along with most newspapers if required. The pool area is where we spent most days and is very relaxing. Although 3 pools we stayed around large deeper end (9ft) as away from childrens pool. Pool bar open all day as is a snack bar. The private beach is very secluded with opportunity to jet-ski, banana ride, kayak etc. At night we chose to mix up trips to Aghios (7 euro taxi and a gruelling walk!) where we could recommend Migomis (very nice/suit couples/great views), Le Strada (suit all, good menu/value and will pay for your taxi ride there!) and Du Lac or stay at Candia Park. Buffets for BBQ night and Mediterranean (fish) nights were excellent. Good bars in Aghios are Puerto and Candia Bar where you can sit outide alongside harbour.

Top features: very clean, spacious apartments, very very friendly staff and stunning views. Negatives if any: taxis needed although very reliable and cheap, cleaners may want to be in your room at 9am.

Overall very much enjoyed and would definitely go back sometime in the future.

My/Our Holiday Review:

We booked a studio room here as a last minute deal, and it was incredible value for money. We actually got the accomodation half price but would've gladly paid the full price... it was worth every penny

THE VILLAGE. The complex itself is about a 40 minute walk from Agios Nik (5 mins in a taxi for a few euro). As the complex is built on a hill you get fantastic views. As you drop down into the complex you are greeted by a haven of green and flowers that were beautiful. Each apartment 'block' is based on two downstairs and two upstairs. All apartments are painted lovely bright colours which make the place look very cheerful. The complex is terraced down the hill. In the centre of the complex is the reception, two restaurants (highly recommend the food! (Gorge fresh fish and local dishes) and a bar. There is a further two bars (one by the pool and one on the upper terrace near the shop). There is an on-sight shop which is reasonably priced, an internet cafe/bar a laundrette, and three swimming pools - two large (one cholorine one salt water) and a childrens pool. The views from the bars and restaurants were amazing.

There is a small beach down a few steps from the pool where you can hire pedalos, or have a banana boat ride, or doughnut ride. You can also hire other watersport equipment. The beach itself is quite small, but has ample sun-beds and the most beautiful coloured fish in the blue sea - DEFINITELY need to invest in some snorkelling gear as it'll be the best money you spend all holiday!

THE ROOMS. We had a studio which was very spacious. Twin beds, with TV, gas cooker, table and chairs, sofa bed and a huge patio/balcony outside with table and chairs. Water and fruit was provided for you complimentary when you arrive, and you are given a free bottle of local olive oil with herbs when you leave! The cleaners came in every day and serviced the room. Staff were very helpful and quick to respond when there was a problem with the electrics in our room. The bathroom was very posh (for greek standards) with a bath and shower, and shower curtain (novelty usually in greece!). Kitchen area was well stocked with pans, plates, coffee machine, toaster etc.

THE RESORT. Ag Nik was very pretty down by the 'bottomless lake'. Beware of the many restauranteurs attempting to get you into their bar/restaurant. They are very friendly, but after the fourth one in a row you eventually give in and have a drink/meal! We ate at one restaurant (has a boat with fresh fish outside) and the food was lovely. Lots of souvenir shops if ur interested, as well as bars, restaurants etc. You can also take a day trip to Spinalonga (last remaining leper colony which closed in 1958). Lots of ruins, pretty views etc. Make sure you only take the trip from Ag Nik as this is the only company that provide a guided tour. Other companies just taxi you to and from the island. The tour helps to explain some of the ruins and described life on the island. Very interesting. Worth visiting.

CAR HIRE. Car hire is very cheap and well worth investing in. We hired a car from ECONOMY which only had a few miles on the clock, air con.... Which in cost 80 euros for four days hire plus 12 euro tyre insurance. Petrol is reasonable. We drove to VAI beach which is on the eastern tip of the island. 2 and half hour drive, but worth it. VAI is greek for palm tree. It is surrounded by a palm tree forest which is well worth a look. However does get quite busy later on in the day.

Beware of Heraklion airport. We had to queue outside for about an hour to get into airport. It's tiny but if you have a night flight - VERY busy and congested which is hot and irritating at the end of your holiday. To avoid too much irritation we recommend pre-booking your seats on flight. It only costs you 10 pounds and is worth every penny!

In conclusion, this was a fabulous holiday. It was worth every penny and we'd definitely go back again and pay full price. This was the nicest greek accomodation I have ever stayed in and we would recommend it to everyone.

My/Our Holiday Review:

First, a bit of background as to why we chose Candia Park Village: We are two brothers with families, one (this author) living in Norway and the other in the U.K. Instead of visiting each other at our respective homes we decided to meet up on Crete. (Let someone else do the catering and washing up....)

We have five children altogether, aged from 18 months to 17 years (!) Our Mum & Stepfather were also coming along. 11 persons in all. So you get the picture – our requirements were fairly demanding. We wanted somewhere where it would be fun for the kids, safe, with a high standard (Mum is fussy…..…) and with enough to see & do for us all. So after some intense internet research we chose Candia Park Village.

As we were booking and travelling from separate countries, we had to juggle dates and flight times so that we would be there at the same time (not easy, I can tell you!). We contacted Candia Park (CP) in advance to arrange some extra accommodation for my two eldest for a couple of nights, until the U.K. gang arrived, and to ensure our total of three apartments would be placed close together. This was our first experience of the helpful and professional staff. Nothing was too much trouble for them. Mr. Christos Mittos, the Manager, answered our emails promptly and all our requests for cots, extra beds, placement and general info were met. We were put into three apartments adjoining, two on the ground floor and one above.

Lots of other posters have described the complex itself, we’ve seen the official pictures and in our mind’s eye we thought we knew what to expect. Wrong! It was even better! The gardens and public areas were superbly laid out, immaculately kept and the flowers and greenery kept watered and tended by an army of gardeners and janitors. Paths were hosed and the beach was raked and tidied every day. The cleaning ladies buzzed around in the mornings tidying up the bars and around the restaurant, as well as cleaning the apartments and changing what must be megatons of bed linen and bath towels. All with a cheery “kalimera!” to everyone! By the time the guests started to arrive for breakfast the maintenance staff seemed to fade away, leaving the place gleaming and all ready for a new day.

I strolled around the entire complex area several times and became more and more impressed each time. The area past the pools round the corner towards the seafront apartments is lovely, and the terraces down to the little swimming jetty are ideal for couples or those without small children. None of the apartments are really that far away from the shop or the restaurants, it is all so cleverly laid out and designed that once you know your way around you can use shortcuts to get to where you want.

The apartments themselves were fine (see reviews passim for details), the two that we had on the ground floor were in shade for most of the day, which suited us. If we wanted to sit in the sun outside at any time we just went upstairs to our Mum’s balcony. The standard I would rate as good, to be honest not five star but we don’t go on holiday to examine the furniture and fittings. The bathtub/shower was great for us, as our little girl is a handful and washing off sand and sun cream in the shower is like trying to shampoo a greased eel. In short, the apartment had everything we wanted and needed for our 14 days.

My brother’s apartment seemed to become the ant capital of Greece for a couple of days. The janitor man arrived with his anti-ant spray and this seemed to keep them away. Tip: No jam fights if you want an ant-free holiday. Minor gripe: We did have mosquitoes attack us at night, we tried various so-called anti-this-that-and-the-other but to no real avail – we got nibbled on anyway. On our third last night we mentioned it to the head waiter at one of the restaurants (the Taverna) and he produced almost at once, as if by magic, a bottle of the local stuff that actually works. If only we had mentioned it before…….

We dined in the restaurant and at the Taverna quite a few times. The restaurant buffet was brilliant, with something for everyone (remember we were aged from 18 months to 68 years). Some of us tried the į la carte too which was also very, very good. Try a mixed grill if you dare, don’t eat anything else before on that day though.

The Taverna was more informal and great for when we just fancied something lighter. Although they do have a special of the day and a full menu of local dishes should you want to go for the full spread. Prices for drinks and meals at the complex were of course somewhat higher than in local restaurants, but to be honest we didn’t look at the price, we got what we wanted, an excellent meal in lovely surroundings and a short stroll back to our accommodation. Sounds a bit flash but that’s not it, it’s the truth.

We also ate out in Elounda a couple of times, once at Restaurant Thea, on the left just before you get to the town itself, and once at the Ferryman in town. The latter got the “Best Meal” award from our group. Fantastic. The former was also extremely good, lovely food and friendly service. The one thing that you really notice in all restaurants is that children are made very welcome. At the Ferryman the head waiter rounded up one of the staff to rock our daughter to sleep! I thought it was a bit embarrassing but my wife said “Lerrim get on with it!...)

The pool area at CP is fantastic. The three pools were all well maintained and cleaned daily, although (as another poster has pointed out somewhere) there were some, very few, tiles that were uneven or broken. The steps down from the top pools to the bottom large salt pool were quite steep. But you can’t just let youngsters run around unsupervised in any case in such an area anyway. The three youngest in our group always had a grown up with them. There were always sunbeds available, even though we needed 8 of them for all of us - however we decided to keep away from the grassy areas due to a couple of us (allegedly) getting bitten by grass-living thingies. So we found that the corner of the lower pool, closest to the Taverna was the ideal spot, sun all day and plenty of room. And herein lies a dark confession: To ensure we got our favourite and practical spot every day we resorted to the much-reviled but often-practised technique of “staking”, i.e. going down early and putting out our towels. I offer no defence except that “needs must”, to avoid us being spread all over the place. Sorry!

To really appreciate the area and to get around easily you need to hire a car. We rented two in advance from City Cars (www citycar gr) and they were delivered/picked up at the hotel as promised by Helpful George, a true gentleman. The Sixt Car Rental agent at the hotel itself , Ms. Phaedra Hoffs, (lovely lady) also has some good deals at weekends, although during the week the prices were a lot higher. Tip: Print your reservation confirmation email if you prebook before travelling, and take it with you. We actually got two cars delivered by a company that my brother had merely sent an enquiry to. The company we had actually finally booked with took up our case, accused them of jumping the gun, and as we had all our correspondence with us it was easily resolved. The “pirate” agent had to take his cars back!. We used our transport to take us to Water City in Anopoli (brilliant, will always be remembered as the place my son learned to swim) into Ag Nik, to Elounda and to Ieropetra, Krita and up Lassithi Plain as well as lots of “nipping out” as we say round our way.

I could go on about CP all day, I was so impressed. It was by far and away the best holiday I have ever had, and I’ve been to quite a few places in Greece. To point out any weaknesses or faults would be nitpicking really, but as people want to read honest reviews and get complete information, here are a few things that we could point out:

The CP shop is only for the necessities; don’t think of getting your weekly shopping there if you are doing a lot of self catering. Prices are well high and the choice is limited. For example they don’t, for obvious commercial reasons, have cold water or beer. If you don’t drive, it would actually pay to get a taxi there and back to one of the big stores. We went to Lidl (yes, yer actual Lidl) just outside of Agios Nikolaos, a fabulous newly built discount store with a wide range of food & non-food goods, very cheap beer and wine. If we wanted even more variety or wanted something from a fresh food counter we went to the Spar in Ag Nik itself.

Re: night buzzers: ask at the reception for the mozzie oil, (they will send someone out to the chemists for you if they don’t have any and deliver it to your room) or go and see the main man at the Taverna. Effective stuff.

Don’t expect fabulous Moulin Rouge/Disneyland entertainment, it’s fairly low key and ends early enough as to not disturb guests with children. However DO watch the magician on Saturdays, Magic Tony, my 4 year old still talks about him every day – great entertainment for kids. Take a tin opener, the one provided is no good. And a corkscrew just in case. The air conditioning is noisy but you get used to it. Try and imagine it’s a waterfall nearby. Lots of people have mentioned taking a cut down store card to keep the a/c on all day. We just took our key off the fob and left it in……..keeping it on all day is a waste, or so I found, the apartments cool down so quickly once you turn it on full blast. Last tip: Smile at everyone, there’s lots of grinning going on and it gives the place a good vibe.

Everyone in our group enjoyed their stay immensely. Myself, my wife and two youngest will be going back in a couple of summers (next year is all house-building – boo!). It is ideal for families seeking a quality, safe and child friendly holiday. I won’t even bother looking anywhere else.

My only regret regarding Candia Park is that I didn’t book that third week as I had originally planned. I won’t make that mistake again.

My/Our Holiday Review:

My Boyfriend & I (both 29) wanted a last minute holiday with some guaranteed sunshine, but also with some things to do and places of interest to visit. We're a bit past the clubbing stage and prefer relaxed evening meals out. We decided on Crete as we'd been to Corfu and liked the Greek lifestyle and people. We found a deal with First Choice through the Thomson Holidays website. Upon looking at Candia Park Village, we thought it looked very good and as it was rated 4*, we had high hopes. I read all of the reviews on this site before making the booking (as I always do when booking through the Internet and having no brochure) as I feel you tend to get an honest review and mostly, they have been incredibly accurate for us.

We decided to go ahead and book and flew from Manchester as the dates suited us most. Upon arrival at Heraklion Airport, the usual chaos ensued. Not so much on the baggage re-claim as you would expect, but outside trying to find our transfer coach. The First Choice Reps weren't much use and when asked which coach we should board, we were merely told "Kyile Minogue"!!! Of course it would've have helped if the coaches had the names displayed, but no, they all had numbers in their windscreens instead. So, after trailing through what seemed like hundreds of coaches in the early hours of the morning, which is not the safest of things to do, when they're all trying to depart at the same time, we eventually found our coach. We waited about 1.5 hours for the coach to depart from the airport and finally began our 2.5 hour transfer (this was really the only downside of the whole holiday).

We arrived at Candia Park at about 6.15am and were welcomed by a very friendly Creten gentleman Receptionist. Before I carry on, I just want to add that this complex really is the nicest place I have ever stayed (especially in the Greek Islands). I cannot praise it highly enough. We checked in, were given maps of the complex, told how to work the in-room air-con, meal times etc etc. He offered Concierge Service to bring our bags, but as we were only a stone's throw from Reception, we decided to make our own way there.

We found our appartment which was on the first floor. Seems all the apts are in blocks of 4 - 2 apts on the ground floor, 2 on the 1st floor. We had a very nice kitchen and dining area with everything you need for self catering (table & chairs, fridge - which had a free welcome pack of fruit & bottled water inside, kettle, coffee-maker, toaster, plates, utensils..cork screw!!!). Off the kitchen area was a lovely balcony with table & chairs (not plastic!!) colourful plants & climbers. Very pretty. Also it was part covered so you could escape the sun when desired.

The bedroom adjoined the kitchen area. Twin beds pushed together, bedside tables, wardrobes, dressing table, TV, telephone, hair-dryer. Off the bedroom was the bathroom which was one of the cleanest and most spacious I have had on a package holiday. The standard you would expect in a 4* UK hotel. It had a bath instead of just a shower tray. Ample towels AND beach towels so don't bother wasting room in your case taking your own. There were even complimentary toiletries. The bedroom had aircon which was brilliant and very much needed. Simply slot a cut down Advantage type card in (you WILL need to cut it down, so take some nail scissors) and leave it on all day. It's controllable from the bedroom. But close your bedroom door and try and leave the room "sealed" to avoid Mozzies! Some nights I found it too cold but there are blankets provided in the apt if your partner likes it Arctic like mine does!

Anyway, the apt. was cleaned everyday, fresh towels and sheets changed. The Maids were lovely and always said good-morning and chatted as best they could. We generally sat on the balcony and let them get on with it. The complex is very large, but you soon find your way around. The best way to the pool and bars is through reception and out the back.

There are 3 pools and plenty of sunbeds all around. The nicest spot we found was by the pool bar (of course!), next to the balcony with a beautiful view of the sea. The breeze kept us cool. The bar is rather expensive, but as we were s/c, we took our own bottled water down there every day to keep hydrated. There is a shop on site, up past the clock tower, but it's quite expensive again. You can get the usual snacks, milk, tea, coffee etc and bread, which is fresh daily. We just bought breakfast things and bread & cheese for lunch if we were staying by the pool all day. Unlike some places, none of the staff bother you or tell you not to consume your own food & drink by the pool which was a refreshing change.

On our first evening, we took a taxi into Ag.Nik. to find a place to eat. It cost 7 euros each way, but the journey is really not walkable as the road is busy and dark. Ag.Nik is very busy but nice all the same, although we did find we were hassled to eat in all the restaurants alongside the Lake. In the end, we ate at the one who didn't pester us to eat in his! We understand this is all part of the culture, but it's a bit off-putting on your first night and as a result, we didn't bother to go back to that area again. We couldn't face the barrage of "come in here, it's the best, I promise you this, that, the other etc etc". We found Ag.Nik has a big cafe-culture and it was lovely to sit in the many street cafes surrounding the harbour and just watch the locals parading around.

On another night we went up to Elounda. It's much quieter and less touristy. We only went once and I wish we'd visited again, so I would recommend anyone to go there as a break from the bustle of Ag. Nik. On the whole, every menu in every place was much the same and I can't honestly say that any meal was especially outstanding. Very nice & value for money, but nothing out of the ordinary. However...... we hired a jeep for a few days, and went to Irepetra one day (south coast). We had lunch at a very quiet cafe along the harbour front and it was superb. There was more than enough for 2 of us and the quality was excellent. I'm not a food obsessive but it made a refreshing change to receive such excellent quality of food and service, instead of just "average & normal".

Anyway, aside from that we went out & about in the jeep to Knossos (bit disappointing but ok), Gournia (v. interesting Minoan site) and Heraklion (dont bother apart from to see the Venetian Fort, hectic, hot & noisy). Crete can be very windy so I would advise that unless you like the "dragged through a hedge backwards" look, get a car with air-con, or a jeep with a roof.

On our final day, we spent the day at a beach a few km's down the road. I heard check-out was 12 noon but I checked with Reception the day before & as we weren't due to be collected for transfer until gone mid-night, we were allowed to keep our room till 5.30pm. They also advised there was a shower room if we needed it. On the day of departure, the Maids presented us with a small bottle of local Olive Oil infused with herbs. A nice touch! All in all, they couldn't do enough for you through-out the complex!

Well, I think that's it. Information overload I know but I hope I've covered most points people want to know. I would not hesitate to go back to Crete and especially Candia Village. I haven't been able to say that about any resort I have stayed in over the last 10 years.

Happy holidays!
