My/Our Holiday Review:

After reading mixed reviews about this hotel decided to give it a go as it was close to Gibraltar which we wanted to visit. On arrival at the hotel the grounds and building look very impressive but from there it goes downhill. On check in was given the key to our rooms but no directions to them,no information on meal times or hotel facilities at all.

Food in the restaurant was average but be warned, lots of Spanish stay at this hotel as it has an all inclusive offer on in Spain and they just took trays of food straight off the buffet to their tables.

The poolside ended up littered in glasses and plates and the staff just seemed to be on a go slow. The interior of the hotel is showing signs of its age with thread bare carpets and cracked tiles.

We only stayed 2 nights and that was enough. It has a 4 star rating but I think it should be a 2 star.We spent the days in Gib. which was well worth a visit.Spent the rest of our hols in a 3star Sol hotel which in comparison was like a 5 star.

My/Our Holiday Review:

This is a hotel we looked at a while ago whilst we had kids on board and decided we would definitely come here at a later date as a couple. We booked at fairly short notice and included our favourite auntie, who was recovering from an illness. First Choice kindly informed us by letter that the outdoor pool would not be heated as they don't like their guests to be uninformed, but neglected to mention that major renovation works would be taking place between 9 - 6 every Monday to Friday!

As other reviewers have said, the hotel is situated in a major port and is not a resort, but it is an excellent base to explore from. We hired a car from Crown at La Linea (MUCH cheaper from there and a reputable company) and it was under 2 euros to get there on the bus to collect it. Handy hint! walk across the border and pick up cheap cigs from the airport first as you can only get one carton each per visit (around 8 quid for 200). You can do the same when you return the car. When going to Gibraltar, if you take the car, you have a LONG wait and have to pay to park. If you walk through, you also have to pay to park in La Linea, but once over the border, you can get a bus into town, ie to Main Street - get on a blue bus, they are more frequent and passenger friendly. Gibraltar is good for cheap cigs and booze, but no cheaper for perfume or aftershave. If you're a first time visitor, do the tour - if not and you're homesick for Blighty, then hit the shops and pubs - food prices are amazingly cheap!

Back to the hotel! Arrived in driving rain, cold and tired - rooms not ready, but we could have a drink and the restaurant was open. As All Inclusive guest you are branded with a hospital band on your wrist. Welcoming log fire in Reception (ok, so I'd brought sun tan lotion, skimpy tops and shorts - how was |I going to cope if this continued?) Rooms were ready after lunch and they were fine - really fine - obviously this section had been upgraded!

Got talking to the other British guests, many of whom had been before (several times) and they had various remarks about where the hotel was heading - but most of the comments were positive. Most of the hotel staff have been there for years, especially Dennis the Head barman, who does a neat trick with cocktails (Hercule Poirot meets Tom Cruise). This place would be the ideal setting for an Agatha Christie murder mystery weekend! No, we didn't have hoard of kids descending, but there was an Anglo-Spanish wedding, and the British contingent did hog the bar on the Thursday night and the Spanish matrons took over for the Friday reception; the public loos were disgusting by the time they left!

So to sum up: If it is your first trip to the Costas, stick to a main resort. Do not come here out of season if you are looking for day time/evening entertainment - what you see is what you get. If you don't hire a car, then you can use the bus to visit Tarifa (good - quaint town, windy streets, etc) Ronda, or the main bits of the Costa del Sol, or you can use the train to go further afield. Ask at Reception for maps, train and bus timetables as the Reps do not get down to this neck of the woods, but will leave a faxed message to say they have been unable to contact you. Transfers to and from the airport are generally by taxi.

Just returned from a week in the reina cristina, following other reports we were concerned, needless to say they were unfounded. The hotel was spotless, staff great anf the food was excellent, some refurbishment is being done but it doesn't interfere with the guests. Not a holiday resort as you would know from it being a large port, having said that excellent shopping in the town with all the usual shops (mango, zara etc). 40 mins by bus to Gibraltar it costs 1.76 euros a bus is available every 30mins from the bus terminal, also buses to cadiz, ferry to morocco 35mins for 35euros.More older people tend to stay it is not for young children or teenagers it is purely a relaxing break in very nice surroundings.

My/Our Holiday Review:

This is the second time we have stayed at this hotel but I'm afraid we will not stay here again.

Last February 2005 we had a very enjoyable time, although the resort is a working port and definitely not a holiday resort you could still enjoy yourself doing a little shopping and it is also ideal for visiting Gibraltar. Unfortunately we cannot say the same for this year.

The hotel has had £millions spent to upgrade the rooms and it is money well spent, I cannot say a bad word about the rooms. Everything was new, from the beds to the bathroom it was one of the best rooms I have ever stayed in. The food is very good although a little limited in choice.

The hotel is a hundred years old and is very impressive, in fact the week we stayed there we had the King of Spain's son Prince Philip and his wife come for dinner and two days later the Spanish Prime Minister came for a meeting with his ministers. Needless to say security was very tight with police and sniffer dogs all over the grounds.

But I'm afraid that is where the good points end because the hotel has been taken over by a large company and to generate cash they open the hotel for cheap all inclusive weekends to the Spanish and to say it was bedlum is an understatement. There were people urinating in the grounds, vomit all over the entrance, women breast feeding babies and changing dirty nappies in the bar when there was a facility for this in the toilet erea. Food was being thrown all over the public rooms. In all it was a total disaster for the other people that were staying at this hotel.

Because the Reina Cristina is normally an old colonial hotel ideally suited for the more muture person who tend to stay for long periods, it was such a shock that the management had allowed it to be brought down to this level. A group of English guests complained bitterly to the receptionist but he was very apologetic and said the staff didn't want this to happen every weekend either and that the guests should complain to First Choice and also to the hotel owners. One of the guests started a petition and asked us all for sinatures which would then be forwarded to the relevant people.

It was a bank holiday on the Monday in Spain so this group of people causing mayham were staying an extra day this time, I'm just pleased we left early Sunday morning.

I've looked at the First Choice web site and noticed that the Reina Cristina doesn't appear after October this year, maybe they have got the message.

we were upgraded here from hotel cortijo blanco and were astounded by our luck

the hotel may not be to everyones taste but i thought it was beautiful the decor was very nice

the food was delicious

the people there were great and we made a lot of new friends

it was quite quiet there so good if you dont want an overcrowded resort

the entertainment was fairly good and the activities are also good

the entertainment crew were very friendly

the room was large and clean and we had 4 people in 1 room but still had enough space

the pool was ok and choose all inclusive as the drinks and cocktails there were fab

the hotel is very near to gibralter and although the beach was not near enough to walk to there was a daily minibus service to thye beach which was lovely

the one problem i found with the hotel that it is not really based in a resort area it is more a typical spanish city sort of environment so i suggest that if you did not want to stay in the hotel all the time i would rent a car.

all in all a very good holiday

My/Our Holiday Review:

Whilst Algeciras can scarcely be classed as a 'resort' - there are really no beaches within easy walking distance, the town itself is full of character and with a wide range of excellent shops. These can be accessed readily on foot or by taxi.

However Algeciras'main attraction is its ideal location as a touring base. Within the space of two weeks we managed to explore the Costa de la Luz, the Costa del Sol, Gibraltar, Morocco and inland Andalucia - not bad for a fortnight! We would strongly recommend hiring a car as there really is such a variety of locations to be visited and enjoyed.

What can we say about the Hotel Reina Cristina ???? This has to be the best hotel we have ever stayed in.

We have been to more modern, more luxurious and better equipped hotels in many countries, but never one with such a wonderful atmosphere. Nothing is too much trouble for the wonderful staff team - they describe themselves as feeling like a family and this really does come across to the guests. The restaurant presents a wide range of food, hot and cold, which caters for all tastes and nationalities. The selection is imaginative and varied, and all of top quality. The entertainment is the responsibility of Juanma, who has a great personality and is an expert at getting guests to participate in a range of activities, day and night. His efforts really contributed to the success of this holiday.

The rooms themselves were quite accurately described elsewhere as 'shabby chic'. They are spacious and well furnished. The furnishings and decor in some rooms are older than in others, but nevertheless, they are all kept spotlessly clean and are fully functional, and a great improvement on the bland boxes in more modern hotels. The hotel management team are clearly making great efforts to upgrade the decor, and although there were painters and glaziers there during our stay, their presence was so unobtrusive that it posed no problems. We do hope they don't try to modernise too much, as the current style helps guests to feel at home and relaxed.

The hotel has a tremendous reputation in Spain itself, and a considerable number of guests are Spanish. The local community also visit the hotel on Saturday evenings for the dance, led by a Spanish duo who are excellent. This offers guests a great opportunity to see and learn a lot about Spanish culture and language. Staff are always more than happy to advise on the Spanish language and will encourage you to try to speak as much as possible. However there is no difficulty in making yourself understood in English if you need to.

We would highly recommend visits to Gibraltar - apart from the tax free prices, with great savings on gold, diamonds, leather and electrical & photographic goods - St Michael's caves are spectacular.

Approx half an hour's (max) drive away from the hotel is Tarifa - an interesting resort where the Atlantic and Med. meet. This is a great playground for surfers, with wide, clean beaches. Nearer to the hotel on the same road is the much smaller settlement of Plaja de Gatares, which also has a good beach, with prom area.

Our recommendation, if you are planning to visit Morocco, is to go from Algeciras to Tangiers, rather than Algeciras to Ceuta. On our coach trip via Ceuta and Tangiers the weather caused the cancellation of the ferry from Ceuta (which is less able to cope with rough seas than the Tangier ferry) and we were forced to take the boat from Tangiers. As your passports are held at the Ceuta/Morocco border, this caused a long delay whilst these were recovered for our coach party and we finally returned to our hotel at 2.30 a.m. However, the ferry runs from the dockside opposite the hotel and is very convenient for travelling either in a coach party or as foot passengers.

Finally, we would highly recommend a visit to Selwo Park at Estepona. This is a very imaginative wildlife park, with safari jeep rides through the animal enclosures, suspension bridges and an enclosed aviary (a net strung across a valley between two hilltops) which you can walk through with exotic birds flying around you. A truly memorable experience, shared with good friends (thanks Mark and Eve)

We would also like to use this site to say another thank you to all our fellow guests who also helped to make our fortnight so enjoyable. We will certainly be going back to the Reina Cristina again soon.

My/Our Holiday Review:

We were quite worried as we read some very critical reviews of this hotel after we had booked! But we were very satisfied with our holiday and thought it really good value for money.

Yes, it is old and quite tatty in places, but it is such a fabulous place that after the initial shock it really didn't matter. Some rooms are not good because they haven't been refurbished yet, but we ended up in a great one overlooking the pool.

The food is good with plenty to choose from. The restaurant is very clean. The cutlery was spotless. There was only one bar open at the hotel because the hotel wasn't very busy at this time of year. But we never had to wait more than a minute for a drink.

The town of Algeciras is a working town and the docks are very big - but the town centre is superb. The shops are fabulous and include designer names.

It is walkable and not that far, but a taxi, called by reception, will get four of you there for less than four euros.

Buses run from along the front to Marbella, Porto Banus and Gibraltar very cheaply.

The evening entertainment was not brilliant - bingo and quizzes with one live show and one live band. On the Saturday evening the locals came along to dance to the band (a duo) and it was really great watching the dancers. We all joined in and everyone got along very well. I think that more is laid on in the season.

We didn't meet any very old people who were staying there for the winter as had been suggested. All ages were staying and lots of them joined in the daytime entertainment that included shooting, pool and darts.

This is certainly the place for a quiet laid-back holiday. It's not the type of hotel that you would find on the beach in Torromolinos with screaming kids running all over the place all day and night. It had some really lovely guests who all knew each other by sight, if not better, by the end of the week.

Of all the early or late weeks we have had over the years, this one knocked spots off the rest.

My/Our Holiday Review:

After having read the reviews prior to going to Reina Cristina,I was very apprehensive about this hotel. However, upon arrival, (which only took 1hr 45mins from Malaga), we were pleasantly surprised.

Yes, the hotel itself is an old hotel, over 100 years old, and this must be taken into consideration when booking this hotel. However, it is a sight in itself, it is a very colonial hotel, and is full of rustic charm. The grounds in which the hotel are set are wonderful, and are kept tidy and clean.

The room itself was a little dated, and the air conditioning in the hotel is very dated, so dont be surprised if this isn't working. But, if there were any problems, the hotel staff were very quick to rectify the problems.

The food was excellent with a wide choice which catered for all tastes, including vegetarian.

The entertainment on an evening was very good, however, after having spoken to people who have been to the hotel before, the entertainment was not as good as previous years.

We were informed that the hotel is up for sale at the moment, and therefore the budget etc, has been lowered prior to the sale.

The area of Algiceras is a working port, and it does look like beruit when driving through, but, take time out and have a walk into the main shopping town, there are some wonderful spanish shops (none of the owners speak any english, but they will do their best to help).

Overall if you are looking for a totally relaxing, peaceful and just generally chill out holiday then this one is a must. There are no children at the hotel, the pook is beautiful and no fighting for sunbeds which is a first for us. I would highly recommend a break like this if you just need to unwind and totally relax.

My/Our Holiday Review:

Having recently returned from our holiday to Reina Cristina we thought we should tell you what it is REALLY like in the high season. After reading a few comments on the website we were extremely concerned about going to this hotel. So here are the facts.

Distance from Malaga airport to Algeciras is approx 140kms. On the minibus it takes 2 hours but on the way back to Malaga we were provided with a taxi which took a more direct route and the journey only took 1 hour 40mins.

Hotel - 105 years old and it has some fantastic old pictures all around the reception showing what it used to look like and a few of the old residents - Winston Churchill included! It has some lovely original features and is a fascinating place. The beach used to be practically at it's doorstep! There are 4 or 5 lounges, all air-conditioned and extremely clean, and tidy. All very comfortable.

Bars - There are 2 bars, one beside the pool and the main one in the main area of the hotel. The staff were very polite, friendly and helpful at all times.

Rooms - Our room was quite dark but felt quite homely as it was carpeted in the main room. There were 2 huge dark wood wardrobes and a dressing table in the middle. There was a balcony and the air conditioning worked brilliantly thank goodness! The bathroom was very clean and spacious and was tiled throughout. The rooms were cleaned every day and all towels and bedlinen were changed every day - again the maids were very friendly as well.

Pool - this was a good size for the size of the hotel. There were plenty of sunloungers and plenty of room around the pool for people to lie. There were at least 4 showers around the pool and this was also the area which had the table tennis, pool table and some of the organised activities. The pool was clean and there was someone who appeared to test the water quite regularly during our 2 week stay.

Activities - Archery, Rifle-shooting, Cross Bow, Tennis, Table tennis, Shuffle Board, Sjoelbac (small game played with pucks on a table, push them up the board and try to get them to land in the numbered boxes), mini golf, tour of the local market, bingo!, line dancing and loads more evening entertainment too. When you can have all these activities for free how can you complain there's nothing to do? The entertainment team were fantastic - especially Juan who worked extremely hard. At night there were games and other activities but there was absolutley no pressure to join in and none of the games were of the embarassing type!

Meals - Absolutely superb! Plenty of choice, always a white meat, red meat and fish dish to choose from. Vegetarian options available. The waiting staff were very efficient and tidied away dirty plates while you went to get the next course. They also changed the table cloth after every table was cleared. All plates and crockery and everything was very clean and the meals were always hot.

There was a security guard who came on duty at night but he certainly did not interfere with the atmosphere or ask anyone to quieten down and go to bed. There were a variety of age groups and some kids in the hotel. Each weekend it was really nice to see that the locals came to the hotel to enjoy the entertainment and dance the night away. It is also used to host traditional SPanish weddings which is not something you are likely to see much of in one of the busier tourist resorts.

Local Area - as stated in previous reviews this IS NOT a tourist area. It is the 2nd largest port in Europe and is very busy. You can go for a walk down to the port during the day but it is not recommended at night - but why would you want to go out of the hotel at night and have to pay for drinks and entertainment! If you walk up towards the back of the hotel you will find the more traditional Spanish town. Yes the pavements aren't exactly perfect but it is nice to see how the local people live. Some of the villas are beautiful and we never felt uncomfortable walking about in this area. That is where to find the nearest supermarket by the way (10mins walk). Don't head down toward the port like the rep advises as the supermarket is at least a 40min walk away.

We had a very relaxing holiday and would definetly recommend this hotel to anyone as long as you are not expecting to be able to buy the usual cheap tourist rubbish from local shops and you are not expecting to go clubbing everynight.

My/Our Holiday Review:

On arrival at Malaga airport you are direct to a mini-bus, and in case you have not already noticed from the brochure and worked out that 120 mins transfer time is TWO hours you are at this point advised by a rep (time to go to the toilet !) who does NOT escort the bus to the hotel.

The hotel is very old - in nice gardens but the rest of the hotel is not looked after very well.

No doubt at one time this hotel was a top hotel (even Winston Churchill stayed here) but it has now gone down hill !!

Not good for people with bad breathing problems, as the hotel is damp.

The bedside lamps were held together with black tape. Bathroom tiles and bedroom carpet not very clean.

No two rooms in the hotel are alike and some people were far from impressed with what they were given. (Some had to wait for a room to be made ready !)

Food was "run of the mill" all inclusive which you had to use the microwave (provided) to heat up most of the time.

The evening entertainment is very basic and one night they let the local people in to take over (drinking and dancing) and you feel pushed out !

This hotel is no good for young people (full of OAP long stay) or anyone who likes to stay up after 11pm, if you do you will find a security guard (with a gun) putting lights out and asking you to be quiet even if you are making minimum noise. (i.e. talking in a group !!)

He tells you it keeps the old people happy, who seem to be in charge at this hotel.

The bar closes 11pm SHARP !

4 star in name only (more 2+ - 3 star)

The resort is no more than a Spanish port town, dirty, and not worth a visit.

If you do go (and most operators are pulling out such as Cosmos, First Choice) then vist Gibraltar, very cheap !! (30 mins away by taxi),

and Rhonda by train (station about 15mins walk away)

The Airtours rep only visted twice a week.

Hotel staff were not very friendly.

This is the second year running that we have been to this villa which you book directly through website. It is only a couple of years old and it is absolutely perfect for a chill out holiday and relaxation. The villa has every possible item you will need for a self catering holiday and the best nights we had were when we had a bar-b-que and were in and out of the pool. The nearest resort, which is quite spanish, is Torre Del Mar. There is a fabulous chinese restaurant there called Hong Kong which serves very reasonably priced tasty food. We also headed to Torrox which has a sea front full of restaurants and a nice promenade to walk along. About 15 minutes away is a big shopping complex called ElGenio which is very cosmopoliton and over the road is a great waterpark. The views are amazing from the terrace but if you walk a little further up the path you will get even better views of the surrounding area. Try Marbella/Puerto Banus, Gibralter and Granada.

You will have a fanastic holiday here - enjoy!

We arrived at the beach house g19 Bahia Dorada after a long and difficult flight and were very dis gruntelled. We found it difficult to find and got lost several times. We quickly went to bed to sleep off our terrible journey. When we woke up having not really viewed the site or property very much the night before we were all delighted on what we found. The house which fronted directly on to the beach from a garden in front of the patio doors was superbely furnished in a far Eastern theme with the largest settee i have ever seen. The kitchen which we were told was just refurbished was superb and spacious with every thing necessary to cook those gourmet dinners which suited my wife who absolutely adores cooking. The living room was quite large as two were the two bedrooms. We especially liked the main bedroom with its four poster bed. It had its own small balcony which was great for sitting out on and drinking a beer while reading a paper with only the sound of the sea lapping in to disturb me. The garden area was great for BBQS

The place on the whole was very clean and well eqipped and although situated on the beach (which only ever had a few people sunbathing on) was very quite and over the week We all totally chilled out. The pool which was only about a minute walk from the house was fantastic. It had a life guard present most of the time which put the wifes mind at ease.

Over the week we were there we fell in love with the place and the house to such an extent that we are planning to return next year.

I should also point out that that house is located about 5 minutes drive from either Estepona or Sabinillas which are both fantastic places to eat out and explore.

Stayed in one of the suite's which was of a very high standard, very relaxing hotel set in the hills not far from the resort of Peurto Banus with all it's glitz and galm (excellent selection of shops, Car required).

The resort itself of Benhavis is very quiet, with an excellent selection of restaurants serving good quality food and wine.

The only negative feedback I can give is that when the restaurant became full at breakfast, they did struggle with availability of the usually wide range of food available, however overall an absolute grate place and well recommended place to stay

However I recently visited it again on 26th June 2005,and I am sorry to say that in my opinion this beautiful Hotel standards have fallen significantly, but thankfully only in the dinning room. The choice of food was very poor and the outlay and decor which again had changed.

The fist visit to the hotel I had to stand in a long queue for a vacant table. In July, half of the dinning room was closed due to the lack of people which surprised me as this is classed as high season.

The staff were,I must say just as good and all very polite and helpful at all times.

In my opinion unfortunatly this hotel should be reclassified to a very good 2*.

Booked some cheap flights through Monarch scheduled and saw this hotel whilst looking around the net. Got the best deal for accommodation through Broadway Travel (Luton)

Then found this review site and was not looking forward to it due to some of the comments!

Yes I would agree that this is a good / very good 3* hotel. However the rooms were excellent - larger than average, lovely large bathroom and VERY clean. Staff polite but not OTT or in your face. The hotel is right on the beach which is clean, pleasant and fairly quiet (Apart from the 'lookie looks!')

We went All Inclusive as it was such a great deal. Good selection of drinks included, food OK - not brilliant. Best bit was the majority of guests were older, Saga use it a lot which at first is a bit strange but you soon come to appreciate the manners and patience of the 50+ brigade. No pushing and shoving and very few noisey brats!

We had a couple of excellent nights in Marbella / Puerto Banus (12 miles or so,) and also went up to Mijas town in the mountains (10 miles) on a couple of nights to some superb restaurants with breathtaking views.

Only poor point is the pool which is very shallow and no good at all for swimming.

In summary, not a hotel to go to if you are looking for a lively party every night. But if like us on this occaision you are looking for a good, cheap, clean beach hotel as a base to explore the area I couldn't reccommend a better value place!

My/Our Holiday Review:

Rated a four star, but more like a good 3*

suited for more independant traveller, i was half board, usually i would go b&b, but as the deals for this hotel are usually so good i went half board, sometimes swapping evening for lunch, the food was better at lunch, food was no more than reasonable again more 3 than 4*

beach was ok, but you are cut off from main resorts, a short bus or taxi journey will take you to Fuengirola, the small urbanisation which surrounds the hotel is actually quite nice, certainly better than the urban sprawls of Calahonda, most types of restaurants , quite a few pubs, you will of course miss these if you are all inclusive, rooms are not to bad, nice bathrooms, and balconys, t.v. has bbc1 and bbc2,

some sites selling this hotel claim to give complimetary car parking, which is untrue, you park outside the hotel in a local free car park, approx 100yds away, parking inside hotel car park is 10 euros per day, very steep i thought,

guests at the time were, saga, from u.k. fair amount of spanish and german.

not bad to use as a base to visit the costa del sol, as very close to dual carriageway, and only couple of miles off toll motorway at calahonda entrance.

My/Our Holiday Review:

My partner booked this hotel last minute over the net and when I went to look it up to take a sneaky look I found this review site first. I was more than a little concerned about where we were heading as o-one had given it a particularly good rating. On the day of arrival I was determined to write a review as soon as I got back home!

Ok, so this hotel may not come up to the 4 star standards expected in the UK but it's NOT in the UK! The hotel itself isn't very inspiring from the outside and has quite a dated look - even though its only a year or so old. Our room was had twin DOUBLE beds, was spacious and had patio doors onto a balcony which looked down onto the pool and out to sea. The bathroom was again spacious and well-equipped. Cleanliness has been mentioned by others and - ok - it wasn't spotless but I was on holiday and had better things to do than inspect all the nooks and crannies! On the surface it was perfectly clean enough. Someone else mentioned 'rude' staff? make the effort to learn some Spanish! Even if it's only the basics - I'm sure it's appreciated by them.

All in all, I was very happy with the hotel and had a very enjoyable holiday indeed. If I had to make a negative point I guess it would be that the pool is really not practical for adults to swim in as it's only 4ft deep at its 'deep' end and ankle deep at the other. Im sure it's great for children though! I hope this helps.

My/Our Holiday Review:

This was our second excellent value deal from www alpharooms com this year. This time we flew with MyTravelLite. We like Thomson Holidays Platinum holidays, and this was a comparable quality holiday at half the price!

We think that the official 4 star rating of Gran Hotel is a bit over the top. We prefer to think of it as a very good 3 star hotel. Rooms are excellent, and facilities are generally good. Food is very good, considering the challenge of feeding an international guest list. Some younger people complained the hotel was too quiet and some older guests said it was too noisy. For us it was just right.

We liked the resort. It suited our need for a peaceful holiday. There is an excellent bus service to Fuengerola (tickets 85 cents) and Marbella. The bus stop is about a 7 minutes walk from the hotel. There is plenty happening in both resorts. We were especially impressed by Fuengerola Zoo.

We hired a car at the hotel car desk at very competitive rates. We went to Gibraltar and Ronda, and we were glad we went to both. (Prices in Gibraltar for alcohol and cigarettes are about half of what they are in Spain.)

We travelled from Malaga Airport by train to Fengerola (less than 2 Euros but beware that the ticket machine does not always accept notes) and then by taxi (11 Euros). On our return we used the hotel's taxi transfer service (about 36 Euros). We would do the same again.

Overall, we were delighted with the excellent value for money we had on this holiday.

the hotel claims to be 4 star, but i find this hard to believe, the rooms are very nice and spacious, with lots of storage space for your luggage and the air conditioning actually works as does the radio and tv but this maybe due to the fact that the hotel is just over twelve months old! The bathrooms were very nice and the maid comes everyday, but i still do not think it is worthy of 4 stars but definatley 3. i went all inclusive and found the food to vary greatly, sometimes it was good sometimes its was not. the hotel staff were very polite, my girlfriend bought a cocktail (not included in the all inclusive!) which was made by a waiter who did not know how to make it but tried anyway, 5 minutes later when we sat down another waiter noticed it was not right so he took it away and exchanged it for a proper one. the pool is perfect for small children and toddlers but not for grown adults as at its deepest is only about 1.5 meters deep and this is only in a small area of the pool as it starts only a few centimeters deep and over a large distance slopes to 1.5 meters.

Having read some of the reviews that people have written about this hotel, I was dreading our holiday. However, the hotel was comfortable, rooms were excellent, the staff were friendly and the food was thoroughly enjoyable. There were the people of course, who ate chips, rice and veg for meals and would not try the meat and others who made chip butties at every meal but I felt sorry for them as they missed some very tasty food. There was no problem with the all inclusive as had been indicated by several reviews I read. Wine was available with lunch and dinner and the measures in the bar were very generous, if not too generous.

Overall, we had a very enjoyable stay at the Gran Hotel and would have no hesitation in returning. We holiday at least 5 times a year and have paid a lot more to stay in places that tour operators should not be allowed to put people, particularly be carefull of Airtours.

Very good 4* hotel less than 18 months old probably the best hotel we have been to, a very high standard of accomodation in the room as well. The food is the usual Spanish fare but if you want fish & chips go to Blackpool!

Staff are all very friendly and helpful and there is a Europcar car hire on site.Mijas Costa is a very small place with no nightclubs and just two pubs and felt more like a suburb of a large town. The hotel is right next to the beach which means you are pestered all the time by sunglass & handbag sellers. The pool is a splashpool only and you have to go outside of the hotel to get to it.Its used by all the major holiday companies including Saga but its not really a hotel for young children.

If you want a day out go to Gibraltar it took about an hour to get in but with no VAT and low tax you can buy 200 fags for £ 7.00 and lots of other goodies very cheap. So if you are looking for a very restfull holiday this is the place to go.

Just had an excellent holiday at Dona Lola in calahonda, apartments have just been refurbished and are lovely, the grounds are well kept, and the staff are very helpful. There are some lovely restarants across the road, one that we found and I cannot rate highly enough was Millikans, just next door to Barclays Bank, the food was amazing all home cooked by an excellent chef and very reasonable, another one is Farfalles, further down the road. Another one is the excellent Chinese in the El Zocco complex, I cannot remember the name but it is the smaller one of the two. One to give a miss is the Villa Paradiso in the same complex, my chicken was pink, and one of the meals did not come till the rest of us had eaten, for which we received no apology, and no discount off the bill, they also charge 1.50 euros per person cover charge before you even sit down, the food was decidedly average for the price they charged, which was very expensive.

My/Our Holiday Review:

This year we decided to book a holiday direct rather than go through a tour operator. We booked through the website holidayrentals a brilliant site. I took a long time studying this site trying to find what i thought was going to be our perfect holiday.

The apartment was a two bedroom apartment on the Dona Lola resort in Calahonda, the actual complex was beautiful and faultless, the pool and surrounding area was beautiful with plenty of sund beds and lots of room overlooking the sea, had steps which lead directly down to the beach where there were further free sunbeds for Dona Lola guests use. The grounds were beatiful and well kept. There was a more than adequate gym, along with an indoor pool, ample restaurants and a supermarket on site, absolutely perfect.

Unfortunately the area outside of the complex was not very nice situated on a main (motorway) road, although there were plenty of bridges to enable you cross the road safely. The part of the complex that we stayed on was privately owned and the accomodation had NOTHING to do with the Macdonald Resorts. Our apartment was No 1 La Pita and was the pits, when we first walked on the the complex we thought we had arrived in a very classy place, but then we meet a rep on the corner by a telephone box who showed us to our apartment and it was a real culture shock.

The place we very dingy, small, old fashioned and extremely dirty, I could have cried. Once the rep had gone and we had chance to look around it got no better. The kitchen was not bigger than a cupboard, it contained an old fridge washing machine and a microwave, all of which look extremely tatty. in the living room there were two sofa beds which i would not let my dog sleep on asthey were filthy when i sat on one of them i could feel the grit with my hands. There was a portable airconditioning unit in the corner which barely worked and cobwebs everywhere aroung the top of the walls and cupboards. In the other corner there was a tv and dvd player.

The patio also left a let to be desired, not somewhere where I would like to sit and spend my evenings. we rented the apartment as a two bedroom with airconditioning. When we went up stairs to the second bedroom it contained nothing but a set of bunk beds and was far too small any adults we could not walk into the room as it was far to small the only way in was to climb over the bed. In the bedroom there was a small window but no airconditioning, there was no way that my two daughters could have slept in there, they probably would have suffocated. The main bedroom was adequate and did have aiconditioning, it also had another patio overlooking the sea. We eventually decided that there was no way that we could have stayed in this apartment.

We went to the Macdonald Dona Lola complex reception, and an extremely lovely attendant explained to us that these apartments had nothing to do with the Macdonald Resorts, however he was able to rent to us one of there own rooms, at a charge. This room was a one bedroom apartment, with airconditioning and furnished to a very high standard. Although it was only a one bedroom apartment it was plenty big enough for us four. When we walked in to the apartment we were gobsmacked that on the same complex there could be two extremes as this room was absolutely beautiful.

We spent the entire holiday in this room and with the beautiful grounds and facilities we throughly enjoyed ourselves. Book direct with Macdonalds, you will get extremely good value for money, because if we had of booked direct with Macdonalds we would have saved ourselves money and had a better apartment to go to.

This is a get away from it all area we liked it so much we are returning back end of April, although we were only a short ride from our favourite place Torreblanca and surrounding villages. Torreblanca/Los Boliches have some very good eating eatablishments, try Fish Alley or for basic well cooked food a great brekkie and Sunday lunch try the Wessex in Torreblanca we have returned here several times and always receive a warm welcome from geordie Di.

We love the Costa Del Sol although some areas can be a bit brash take the time to get out and about and you will see some fantastic scenery, beautiful lakes and villages.

Hotel Era is a quality hotel situated in the mountains behind Malaga.

The decor and furnishing were all of a high standard, as was the service, with the owners being attentive to their guests comfort and enjoyment.

The bedrooms were immaculate; extremely spacious with very comfortable beds and crisp bed linen. The views from the rooms were superb, overlooking the mountains and valleys sweeping down to the sea.

The food was excellent - everything freshly prepared and beautifully presented.

A car is needed to reach the hotel and to get around, and the immediate area is well worth exploring. There are numerous small restaurants in Casarabonela, serving good quality, inexpensive spanish fare.

I cannot recommend this hotel highly enough, for it's location, quality of environment (beautiful gardens, tranquil with magnificent views) and high standards.

10 out of 10. This finca was renovated early 04, and is immaculate. Great private pool, patio area, BBQ and gardens. Brand new kitchen [every utensil you want], new showerroom [large] and new mattresses. Owners are extremely helpful, a few minutes walk away but respected our privacy. Beautiful views, very peaceful. Watch out for the eagle.

Car hire definitely recommended although the owner would pick up from airport. No bars/ clubs/ restaurants within easy walking distance, but plenty within a 5 mins drive. Supermarket in Coin - 5 mins away. 30 mins or so from Malaga airport. Ideal location to take advantage of the Costa del Sol amenities [bars, huge beaches, large supermarkets, English speaking chemists etc] but far enough away to be rural. Fantastic to find a "smaller villa" with private pool. I can't recommend this holiday enough. www costadelsol-vacationrentals com/Fincalacuadra html

My/Our Holiday Review:

This hotel is the first hotel we have stayed at in Spain where the staff smile and actually seem to enjoy their work and appreciate the customer and their needs for a good holiday. The management were always in attendance at meal times enquiring and showing real concern that everything was satisfactory. They need not have worried as the food was superb with marvellous choice for all courses even for a fussy eater like myself.

From the check-in, to the quality of room and service received this was a hotel that deserved recommendation to anyone looking for relaxation and high quality accomodation.

We booked flights with Thomson Holidays fly who now seem to be beating the BMI baby group in price regularly from Cardiff. Car hire through the reliable Carjet at £57 for one week for a Fiesta with a/c. The hotel was booked directly through Riu.com, with double room with seaview h/b costing approx £260.

The resort itself was not particularly exciting but it was February and not everything was open. It did seem to have a predominately German influence with only 2 English bars in the resort. It was only a 10 minute drive to Nerja which is much more geared to multi-national entertainment.

The pool area was immaculately maintained, the gardener was always in evidence doing general tidying of the area. The animation team worked hard day and night to entertain and amuse the guests. The pool bar was open for snacks and drinks during the day.

The unfortunate thing was that we only had 1 week there, as we both agreed that it was the most relaxing holiday we had taken, the weather was good and the venue faultless. We will certainly return and will look at the Riu hotels at other destinations where we travel for future holidays.

This is the third review I have placed on this site & have tried to be informative & give reflections on 'how the holiday was me', but to inform the things that others may not like.

We have just returned fron 18 nights over Christmas & New Year at the Hotel Riu Ferrara at Torrox Costa on the Costa Sol.This is the first longer stay holiday I have booked flights, tranfer & hotel separately and it has worked well, saving on the 'package prices'

The hotel earns all the Excellant catagories. The situation in beautiful.I had a sea view room ( 529) which took in the pool area and the sea with the morning & afternoon sun. ( the other wing having that later the evening sun)

The service from all the staff is first class the decor & cleanliness of all areas is also excellant.

Food at Breakfast & Dinner is buffet with a huge & varied selection. On arrival you will be asked to select an either a 18:00 or 20:00 sitting for dinner. We selected 20:00 which allowed for later day out.

Over the Christmas & New Year period the hotel seemed to at full or near capacity, so if you do not like a busy atmosphere with people selecing their food from the buffets, then this is not for you--but you do miss a wonderfull selection!

The hotel ( & resort) also seemed attract mainly German guests, but we like this mix of nationalities & also met Dutch & Belgian guests.

There are many bars & restaurants along the front at Terrox Costa but shopping is not extensive.Take the short bus drive into Nerja or longer into Malaga whch offers more than a shopping experince!

If you want a family holiday by the sun bed with attentive sevice this is the place for you.If you want an excellant hotel with a combination of hotel sunbathing and excursions, this is great. If you want 'quiet Spain' try a Paradore!

The Rui Ferrara offers exactly what it is sets out to do to( & does it very well!!) you have to decide that this is the right holiday for you?

My/Our Holiday Review:

Have just returned from the Riu Ferrera and it is well worth it's 4T rating. The hotel itself is excellent; spacious, spotlessly clean and with the best food I've ever come across. However the only problem is the entertainment (or lack of it!)- it is extemely poor and certainly not up to the standard of other 4 star hotels. We were there for 14 nights and only had 2 good nights - a fantastic magician and some Chinese acrobats. The rest of the time it was singers (well, that's what they were called - Simon Cowell would have had a field day!!) and dancers. One night the singer didn't turn up and we had extended Mini Disco! I know we were in Spain but flamenco 5 times is a bit much!! The daytime activities were a bit hit and miss too. The reps did announce some of them but I got the impression that they'd prefer it you didn't join in. It's a real shame that the entertainment was so poor otherwise I'd go back tomorrow.

As for the resort it was much busier than I expected although the beach could have been cleaner and the sea was very rough at times. I wouldn't say Costa Torrox was particularly Spanish just not suited to British tourists as they are definately in the minority.

My/Our Holiday Review:

As mentioned above "Best Hotel in Torrox" mind you it seemed to be the only one there !!

But it certainly deserves its 4 stars.

Reception very friendly, rooms clean and spacious, good maid service.

Also, never witnessed this before, but we had 2 spot checks on the rooms cleanliness by people with clip boards.

They evidently take this very seriously.

Very large pool area, spotlessly clean, normally plenty of beds and comfy pads.

The Hotel was not dominated by say, German guests, or English guests, there was truly a diverse group of nationalities, which was excellent.

Rear Hotel gates led straight out on to the Promenade which was clean and well kempt. Beach was fine up to the water line then very "pebbly"

Thus preventing the romantic hand in hand stroll along the water's edge.

Plenty of restaurants to choose from, we never had a bad meal.

Very large well stocked Supermarket across the busy road from the Hotel

Downside is there was little to do during the day. However, access to Malaga, Nerja, Granada was relatively simple, local buses, hire car etc.

Large market on Sunday morning starting right outside the Hotel.

Lots of building work off the main road, but not intrusive whether in the Hotel appartment or around the Pool.

Would definitely recommend this Hotel.

My/Our Holiday Review:

Booked the hotel direct from the Riu site all prices quoted in Euro so you have to do the maths our price was e950.40 for 12 nights half board (which at current rates works out at about £650)we spoke to 4 people that by chance we met 2 years ago at a Riu hotel in costa de la luz, they had forked out £800 a piece for 14 nights!! and to add more pain they could not stay the first night at the hotel because it was over booked and had to go to a Riu hotel in Nerja (this will become clearer later)

The hotel was of an excellent standard our room was fine even though it was on the side, clean and maintained that way daily. Food was of the standard we have come to expect from Riu hotels with plenty of choice and variation and some themed nights.

The unfortunate part was the choice of dates we picked for our stay, we had looked at this site and read mention of an Irish Dance Championship, and yes you guessed it, the championship was on during the first few days of our stay, hence the over booking problem??

We are not averse to music and dance but it did become a little painful when it followed you everywhere in the hotel, the bars, the dining room, the pool area even in the lifts and the corridors. Ther was no getting away from it. Well thats not quite true as there are along the promenade many bars and restaurants to grab your interest which is where we spent most nights. The former is one reason another was the bar prices of the hotel which unlike costa de la luz did not folow the local line and in some cases were 200% dearer. It was the only hotel in the area but that was the case in costa de la luz, the prices only made paying customers look elsewhere. As an example a bottle of wine for dinner was ?11 the same bottle of wine across the road at a supermarket was ?2.39!!!!

While on the subject of drink if I had one gripe about the hotel it was the bars, their position and makeup and their lack of atmosphere. Add to this and it is rare one or two waiters that were less than attentive and lacked any interest and I think you get my drift.

The entertainment was adequate but not a must see. There was a kids disco most nights until the main act came on some nights that was more entertaining than the main act.

One other gripe (I promise) was the pool area which had loungers and parasols galore, trouble was they were packed together like sardines in a can, this was at it's worst when the hotel was full of the dancers, it did ease up and some were stacked away creating some much needed space but even then it felt crowded. No worries there are many loungers and parasols on the beach just outside the hotel some of which have a bar opposite. They do charge e3 per person for the day but we found this more relaxing than the poolside.I have to mention the beach it is black sand and pebbles no golden beaches along this strech of Spain.

We had a car for our stay and managed to get around quite a bit, found Nerja interesting plenty of small streets and bars and shops very liverly, especially at night.

Visited Marbella and Porto Banus, ok so we saw some Rollers and a Ferrari two of the rollers were driven by the same man along the front, he either has the valleting monopoly for the area or it was a stunt for the visitors.

Be prepared for the prices which are a little steeper than the other resorts. Don't get me wrong I don't mind paying even for a salad (?11 each)but we waited 55 minutes for it nice though it was when it arrived.

We passed on Torremolinos it speaks for itself, did find a little village in the hills named Frigiliana which was a typical Moorish village worth a visit (be prepared for some steep stepped narrow streets.

Overall the stay was comfortable and refreshing, first impressions were improved upon once the dance competition had passed (dates to stay clear of appear to be (end of May 1st week of June)hotel slighty lacks character but met all the needs otherwise.

We just wanted a week in a good hotel in the sun a short flight away. We got it!

The hotel is lovely, designed in Andulucian Moorish style with fountains and courtyards. If you want the best views ask for a room overlooking the pool. When we arrived, having booked a two bed apt, we were told that they were overbooked! Help. But there were apologies all around and we got 2 one bed apts with breakfasts added. Our teenager was thrilled to have the apt next to us. Very adult. This hotel runs a good entertainment programme for adults and small (under11s) children, People who used the children's club were all praise.

Very international Spanish, German , Belgium. Torrox Costa itself is nothing special, but it is low rise and there are good supermarkets and restaurants. Try the Caribe, left out the back of the hotel 9 euros for three course meal and drink - good standard, and English enough for picky teens. I would say that teens would find it dull, but ours just wanted to sleep and read so he was ok. Went on 2 coach trips - Granada is a must do. The other was Gibraltar and it was TOO far - 3 hours on a coach each way!! However, it was a sunny day when we got there and teen enjoyed the apes. Do not do this tour with small children. If we went again we would hire a car. In fact, it was so relaxing that we might. The apts are very new and clean and the staff smiling and friendly. There was a wedding reception on the last night and the bridegroom's mother was in traditional dress.

Conclusion - Sovereign were good, you could do it yourself, and the hotel is great.

My/Our Holiday Review:

We went to the Riu Ferrera over Xmas & Ne Year because we had been the previous New Year to Nerja, and loved it. We could not get accommodation there this time.

The Hotel and self catering apartments which we were in were exellent, the staff were so friendly and helpful.

The weather this year was not so kind as last year so not much sunbathing on the many loungers that were around the massive pool, there is also an indoor heated pool with gymnasium & sauna.

Torrox is nothing more than a promenade with a good beach, as this resort caters for the German market not a lot of Brit style restaurants. There were many closed because it was close season, there is a lack of bars in the area around the hotel, so we had to stay and use the hotel "Entertainment" which was not too bad, by no means very professional but run by an enthusiastic team of youngsters who again were very friendly, and tried hard to make sure you enjoyed yourselves.

Supermarket was very close at hand just a few hundred metres away and across a busy road. buses into Nerja were about hourly and cheap 77 cents each and took all of 15 mins.

Our Thomson Holidays rep Stuart was friendly and efficient, even to the extent of organising a "Escape committee" i.e 2 mini buses to get us into Nerja for the New Year celebrations on the Balcon de Europe ( which as we discovered last year was the highlight of our trip )and get us back of course, all went off perfectly.

The only trip we really enjoyed was the "Mamas & Tapas" trip, dont be afraid of the thought of going into a strangers house for a meal, the "Mama" we had Maria was wonderful, even though she had no English we all communicated and had a fantastic time.

The only critisism We had was the price of the "Special Xmas Day Buffet" in the Hotel which was nothing special but cost us e70.00 each, then to crown it all we went for the " Special New Years Eve Buffet" which again foodwise was not special and cost us e90:00 each, so be warned

My/Our Holiday Review:

This beautiful hotel, approx one year old, is impressive, romantic and situated at a lovely promenade along the beach. We were with 8 persons and had hired cars. There was more than enough to be seen: Nerja, Granada-Alhambra, Dolphins in the sea, Sierra Nevada, beautiful small villages, etc. The people behave well and driving in this part of Spain is no problem.

In the hotel with a beautiful interior, we had 4 bedrooms, that were clean and well equipped. A balcony with sea view and view on the beutiful garden and large swimming pool.

Breakfast and dinner cannot be better than in this hotel: excellent food and service.

Staff is very friendly, helpful and humorous.

There is enough entertainment in the hotel during the day and in the evening.

I celebrated my birthday in the hotel with champagne from the house, both at our room and at dinner, at a special table.

I can write pages with examples that illustrate the superiority of this hotel, compared to others, but I will summerize it: it is by far the best hotel I have ever visited.

I recommend this hotel to everyone who would like to visit the Costa del Sol.

When I visit the Costa del Sol another time I know one thing: I 'll stay at this hotel again.

My/Our Holiday Review:

We are on the last day of our 2 week break at the Riu Ferrara in Torrox Costa. Our 2 bed appartment is very clean and comfortable, but the double bed in bedroom 2 is only 3/4 size and the bathroom is quite small. Be careful to avoid an appartment overlooking the busy main road which runs on the land side of the hotel. Other guests are predominantly a mix of Spanish, German and Dutch.

We booked breakfast in advance as part of the package, with the intention of eating dinner at the hotel or in local restaurants as we pleased, but some nights the hotel restaurant was full when we tried to book. Service from staff in all parts of the hotel has been excellent.

Local eating places in the resort are ok for families, but not brilliant quality - loads of Pizza/Pasta type stuff.

There is the usual towel run in the morning unfortunately, but if you miss out on a sunbed you can go to the beach straight outside the hotel gate. There are plenty of sunbeds for hire although the beach itself is predominantly black sand and a bit pebbly. It is used mainly by the locals and gets quite busy - pedaloes available etc.

Hotel entertainment at night is of variable quality, but the animation team seem to try hard. Maybe we are the odd ones out, as plenty of other guests appear to enjoy it, but I think something gets lost when the team have to translate everything into 4 languages!

Whilst the hotel is very good overall, the main drawback is its location in the resort of Torrox Costa which could never be described as pretty. Backing the traffic free promenade is a line of well kept but fairly dated unattractive appartment blocks. Torrox Costa caters for the German/Dutch market predominantly, and has the usual range of supermarkets, tourist eating places etc. It is a clean resort, but not one you would want to take many photographs of.

At night we have often driven into nearby Nerja, which, whilst being fairly touristy (mainly Brits), also gives you a glimpse of more taditional Spanish life if you look hard enough. There are loads of places to eat in Nerja, some overlooking the sea and the famous Balcon.

There is not that much to do for families around this area outside the hotel and beach, so I would recommend car hire. We used Crown Car Hire at the airport, prebooked over the net - very good and well priced with car collection in the terminal building itself.

There is a small waterpark at Torre De Mar, 15 minutes back towards Malaga from the resort with an indoor shopping centre with a good range of shops next door to it. Other than that it is a longer drive to Granada etc.

In summary, talking to other families around the pool, there is a common view that the hotel is very good, but no/one can understand why they chose this resort to build it in!

My/Our Holiday Review:

I'll be the first to admit I took a bit of a gamble booking this holiday to Costa Torrox, a place I'd never heard of before. We needed as short a flight from London as possible as our three-year-old boy is a bit of a livewire and we weren't sure how he'd get on with flying (or whether we'd keep our sanity and patience on the plane with him!!) - but we wanted to ensure warm weather and a beach. We contacted our travel agent, Dial-A-Flight as they were excellent last year when I used them for my holiday to Cyprus, they managed to find flights that nobody else could find and put together a superb package.

They looked at various options and most were unsuitable, but eventually suggested I try the Riu Ferrara at Costa Torrox on the Costa Del Sol. A flight time of just over two hours was a major draw, but I'd never heard of Costa Torrox so I decided to do my usual Internet trawl for reviews. And could I find anything? Very little in fact.

I worked out that the Riu Ferrara was opened last June (2003) and that Costa Torrox was near the more well known town of Nerja. I also discovered the Riu Ferrara was a favourite hotel for the Germans. But apart from the standard brochure photos and the one positive review I found, there was very little else to go on. But I threw normal caution to the wind and booked anyway.

And what a good choice. I can honestly say this hotel lived up to its four-star rating, easily equaling the quality of other four-star hotels I've stayed at in places as far apart as Cyprus, Mauritius and the Caribbean.

The excellent deal that Dial-A-Flight found us did NOT include transfers from Malaga so I decided to hire a car in advance. After again trawling around I used www malaga-carhire com as they offer on-airport car pickup from Malaga (no bus rides to get to the car) - but beware, they trade through Crown car hire, as do Dollar and Thrifty (I think) so when I arrived at Malaga airport, I found the Crown car-hire desk had the longest queue of all the companies. But they did upgrade my car without me even asking and were very efficient so I cannot complain.

Getting to Costa Torrox was easy once you found the E15/A7 motorway to Almeria - a straight run right through to Torrox taking just over an hour on a Motorway I'd love to have in Southern England - relatively quiet with fantastic views of the hills!

On arrival at the hotel, the reception staff were VERY helpful and offered a glass of champagne to welcome us. Nice touch. Off to the room. We booked a two-bed apartment on a room-only basis as we like to eat out. The Riu Ferrara is part hotel and part apartment blocks, but all guests can use all the facilities. Beach towels are free (just need a e10 refundable deposit per towel). The apartment was well appointed and nicely decorated. One bedroom with double bed, another with two single beds. A sofa in the lounge area also turned into a double bed. The lounge area had satellite TV, the only English speaking channel was CNN, but tune to D:SN a German sports channel to pick up some decent footy (they showed the England:Japan game live during our stay - but commentary in German unfortunately).

In one bedroom was a safety deposit box, which used the apartment entry card (someone thought about this!). The safe cost e10.50 for the week. No mini-bar in the apartments (not sure whether the hotel rooms have them). Bathroom was standard fare, with bidet (useful for those sand-encrusted feet!) - the water took a while to get hot each time, but when it did the shower was excellent. The kitchen was small but functional the only two things we could have done with were a corkscrew and a Microwave - but everything else we needed was there including a much used fridge. Air conditioning was built in and vented to all bedrooms and lounge area, so was relatively quiet, not like these ugly wall mounted external units some hotels fit as an afterthought. Overall, I was very happy with the quality of the apartment and the daily maid service was excellent.

And the hotel itself? Well, the pool was HUGE and thoughtfully designed with shallow entry at one end for young-uns, uniform depth at the other end (useful for water polo) and a deeper bit in the middle, wide enough to do lengths if you really felt the urge. Very clean and tended to each evening. There was also a small circular baby pool (knee deep) which was perfect for our three-year old. My only suggestion here is that the hotel put some shading over this pool as the sun was very hot for the toddlers and the sun umbrellas were around the main pool.

During our stay, the hotel was VERY full due to them staging the 2004 European Irish Dance Championships - this meant the pool area was very busy during the day. There was a huge number of sun loungers and sun umbrellas (fixed into the deck so they couldn't be moved) but even so, by about 11am I noticed people struggling to find free loungers. And even though the hotel notify guests that loungers must not be reserved early in the morning, I saw little effort to remove the plentiful number of towels on empty loungers as suggested in the hotel welcome pack. Maybe it was the Germans living up to their much deserved reputation!

The gardens are well tended but as the hotel only opened last year, the trees and bushes need a little longer to fill out. In a couple of years they will no doubt add much needed extra shade in the grassy areas. The whole hotel is surrounded by a fence (but a nice fence) and an ornate gate (activated by your room key) leads out the back entrance onto the long promenade and beach. This made the pool area and gardens feel very secure although I did notice a group of four cheeky local teenagers sneaking in each day for a dip in the pool - but they were no bother and certainly did nothing suspicious.

Also outside is a neat little cabin used for the Miniclub which was open a couple of times a day for the over fours. By the Miniclub and baby pool was a small park area with a couple of swings a slide and a small springy ride-thing. This proved popular with the kids but again lack of shade meant the rubberised safety flooring got intensely hot - sandles required during the day. Also nearby was a small sunken tennis court area which the kids used for kicking footballs around.

The Animation team put on activities for Adults, Teenagers and Kids and although I preferred to vegetate in the sun, plenty of people took part in activities such as Aqua gym, water polo, hockey, air rifle shooting and shuffle board. The nice thing was that these activities never became a nuisance for those not taking part. Inside the hotel was a small gym and an indoor pool, but the good weather rendered this unused during our stay.

And the food? Fantastic. Breakfast was simply immense with fruit, cereals, full cooked hot breakfast, pastries, yoghurts etc etc. There were even about 6 or 7 types of bread which you could slice yourself - delicious. Evening meals were buffet style themed affairs but in reality they laid on enough different food that you would not go hungry - there were even four type of pasta each evening for those who didn't want the main meals. All food was superb quality. Although we went room-only, we had breakfast every day and evening meals on three occasions.

If your board doesn't include meals, you have to go to reception just before eating, they will check with head-waiter that there is space and then you sign a slip at reception to put the food on your room account. You will then get a ticket to give to the head waiter when you enter the restaurant so they know you've paid! Simplicity itself, but it does mean you risk being turned away if they are particularly full. Evening meals were done in two settings and we found the earlier sitting did in fact get full (families wanting to feed the kids) so bear this in mind if you go room-only. There is also a dining area outside for lunchtime snacks, drinks and ice creams .

On one occasion there was some confusion between head waiter, myself and reception. After getting reception to sort it out (which they did very efficiently) we were blessed with a free bottle of wine the next time we ate in the restaurant, the head waiter said it was because of the previous confusion. This is a good example of their attempts to keep everyone happy.

The hotel have a doctor who turns up for an hour each day. We had cause to use him as our little fella got conjunctivitis. Very good doctor, speaks very good English. Beware, he charges ?60 when you visit him and whilst you can claim this back on your holiday insurance, check that you don't have an excess (mine was £50 so I couldn't claim the doctors fee back)

What about Costa Torrox itself? The resort is mainly one long beach with a promenade running alongside. Roads run at right angles to the beach which means the main busy through road is at least 200 metres from the beach. This made the promenade safe and peaceful to walk along, especially in the evening. The promenade is dotted with restaurants, mainly the pasta and pizzeria variety, although we ate at the Pizzeria Ferrara one evening and had a very enjoyable meal (4 people, food, drink, desert - ?37 - about £25)

I wouldn't call Costa Torrox particularly pretty. Most of the buildings seem to be 6 storey apartment blocks, many of which were empty giving the feeling that we had visited off-peak. The long stretch of beach was relatively quiet (not shoulder-to-shoulder like some Costa Del Sol beaches) - this may be due to the fact that the beach is not particularly pretty either - it is a mix of black sand and shingle so not easy to make sandcastles with. However, there are a couple of guys who seem to make a living creating fantastic sand sculptures on the beach by the promenade - well worth a look. There doesn't appear to be much to do in Costa Torrox, which is probably why the pool area of the hotel was busy most days.

If you need a supermarket, you have the Mercadona just 50 yards from the hotel - excellent range of goods. For Chemist, there are two Pharmacia, one left and one right down the main street, each a mile from the hotel - my advice, take the one left out of the hotel - it's near a Repsol garage and had a better stock.

Directly across from the hotel is the 'Lady Club'. It is a lap-dancing club, but don't fret, I never saw anyone go in there and it didn't seem to affect the feel of the area.

If you have a car then one must-do visit is the Il Ingenio shopping mall. It is two junctions down the E15/A7 motorway towards Malaga just north of Torre Del Mar (about 15 mins from Torrox). Great for womens clothes shows (inc Mango and a HUGE Zara) - my wife and daughter assure me that the prices are very cheap (I wouldn't know). Plus they have a massive supermarket (Eroski) which sells just about anything you can think of.

As we had a hire car, we travelled around a bit. North of Costa Torrox is the town of Torrox itself - very pretty, with a small town square with locals going about their business and the old fellas whiling the day away chatting in the square. Beware, the roads are narrow and very steep so good calf muscles required. But very pretty with all the white painted buildings with flowers outside a lot of them.

Just North of Nerja, one motorway stop down from Torrox is a lovely little village in the hills called Frigiliana, apparently voted prettiest village in Andalusia. Again, very hilly but very picturesque. If driving, be aware that if you travel into the hills, the roads get very windy and often without barriers. The Spanish don't think twice about overtaking on blind corners either. My wife is usually a good passenger, but even she was sick after an hour winding our way around the hills north of Torrox town.

So, would I recommend the Riu Ferrara? If you like your hotels quiet then this isn't for you as it often feels busy, especially at mealtimes. But for a good family hotel or apartments it gets my thumbs up. Just a shame that Costa Torrox itself doesn't have much to offer.

My/Our Holiday Review: We booked independantly to stay at the Riu Torrox last November for a week and it was a really nice break. The hotel is situated in Torrox, not far from beautiful Nerja. Its grounds lead to the sea front promenade at Torrox which has a selection of restaurants, bars etc. It is a lovely art of teh Costa Del Sol and we would recommend hiring a car to explore. The hotel is large but that did not matter. it is well kept and the pool area was a good size. food is buffet style and dinner normally has two sittings, early or late.

My/Our Holiday Review:

Just wanted a chill out week with some sunshine and the sun shone every day! Booked the sister hotel Costa Del Sol Princess on the same complex but it closed early for the winter and we we transferred to the Andalucia Princess on an 'all inclusive' basis.

Before we went we read the reviews as always and were a bit apprehensive but needn't have been.

The hotel and grounds were immaculate.

The only complaint about the food was that there was so much variety that you just couldn't try it all! There was plenty of meats, fish, vegetables, salads, fruit, breads and desserts....a splendid selection....and as for the Full English breakfast....superb;(there were other options of course).

If you want a beach holiday then this will not be the hotel for you as it is not golden sands. It is remote as we all know by now but the public bus service is good.

Two things you must do. 1. Go to Rhonda up in the mountains....the journey is picturesque as is Rhonda itself. 2. Take the hotel's courtesy bus to Puerto Banus....have a wander round then catch the water ferry to Marbella which takes thirty minutes and take a look round there. Do the return journey and you still have time for a drink before catching the bus back to the hotel.

As we were all inclusive we didn't have to worry about the drinks prices and did feel sorry for other guests that had to tender money at every trip to the bar.

We did find that the waiter service at the basement bar was slow to say the least but after the first evening we then patronised the Piano Bar where service was good.

A big plus point with the Andalucia Princess was that smoking was not allowed in any of the public rooms and the unpolluted atmosphere was most pleasant especially in the restaurant and bar areas(they say ex-smokers are the worst!).

We never go to the same hotel twice but if we had to return here we would be delighted....it is worthy of it's four star rating.

My/Our Holiday Review:

Just returned from really good holiday at Andalucia Princess. We were a bit apprehensive after reading some of the reviews but don`t worry. Much of the crtism is exaggerated but go there with your eyes open.

The hotel is isolated but Esteopna and Puerto Banus are either a free bus ride or 12 and 15 euro taxi ride away. Locally there is Paco`s bar[ see previous reviews]and about 400metres from hotel is the Deli bar which has Sky Sports. There are some nice walks amongst the new apartments adjacent to the hotel which have landscaped and immaculately maintained public gardens.

The hotel facilties are generally very good. The pool area is excellent. Drinks are not cheap but they are not exhorbitant either as has been suggested in some reviews. A pint is about £3.20 and a brand name whisky £3.50 [and remember the measures are at least doubles]. The bar service is slow however.

The resturant served an execellent choice and we certainly did not get bored with the buffett. You did need to que to enter the resturant but usualy this was no more 5-10mins.

We went for a relaxing holiday and had no complaints. The secret at the Andalucia Princess is to chill out ,go with flow and don`t get wound up like some guests were about relatively minor issues.

Brochure said that hotel was situated out of main town of Estepona and this was true but there were local buses running every 20-30 mins so not a problem. Cheap as well - 1.36 euros each way. Same to get to Puerto Banus which is worth a visit.

Not much to do in and around hotel itself. We wanted a relaxing, chilling out holiday and this is exactly what we got, but got a bit bored after a few days. No local bars or shops to walk to - one very tiny shop about 20 mins walk away (over the footbridge spanning the dual carriageway and turn right past the chemist) which was useful for buying water and snacks as prices in hotel very expensive in comparison. Went for a stroll just outside hotel past where some exclusive apartments are being built and found a paved promenade which made a pleasant walk - lovely sunset over the sea. Could get back to hotel complex by walking along the beach. Hotel and grounds lovely and well maintained. We have been to other Princess hotels in the Thomson Holidays group and like the buffet style meals but didn't think the standard of food was as good as others we have been to but there was still a very good selection - sometimes a bit dry and overcooked but the salad choices were excellent.

Only went on one of the organized trips to a place called Rhonda. Was a great day out for sightseeing - good value for money.

This is a hotel for a quite holiday which we knew and suited us for a week This is a Thomson Holidays Platium Hotel why I really not sure. ? The hotel was more a 3 star rating

It was very clean the rooms were large but average. Plenty of sun beds with a good choice of pools it never seemed crowded.

Food was not good dried up although they tried to offer a choice it was just the standard that was the problem. Every night we had to join a long line of people waiting to get in to eat tried varying the times this made no difference.

Waiters were in different females waiting on tables were very long faced We had a okay holiday it was just a week meant to be relaxing which it was, if you normally go Thomson Holidays gold or Platium which we do this hotel not for you

My/Our Holiday Review:

Just returned from a one week break at the Adalucia Princess hotel.

We have stayed in Princess hotels before and this one is certainly up to standard.

The quality of furnishing is excellent and standards of cleanliness are high.

The accommodation is set out in six three-storey blocks around the swimming pools, there are lifts to all floors, if needed.

The food is OK, but the buffet is very similar each day - they have brought in a pasta counter, where you can choose from five different types of pasta, presumably part cooked, which are reheated, whilst your choice of sauce is cooked - this pasta option was offered most nights, but the selection of sauces never changed.

Minibar: The hotel will rent you a minbar, but will not allow you to keep your own drinks in it, they offer four minibar menus, 25.50euros for the cheapest and 104.50euros for the dearest - seems VERY expensive to me - You would think that they would charge a reasonable fee just to use the fridge.

Location: The hotel is very remote, there are no nearby bars or shops - hence the hotel charges ridiculously expensive prices for drinks. A 1.5litre bottle of water in the hotel shop costs 2.50 euros.

There is a small shop, ten minutes away - Walk out of the hotel entrance, right at the first roundabout and left at the second roundabout - Use the footbridge to cross the road, turn right off the bridge and a couple of hundred yards down the road on the left is the Farmacia, the shop is in the same building, round the side.

A six pack of 1.5litre bottles of water will cost you 3.00 euros.

Be aware that the shop is only open limited hours - it seems to be shut more often than not, but it does not really cater for the holiday maker - it is the local shop.

Entertainment in the hotel is poor - every night they had the same Spanish couple torturing some of our favourite songs!!!

BUT do not miss the Flamenco evening - it was excellent.

If you fancy a stroll after dinner, there is a pleasant stroll out of the hotel, turn left at the roundabout and walk through the PINK apartments to the sea - there is a good footpath, obviously built by the apartment developer, but only seems to be used by guests at the Andalucia Princess!

The beach near the hotel is not sandy and is not really suitable for sunbathing, if you want a good sandy beach - go to nearby Estepona.

The hotel provides a free courtesy bus service to Estepona and Puerto Banus

The Estepona bus departs at 11:00 and returns at 17:30

The Puerto Banus bus departs at 10:00 and returns at 16:30

You have to book the bus the night before at reception, they check your ticket carefully in the morning, but on the return journey, everyone gets on the bus unchecked and it goes on time - if you're late, you'll miss it.

There is a good local bus no 27, that goes to Estepona - the bus stop is over the bridge, near the Famacia - it costs 1.31euros each way - Stay on the bus to the terminus - makes it easier for coming back. You can only buy a single ticket on the bus. On the way back, if you catch the bus at the terminus, you have to buy your ticket from the ticket office.

If you want a day on the beach and want to do some shopping - catch the 27 to Estepona and get off the bus when you see the large Carrefour supermarket - a couple of minutes further on is an excellent beach - on your way back you can buy water, etc in the Carrefour and the bus stop is right outside.

The bus stop in the opposite direction is at the foot of the bridge, on the hotel side - you can get to San Pedro, Puerto Banus and Marbella.

Weather: Was glorious, beautiful sunshine every day, temperatures around 32 degrees.

Overall: We got a good deal, we went for one week with the intention of getting some rest and some sun, the hotel and resorts were quiet and we enjoyed ourselves.

My/Our Holiday Opinion:

My partner and I have used Thompson/Portland for years and loved their holidays. This T/P hotel was an exception. No way was it a platinum standard. Luckily we only stayed for a three day break, any longer and I would have lost the will to live.

A resident cockroach kept creeping up through the overflow in the sink together with its offspring. We would plug it up with loo roll each day the cleaner would remove it! Having said that the room was beautifully clean but stank of damp and the silver curtain (to stop the heat and light penetrating) was black with mould all along the bottom with damp. The bed clothes also reeked of damp.

No bin in the room, or toilet, the soap container in the shower had been removed! the hairdryer did not work. On arrival we asked at reception the whereabouts of the dining room and was told it was over the other side of the complex,. Their English left a lot to be desired This turned out to be the only restaurant on site with a very poor menu. The dining room was in actual fact in the same building as the reception.

The food was abysmal. Most of the meat was inedible, the potatoes were always dried up and having to queue for 15 mins whilst they waited for people to vacate their tables was a joke, especially when there were lots of spare tables but just not laid up. How difficult is it to shove a tablecloth on together with knives and forks. The staff were presumably overworked and underpaid, very miserable the only saving grace in the restaurant were the puddings, really good and a good selection.

The 'greeting' meeting was a waste of time. The rep said she had lived is Spain for about 16 years and then all she did was try and sell outings. She read from notes hardly lifting her head throughout and she did not tell us about the local shop, she did not tell us about the beautiful walk along the promenade and we only found it by accident. She did not tell us the water was drinkable., in small amounts.

The drinks were an exorbitant price and as there were no bars or alternatives within 6 miles, one had no choice. I could go on and on but when I went to get a complaints form from the rep another two holidaymakers were queuing for the same. Enough said!

I have a week booked in July in Turkey with Portlands and am looking forward to it, every tour operator can get it wrong I just hope they put this one right for others.
