My/Our Holiday Review:

First of all I have to say Algeciras is not a touristic resort but gives you a chance to see real Spain.

The hotel is beautiful but some of the rooms need to be upgrade, it´s perfect for resting.

But what makes the hotel special is the staff, specially great bar staff and the entertainer juan, friendly and enjoyable, great entertainment progranm as well.

We will go back again next year!

My/Our Holiday Review:

with only 1 flight a week from Manchester, my wife and the kids (2 boy's aged 4 and 6), were not expecting alot of British at the hotel and we were correct.

The hotel is made up of Spanish and German visitors. Situated on the fine white sandy beach it offers a relaxing holiday whilst offering the children plenty to do during the day and evening.

The rooms (family) had a bedroom coupled with a main living area where the sofas pulled into beds for the children. They offer ample room and the room experience was better then we'd expected. Safe, mini bar and balcony with sea views are on offer in ALL rooms.

The swimming pools were great, (2 of them) although if i was to be picky, i'd say they about 1 foot too deep. The children couldn't stand up in the pools, the upside was they both came home as good swimmers, esp my 4 year old.

There's enough sunbeds around the pool and although there was a certain amount of early birds claiming beds before 09.00 hrs, there was never a situation where they wasn't enough beds to go around.

The entertainment for the children (4 - 16 years) is excellent throuthout the day and the shows of an evening kept eveyone entertained. I've got to add that StarFriends 2006, (the hotel entertainment team of about 10 people) were the best i've come across.

The food was good, again better then i'd expected, with a choice of 4 meats and 2 fish every afternoon and evening, a range of salads and cold meats, plenty of cheese, puddings and starters.

The service in the restaurant is excellent and i was pleased the hotel upheld the rule of "trousers for dinner" plus no football shirts to be seen anywhere.

The reception staf where very helpful as was our Thomas Cook representative, (Andrea).

Trips away from the resort, i reccomend the Tangiers trip, however it is not suitable for young children, our 4 year old only just managed it. The Cadiz, Jerez and Porto Real trip is excellent and suitable for young children, however the Saville trip isn't, id recommend hiring a car and doing the drive to Saville yourself, it's only about 90 minutes and the roads are very easy,

The hotel itself is about 300 mts from the commercial centre of Novo Sancti Petri. Itb does offer some shopping, a few bars and a few restaurants, but with mainland Spain the service is often Manana and this is even more so in Andalucia, so a lenghty wait for service if your eating out can be expected, (which is not great if you have young family).

On that i'd recommend the "All Inclusive" option, which my wife and I went for, eat as much, drink as much and the kids, well it was just up thier street, however living on Ice Cream and Fanta maybe isn't the best diet, but on holiday, if they're happy then everyones happy.

All in all, this is an outstanding hotel, well placed, offered everything we required, exceeded our expectations, the kids loved it and so did we.

Thanks IberoStar, StarFriends 2006 and Thomas Cook, it was a cracker.

My/Our Holiday Review:

We booked this at the last minute for my wife's birthday.

A very good resort. There are not any tacky shops not too many loud Brits. This resort mainly attracts the Spanish and Germans. The beaches are some of the best I have ever seen with 8km of them.

The commercial centre has a few shops and a handful of bars/restaurants. all are very good serving cheap drink and excellent food.

The hotel is large but doesn't feel like it. The staff are always smiling and friendly. The food is top class with a different selection every night.

I would recommend Costa De La Luz if you want a quiet relaxing, sunny holiday.

My/Our Holiday Opinion:

Did a brave thing and got a flight from stansted (very cheap) to Jerez. Then Taxi to San Santi Petri appartments after booking direct (via family who live in Spain). No travel agents involved and you can do it easily (and cheaper)!!

The resort is very spanish and English is not generally spoken although you can usually get yourself understood with a phrase book and some miming!! Resort is wonderful, low key entertainment but enough to do for a couple and beach is wonderful too. Sea was warm in October and lots of room on beech. Weather too was excellent not too hot but sunny. Some cloud and rain but only occassional.

The apartments were very good, larget clean and fully equiped. A supermarket in the local commercial centre helped for Milk, cereals etc for breakfast. Resturants for eating our were quite traditionally spanish. Food good but rather pricey (I think). Cadiz is only 30 mins away and beautiful City. Generally overall a good place to go for a very inexpensive and rather upmarket holiday.

Would definitatly go again and would definitely by pass holiday companies. With the cheap flights you can now get its easy to book a flight and accomodation on line!!

The resort was quiet in May but the hotel was excellent. Staff very friendly although not many could speak any English.

Rooms in annex were quiet small but with a large balcony and exceptionally clean.

Pool area was very pleasant with many flowers.

Food and dining room were excellent.

I would recommend the hotel for a quiet restful holiday. Not suitable for small children.

Excursion to Saville was poor value for money.

Opinion submitted in Oct 2005 by : Phil & Patricia Parry - Warrington (50s)

Resort Rating: Very Good

Accommodation Rating: Below Average

My/Our Holiday Review:

For us this was a very different holiday. We were interested in finding a place without too many Brits, somewhere where we could experience local life. Well, Chipiona is certainly that! It's definitely a resort run by the Spanish for the Spanish (with just a smattering of Brits, Germans, Belgians and French). We were cross with ourselves not to have been more prepared with the language - particularly for ordering food in the local restaurants (of which there is a good selection). But necessity is the mother of invention, as they say, and by the end of the week we'd lost our shyness about ordering, and were becoming quite adventurous. We love the idea most restaurants have of offering portions in increasing sizes, from tapas to ½ portions to full portions, and priced accordingly. A good way of sampling a variety of dishes. Wonderful selection of freshly caught fish, prawns etc. If you're feeling flush there's a pricey, but very nice restaurant on the front called 'Pena'. And there's fresh fruit to die for in the local supermarket at bargain prices.

The weather coming straight off the Atlantic meant that although the temps could reach the mid to late 20s it didn't feel uncomfortable. The resort itself is clean with a long, well maintained beach, and its location meant that we could take advantage of some excellent guided tours to Jerez, Cadiz and Seville.

BUT oh dear, the food in the hotel! If only we had booked somewhere else. Breakfast was a miserable occasion with an accompanying din of the staff clattering around with the dishes and constantly loading and unloading the dishwasher - yes, right in the room where we were breakfasting!

And as for the evening meal - it made Faulty Towers look like a 5 star hotel. Vegetables straight from the cans and barely warmed up, dubious meat and far from fresh fish, all usually covered by some mysterious thick, and mostly yellow, sauce. And just plonked in front of you on a plate like a school dinner. All the Brits in the hotel felt the same about the food, and complained but without any results. We gave the evening meal the benefit of the doubt for the first three days, but ate out subsequently, even though we had paid for half board. When you find yourself dreading the hotel food in the evening it's a poor do!

And on the whole the hotel itself I wouldn't recommend. It had a tired feel about it, which is such a shame as its location and size must have meant that in its prime it would have been one of the best hotels in the town.

We felt the Thomson Holidays rep had too big an area to cover to be able to offer much in the way of immediate help, and the times of his availability clashed with ours in terms of excursions - midday isn't a good time to find holidaymakers around, surely.

My/Our Holiday Review:

We booked this holiday direct, the first Hotel we checked in at was a disaster, so we changed to the Playaballena, it was fabulous we went with my son and his wife, we given a choice of rooms and opted for two by the pool. 8 foot wide bed (two doubles pushed together) made for a very luxorious sleeping arangement, spotlessly clean, but then so is the whole resort. Lovely big spacious bathroom, plenty of wardrobe space.

The pool area was beautiful outside jacuzzi's and very attractive pool. with pool bar. There was also a chaded area under palm trees for those who dont like the full sun. There was also an inside spa area, which my son and wife visited for only 15 euros per person, it had everything to make you feel pampered.

The food in the restaurant was excellent, we were half board, needless to say we all added half a stone in one week!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It is not a benidorm or malaga type resort, very quiet with beautiful beach, and although the locals dont speak english much they try really hard.

My/Our Holiday Review:

Overall this was a lovely holiday , which my family thoroughly enjoyed.

We stayed for just one week at the El Rampido apartments ( all inclusive) and were very impressed by them. When we arrived the Hotel had upgraded us( 1 bed apart to a 2 bed apart)as we had apparently arrived out of season. We found the apartments to be very clean with the linen changed every day, beds made too. Good sized bedrooms ( one with ensuite) and living area with an exceptional view over the ajoining golf course and to the country side. Air con in the apartment which supplied the two bedrooms as well. Small kitchenette area with untensils for S/C but we were staying all inclusive so this didn't matter. One note tho there was no kettle in the apartment so if you like your early morning cuppa then i would advise you to take one.

Being out of season we had to eat at the Hotel next door which was a very short walk, and was lovely. The only downside were the toasters, very slow at cooking apart from that the food was lovely and a very good range. My 9yo Daughter did struggle a little to find things to eat but generally the choice was varied.

Three pool areas to choose from all were really nice , if not cold, but once you were in they were ok. My daughter is not the best of swimmers and she struggled as there were no shallow ends to any of the pools as they were all the same depth all the way round also the edges of the pools were really rough and both myself and my daughter both grazed our fingers and hands holding onto the side. There were two small pools for very small children but nothing inbetween. A small playground was also provided and they had a fairly large room for the kids club but my daughter only spent 1 morning in there as she was to busy playing in the pool so cannot really comment on it.

I was a little let down by the snack bars tho...very under staffed and had to wait nearly every time we placed an order. A lot of people complained bitterly about this but generally the food was the standard stuff burgers, hot dogs, chips and Ice Cream.

The village of El Ramipdo is small and has a smattering of Restuarants, there is an English couple who run a Sports Cafe ( has Sky,the apartmens and hotel don't) who are lovely and we certainly enjoyed our afternnoon in there while watching Derby County win there play off final.

The nature trail is a nice walk if you need to get out and about and the walk to El Rampido itself is only about 15-20 minutes. The Noddy train takes you to the ferry port ( so you can go to the beach) about every hour apart fron siesta time.

Overall a really nice place , very quiet and perfect for relaxing.

My/Our Holiday Opinion:

We really enjoyed our stay at the the marismas club apartment hotel in el rompido, we spent 7 nights there which is about the right amount of time, if your thinking of going for 14 nights with young kids it may be a bit of a strain.

The room was very clean and the only bug bear was "no kettle" but we managed to make a brew with a pan instead! Though we had the 1 bedroom apartment and if you go for the 2 bed you get a kettle and a microwave oven. You may be wondering why these items are so important, but when you have a 5 month old baby with you you need them for sterilising bottles and warming up baby food etc.

There were many families with young children aged between 1 and 9 which is perfect as there is a kids club, play area and childrens pool all of which are great, but i would think older kids would get bored easiliy.

We went all inclusive which we strongly recommend as the food is great, very tasty and is cooked and presented well, and so are the drinks and ice creams. But the only draw back at mealtimes is variety and can seem like "groundhog day", i recommend the green beans, they are fantastic, cooked in garlic with panchetta bacon mmmmmmmhhh yum yum, i am now going to do this back home instead of the normal boiling them in water and having them rub and squeek on your teeth! Anyway try em!

There is a beach about 2 miles away and you get on a little train and then a boat, if you go "take a packed lunch and plenty of water" this is a must as you are isolated on an island with no amenities, but the beach great.

All in all i would recommend going to this hotel and i am sure i would go back again, maybe next time i will play golf on the excellent course of the sister hotel next door.

By the way, the staff are friendly most speak english and if you don't speak any spanish yourself, you'll pick up some phrases, i did!

Adios

I booked my holiday and then read reviews on this site i was a bit worried ,but overall our holiday was great the resort is in a very quiet location and most of the holiday makers were spanish ,the hotel itself was really nice ,very clean and very well looked after ,the food was excellent but not much on offer for kids who are fussy eaters,we were all inclusive and im glad we were the drinks were expencive to buy ,the beach is worth the trip on the shuttle train ,we used the train a lot to ride into el rompido town quite often, its a very small town with hardly any shops but it does have a small beach and harbour which was very nice .

The staff at the hotel were mostly nice and did try to speak english or find someone that could .

The kids club was a big let down the staff didnt do anything with the kids and they were left to go in and out all the time ,the same staff were totally different at night and were great with the kids my younger ones loved the kids disco and the staff worked really hard to entertain them .

The night time entertainment was pretty good most of the time .

So if you want a quiet holiday to relax by the pool this is the one ,overall i would vote this resort as excellent

My/Our Holiday Review:

We spent a week all inclusive at the Marismas Club Resort - El Rompido and had a wonderful stress free holiday.

It was the first time we had gone all-inclusive and I would not go back simply due to the ease of it.

The restaurant was large and clean with ample high chairs. I thought the food was good but I am a fussy eater, my husband thought it was great!. Breakfast was the usual, cereal, toast (which you had to wait to cook and usually burn in the toast maker), yoghurt, fruit and bacon although not quiet English bacon!. They had beans and cheese also which on most days made up beans on toast for my 3 year old and myself!. Drinks included the usual coffee and juice and there were packets of chocolate milkshake that I was able to make up for my 3 year old.

There was never a rush to finish breakfast to get to the pool as this did not open until 11:00 although we were never out before this time. When we did get to the pool area, we was amazed each day by the choice of sunbeds available the majority with shade which was great especially with a 10mth old. On the latter part of the week a film crew was at the hotel filming a Spanish comedy and although there were many spectators, there was still beds available (although I must add that we were out of school holidays at the beginning of July).

The snack bars by the pool were good serving water, beer and toasties with chips and ice cream throughout the day except when the main restaurant was open!.

Lunch was in the same restaurant with bottles of wine available, some people filled glasses up but we found it easier to grab a bottle of wine or water for the table (not sure if this was allowed!). Food was salad, some cooked and plenty of cheese bread and fruit.

We thought dinner would be a problem as the restaurant did not open until 20:00, but our 3 year old had a siesta and lasted until dinner then the children's entertainment at 21:00 which consisted of face painting and the same Spanish and a few party songs each evening.

Dinner was similar to lunch with fresh cooked meat each evening and pasta, bread, chips and fruit etc. There was never a separate children's menu, but always something to find for them.

The entertainment afterwards was not up to much but this was not a problem for us as we had young children but could be for some expecting a livelier evening!.

The kids club in the day was good, security would be a problem if leaving children as there was no sign in/out book. The staff were more than happy for parents to stay and play, there was a trampoline and plenty of colouring activities on offer. The Spanish staff were great with kids and very touch feely, you can sense they love working with the children.

There is an Italian restaurant (a snack bar that turns into a restaurant) that you are allowed to spend an evening at which was a lovely change - the service and food was great so worth remembering.

There was more Spanish than English guests at the hotel but this was a breath of fresh air especially as the world cup was on at the time of our visit hence there was no rowdiness - the exception to this was that perhaps the Spanish children had their face painted first and the adults were usually first to be served as most were not all inclusive and therefore paying at the bar.

The hotel offers a free train to the local resort and beach with is a great trip for kids, you can get tickets from reception that allow you a free boat ride to the beach - this is quiet with not much shade and no toilets. The boat and train run ever half hour with the exception of siesta time and the hotel can provide a lunch box free of charge upon request.

The hotel supermarket was rubbish and overpriced but that probably helped as we didn't spend a penny all holiday except the hire of the safety deposit box and cot.

The all-inclusive bar was until 11:00 but you could stock if you wanted to stay up and measures were large.

Overall, a quiet resort, OK entertainment but would definitely give 5*s for a relaxing holiday and would recommend to others.

We have just spent 2 weeks all inclusive at this hotel and would definately go back there again. It's a very quiet, laid back hotel which suits us but if you like busy lively resorts you would hate it. The hotel is spotless, cleaners came in every day and even folded my kids pj's up! The pools were clean and at no point were the kids out of their depth. This has to be the only hotel I have been to where you can go out at 11am and get a sunbed and umbrella.

The kids club was good, trampoline, ball pit etc and the reps were fantastic and worked really hard. They spoke English and all the kids loved them. You can use the facilities of the hotel next door (gym, jacuzzi etc). The resort itself is very remote but you can have day trips by coach or hire a car if you choose. The food was nice and varied and there was plenty of it but if you have fussy toddlers it wouldn't be ideal.

The only down side was the evening entertainment, it was pretty dire but the kids loved their disco. If you want a quiet 'chav free' holiday then book this hotel, if not then go to Benidorm.

My/Our Holiday Review:

If your idea of a holiday is to sit by the pool and have a drink or two this Hotel is ideal for that. The hotel is clean and the rooms are very clean and tidy. The maids did a very good job in cleaning and changing the rooms on a daily basis. The golf course next the hotel is excellent and was very reasonable priced. The area is very very quite and there is nothing to do apart from the 20 minute walk into the village where you will find a hand full of restaurants and a couple of shops. None of the restaurants/bars have sky televison so if you want to watch any thing on the television forget it unless you want German or Spanish programs in your room or the usual CNN Sky News Or German Eurosport. The Hotel has many nationalities staying at the hotel (French Spanish Portugese German English)

The all Inclusive option on the hotel is good but instead of the usual wrist band you had to give your room number every time and this was very slow especially at the evening bar when thay only had one person behind the Bar. All credit to the hotel as the week went on we were seeing more and more staff but as on a school report B+ but could do better. The food was generally good and was buffet style all the time Breakfast Lunch and Dinner. A week stay and chips were available only twice in the restaurant but available in the snack bar daily. All inclusive was available only up to 11 o'clock and the rush to get your last drink was sometimes a stampede. The bar closed at 12 and you had to pay from 11 till then. We were asked to leave the bar area at 12 because the staff wanted to go home so we went out to the pool table area with our drinks. The pool table's took two one euro coins but these were hard to come by as all bars and reception kept on running out. At some points there were none in the hotel??

The entertainment was adequate but not special and the 3 in house entertainment team done well but could be improved with more live acts. The pool was near enough the same depth all round and the kids pool was very small. The sun shades were only on one side of the pool with all the showers on the other. There were enough sun beds to go round and there was no 7am rush to get your sunbed. The pool was not open until 11 but I was asured this will change throughout the season. Be aware of the golf course sprinklers as they some times come on while you are laying by the pool and you can get soaked.

My/Our Holiday Review:

It was with some trepidation that we went here! The place ticked all the right boxes from reading brochures/looking at the SETHotels website but when I read the reviews I have to say I was a little worried!

We always stay at 4* hotels/apartments and have high expectations. Last year we stayed at 2 RIUs in Spain and I wasn't epecting the same level of style at the Marismas - and nor should I have as it would have cost at least 50% more at a RIU.

Don't expect to be greeted with champagne or to have your cases taken to your room. However, do expect a fantastic location - if you like scenery, peace and quiet. The grounds around the hotel, the private drive up to it, the golf course and views over to the estuary are stunning. The next hotel (Furte) is about a mile away and can just about be seen from the hotel. This really is the real spain. In the village itself, most of the tourists are Spanish. We were on half board so didn't eat in El Rompido but there were 5 or 6 clean looking restaurants there which I would happily have eaten at. There's nothing in the village itself other than a couple of small supermarkets, pharmacy and bars - don't expect nightlife.

The ferry to the beach is fun - the beach is ok, windy, wavy sea which shelves quite quickly and a vast long beach. I have to say that is was quiet but not the best I've seen on the Costa de la Luz - the beach at Chiclana near Cadiz is way better.

The sports facilities - paddle tennis, football, basketball, tennis are excellent. They are about a kilometre away from the hotel but the road train stops there every half an hour so if you don't have a car, getting to them is no problem. However, a car is pretty essential unless you want to go no further than the hotel or village.

The food was good - not excellent but there was always something that we could all enjoy. There was the usual array of salads, choice of three or four main courses and grilled meat/fish.

Some reports have said that the meat was raw! I have to say that some of the meat at the cooking stations was not cooked enough for me but the chefs were always quite happy to cook the meat longer - so undercooked eat was really not a problem!

We had a two bedroom apartment - two large bedrooms, one ensuite bathroom and small shower bathroom - also a separate kitchen. The apartment was great - best we've had anywhere and extremely clean.

The only thing that let the place down a bit for us was the public areas and bars - they were funcational - a couple of pool tables, table tennis and large sofas, not particularly welcoming or inviting. Also, some of he furniture was starting to look a bit worn. However, anything they lacked was made up for by the helpful staff, fantastic views and great swimming pools - which were at times devoid of people even in July at 11am! This really is an incredibly quiet resort - probably about 20% English at the most - lots of Spanish, Dutch and some Germans.

The hotel El Rompido next door is very nice and we used their swimming pool several days - I'm sure this was ok! Again, very quiet, with hardly any English people. The snack bar here was very good and food/drink could be put on the room number at the apartments to settle up at the end of the holiday.

There were hourly activities for adults and older children - archery, darts, riffle shooting, aerobics etc but there were very low key and you had to search them out!

So, would we go there again? Yes - if we wanted a quiet holiday in a fantastic location with great views across the golf course and open countryside. Don't expect anything luxurious, or to have to get dressed up in the evening but if you want a quiet holiday with very good apartment accommodation and pretty good food, then go!

Do not go to this hotel if you have children, although the accomadation and swimming pool are good, there is very little else to keep the kids occupied, inspite of the very good facilities in the kids club you will find that the very young staff have little interest in occuping the kids and none of them spoke any english,we soon realised that if our kids where in there then we had to be also.

The staff at the snack bars also spoke very little english and where very slow to serve us, even when there was no queue, also a lot of the all inclusive snacks which where on the menu would not available.

The food in the main restaurant was poor it seemed to be the same everyday, and more often than not under cooked,

The sports activity for the kids football archery rifle shooting tennis ect we where told where not suitable for children under 11

As for the night time entertainment, this had to be the poorest, i have ever seen,it consisted of the same young kids from the kids club dancing about a bit on stage, the following night a couple of pensioners, would sing spanish folk songs.

There is very little to do outside of the hotel, the journey to the beach consisted of a twenty min train ride followed by a boat ride and along walk to get to the beach, which as beaches was not that special

The best day out we had there, was at the aqua park which you need a car or taxi to get to,

Overall it was not a holiday to remember.

Be warned if you are thinking of booking a holiday there, THINK AGAIN,if you have already paid , good luck

My/Our Holiday Review:

After returning from a 2 week holiday at the Marismas we had a really relaxing and enjoyable holiday.

The accomodation is spotless and large, cleaned daily.

We found the food to be really good lots of choice covering everyone`s tastes, got to go to the italian restaurant once a week on all inclusive and that was excellent food and made a nice change.

The evening entertainment was different most nights with a kids disco every night we stayed in the other bar most nights as found that to be a nice place to have drink and relax with friends.

My son visited the kids club a few times there is lots to do in there but found the staff didn`t speak very good english so they concentrated more on the spanish children that were there, but it wasn`t a problem as he found lots of other things to do like swim all day in the fantastic swimming pools there, they are spotless and clean and well maintained.

We had such a great holiday that we have already booked to go back next year, the only thing I would say on a down point is that there is not much there for older children i.e teenagers, think that they could get a bit bored.

My/Our Holiday Review:

The accomodation in this hotel could not be faulted it was clean, modern and well equipped.

That was the only good part of the holiday. We knew the resort was likely to be quiet but thought that there would be plenty going on in the hotel...WRONG! There was absolutely nothing for our 13 year old to do... she was too young for the quad bikes and far too old for the mini disco on an evening..Talking of the mini disco this was the same night after night and the only entertainment that was on before 11pm when the all-inclusive hours ran out!

The food in the buffet restaurant was diabolical, it was cold, sometimes more or less raw and you ended up with a weird concoction on your plate just to find something you could eat. The snack bars kept running out of food and water and if you go all-inclusive you will find that there are snacks, ice-lollies and food in the once a week a la carte restaurant that are not available to you.

The bar staff seemed resentful that we were all-inlcusive, no cheery hellos, please or thank yous.(bars very understaffed too)

All in all it was the worst holiday we have ever had and I would not recommend this holiday to anyone. It is a new hotel to First Choice and it is not up to their usual standard, don't think they will be using it for long - didn't see many happy faces there!

My/Our Holiday Review:

The Marismas Club aparthotel is adjacent to the 5 star El rompido Golf, both hotels are reached by a private road and completey isolated. There is a fantastic golf course that surrounds both hotels and most rooms have great views of this.

A shuttle train runs free of charge to the local fishing village/beach. The village has lots of resturants and only 2 small supermarkets and one cash point machine, which is next to the last supermarket at the end of the main street.(not easy to find as the train drops you off at the other end where you get on the boat to go to the beach)

There is a lot of building work in and around the village. This resort is typically spainish with very few people speaking english, great if you want a bit of culture and a relaxing away from it all holiday.

Both hotels are furnished to a very high standard and as they are only just over a year old are not showing wear and tear. All areas including the pools were kept clean.

Most first choice guests are on an All Inclusive option which allows you to use all the facilities at the 5 star El Rompido Golf. They nclude spa, gym, and beauty room (we used the spa and gym which were great, and without additional charge)

There is a very well equipped kids club adjacent to the swimming pool, this is run by the hotel. Our 5 year old used this several times however please be warned that despite having to sign the children in and out, the kids club reps did not supervise the children and she came out of the club on her own twice!- fortunately we were close by. It didn't help that none of the reps spoke english (they only conveniently spoke it when they wanted to close) Many of the sporting activities listed on the board at reception didnt take place, numerous occasions my 11 yaer old along with other children turned up at the meeting place however no reps turned up for the activity, when they asked at the reception the staff just shrugged their shoulders as did the reps in the kids club.

There was the usual average holiday entertainment starting with a kids disco at 21.30.

All Inclusive Food

Whilst this was in abundance, the variety was limited (during our weeks stay the menu was repeated severall times.)Chips where served in the resturant every lunchtime and dinnertime!! with no potato/pasta alternative. Please check that meat/fish on the griddle were cooked properly often these were raw inside.

Overall holiday commets- This hotel is ideal if you want 1 weeks'get away from it all' ralaxing holiday with clean new modern facilities.Guests we spoke to who were there for 2 weeks were bored with the food and resort. Take you spanish frase book you will need it!

My/Our Holiday Review:

Couldn't fault the accommodation or resort for cleanliness or facilities .... However, be prepared that it is a holiday resort for the Spanish and no-one speaks english.

The rooms were very large, we had two double bedrooms, en-suite, family bathroom, kitchen and lounge/diner with balcony looking over the 18th hole of the resorts golf course. All decorated very contemporary and very clean. Air conditioning as well.

The food was mainly buffet style and was varied. The entertainment was basic but something to go to as there is nothing else around the area. The childrens disco started between 21:30 and 22:00 each night and all entertainment ended around midnight. The lounge/bar area would be closed around an hour after that.

The pools were lovely and seemed to be checked very regularly - at siesta time the resort emptied and for just over two hours you could hear a pin drop and almost have the place to yourselves - actually quite nice and relaxing.

The local beach can be reached by taking a 'train' from reception to the estuary and then a boat across to the beach (running every half hour - except between 15:00 and 17:00 (siesta)). Be warned though, the beach has no toilet facilities, no shade, no refreshments - just a beach - if you miss the 14:30 boat trip back you will be there until 17:30 (not good if your children need the toilet !!!)

As stated before, a lovely resort for relaxing and chlling out - but take your Spanish phrase book with you !!! I would expect this resort to really take off in a couple of years time as there was a lot of building/development in the nearby town/beach.

My/Our Holiday Review:

We made a late booking for our first holiday in the Algarve,we flew to Faro and were met by a car which took us to the resort in Spain, surprise. The Hotel was nice,it was clean, but the aircon was never adequete, and as a previous reviewer said, it was full of Spanish families and their small children. So the pool was always full of small childen, the restaurant was open between 7:30 - 10:30pm but if you didn't go in early, there were queues, this was the same at breakfast and the noise in the Restauarnt when full was not a pleasant enviroment to sit and enjoy a meal.

Isla Canela has a very long beach, but the part opposite our hotel was spoilt by seaweed that clung to the waters edge.

There are a few bars/restaurants along the sea front, most with satelite TV's playing music, but other than the Hotels entertainment, there is nothing at all, not even a souvenir shop to browse in.

It's the type of place Grandparents would feel happy to take the grandkids to,as long as they were young.

But we would not return.

My/Our Holiday Review:

We have just returned from a 2 week holiday at the Barcelo, Isla Canela. The hotel, it's food and staff are excellent. We booked through Airtours Prestige brochure - Adult Focus holiday, but found the hotel full of children. It is very much a hotel used by young Spanish families. As we had gone for a stress free chilling holiday we did find children at all meal times crying, running round the pool and staying on the dance floor till gone midnight rather annoying.

Our fist few days the weather was very cool and windy, we struggled to find anywhere to go/do as the resosort is very limited. Isla Canela has a beautiful clean beach, but nothing else. You can walk to the Isla Canela marina in about 1 hour, there you will find a few English bars and a couple of shops. You can walk over the bridge to the real Spanish fishing village and bars.

A taxi to Ayamonte was 8 euros, worth a morning visit to shop and walk round the old town. Everything closes down at 1pm for siesta for about 3 hours. From Ayamonte you can get a ferry to Vila Real, Portugal, for about 1.5 euros. Lots of small shops and squares to walk round.

We went to Seville for a day which was excellent. We booked through an independent tour operator in the marina, Isla Canella, a coach picked us up from our hotel at 8:20am and returned us back at 6pm for 28 euros each. There was no tour guide in Saville which suited us. For 40 euors we had an hour's horse and carriage ride which took us through parks and sites we would have not seen walking in the time we had there.

Whilst we enjoyed most of our holiday, we will not go to Isla Canela again, as in 2 weeks you have seen it all!!

Second of 4 hotels we went to over a 16 day period (others Falesia,Nautico Gale,Almansor) see other reviews.

On approach this hotel is amazing it looks like something from fairy land with its pool and fountains and just over the road from the beach.

Don't know if we were unlucky but our room was dull and hot, aircon on all the time not effective at all.Bathroom was a bit clumsy with a bidet in the way of the bath/shower.

70 per cent Spanish 20 per cent German so the food reflected this but a good selection of meats etc

Sorry everyone but we just did not feel comfortable there and was glad to get back to Portugal for the rest of our tour

Good luck to Mario at JA's bar a Romanian saving to return to his family working 7 days a week.

I can only confirm much of the content of previous reports. The resort was very quiet, when we went during October half-term it was virtually closed.

There is a great deal of development going on but it all looks in keeping with the area and didn't cause us any problem.

Golfers - there is a great course nearby with green fee at 45 euros. The hotel will pay for a cab there and back - recommended.

Seville - presently a building site with the new tram system going in but still worth a visit,

Hotel - the hotel was closing down around us, less and less staff each day, no one cleaned the pool or looked after the outside areas. A general feeling of tiredness. Felt like we were extras in The Shining! But the food was OK and they serve bottled wines from the wine list as part of the AI. My main gripe is with the tour company and having to pay peak rates when the place is closing the day we leave!

I would go to the resort again but stay at the Riu Atlantico.

My/Our Holiday Review:

Firstly do not confuse this hotel with 4* hotels in England as in my opinion it is only 3*.

I have mixed feelings about our 2 weeks at the Hotel Iberostar. The weather was great as was the beach (all 7km of it) but beware on strong tides all sorts of sewage etc came ashore along with some pretty weird jelly fish.

Although many have complimented the food here we found it poor. For example first night "Steamed potatoes" were available..mmm yummy..basically raw cold chunks of spud. Breakfast next morning mmm steamed potatoes were served again, actually the same ones,,no thanks. That night steamed potatoes with paprika sprinkled on them..get my drift. The freshly cooked items like the carvery etc were nice but many items were either over or under cooked many of which in the trays were cold. Plus hands up who likes last nights sprouts, soggy broccolli, green beans or cauliflower for BREAKFAST!!. Usual weird fatty boney bacon, rubber eggs, cold baked beans and sausage, that I have never tasted the like before, was normal fare in the mornings. I could ramble on forever about the food but it was not to our taste -sorry. One funny thing though the very second you ate the last mouthful off your plate a waitress grabbed it away from you. Plus if you wanted a drink with your meal at night it was quite expensive unless you were on all inclusive. No coffee etc was available in the dining room in the evening. Seemed to me conveyor belt stuff..in, feed ,out.

For a 3 year old Hotel it was quite run down and it looked like if anything went wrong it was either bodged back together or ignored. The lights in the corridor outside our room were not working when we arrived or by the time we left despite many complaints to reception. In order to open the room at night we relied on our mobile phone light..not really 4* quality is it. The stench of sewage in the area and the room was overpowering at times, it seemed the air conditioning brought it in but generally the awful smell was everywhere. The solution from the hotel was to put bleach down the toilet..did not work. If we had a long shower in the nice roomy bathroom, the metal plate by the toilet flooded the room and I dread to think what was in that water.

The tiny ants infested the wardrobe and even the mini fridge and as the Hotel is built by swamp land the mosquitoes were unbelievable. My wife and son in particular were bitten so much they were covered in lumps and rashes but by the sights at the poolside we were not alone. At night for us it was immpossible to go out to the pool bar or the walk way at the back of the hotel as we were constantly bitten by mozzies. Not so bad during the day, only the wasps and flies bothered us then.

Nightly entertainment was 45 minutes in a sauna known as the show room mainly by the in-house team but a couple of nights by professional troupes such as Flamenco dancers who were superb. This ended between 10.45pm and 11.00 pm after which it was mozzie pool bar or bed. You would not believe how many went to bed by 11.00pm. Bars were shut by midnight anyway. Daytime animation teams were good with various kiddies clubs and archery, shooting, water polo, volleyball and beach football being the main attractions.

A good pool but even though there were a lot of sunbeds, the towels were going out by 7am so get up early for a good spot.

The gym was downright dangerous from my point of view, with no aircon, no water and broken equipment plus it was unsupervised and any child could have walked in and hurt themselves. The indoor pool was only open on 2 days out of our 14 (technical reasons???).

We were lucky and had a car so trips out were the order of the day for us. Seville on a Sunday was a great trip out about 140k each way. La Rabida the monastery where Columbus lived for many years was superb. Cartaya had a good go-kart track and a slightly run down waterpark next door. We found Ayamonte pleasant and very Spanish which we really liked although the Saturday market was.. well poor.

Canela was very quiet with a few restaurants, bars and a supermarket in the marina but mainly the area was a fishing village and they were very active early morning.

Nicest thing about the area is that it is a yob free zone and very safe to walk around at night..mozzies apart. The place is in the middle of massive building projects . From the walkway behind the Hotel I saw over 12 giant cranes, at least 4 part built hotels and one that was a shell and had been for a few years was next door but one. That said, even though the builders started about 7am where our room was, we heard very little noise etc from the sites.

All inclusive at the hotel was by wrist bands and there was a good selection of drinks available so if you want to spend 2 weeks by the pool you would get value for money but if you want to travel around maybe half board would be a better option.

I can only relay our experience at this hotel and resort and must say Andalusia has great potential with many interesting places out and about and a good road structure. If all those shells of hotels turn into cheap self catering apartments and the tone is lowered it will be a shame so if you want total peace and quiet, nice multi national easy going people and be in bed by midnight this is for you. Bring loads of insect repellent, get a car and go native and you will get the best out the place. Sorry about this novel length review but it is how we saw it.

My/Our Holiday Review:

My husband and I stayed at the Iberostar Isla Canela for 1 week. The hotel was generally excellent, clean comfortable air conditioned rooms with wonderful power showers in the roomy bathroom. The food in the hotel was the best we have experienced for a long time in Europe with freshly cooked whole salmons, fabulaous freshly roasted pork, fresh grilled steaks, and a great selection of all foods. The only problem being there was no access to have a coffee after a meal except by venturing to the entertainment bar. But be warned do not bother with the coffees at the pool bar if you are half board and not all inclusive. They are nearly 2 euros and are given in a tiny plastic cup, obviously used for all inclusive guests !

The first 4 days of our holiday were heaven, relaxed and quiet and then there came the Spanish Invasion !!

We appreciate that the Spanish want their holidays too but their consideration of other guests is nearly non existent, children out of control, and plenty of shouting and screaming although the hotel is quiet at night.

The staff at the hotel are brilliant and helpful and the entertainment staff give it their all. We were disappointed as there was very little to do in the vicinity of the hotel and there were very few shops and restaurants open and this was in late May. It is a good 10 - 15 minute walk to the nearest local mini market, but if you go past this shop and walk to the small bay the Bella Napoli restaurant is well run and very pleasant to sit and have lunch overlooking the bay.

Our highlight tripo was to Ayamonte, a 10 minute air conditioned bus ride from outside the hotel. Beautiful Spanish feel with quaint restaurants, shops and squares to sit and people watch.

We even ventured to the local market on the Friday but be sure to catch the bus to the Bus Station otherwise a quite long walk is needed to get to the market. The market is an experience, especially if oyu buy shoes because you have to find the other shoe yourself from the hundreds on a large table !!!

The hotel was really lovely especially if it was situated in Ayamonte then it could have been a perfect holiday - but be sure to check when the Spanish Invasions are expected !!!!

My/Our Holiday Review:

Arrived back 8 October after one week.

We have stayed at several Iberostar Hotels recently and have more booked for next year. All aspects of the holiday deserve 9 out of 10 including food drink and the excellent staff.

Having said that we were disappointed that first of all this is not a 4 star hotel! Perhaps 3 star plus albeit with 4 star service.

Sadly there were two matters not reported in the brochure!

1. This time of year the area is plagued with mosquitos. The area around the hotel is very marshy and even the locals are bitten. I'm not the kind of person who usually suffers from mozzie bites but this year I am covered in them. This I can forgive as its outside the control of humans but you should be aware of it.

2. This brings me to my only other gripe and one for which I can find no excuse whatsoever. ENTERTAINMENT. There was very little and what was offered was quite frankly abysmal. The excuse given by the hotel is that they are winding down to closure at the end of the month and the hotel is not full so they have not kept on enough entertainment staff to put on the usually excellent full shows. OK that would be acceptable IFFFFF firstly the brochure mentioned this which it doesn't and secondly if we had paid substantially less than we would have done in September which of course we didn't!!!!

All in all this was a good break spoilt only by the feeling of being cheated out of any reasonable entertainment. In view of the fact we stayed all inclusive we had to go out in the eveneings to find any kind of entertainment and of course pay further for the privilege.

If you like only mixing with British people on holiday, English food and English music, this is probably not your idea of a good time.

First time I ever felt the need to put pen to paper and express opinion about a holiday.

Stayed at the Iborstar Isla Canela Hotel June 2005.

First opinion on arrival how happy and helpful the reception staff were

Lovely sea view rooms, rooms very clean and spacious.

Outside two pools for adults one for children

Inside lovely pool with well equipped

Gym if your that way inclined when the temprature outside is touching 30c

The resturant was a "proper" resturant not a canteen, and the selection of food? what can I say! it was fantastic

We went half board but after the first day opted for the All Inclusive option. What a wise decision! Normally on all inclusive the choice is limited to local wines and beers, Not here! you could have any internationl brand. There were six choices of Sangria and three Champagnes alone

First hotel we have been to, and we have been to lot, were you can get a sunbed anytime of the day and any location.

The beach is on the doorstep miles and miles of golden clean sand. Do not expect to snorkel in the sea, this is the Ocean and if surfing or diving through waves is your bag then this is paradise.

A finally word about the entertainment team. young boys and girls clearly enjoying there job, never pushy but persuasive enough to make you feel your missing something if you do not join in some of the activites

If you want English food, bingo,The Red Lion Pub,Football shirts and happy hours don't bother

If you want lovely hotel, mix with the locals, peace and quiet this for you

We will certainly be going back

this was a excellent hotel, the staff work very hard to ensure you have anything you require.

Food was varied (LOTS OF CHOICE)very good, wine also available with the lunch, and evening meals, water, fizzy drinks, excellent cappacinos. We went all inclusive well worth it!You will find you dont need much in the way of euros, when they say all inclusive it sure was!

A good hotel for relaxing, out of season, not too busy, the animation team work very hard to entertain the guests, but dont pester you if you dont want to join in.We had a trip by taxi into ayamonte, and spent a couple of hours looking round the shops, its a busy spanish town, had a coffee. Its worth the visit, you can also go by bus.The local marine is well worth a walk to its very pretty, only 2 bars open, and a mini market, well stocked. This was all 10 minutes away from the hotel,a very pleasant walk down the promenade.weather very good in the high 70s better than in England at this time of the year!We did get brown!Pack the suntan cream.

All in all a very good value for money hotel, with excellent facilities, swimming pools, gym, bars, shows.one of the best, cheapest holidays we have enjoyed. We transfered from the airport by,Via direct, this was also an excellent service, all in all a very good holiday!

Excellent hotel, ideal for people looking for something quieter and more European in focus. All-inclusive deal was fantastic value. Food was excellent, widest variety I've come across in a European hotel. Booked through medhotels.com and arranged separate flights ourselves. Excellent value for money. Majority of other guests were Spanish, staff were excellent and the whole place was very "family friendly".

Point to note: as most other guests Spanish, meal times are a bit later than I was used to, but enjoyed every meal.

Good bus service into nearest town.

Will be back at this hotel.

My/Our Holiday Review:

Booked this thro' teletext & got a bargain paid £319 each incl transfers. Thomas Cook wanted over £600 for the same holiday.

The resort is very quiet and tranquil with just a few bars in the marina area. The beach is clean and very quiet with a couple of spots to rent sunloungers. Apart from that the beach is sparsely populated and goes on for miles. The sea is clean but there is seaweed in the water and judging by the number of locals fishing there is plenty of fish. This is a resort for chilling out and is not at all suitable for those wanting to party or bring children as there are simply no amenities/entertainments for them.

The hotel is still new and is in good "nick" with excellent facilities and is decorated in a Moorish theme. The gym is quite well equipped. The pools are a sensible depth and there was no shortage of sunloungers or pads for them, although they did seen a little crowded together.

The food is good and the service in the restaurant is excellent, although the buffet servery area is a bit of a circus, as always in holiday hotels. The entertainment in the evenings was standard hotel ent team fare. We were a little disappointed with the room, whilst it came with en-suite, air con, Tv and a fridge, it was a little small and did not quite exude that 4* "plush" that other hotels have. The balcony was small and had thick pillars which blocked the sun for most of the day.

One area that this hotel certainly needs to improve is it's maintenance. The dial for the aircon broke off and after reporting the problem 3 times and 3 attempts to fix it we ended up with the dial glued onto the control unit with the temperature stuck glued on it's coldest setting which meant that we either were very cold or very hot in the room. We also had ants in the room but a quick blast from a can of ant killer sorted that.

Despite the minor maintenance niggles we had a wonderful holiday and would certainly return to this hotel. If you want to see pictures of the resort do a google search on "isla canela .com". 2 sites will appear in blue at the top of the page one (medhotels?) shows the hotel and the other (some site selling property) has excellent gallery and panoramic picture pages.

If you like a lively holiday this resort is not for you. There are only a couple of small mini-marts and a few cafes and bars which are about fifteen-twenty minuts walk from hotel.

This hotel is four star and well worthy of it. I cannot fault anything about it. The rooms are clean the food is excellent and the staff are very friendly and helpful.

Because this hotel is in a new resort the people don't speak very good English, but its easy to get by. The beach is fantastic and sun beds can be hired for 6 euros per day (two sunbeds and umbrella)

This resort is fantastic if you want a quiet and relaxed holiday, allthough I must say we had fantastic weather perhaps if it had been rainy I may have had a different view on the place. I think in a few years time this resort may be spoilt so take my advice and pay it a visit now.

My/Our Holiday Opinion:

Firstly, Orchid Travel were fantastic. Never had such a professional Sales Agent! As with the other feedback this place is QUITE. However, you can see that this resort is a different class. All 4* hotels and a new 5* being built. Everything else is apartments and they are quite exquiste. Looks like a very well to do Spanish resort.

Only critisms would be the rooms that they offered first, took 3 attempts to be given a good room. The first offering was at the back overlooking scrub land and on the bottom floor. Eventually we got there though. Then the food, not what we would class as 4* but then everyone has different tastes.

The beach is huge! We opted for the beach a few days to get some space around us as by the pool you were a bit too close.

There is nothing to do at this place and the nearest town Ayamonte is about 20 mins away. There are only two shops in the whole resort of Isla Canela. We needed this as it made us relax and enjoy doing nothing. Next time we need a holiday to do nothing we'll come here again definately. Enjoy.

My/Our Holiday Review:

Isla Canela is a beautiful place. The Hotel was magnificent and deserved it's 4 star rating. Comos had not booked the correct accomodtaion for us, however after a bit of haggling with the Desk Staff and presenting them with our booking form, they did provide us with what we had booked which was a two bedroomed self catering apartment.

Self Catering apartments "they aint". The facilities I thought were poor, no kettle, toaster, very small pots and interesetingly we only had two cups, two bowels etc. We had to go half board, which really we had to do. That put additional considerable cost on to our holiday. Isla Canela is a developing touisrt location. Much of the infrastructure that a tourist location needs is just not established yet. However, A short bus trip will take you into the local town, where ther are supermarkets etc, Bus service not brillant though, and the town is closed Sat. pm and all day Sunday. As mentioned before the Hotel is beautiful, and the entertainment team are excellent. The professional shows are very well done. However, the CATS tribute was truly the funniest thing I had ever seen ( there is something about lycra, that always lowers the tone!!)

Kids of all ages are very well catered for there is always something going on to keep them entertained.

Food was ok, lovely wine list to choose, and dinning staff and chefs very accomodating and friendly. Bar staff abit unfriendly and miserable though.

Down sides ( sorry there are some) The state of the toilets on occasions were appaling. There were clearly a lot of tummy bugs, which I unfortunatley caught also. I also had money and my bank cash card stolen from my room, and I do not think I was the only person there that happened to, as a similar situatuion seemed to take place the night before in a room located along from ours. Staff were fantastic however, and very fast to sort the situation out. Next day I recieved two baskets of fruit and lovely bottled water.

Finnally, this resort would not suit you if you like to be with large amonunts of other British people. This is a Spanish hotel and is visited mainly by the Spanish, there were sprinkings of other nationalities , however, not many. Also to get about and vist places you need to hire a car. Hope this helps!

this up and coming resort is the ideal place to come to relax. the whether is perfect as is the beach with plenty of beach bars and resturants to visit, the nearby town of ayamonte has lots of shops bars and resturants.although very spanish it has changed from our first visit in november 2003 when we were pushed to find any english speakers now down on playa canela not far from the marina we found a number of bars and resturants with friendley english speaking staff.at one end we found a large supermarket and 3 spanish bars next to a very popular fish market/resturant as u walk down you will come 2 a selection of resturants/bars ja;s bar is very english and freindly jackie and alan and staff will be happy to help and also will be on hand should you need a lift to get around or you may prefer to hire a car or bike ,a vist to the chinese is recommended and portions are ample.if you prefer pizza take a walk further down and visit the new pizza/ice cream parlour or why not enjoy a meal and drink listening to music at the music bar on the beach.

over all this resort is changing with every visit you just have to venture and sample to get a true idea of the resort. so you can visit the marina, punta del moral, playa canela,or if you fancy a drive why not spend the evening in ayamonte.or have a shopping day out to huelva or if you fancy a venture further try seville.to some up new resort just getting started changing with each visit strongley recommend a vistit.if you want noise reps bar crawls stay away if you want peace and quiet shopping and miles of unspoilt spain then visit

Excellent Hotel.

Champagne on arrival, very courteous and friendly staff, very clean room with good facilities. We stayed for 2 weeks from 27th July to 10th August. First week was perfect. Just the right amount of guests (The Spanish Football team Deportivo were staying there also).

Second week the hotel seemed to be full to capacity and there was not enought sunbeds for the number of guests and the pool became rather crowded. I know you expect this to sonme extend at high season, but for a 4 star Riu hotel we expected better. Hotel rules state that there should be no reserving of sunbeds but folk were going down at 7 in the morning and doing just that! We were not impressed with the Rep as we feel she did not give enough info about the trips etc (just the good points!). For eg. we booked the trip to Seville which and she said we would visit the Cathedral and the Royal Palaces, we presumed this would be included in the rather high price (£54 euros ea) but on arriving at the city we were told there were entrance fees of 7.50 euros and 8 euros respectively. She also omitted to mention that Seville reaches soaring temperatures of upto 50 degrees! It was a beautiful city with lots to see - but be warned it's HOT.

Isla Canela is a very quiet resort with only a handful of bars and a couple of shops. Not really enough for 2 weeks. Beach is gorgeous - sandy and vast but the sea is rather murky and not up to the standard of the Med. We think the hotel would be a good choice for 1 week early or late in the season if you just want a quiet restful time.

Read previous reports and began to think we would be bored - not a bit! Hotel sat between entrance to Marina and promenade with walkways leading to the sands.

Hotel superb with large room, friendly and efficient staff, In fact they couldn't do enough for you. We invited 4 friends to dinner one evening to celebrate 2 anniversaries and 2 birthdays. The table decoration was magnificent and included free sparkling wine and water. Most impressive and not over-expensive for the extra meals.

Our holidays consist of doing things in a morning, and returning to sunbeds around 2pm to chill out. Plenty to occupy us, visit to Ayamonte via free hotel shuttle bus. Beautiful town with shaded squares to sit and people watch, good shops etc. Also go by ferry to Villa Reale in Portugal which has good shopping and lovely promenade and squares to sit.

Visited Seville- super day out, but don't bother with the river cruise, and the Columbus trail which goes to monestary and to replicas of his 3 ships, a most interesting trip. Don't book with Thomson Holidays as they are overpriced. Shop by the marina much cheaper and they collect you at the hotel.

Food quality is as expected at Riu hotels, excellent with so much choice both at breakfast and dinner. Two sittings for dinner, choice is yours to have during your stay. Table also allocated at dinner for your stay.

Hotel surroundings quite spectacular and kept immaculately clean. No need to reserve sunbeds, mattresses or shades as plenty available all day. Spacious grounds to sunbathe or sit quietly.

Walk along the promenade and beach to the other nearby resort is most enjoyable.

While we were there lots of dead jellyfish on the sands, but cleared up each morning by beach patrols who clean each day, so no problem.

A super little resort with marina and genuine fishing area. Go before it gets built up as it will fairly soon.

My/Our Holiday Review:

I found this hotel in the Thomson Holidays Platinum brochure but decided to book it DIY when Thomson Holidays only had pool view rooms left therefore wanted a huge increase in price. I booked the flights with Jet2.com and the hotel direct on its' own website with a total saving of £400 on Thomson Holidays s' brochure price!

We then arranged for taxi transfers at a very reasonable rate with resort hoppa who were waiting for us on arrival so all in all, got a great bargain. We were a little apprehensive after reading some of the reviews about the resort being really quiet but on arrival, were extremely pleased at our first impressions of the hotel. We were greeted with champagne and orange juice for our son and our bags were immediately taken to our room. Evening meal was soon to be served so we went for a quick look at our room. We'd not paid the extra supplement for a sea view but our room was on the first floor and had views of both the sea and estuary!

The hotel is excellent - staff will go out of their way to make your stay as pleasant as possible. There is so much choice for both breakfast and evening meal that even the most fussy of eaters will be able to find something that they like. There was always sunbeds available - none of the ritual of laying of towels that is so common in many hotels. The beach is a dream - loads of white sand and uncrowded. The only downside is the jellyfish and seaweed.

The entertainment team work hard but the best shows tended to be when outside acts were broght in. They had a tribute night to the Platters which was really good but some of the other nights were a bit naff.

The resort is quiet and I wouldn't recommend it for two weeks unless you really want to do nothing. There are only a couple of bars and three small shops. A little train runs the length of the resort and by the end of the week we were on first name terms with the driver!

If you just want to walk after your evening meal and then return to the hotel, then this is the place for you - we'll definitely return for another week but two weeks would be too long for us.

Just returned from a fantastic holiday at the Riu Atlantico. The hotel just cannot be faulted, we had 2 lovely, 24hr air conditioned, huge, double rooms with full sea views (which we didn't pay extra for!) The food was really the best we have ever had, with just so much choice (even fresh smoothies at breakfast). The staff were extremely friendly and helpful at all times.

The animation team were great for our 2 children, not really my cup of tea though! Entertainment in the evenings was OK, we have had a lot worse!! The resort of Isla Canela is made up mainly of apartments where the spanish take their holidays, there are about 5 bars/rest's round the harbour, which suited us for an evening drink, there are no tacky shops or pubs.

All in all we had a fabulous time, I wouldn't recommend the Hotel for anyone without children (at least not in Jul/Aug) as it was extremely busy and could be quite noisy, but having said that, outside of the school holidays I am pretty sure it would be a lot quieter. 100% recommended.

When we first stepped in the Atlantico we couldn't believe our eyes! The reception area is beautiful. We were then quickly checked in and offered a free glass of chamapagne its all extremely posh!

The meals there are fantastic! There is something for even the fussiest eater! The waiters there are so attentive in fact all of the staff there were excellent and so friendly. The maids were also brilliant the rooms were always spotless!

The pool is massive easily enough room for all of the guests that were there we had absolutely no problems getting a sunbed.

The indoor pool is also lovely but we didnt go in there - we couldn't miss out on that lovely weather!! The gym was also very good however saw no point in it after scoffing so much food at dinner!

The beach was nice, at the end of the beach that the the hotel was it was really quiet! The sea was pretty full of sea weed but once you'd ventured in a bit it was pretty clear! But watch out for jelly fish there was quite a lot!

The room was very clean, there was of plenty of room for the both of us and we could see the sea from our balcony!!!

The resort is VERY quiet a handful of bars, about 2 shops! You can see it all in 2 minutes! But still its great for one week if you're just looking to relax a little!

All I want to do is to pick up this hotel and pop it in a more lively resort! Everything in the hotel went perfectly!

We had been recommended to this hotel and it was fab. We were allocated 3 rooms on the 3rd floor all with a a sea-view room which were quiet. Fod excellent always a good choice. It was great not having to get up early to grab a sunbed as there were plenty.

Entertainment team did a wonderful job in keeping everyone amused with games during the day and shows at night. I agree with other comments Rep not good and contradicted herself on several occasions. The weather was hot and sunny, pool is a bit of a challenge as it's freezing.

Although there isn't that much to do anyone going for a relaxing holiday (like us) that's exactly what you will get. Don't go if you want loads of nightlife. Brill holiday we would go back tomorrow!

My/Our Holiday Review:

Just returned from 2nd visit to this resort but first to this hotel. (Last year we stayed at Riu Canela). My daughter and I simply wanted a week in the sun and we certainly got that! Tremendous temps - hottest summer on record. The hotel is FABULOUS and I agree with most of other comments on this site - excellent staff, lovely pool and surrounding area, no sun bed hoggers, really good selection of food etc. I must add that our room was unusually large and similar to an American hotel room - best I've ever had in a Spanish hotel. Air conditioning (100% necessary) available 24 hours and with a celing fan fitted, we were often cold in the evening and had to switch one of them off! The hotel entertainers were friendly and it was the usual bog standard stuff. Pleasant enough to pass an hour in the evening. We chose the 9pm evening meal (I feel the reception staff may give English the 7pm automatically until they say something different but absolutely no problem changing and I feel you could possibly change for occasional nights as well) and we were always able to get a table in the bar/entertainment room in the evening. One complaint - nowhere else to get a drink apart from this. They could do with a 'quiet' bar, where you could just sit to have a coffee after the meal.

Hotel provide a free return bus service several times a day to Ayamonte and this is a pleasant enough little town with the ferry to Portugal available.

I agree with other comments regarding the Thomson Holidays Rep - are any of them really interested if you don't book trips with them? I doubt it somehow! And why a farewell meeting, it meant having to get dry and drag myself away from pool, to be told info that would be best put on a piece of paper or noticeboard! Or would this not be possible cos she gives out duff info!! Like a previous writer, we were told no possibility of keeping room on but that this would not be a problem and the hotel provided 'loads' of courtesy rooms and the longest we'd have to wait was 10 minutes! We were leaving hotel at 5.50pm and went up to reception at about 4.30pm thinking this allowed plenty of time. Somebody already using the ONE room available, 2 waiting! We eventually got out of courtesy room at 5.30pm and had a big panic then sorting our things out and getting them out of secure room! God knows what happened to anyone after us! Needless so say, rep had already left on an earlier coach....

And now to the resort........Hotel very impressive and has a lovely approach from the road. Surrounding apartments appear to all be up-market and the small marina is very nicely done but really there's nothing there! Where do all the people from apartments and yachts go to eat and shop? There's literally 1 small supermaket, 2/3 'tat' shops and about 3 bars - and absolutely nothing else! You can walk around it in 5 minutes. Having said that if you accept this, there's no lager louts, its very safe and friendly, lovely pavements and well lit. It suited us for a week but I think you'd be stir crazy after 2 weeks! We had lunch each day at the Outback and a delight it was too! The Jeremy Clarkson look alike (but with a missing tooth!) is very attentive and amusing.

So to summarise! If you want a week in the sun, in a fabulous hotel, great food, good service, pleasant surroundings etc. and don't mind there being nothing much to do outside this environment, then this is for you! I'd definitely come back.

My/Our Holiday Review:

Just returned from 2 weeks at the riu atlantico which was 5 days too many. The surrounding area is still being developed with very little to do or see. The nearest town (Ayamonte) was being ripped apart with new streets etc so little to see or do there without a jack hammer pounding in your ear.

The hotel itself is very welcoming and the staff quite attentive ringing up to see if you like the room etc. The food was in our opinion very good and varied, even fussy eaters will find something they like to eat.

Downside :- carpets in the rooms grubby and stained, dim lighting in the room, tv had english channels but were stuck on BBC Wales & BBC 2 Wales (very good for the 3 people from wales). When I mentioned it to the rep she said no you've got BBC1, 2,3 and 4 try going through the channels (like i'm an idiot who hadn't thought of checking all the channels) she didn't get it changed . Periodically you would get a sewage smell in the room. Also the fishing boats start going out at about 5am in the morning so light sleepers need not apply.

Our curtains did not fully shut so i was awoken with a laser beam of sunlight every morning. All very minor items but added to the desolate nature of the resort made one feel like you were suffering rather than enjoying your holiday.

The rep who had dreams of being promoted to long haul on the back of her sterling service, NOT! gave out negative or erroneous information. At the goodbye meeting she said the hotel is fully booked this weekend so you cannot keep your rooms, imagine my amazement when having packed our cases and vacated the room i was stood next to someone who says can i keep the room till 5.30, answer certainly sir but there will be a charge of 30 euros, i would have kept mine if i had had the right info.

The one thing she did tell us was that they were charging for excess baggage at Faro and they were. People were being hit right left and center for sums of up to 150 euros for excess baggage, this was after the bags had disappeared down the shute so little chance of getting them back and removing any surplus cheap heavy items. They were charging 7.5 euros per kilo. People were swearing that their cases were lighter not heavier going home, the check in staff were saying its Brittania making us charge, the reps were saying its the airports policy. What a way to end a holiday. They didn't offer the two old dears who could hardly have had 5 kilos of luggage between them any money back though.

Positives:- food good, no sunbed booking except selfish idiots who towel them up and disappear for the day, otherwise plenty of sunbeds. Lovely weather with a good breeze most of the day, quite relaxing atmosphere.

My/Our Holiday Review:

We went to this resort on recommendation for the hotel. The Hotel fairly good, very impressive building and decor inside. We had quite a large room with air conditioning and a large fan above the bed. The carpet in the bedroom could have done with being cleaned (stained) and their were tiles off the wall, also a burn in carpet made by an iron (which concerned me in case they thought we did it). Our balcony looked out onto the water where the fishing boats came and went which was ok during day but woke me up at 4 a.m. because of their engine noise.

The food in the hotel was plentiful, varied and well presented although being asked to eat dinner at 9 p.m. was not acceptable and we had to complain to get a change of time to 7 p.m. There were parents with children who checked in with us and were asked to eat dinner at 9 p.m. I found the starters and puddings very good but the main courses could be a bit greasy. For breakfast there were lots of choices of cereals, grains, breads, cheese, meat, fruit jams, butters, teas although I found tea bags to make ordinary tea vile (I bought Tetley tea bags in mini market)The entertainment in the Hotel was poor and the entertainment team we found to be not very good at their jobs did not have the skills to encourage guests to join in the activities. The exception to this was the girl who ran the kids club she appeared to be very good with the children.

The resort was the most boring resort I have ever been to. It has very impressive hotels and apartments (most which were empty) lovely landscaping and very clean. You could walk through the resort and not meet a soul or see a car on the road.

There was no Spanish culture it has been totally built for tourists like a big estate with very few facilities.

There was a marina area with a couple of small shops, couple bars and restaurants and a mini market (if you have babies no nappies to be had in resort you have to take bus or taxi to Ayamonte).

Overall the staff in the Hotel were friendly helpful and curteous. The Thomson Holidays s rep. was average had not been there long.

We found the monotomy too much and took a bus to Portugal (where we usually go on holiday) and spent a few days in a Hotel there in Armacao de Pera which is not a busy resort but 100% more attractive than Isla Canela in our opinion.

We will not be re-visiting Costa de la Luz.

Have just got back from a lovely week in Isla Canela. Hotel staff were excellent and very freindly. Room was spotless and big. The variety of food was very good and scrumptious. The entertainment was acceptable. Grounds and pool were very pretty, clean and tranquil.

The resort area is very quiet with a lovely beach / marina. There is some buildings going up but we were not affected by it at the Atlantico. We did use the free bus to the nearest town of Ayemonte on a few days for shopping. Try the pub 'Sugar Reef' for lunch and evening drinks. The english family who have the pub were very freindly. It is also situated where you can watch the boats/fisherman coming out of the marina, a 3 minute walk from hotel.

I would certainly recommend this hotel if you are looking for a quiet resort and lovely beach. There is also a golf course in the resort. (We are not golfers!! )

Wow - this is a proper luxury hotel - fridge bar and 24hour air conditioning with champagne on arrival. The staff could not have been more helpful. They spoke excellent English which was a pity as I am Scottish!

The seafood was out of this world but I have had better food in an Ibiza 3 star hotel. Nevertheless the variety was tremendous. The service was excellent even down to the bar staff.

The entertainment I found disappointing. I found that the entertainments officer 's idea of entertainment was to mime and dance to some records.Nothing original. The flamenco dancers were all right but I do not really appreciate Spanish dancing. The Tom Jones tribute singer was OK but I must say that I expected a bit higher standard of entertainment from a hotel so good otherwise.

The hotel supplied a free bus into Ayamonte which was appreciated but not by the residents who were left when too many people tried to return!Portugal is just a Euro and 10 cents away from Ayamonte by ferry and provided a splendid diversion for the day. Seville was tremendous even though the bus tour guide didn't know when to stop talking. She did not appear to be offended when she was interrupted by the snores of the passengers! It was well worth the money to visit the cathedral and Royal Palace.

The Oz bar is worth a visit to get some decent beer. I am afraid that Cruzcampo beer is not within my tolerance levels. This hotel was a trip of a lfetime for us and was well worth the money, even though it is a wee bit isolated .The weather was tremendous - burnt in 1 day.

We did not rate her one little bit.

If you go to seville don,t go with Thomson Holidays s , the tour guide went on and on about nothing. The driver could not drive ,had no regard for speed ramps. But seville is worth a vist. The hoptel food and accom was good , hotel overall very impressive. There is the ozzy outback bar near the marina, great for a hot beef sarnie,a cool beer &live footy.

My/Our Holiday Review:

This was by far the very best and most relaxing holiday we have had. The hotel is superb and the reception area is magnificent.

We arrived late and were the only couple on the air conditioned people carrier which picked us up from the airport. We were very impressed by the welcome given to us on our arrival. All the staff were very friendly through out our holiday and nothing was too much trouble.

The food was outstanding and Maria who looked after the seating area in which we were allocated on the first night could not have been nicer. Our room was excellent and had a balcony which overlooked the pool and the sea great views and was just perfect. The entertainment team were great and very professional in their approach to the guests and were not overpowering. (I particularly liked the water aerobics and now attend classes at my local baths). It was nice to read Debora's (lead entertainer)comments this to us shows the level of T.L.C. shown by the staff and would like to say thank you and see you next year. The evening entertainment was enjoyable and relaxed.

The beach was a one minute walk away and uncrowded and superb, but be mindful of the seaweed which is scooped up every morning. The loungers by the pool were plentiful and changing your towels at the poolside could not have been easier and emphasised the high standards of cleanliness throughout the hotel. The walk along the promenade outside the hotel was very pleasant and led to the harbour. If you want to unwind, relax, de-stress, do nothing this is the place for you. There are no shops other than a couple of supermarkets and bars. Ayomonte town is a short bus/taxi ride away and worth a visit and from there you can get a ferry (5mins crossing) into Portugal for traditional shops.

We will definatley be going back and cannot wait.
