Costa Brava Smaller Resorts (A-Z) Barcelona - Costa Brava (see Rest of World Europe fore more on Barcelona) Hotel Aspis Arenea - Barcelona Opinion submitted in Sept 2004 by : Gary & Carole - Tyneside (49, 47) Resort Rating: Excellent Accommodation Rating: Excellent My/Our Holiday Review: Stayed four nights whilst we explored Barcelona. Booked independently via internet with no problems encountered. Hotel situated 20 minutes walk from Placa Catalunya,5 minutes walk from Familia Segrada with frequent buses and metros running nearby. Hotel, which in our opinion exceeded it's 3* rating was immaculate with rooms serviced daily. Buffet style breakfast with good selection of hot and cold, pastries, fruit etc. An ideal base in a quiet area from which to explore a very interesting, vibrant city. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hotel Caledonian - Barcelonia - Costa Brava Operator and Date: (Thomson Holidays
Opinion submitted in Dec 2005 by : Ray & Ann Bossom - Cambridge (60,67,) Resort Rating: Very Good Accommodation Rating: Good My/Our Holiday Review: This Hotel is about 10 mins walk to Las Ramblas. The hotel is very clean, breakfast adequate though not always a hot selection available. The Bar- Cafe was unattended during our stay and it seemed to only be opened at the whim of the receptionists. During 2005 the building adjacent to the hotel has been demollished leaving only the front facade and rebuilding is underway. The building the other side is undergoing renovation. Fortunatly we arrived Friday lunchtime so no noise over the weekend but the noise started on the Monday morning although this was not too annoying as we were out most of the day. We returned home Tuesday after a short city break. We found Las Ramblas fascinating, human statues stalls, artists, beware pickpockets. The cathedral is well worth a visit as it is incredible. The tourist buses give a good overall insight to Barcelona. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hisperia Sant Joan Suites - Barcelona Operator and Date: Expedia September 2005 Opinion submitted in Oct 2005 by : Tina and Peter 56,57 Resort Rating: Excellent Accommodation Rating: Excellent My/Our Holiday Review: The hotel is very clean and staff very helpful, although we asked for a kettle and twice were given a saucepan, mmm. Unfortunately the hotel is a long way out from the town and the big downside was it was an hours crowded bus ride into the centre (and back) and although only 1.15 euros each (cheaper if you get a weeks ticket) it does mean you waste two hours a day traveling. Barcelona is fantastic, wear comfortable walking shoes as its hard on your feet. If you've a head for hieghts there are numerous monuments to go UP to see the city from on high. Gaudi is everywhere and is a must if you have the time. The sea trip round the port and coast we thought was a let down as there was no commentry. Advice would be to get a bus map from information on Las Ramblas it saves on walking to the bus stop that you know when theres a closer one round the corner. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hotel H10 Raco Del Pi - Barcelona Operator and Date: Hotels by Phone - 2006 Opinion submitted in February 2007 by : Alan Barbara Marshall Maureen 63 63 62 60 Resort Rating: Excellent Accommodation Rating: Excellent My/Our Holiday Review: Hotel first class. Excellent poistion for sight seeing. Favourite restaurant - Cuisine Nitz. at Pl.Reial off The Rambla you will probably have to queue for 8.30pm opening but believe me its worth the wait for food/price/location. A must is taking the Official tour bus Red/Blue/Green routes very reasonable and you can get off and on when you want over two days for only 23euro, together with commentary in English. The bus takes in all major attractions throughout the city. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hotel H10 Raco Del Pi - Barcelona Operator and Date: on-line - November 2004 Opinion submitted in June 2005 by : Anne & Rob - Lancashire (52,52) Resort Rating: Excellent Accommodation Rating: Very Good My/Our Holiday Review: Three night short break - flights and accommodation booked on-line all without a hitch. Barcelona is a brilliant destination - lots to see and do. The H10 Raco Del Pi is very good, clean, very helpful staff. Its right in the heart of the gothic quarter just a few minutes off Las Ramblas. Good choice for breakfast - hot, cold, fresh fruit, pastries you name it - the only down side is no restaurant so you have to dine out in the evening, not really a problem though there's plenty of choice in Barcelona. Do buy the ticket for the tourist bus - there's a lot to see and its very good value. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sagrada Familia 1 - Barcelona Operator and Date: gobcn-april 2007 Opinion submitted in April 2007 by : frances hardwidge 57 Resort Rating: Excellent Accommodation Rating: Poor My/Our Holiday Review: Barcelona is a brilliant place,. our apartment was changed when we got there and the one that was the replacement was so filthy we couldn't stay in it. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Cadaques - Costa Brava Hotel Playa Sol - Cadaques Operator and Date: Direct (www playasol com) - 3rd May 2004 Opinion submitted in May 2004 by : Patrick & Philippa Vickery - Glasgow (38, 32) Resort Rating: Excellent Accommodation Rating: Good My/Our Holiday Review: Cadaques is a beautiful place and you can see why Dali chose to live here. It is more remote than most of the Costa Brava resorts and therefore quieter and more exclusive. This 3 star hotel is a 5 minute stroll away from the main focus of evening eating and drinking but, therefore, has great views back towards the town. We booked directly and paid 150 euros for a double room with balcony and sea & town views including quite a standard breakfast. The room was very clean with a comfy queen size bed and a lovely terrace - however the soundproofing between rooms was not great but this did not affect us as there were only about 20 people in the hotel (May is VERY quiet in this area). We had drinks in the Casino Bar which had a great mix of locals and tourists (only 3 euros for a glass of wine and a beer). Then on for dinner at Els Pescadors. Don't be put off that the restaurants are quiet earlier on as the locals don't do out for dinner until 10pm. We had a great dinner of bread, starters, Valenciano mixed paella, water, wine & coffee - 67 euros for two. Later drinks at L'Hostal on the square where the live jazz is atmospheric. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Calella de Palafrugell - Costa Brava Camping La Siesta - Calella de Palafrugell Operator and Date: siesta holidays-july 2007 Opinion submitted in July 2007 by : lesley frazer-lockerbie (46,42,9,5) Resort Rating: Excellent Accommodation Rating: Excellent My/Our Holiday Review: We travelled to spain in siesta bus we decided to add an extra night and go to euro-disney this only cost us 49pounds extra each which included passes to disney ,hotel acc at the Kyriad and breakfast.Hotel was basic but clean and breakfast was good transfers to disney were good(every 10/15 mins by pink shuttle bus).We felt it was very good value for money and helped break the journey for the kids they were so exsausted after their day at disney they were asleep as we left the carpark and had to be woken at 7.00am in spain for breakfast. We arrived on site at 10oclock to be meet by steve and ann who took our luggage to our accomadation, exec 4 lodge small but perfectly formed and perfect for 4 of us nice and clean.Site was excellant ,lovely bakers and well stocked supermarket, swimming pool was large ,kept very clean lifegaurds on at all times.Take-away chicken from site restaurnt was fantastic.Lubi chinese buffet at gates to site plain but ok.Village of La Franc beautiful and alovely walk on coastal path from calella.Never saw one, all day english breakfast sign in the time we were there This is not blackpool in the sun and i just hope it stays like that beautiful. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Camping La Siesta - Calella de Palafrugell Operator and Date: Camping Life - June 2007 Opinion submitted in July 2007 by : 37,35,11,9,7,5 Resort Rating: Excellent Accommodation Rating: Good My/Our Holiday Review: We stayed in a 2bed cottage style mobile home. We managed but it was a struggle have booked a 3 bed for next year. From speaking to other people on site if you want a 3bed better to book quickly most of the people we met return every year so the larger vans go quickly. The site is great for the children and very family orientated. The childrens club was fab I am not a big fan of kids clubs like to know the kids are safe but Andy was a star.In fact my children were begging to go back and constantly asked if it was time for the kids club yet.The camp site is also ideally situated for the town just a short walk downhill although some people were complaining the walk back up was a slog with a pram. The restaurants overlooking the beach were lovely but very pricey we went for a drink the first night and learned that the hard way however there are lovely restaurants set in the streets further back which are reasonable. We had a fabulous holiday and are returning next year.We did not hire a car as we would have to have a 6 seater and it was too expensive but we managed to get a taxi both ways 100 euros each way.The campsite reception booked the taxi for our return which was a bit worrying as our flight was early and reception was closed so if the taxi did'nt show we were stuffed but there was no problems.I would recommend this site to anyone with a family as it is the most relaxing holiday I have had.The campsite shop is also very reasonably priced for bbq food and the bread at the bakers is fab the q out the door every day backs that up. What more can I say except enjoy --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Camping La Siesta - Calella de Palafrugell Operator and Date: Siesta - August 2005 Opinion submitted in Sept 2005 by : Ashleigh Rawstron, Peter Griffiths, Michelle Smith and Emily Griffiths - Manchester Resort Rating: Excellent Accommodation Rating: Excellent My/Our Holiday Review: Very enjoyable holiday. Campsite is excellent with facilities within minutes. Supermarket bakery and shop very reasonable prices, as was exchange facilities. The shops opened all day. The restaraunts by the pools were good value and also tasty. There are a few phones on site, and if you ring after 7pm 1 euro will last you just under 10 mins. Pool was safe with life guards watching every move, but make sure you get your sunbed at 10am, or you won't get one. Nearby resorts of callela and La Franc about 15 minutes walk away, very unspoilt and picturesque, not commercialised, one of the most beautiful places in Spain. Lots of little beach coves. Make sure you visit Tony's for your evening meal, fantastic food, overlooking the sea, and one of the most reasonable cost wise. Parafrugell, is 10 mins on bus, or 10 euros in taxi, very large square with lots of little bars, mostly spanish people, a definate feeling of being away. Would not recommend this holiday to anyone looking for lots of English bars, as there is none, but if you want to go away, relax and enjoy the spanish culture, it is the place for you. We will most certainly be returning. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Camping La Siesta - Calella de Palafrugell Operator and Date: Costa Brava Direct July 2005 Opinion submitted in July 2005 by : Rymond, Anne & Josh & Liam (both 14) Resort Rating: Excellent Accommodation Rating: Excellent My/Our Holiday Review: Just returned from great holiday. Campsite is immaculate with good security and generally friendly staff. Costa Brava Direct use Redcrest reps who were all very helpful. Static bungalow - very big caravam! - is extemely well equipped with eveything you coud ask for in terms of kitchen equipment etc. It was hot so air conditioning was very welcome. We ate in Callela most nights. It's a beutiful very Spanish little village. Many of the villas and apartments there are owned by wealthy Barcelons residents who use them as holiday houses. Food there is not cheap but of a high standard. All restaurants are busy at wekends and you are best to book. We took the kids scuba diving in Lafranc. I would thoroughly recommend the Triton Dive Centre - absolutely fab staff who were fantastic with the boys. All of them spoke perfect english which - given our shameful lack of Spanish - helped give total confidence. The only complaints we had about the holiday were 1. Don't get the linen and towel package unless you have to! It comes from the campsite not the operators and is a real rip off in comparison to all other equipment. The linen is old - holes in sheets, pillow cases which are made out of old sheets and don't fit pillows. The towel package is a joke - one small, grey, you could spit through it handtowel each and a bath mat! No bath towels at all. We ended up having to buy them on site - only 10 Euros each but having already shelled out £80 a bit disappointing 2. Very early check out. you have to be out by 9am sharp and are expecte to have place all cleaned, fridge defrosted etc by then. Reps arrived bang on 9 to check this out. With kids and the fact that you are in a forrest so pine needles get into everything, this means a very early start which, considering what you are paying is a bit of a stressful end to your holiday. However these are two very minor grumbles and if you want a wonderful, relaxing family holiday with lots to do for the kids but not in some 'Get you English Breakfast Here' hell-hole this is the place for you! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Camping La Siesta - Calella de Palafrugell Operator and Date: Redcrest July 2005 Opinion submitted in July 2005 by : Linda & Dean 42, 41, 22, 18, 15, 14, 11 Resort Rating: Excellent Accommodation Rating: Excellent My/Our Holiday Review: we arranged our own flights to La Siesta but the airport transfers (£21 each )and accommodation were arranged by Redcrest. When we arrived we were met by two taxis (there were 7 of us) and they took us to the camp we were then met by the reps who checked us into our phoenix mobile home. This was very spacious and clean. The reps were very friendly and gave us any advice we required. The camp has everything you could want for all ages, the pools, entertainment, clubs and shops were fantastic and did not try to rip you off. the resort is one of the most beautiful places I have visited in spain not commercialised at all very spainish (you will not find a macdonalds). The big pool club does great food and the service is fast and efficient whether you are eating in or taking food out, make sure you visit the bar between 6 and 7 for happy hour every day. We will definately be going back again. A big thanks to the Redcrest Reps. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Camping La Siesta - Calella de Palafrugell Operator and Date: Homair Vacances- June 2005 Opinion submitted in Feb 2006 by : John Hardy - Wicklow( 32, 34, 2) Resort Rating: Below Average Accommodation Rating: Average My/Our Holiday Review: Stayed in La Siesta with Homair Vacances in June 2005. Found the campsite to be fine. Would certainly not be of the same standard as some of the better french sites found around languedoc in France. The area where Homair have their small mobile homes is next to a fairly busy road and can be quite noisy from early morning to late evening. The mobile homes are fairly well equiped and comfortable but would be smaller than any of the other tour operators on the site. The shop and bakery on the site are excellent as is the larger pool complex. It can be quite difficult to get your bearing on the site as there are 2 pool complexs at opposite ends of the site. Just outside the gates of the campsite at the Calella side, is a firly good all you can Chinese. Other than that there is very little to do in the village of Calella. To be fair it is a beautiful little fishing village but if you have a toddler or are pushing a buggy it is a nightmare as it consists of a maze of step hills. The beach in Calella isn't suitable for children as the sand is too coarse. In fact the beaches in the area although picturesque are too coarse. You need to travel up as far as Estartit before the beaches get anyway decent. As we stayed on the site in early June the full season hadn't kicked in and the evening entertainment was very poor, probaly about twice a week in low season. There is a good supervised kiddies club up at the smaller pool where kids can play either indoors or outdoors. I couldn't recommend staying with Homair. Firstly because no BBQ is supplied and camping isn't camping if you can't BBQ. No charcoal BBQ's are permitted so we were limited to cooking on the gas stove in the mobile or the poolside takeaway of Burger& Chips, Fish and Chips, ChickenBurger & chips, Pizza and Chips, Chicken and chips. The restaurant up at the smaller pool has a better selection but is still very limited. Also we were asked to make sure our mobile was fully cleaned out and left pristine before we departed. I've never stayed anywhere before where I've been asked to clean my own accomodation before departure. While the holiday was enjoyable, we won't be returning to La Siesta again. If I was to return to the Costa Brava on a camping holiday I'd try Castell Montgri in L'Estartit. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Camping La Siesta - Calella de Palafrugell Operator and Date: Redcrest Holidays - June 2005 Opinion submitted in Nov 2005 by : Lynda, Michael, Paul, Beverley & Thomas Clutton - Bolton (53,51,27,25,2 Resort Rating: Excellent Accommodation Rating: Excellent My/Our Holiday Review: Three generations of our family have visited La Siesta over the past 20 years. We have lots of happy memories. This year we stayed in a basic, clean apartment overlooking the pool. Plenty of room for our family of 5, with 3 balconies. The site is a wonderful base to explore this idyllic area of the Costa Brava. We enjoy long walks through the countryside and along the coast. Try a day's walk to Palamos, stopping for a picnic at the Castille beach. The breathtaking scenery is a real tonic. Also walking in the other direction - past Llafranc, climbing up to El Far lighthouse, and on to Tamariu is a wonderful experience. Evenings spent in Calella or Llafranc are wonderful, if you enjoy the typical Catalan way of life. Watch the locals dance the Sardana every Saturday night. Splash out for a special meal at the Sant Roc hotel. (our son proposed to his girlfriend here). The bars and restaurants are reasonably priced, mussels and paella are to die for. Try a "cremat" at Tony's bar. (described in an earlier review.) Visit the shops and market in the pretty town of Palafrugell on a Sunday morning. We are looking forward to our return in 2007. (Going to Sorrento in Italy next year for our son's wedding - hope our review is as good as this one) --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Camping La Siesta - Calella de Palafrugell Operator and Date: Siesta Holidays - June 2005 Opinion submitted in July 2005 by : Neil Roberts - Sheffield (38,40,3) Resort Rating: Excellent Accommodation Rating: Excellent My/Our Holiday Review: This was our 2nd coach holiday to the costa brava the last time was with cantabrica but we chose siesta holidays for our trip to calella de parafrugell this year and what a big improvement on comfort and service. The coach was only a year old so everything was like new and this time around the toilet did not smell and even being next to the food prep area this did not put me off my bacon butties :) as it was kept clean all the time. The drivers were more than friendly and the hostess was allways busy keeping us happy with her not too pricey menue. We reached La siesta campsite at around 1pm and it was damm hot to say the least but we were greated by karen who cheerfully ticked our names of and handed us over to leanne who again was very friendly she took us on a guided tour of the campsite until we reached our accomodation which was more than generous to say the least everything was in top condition and cleaned before our use. Our cases were dropped of by bob who although suffering from a limp and in some pain still managed a big broad smile while lifting my slightly over wieght case :)The other rep who needs a mention was amanda who although new to the site was still keen to get busy with making sure things ran smoothly all the time. The campsite was big and was very clean along with the two pools the lower pool being the bigger and had a water slide and this was overseen by 2 life guards at all times, the top pool was L-shaped and had one life guard and was the quieter of the two. Both pools have take-aways and restuarants and bars next to them and both serverd excellent food at good prices (try the chicken its aswome). The only let down we thought was La Siesta's(Not Siesta reps)own onsite nightly entertainment although there were a few reasonable good nights it was below par effort on there part and we thought it catered more for the spanish than us english (A word of warning on weekends the site and pools can get busy with a spanish invasion but dont let that put you off :)).Because of the lack of decent entertainment onsite we would have a few drinks then head down to the pretty resorts of calella de parafrugell just down the road or Le Franc which also was just a short walk from the campsite both having plenty of bars and places to eat with top notch food to choose from and both resorts are the nicest we have seen in a long time. If your looking for a quiet relaxing campsite with the added choice of two of the nicest resorts also very quietn then this is for you We will deffo return to this campsite and with siesta holidays as we had a great time and the reps Karen,Bob,Amanda,Leanne worked very hard to make it an allround fantastic holiday...... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Camping La Siesta - Calella de Palafrugell Operator and Date: redcrest october 2004 Opinion submitted in Nov 2004 by : diane robinson Resort Rating: Excellent Accommodation Rating: Excellent My/Our Holiday Review: well what can i say....... what an absolutley fantastic holiday! it was my family and i first holiday abroad so we were a little worried about making our way and not knowing what really to expect. on our arrival the redcrest duty rep was excellent she greeted us with a warming smile told us what we needed to fill in and then kindly showed us up to our accommodation which was ammaculate!! the site was beautiful and kept very clean. The weather was really good so we were very lucky and enjoyed most days at the beach on calella or just chilled around the bottom pool complex where the kids could happily play on the slides in the pool. Entertainment on a night wasnt as good as i thought it would be but i suppose with it being low season a lot of the regular entertainment had finished. The redcrest reps put on a wondeful halloween party which they obviously organised extremley well the costumes were really good and a lot of time and effort had been put into this sucsesfull night both kids and adults all participated. Well done to AMY, JANET, IAN AND KAT for making our holiday so enjoyable we know at times how rushed off your feet the reps can be but they still put on a smile for everybody and have time to make sure everyone is ok. Siesta never even did their kids club it was such a shame. The day after my daughter left 2 other families had said my daughter was treated unfairly and one family lived in the opposite caravan lodge to her and said they'd heard no noise. The hotel is clean and its big. Allmost all rooms are on the seesite and that gives a fantastic view! Basic rooms do not have airco unless you have booked a room with airco. In the hotel they ask 10 Euro / night extra for this facility. (Our agency even asked 8.50 euro / person / night for this) Hotel Staff is friendly. Allmost all of the hotelstaff are Polish, Maroc and Russian contractworkers. Only a few Spanish people work there. Food: Importante note here: Its the first time I saw this kind of presentation: When you enter the diningroom you will find a menu on your table. You will see 4 menu options and you need to choose 2 of them and tell it to the waiter. The 'starter' is something you take yourself (not a big choise and allways the same.) The food you have choosen from the menu will be brought to you. But... all portions are amazing small !!!! The presentation is perfect, the quantity is peanuts. In my entire holliday I was hungry when I left the diningroom. I am not such a big persoon but there was no way to take more food then the food that was brought to you on your table. Please take carefully note of this (!!) Only my 55 kg weighting girlfriend did not have hunger anymore. The beach in front of the hotel is small and did not appear very hygienic. Most hotelvisitors skipped it anyway or went to the hotel swimmingpool (nice, and clean) or to the beach in the citycentre (nice long walk) City centre of Playa (platja) de Aro: Perfect new centre with a long and very nice boulevard and the long, long shopping street(s) are definitly worth a visit. My conclusion: I would definitly visit Play the Aro again but not the hotel. Good food is important to me and I like to take it myself as most of all spanish hotels do. Also the long walk to the town or city centre is something you need to take for granded. Well, this was my second review. Till nextg year, I guess! So, instead of heading towards the coast, we thought we would look for a cosier hotel inland - what a find! 3km North signed from the main road through La Bisbal - but not all the way so keep your wits about you! A stunning renovation of an old finca has created a beautiful rural retreat. We went upstairs to the dining room with an open vaulted ceiling and fireplace. The service is discreet and efficient without being intrusive (as is often the case in some of these 'better' hotels) and it appears that the management was Dutch - many Dutch expats seemed to know the manager and each other. The terrace overlooking the valley towars the sea would be a beautiful place to while away a meal when the weather is finer. We had an extremely tasty 3 course menu del dia with nuts, olives, bread, water, bottle of wine and coffees for 50 euros for two - worth every cent! Unfortunately we had a booking elsewhere but, without, question we'll be back. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- L'Escala - Costa Brava Hotel Voramar - L'Escala Operator and Date: Direct (www hotelvoramar com) - 4th May 2004 Opinion submitted in May 2004 by : Patrick & Philippa Vickery - Glasgow (38, 32) Resort Rating: Average Accommodation Rating: Average My/Our Holiday Review: Firstly there is a small resort near here called Empuriabrava - apparently a little Venice ... not!! It is a collection of nouveau riche houses on canals with a splattering of touristy restaurants - best avoided. Instead head to the beautiful walled hamlet of Sant Marti d'Empuries. There are a few restaurants here and we ate in at Can Colli in the sun trap square - bread,4 tapas, water, bottle of wine, 4 coffees for e30 euros. On to L'Escala. On our 7 night trip to the Costa Brava we stayed in 7 different places - and this was the only one to disappoint. The people here were generally very brusque and spoke only Catalan. Our fairly good Spanish was not really understood and no English was spoken in the majority of hotels or restaurants we visited. However there are some good clothes shopping to be had in the old town - especially stylish linens and some of the cheaper designer brands. This 3* hotel was recommended in various guidebooks but, on checking in, it seems that it was just the best of a bad bunch. The hotel was clean but very dated. There was a pool but it was not yet open. May is VERY quiet here - only 6 of us in the hotel. The location was good with views to the sea and on the edge of the old town. However it did only cost 64 euros (including 7% IVA tax) for the night for a double room with balcony and a very average breakfast so can't complain on VFM. Both on the seafront by the old town town beach: We had cocktails in friendly Mocaba (who also serve some good looking Italian food) and then dinner in Dolce Vita. Fantastic pasta and a wonderful buffalo mozzarella pizza but, again, don't bother going out for dinner until 10pm when the locals bring a more Spanish atmosphere to the place. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Llafranc - Costa Brava Hotel Terramar - Llafranc Operator and Date: Direct - 5th May 2004 Opinion submitted in May 2004 by : Patrick & Philippa Vickery - Glasgow (38, 32) Resort Rating: Excellent Accommodation Rating: Very Good My/Our Holiday Review: Llafranc is just such a beautiful place. A small cala/cove more suited to Greece with its layers of white houses tumbling down towards the sea. There are about half a dozen hotels that we saw and about a dozen restaurants - plenty if you enjoy whiling away the hours watching the sea and the people whilst enjoy firsty quality food and drink. We stayed at Hotel Terramar which is on the seafront between the more famous Hotel Llevant & Hotel Llafranch. These are well known for their food so we thought our hotel would be well placed. In fact it is no more than a stones throw from each! The hotel was renovated in 2002 and offers quite a minimalist feel. We paid 80 euros for a very clean room with king size bed, large bathroom and balcony overlooking the beach so that we could fall asleep to the sounds of the waves. But breakfast is not included - an extra 10.50 euros per person (don't bother, get some croissants and sit on the balcony) and neither is parking at any of the hotels as the parking lot is a few minutes stroll at the back of the town. We were the only people staying and there were probably only another 30/40 in the resort itself - VERY quiet in May - mostly in the Hotel Llafranch. We had drinks at the locals bar by the harbour then dinner at Hotel Llafranch. Wonderfully friendly service and a good mixture of tourists and locals. We had bread, water, bottle of wine, amazing starters (crab salad & croquetas de pollo), fabulous main courses (wood smoked lamb & char broiled steak in red wine sauce), liquer & coffee - 100 euros for two. We then followed this by ordering Cremat. This has to be done - a hot earthenware bowl appears from the kitchen with rum, sugar, lemon peel, cinnamon & a secret family ingredient. The dish is then set on fire and stirred until the flames change colouer from blue to orange. Coffee is then added and enjoy - at 14 euros for about 4/6 cups. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Malgrat - Costa Brava Hotel Amaraigua - Malgrat de Mar Operator and Date: Media Travel - July 2007 Opinion submitted in July 2007 by : J Richards - Mansfield 48,14,13 Resort Rating: Excellent Accommodation Rating: Below Average My/Our Holiday Review: This was a last minute booking , I asked for hotel on the beach , all inclusive, in a town and East Midlands departure only. Tour operator was 100% on that score. Ryan Air were brilliant - faultless, the hotel was a disappointment. Our room had four single beds, there were three of us and we were cramped. There was not enough storage space either. Our bathroom was not nice , badly needed an update. I did note that there are some upgraded rooms which are very very nice. When we arrived our bath waste pipe which doubles as the shower one was blocked and remained so for two days. There was no bath plug , and it took three days for them to produce one that actually fitted. The toilet also ceased to function but they did fix that the same day. The food was ok at times , very good on the "Gala Night" , a saturday and pretty yukky in the main. Breakfast never varied , choice of two cereals (I would say Aldi value range far surpasses ), greasy bacon sausage, boiled eggs and beans, sliced meat and varioius white bread. Lunch and dinner were similar meals, always basic salad, lots of fried meat , some fish. They label the dishes with a symbol but veggies beware as there is often meat/fish under a veg sign. I was never sure if the horse sign really meant horse - prefer not to think about it! I have had much better quality food at other 3 star inclusive venues. The hotel reception staff are great , excellent english, bar staff miserable. The cleaners battle against all odds , all day and do a grand job. The pool was fine , never too crowded as access to the beach was right at the side - lovely beach. Entertainment was not particularly inspiring , in one week , two karaoke nights, a reptile show , a parrot show, a poor two lady duo and a couple of uninspiring discos. The gym is really not at all good , two working bikes , one not and two sit up benches , no free weights. There is a working sauna but that whole area around there smells horrible. There is a kids play park , small but looked functional and I can't comment on the kids club. So no sorry , thumbs down on the whole --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hotel Amaraigua - Malgrat de Mar Operator and Date: Fleetway - August 2006 Opinion submitted in September 2006 by : Susan and Ian - Scotland (42 and 39) Resort Rating: Below Average Accommodation Rating: Below Average My/Our Holiday Review: The hotel was not one of the best I have ever been to but certainly not the worst either. It is all inclusive - the food was pretty bad - I am glad I left my son at home because he would not have eaten anything - well apart from the hot dogs through the day. The flight and the transfers were great - no problems at all. Tickets arrived on time - so I cant fault Fleetway at all really. The entertainment was rubbish for adults but if you are taking the kids they will love it. The pool is far too small but you are right next to the beach - so its not too bad. All in all it wasnt the worst holiday I have had - but my partner said he would never go back to Spain it has put him off. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hotel Amaraigua - Malgrat de Mar Operator and Date: Fleetway - August 2006 Opinion submitted in Aug 2006 by : Resort Rating: Average Accommodation Rating: Below Average My/Our Holiday Review: Our flight from Bournemouth was fine - on time and the staff were all very friendly. The transfer was great - we were the only two people to be picked up from the airport at Girona and it only took about 30 minutes to get to the hotel. Upon arrival at the hotel at 9pm the reception staff were very friendly and gave us our room key and told us that if we were hungry the restaurant was open until 9.30pm. We had a good room - it was a family room and had five beds in it and there was only the two of us - so there was no complaints there. The food was pretty awful to be honest - if you like chips (soggy) then you will be fine but the rest of the food was not very good. I have been all inclusive three times before this to three star hotels and this was by far the worst food I have ever come across. If you dont like pork I really dont know what you will eat to be honest. The resort is okay but there just isnt anything to do to be honest. The entertainment is non existent for adults but if you have kids I am sure they would enjoy it. If you are going on holiday with no children though I would definitely not go to this hotel as there were a lot of children there and if you are looking for a relaxing holiday without children then you wont get it. The children were running around at 12 oclock at night with no supervision - so if you were looking for an early night you certainly wouldnt get it. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hotel Amaraigua - Malgrat de Mar Operator and Date: Fleetway Travel October 2005 Opinion submitted in Oct 2005 by : Tina Kevin - Cambs ( 41,41,14,7,5 ) Resort Rating: Poor Accommodation Rating: Poor My/Our Holiday Review: Booked with fleetway travel.Started badly had paid for transfers from airport but these had not been booked for us.Walked into a riot at the hotel reception with complaining guests.Horrified at accomodation and requested a transfer which they were unable to do.Stayed in a family room, big mistake 1 double bed 3 singles crammed into one room. Accomodation absolutely filthy, beds not made or changed all week room not cleaned bins not emptied infestation of ants and we were being bitten badly every night in bed.One small outdoor pool not heated too cold to use.One broken jacuzzi. We went all inclusive food disgusting, repetitive, cheap junk food, had to eat out.Found some nice english bars serving edible food, Legends,Robin hood,Rovers return. The spanish management team were not interested in complaints and were totally indifferent to the problems. No adult entertainment when bar closed at 11.30pm lights were switched off by the staff and you were rudely shooed to your rooms, sad attempt at a mini disco for the kids.It rained which resulted in hotel foyer and restaurant flooding Major health an safety issues, informed staff about live electric plug socket in restaurant with no face plate during flood whilst people were eating and they resolved this by pulling down a blind so it was no longer visible. All the underpasses were flooded so the hotel staff removed a fence panel and suggested you cross over an active railway line so you could reach your pick up point for the airport or put on black dust bin liners and wade through knee high water.Disabled customers were not put on ground floor and refused use of lift on ocassions when it was signed out of order to the guests only to see staff using it without any problems. This was a holiday from hell. Only positive points were catching a train to barcelona for the day it was wonderful and the train service was inexpensive, clean and on time. The second good point was the fact that good old British backbone and grit enabled at least thirty of the fed up residents to have a modicum of unadulterated fun(at their own expese and initiative)much to the annoyance of the bar staff and managent in the opinion of this writer it would be more fun staying in a tent errected on your back lawn --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hotel Amaraigua - Malgrat de Mar Operator and Date: Fleetway Travel - JULY 2005 Opinion submitted in Aug 2005 by : Jessica Shepard - Essex Resort Rating: Below Average Accommodation Rating: Below Average My/Our Holiday Review: HOTEL AMARAIGUA *** MALGRAT DE MAR COSTA BRAVA. We booked our holiday with FLEETWAY TRAVEL on an ALL INCLUSIVE basis which included flights and transfers. We flew with RYANAIR from STANSTED to GIRONA. ROOM 117 The room was very small with walls covered in squashed mosquitos, holes in the curtains and cigarette burns in the bedspread. The wardrobe doors were broken and the wardrobe itself had an aroma that made my clothes smell. The bathroom was so small you could infact use the toilet and wash your hands at the same time. The shower tray/bath had cigarette burns all over it and had been poorly plastered over where hole has occured in the enamal. The shower head was wedged in with a mouldy piece of cloth to hold it in place. The glass in the patio door which lead to the balcony had become seperated from the frame which could be considered dangerous. FOOD: The main meals consited of oddly matching dished such as rabbit, 'pink' chicken and meatballs that could only be described as 'meat' because you could define what meat they were made from. But if you like chips, your ok. The desserts were very limited. A friend in our party chose a peach and discovered halfway through the peach was actually rotting inside. Drinks were ok, very friendly service with quite a large variety. Snacks were a choice of chips, hotdogs or pizza that were cooked by the bar staff in a make shift kitchen behind the pool bar. ENTERTAINMENT: The entertainment was very poor due to lack of equipment but the ent's team were very friendly and helpful. POOL & JACUZZI: The pool was very small considering the size of the hotel but was very clean. The jacuzzi was also clean, just had to wait your turn. SURROUNDING AREA: The hotel is located on the beach which was very poor, the sea becomes very deep all of a sudden and at the time of our stay had waste floating around which included sanitary wear and condoms. To get to the hotel the coach dropped us off at the corner of a main road which then we had to walk under a subway which went under a railway line to reach the hotel. The railway could clearly be heard from the hotel, especially from the guests situated at the front of the hotel. There were plenty of shops, pubs and clubs that surrounded the hotel that could be reached easily. I give this hotel 3/10. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hotel Amaraigua - Malgrat de Mar Operator and Date: Fleetway - July 2005 Opinion submitted in July 2005 by : M Young - Leeds (60, 60, 58, 56, 41, 33, 7, 7, 5 Resort Rating: Good Accommodation Rating: Good My/Our Holiday Review: Just back from a week at this all inclusive hotel having traveled with Fleetway travel via a Jet2 flight. Guests in our party were aged from 5 to 64 years old - nine in total. In writing a report, serious consideration must be made to the low cost element of this holiday (in comparison to Airtours etc) as it was cheap holiday during peak season. The flight with Jet 2 was excellent, despite being a ticketless airline; seats were allocated at check in (unlike Easyjet). Transfer also was straight forward with only our party on the coach and took about 1hr 10 mins, although the coach did not have air conditioning. On the return journey we had a 12 seater minibus and this was a struggle to fit nine passengers and all our luggage plus buggy - but we did it! The only comment I will make is that we were not pre-warned that the hotel is inaccessible to vehicles taller than a car so we had to be dropped off over the road and left to struggle with our cases under the underpass (beneath the train track) and down a tarmac road to the hotel. This is a struggle - especially if you have children in buggies and lots of baggage. The hotel. Check in was straight forward and we were all 'tagged' with purple bands for our all-inclusive privileges. Our room was modern, clean and spacious with a good sized balcony over the train track. Be warned - no sets of drawers! This made clothes storage a problem - especially if you had a wardrobe with no hangers. However, another party members' room was on the corner and had no balcony and was cramped but staff were able to juggle and move them down the corridor to another room. However, whilst we were there, other guests tried to move and found it problematic due to being full. Our room was services everyday but linen was not changed. Mosquitoes are a real problem, both in the rooms and sat out on an evening, so go prepared or look like a plague victim. Another problem with the room is on your key tag is a key soldered on for the electricity. This needs inserting when you are in the room, however when you leave and lock your door - your electric goes off along with air con and mosquito repellent plug. Unless you find a way to unsolder the key you get a warm room full of mossies. Another electricity associated problem is power cuts. We lost electricity around 25 times during our 7 days (12 times in one night). This is claimed, by staff, to guests plugging in hairdryers or turning TV on. Food. Very small selection for the three meals and I was getting a bit bored after three/four days. Though the food was warm and edible, just repetitive and due to poor selection a tad boring. The chef must have a cook book entitled '150 ways to batter or breadcrumb food' as what ever meat or veg we had at one meal would turn up battered at the next! However puddings were excellent with a wide range of fruit and blamonge. Also the ever open freezer of tubbed ice cream. Snacks. Available from pool bar 10am till 12.30pm and then 2.30pm till 6.30pm and was enforced strictly. Hot dogs, pizza (not the nicest I have eaten) and chips were offered plus ice creams. Coffee available 10am till 11.30pm and water from a self serve cooler (no bottles to be filled!!). Drinks. All inclusive drinks strictly 10am till 11.30pm. In the dinning room a self service system worked. Elsewhere friendly waiters served you a range of alcoholic beverages and even cocktails - ask for the list as waiters tend to be a bit possessive of it. All drinks (that is everywhere at all times except the fruit juice at breakfast) is served in small plastic cups. I believe due to previous problems of glasses being smashed and children getting cuts. This did tend to annoy those without kids. Also adults can only get 2 drinks at a time, children 1. Ice is bought in - so no upset tums. The dining room is too small for the 110 rooms and at busy times you may have to queue up outside for a table. Staff are very friendly and understand some English but smile at those who attempt Spanish. Noise is a problem on a night but with doors closed isn't too much of a problem. Gardens. Not enough sun beds for guests and no umbrellas for shade. You can not move chairs to sunbathing area - waiters reinforce this. The pool is very small and cramped at busy times - especially if kids go in with lilos. It graduates down a slope quite quickly and after about 7 strides is too deep to stand up so non swimming kids need adult supervision/armbands. Forget trying to swim as unless it is empty, it is just too small. A number of children got ear infections whilst at the hotel so watch out. There is also a Jacuzzi at the other end of the sunbathing area. Entertainment. Well I would rate this as the main problem with the hotel. There is an outside courtyard with tables and chairs with three 'pallet like' wooden boards that constitute a stage. A mini disco started around 8.30 for 30mins lead by the 'entertainer' a very friendly English girl of around 25 years of age and maybe one or two other hotel employees. After this music was left playing till later in the evening. The 'entertainer' then returned to invite guests to the stage to play games. Sometimes the games lasted 10 minutes (the adult balloon popping or the one house bingo that started at 11.10pm ran over last orders). The only outside entertainment was the parrot show where guests were charged 10 Euros to have a picture with a parrot - rip off. This was the worst entertainment I have ever seen in twenty five years of foreign package holidays. During the day the 'entertainer' provided crayons for children to colour or played ball games on the beach. During one my son found a used condom - so not ideal. It got so bad we took our children to the Monte Playa over the road and my children were given certificates and entertained by professionals there. Beach. Sharp sand, cooling breezes clear blue sea. However, two sunbeds and an umbrella cost 12 Euros for the day. The current was strong and the beach sloped into the sea very quickly. Beware of jelly fish, plenty about and very painful. Resort. Malgrat is clean and has a range of shops and local areas can be accessed by the efficient train network (station is 5 mins walk along front). There are lots of places to visit and activities galore. There are shops which sell goods very reasonable and if you are a smoker, cigarettes are very cheap. The markets sell clothes at very cheap prices - haggling obligatory! The underpass is a pain - especially on arrival. Summary. Despite the negativity above, we had a good holiday in a very clean hotel. The food was edible though a bit boring. Met some lovely people - guests were 95% British with the odd few Spanish. Would I return to resort? Probably not due to beach/sea not being child friendly. Would I return to the same hotel? If the price was as cheap then yes as it is good value for the price paid, I would just be prepared for the dismal entertainment - though on the last night it was a lot better so could it be improving??? --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hotel Amaraigua - Malgrat de Mar Operator and Date: Fleetway Travel - July 2005 Opinion submitted in July 2005 by : Vhairi and Dawn - Scotland (26) Resort Rating: Very Good Accommodation Rating: Very Good My/Our Holiday Review: We travelled to Girona from Stansted on 6th July 2005 for 1 week. From the comments we read on the hotel we did know what to expect. On our arrival at Girona airport the bus was there to pick us up with no problems and our hotel was the first drop off. No buses can get right outside the hotel due to the railway so we were dropped off straight across from the hotel where an underpass is situated. Our first impressions of the hotel were great. Situated right on the beach, the pool was quite small but acceptable and a jacuzzi with an outside bar. This hotel caters for children of all ages and is good for adults too. On the beach there are plenty of activites(trampolines, water skiing, go karting and pedalos). We ate in the restaurant on the first night, food was pretty average but out choice was to sample the good restaurants that were across the road from the hotel. As we are young the drinks and variety of cocktails available were well worth the money we paid. Entertainment at night was average and finished at 11.30pm, but there is a selection of pubs and clubs across from the hotel, we enjoyed waikiki and then on to tropicana which was open to 6am. On the day of your departure rooms have to be vacated by 10am, we were lucky we had an early flight, but you can keep your room at extra cost. All in all we had a fantastic holiday we felt it was well worth the money and met great people. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hotel Amaraigua - Malgrat de Mar Operator and Date: Fleetway - june 2005 Opinion submitted in July 2005 by : Wendy Laughlin - Whitehaven 35 36 12 14 Resort Rating: Very Good Accommodation Rating: Very Good My/Our Holiday Review: The hotel was very clean, Staff friendly, although your food was basic it was tasty enough. We were a little concerned at the lack of reviews on this accommodation and had to rely on what little there was including a hotel owned website. Don't be fooled by the website, it looks worse than it is in the photos. Firstly we booked through fleetway travel via the internet and although the price seemed fine - we did find it had lots of hidden problems and the worst being it was Ryan Air carrying us, NEVER again. Never having flown with them before we were prepared to give it a go despite not knowing who the carrier was to be until the documents arrived 10 days after booking. The hidden extras were lack of baggage allowance - we were 6kg over (we are used to having 20kg each not 15kg) that cost us close to £30. Ended up leaving stuff on the return journey to avoid the excess baggage charges Ryan air are keen on charging. We did opt for the taxi transfer rather than coach transfer but it wasn't quite as cheap as was quoted by the travel agent - however we did learn through experience that the best option when travelling by taxi was to get the "non airport" taxi services - ie go past the white ones and opt for the private hires further up the line of cars. It should cost less than 40 euros (for the 35km journey) but the airport ones charge a fixed fee of 50 euros. The return journey was also done by private taxi and was correct. As far as Ryan Air is concerned we did fine the ticket less airline to be a farce as we were at the end of the queue for nearly 2 hrs despite being there an hour earlier than required. And if you are unlucky to be over the allowances you have to go and pay at a separate desk and then rejoin the queue. Further when we did get to go to boarding we were sent to the wrong gate as they had changed it without telling anyone. No seats allocated either so it's an "it's a knockout" style "free for all" Very expensive food on board too £15 for two baguettes and two drinks. Take your own is our advice. On arrival at Girona airport the fleetway rep was precious little help - and all we wanted to know was where we went for the taxis.!!!!!! On to the accommodation "The Amaraigua Hotel" formerly known as the Santa Susanna Hotel - supposedly three star but doubt it. First of all I must say that the Spanish Management team here are at best abysmal. Most do not understand English which I find very strange considering that this hotel is primarily for British guests. They showed a distinct lack of concern over major health and safety matters especially during the instances of "accidents" here. In less than 7 days we witnessed one head injury requiring 8 stitches, one severely lacerated ankle (down to the bone) due to a dodgy drain cover, one fatal heart attack, one young child sucked into the Jacuzzi filtrations system, and a gashed wrist. All without exception met with derision and lack of concern by Spanish management. The first aid kit such as it was a disgrace - under lock and key and never available, no operational first aiders - no-one - not even the lady who tragically lost her husband was allowed to use the hotel phone. Putting that aside - if you haven't already decided not to go here - the room we had was great small, but comfortable - a great sea and beach view - the best room in the hotel - ROOM 214.... Bathroom small, small bath with shower - so if you like baths don't go here. Hot water is a bit hit n miss too. Air conditioning brilliant. Some rooms are infested with ants, our room floor wasn't swept or mopped for three days despite complaints, similarly the basin and toilet weren't cleaned either and toilet rolls ,must be in short supply. If you are travelling with a family opt for a family room as many rooms are very small - some people couldn't get into bathroom or onto balcony or terrace without moving furniture. If you have teenagers don't go here either - they will be bored silly within 48 hours. The All Inclusive option was ok but have had better - always plenty of variety, but chips every day - we only had one other potato option in 7 days. The Spanish could learn a thing or two from the Tunisians and Turkish. Drinks although plentiful and good measures are served in plastic cups ---- prefer glasses - I can understand around the pool but indoors and the communal entertainment area at night NO. The entertainment for adults at night is poor - we went out most nights - the mini-disco for kids is Ok and they seemed to enjoy it - the three girls who entertain have a very hard job to satisfy all but could be much better given more to work with. My impression about this hotel is that it is run with a very tight budget to the detriment of its customers. You cannot get a coffee before 8am when the restaurant opens for breakfast and the bar shuts at 1130pm without fail. Snacks aren't available after 6pm. Don't be fooled by the Parrot show either - what show!!!!! An opportunity for them to con you out of 10 euros for a photo taken without seeing it first..! Its only redeeming feature in my opinion is its location literally on the beach - no roads to cross, very close to the best range of bars some 4-5 English ones - The Robin Hood and Rovers Return very good and always lively. The Black Bull is quieter - the Legends pub is good too and all serve Stella, John Smiths and Fosters. All do breakfasts and good food. All very congenial as well. Along the front are the shops and usual tut type tourist goods. Its about an hour to Barcelona from Malgrat railway station (about 15mins walk form hotel) and costs 5.70 euros return and takes you right to Playa de Catalunya - the heart of Barcelona and only a hop skip and a jump to La Rambla with street entertainers and fine café bars and restaurants. At the end of this is the port area - A very fine city and worth a days visit. Marineland is apparently very good too if the kids like the water and you get good weather. The weather was brilliant about 28 degrees on average fine and sunny with only one day of cloud, but still very warm. Overall my advice Go to Spain by all means - Go to Costa Brava too just pay the extra and get some quality, don't travel Fleetway, don't travel Ryan air, don't go to this hotel. We made the best of it and had great fun with Nick and Bekka, Lorriane and Ian, so cheers guys hope we keep in touch --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hotel Amaraigua - Malgrat de Mar Operator and Date: Fleetway - May 2005 Opinion submitted in Sept 2005 by : Maisie Caldwell West Dumbartonshire [75,56] Resort Rating: Excellent Accommodation Rating: Excellent My/Our Holiday Review: the trip on the mini train up the mountain[not the town one]is a delight at 3.20 euros return.Amazing views excellent driver, fun filled trip, the best value for money you will ever get in your life. You can eat at reasonable prices anywhere in Malgrat/Santa Susanna.Taxis are reasonable in the resort and the drivers we hired were all very helpful and considerate at all times. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hotel Amaraigua - Malgrat de Mar Operator and Date: Fleetway Travel - 2005 Opinion submitted in Sept 2005 by : Danny & Nevina Cross - Lancs (30,27) Resort Rating: Very Good Accommodation Rating: Excellent My/Our Holiday Review: After finally getting tickets from fleetway (a lot of time on hold on the phone, and very unhelpful staff) we arrived at the amarigua, it is a short walk under the railway to the hotel but no problems, we had a double room on the ground floor facing the sea and bar area, yes the room is small, but air conditioned and all you do is sleep in there or get dressed, and of course an on suite. Room we did get was very nice, comfortable size and cleaned every day. There is no air conditioning so it was very warm at night but at least it felt safe enough for us to leave the balcony door wide open. The staff in the hotel, especially reception, were very friendly and helpful. In fact the only fault that we had was that we could not hire a fridge. The food was as you would expect for a 3* hotel, there was enough choice, the food was hot and it was the usual buffet. We were'nt too sure of this resort when we first got there but it did grow on us and we found the old part of the town to be really nice wuth quaint wee streets and good shops. We walked along to Santa Susannah but there was nothing there apart from hotels. There is a market on opposite the Bella Playa on a Thursday, we got some good bargains. The Catalan peole in this resort are very friendly and sociable which was lovely. The world cup was on when we were there but we did not see any trouble at all. The beach is man made but there are great waves and you are offered massages, go for it, they're great!!!!! For a back massage it was 5 Euro and it lasted for ages. There is a strip of pubs along the road (where the Wakiki bar and the tobacco shop is) quite lively at night and there is a great we Dutch carry out place there, the food was great and cheap. Along the road the other way at the old part, there is a narrow street with shops pubs etc, quite a bit along that street there is a Chinese restaurant. It does'nt look much from outside but the food was lovely and it was very cheap. We would go back as we were only there a week we did'nt feel that we had enough time to explre the area. One last comment, come on Thomas Cook, i'm sure that the seats are getting smaller on your planes. Also because they charges for extra leg room the flight coming back had no one sitting on them, how mean can you get!!!!!!!!!!!! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hotel Luna Park - Malgrat de Mar Operator and Date: Alpha Rooms - June 2007 Opinion submitted in June 2007 by : Julie Moore - Blackpool (63, 58, 36) Resort Rating: Very Good Accommodation Rating: Excellent My/Our Holiday Review: Lovely Hotel, all surrounding areas, swimming pool, gardens and extensive seating areas kept clean and tidy. Rooms are pretty basic and could do with a face lift but the cleaners do a good job. An excellent range of food, plenty of choices. Only problem with the dining rooms is too few staff for an exceptionally large turnover of diners in the morning and evening. Most mornings staff could not keep up with cleaning tables, Bringing in clean plates, glasses, crockery. Each morning we had to clear and clean a table for ourselves. However, in spite of this, would definitely go back again - good value for money from Alpha Rooms plus cheap return flights with Ryanair - bargain. Word of warning to people whose main aim is to get drunk and cause trouble and generally upset everyone, at this Hotel the Security will not tolerate this. Group of four males, first night drunk, smashing glasses, keeping everyone awake - they were warned, second night, repeat performance and worse. Police were called and they were made to pack up and escorted off the premises by the Police. The Hotel is set back from the Promenade and is quiet at nights. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hotel Luna Park - Malgrat de Mar Operator and Date: May 2004 Opinion submitted in May 2005 by : pete mourne 45 Resort Rating: Very Good Accommodation Rating: Very Good My/Our Holiday Review: we stayed in this hotel in may last year, we payed 13.25p per night, for half board ,and it is a 4star hotel. food great and plenty of it as well. it is write next to santa sussanna resort, and one hour by train to barcelona, we flew to gerona airport with ryanair from bournemouth £5.99 each, each way. wot a bargain! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hotel Monteplaya - Malgrat de Mar Operator and Date: (Direct Holidays) Direct Holidays - July 2006 Opinion submitted in August 2006 by : Lyndzi (18, 25) Resort Rating: Excellent Accommodation Rating: Very Good My/Our Holiday Review: The Hotel Monteplaya is a lovely hotel that we would definately visit again. The rooms and the hotel itself were very clean, our towels were changed daily and the staff were friendly (especially the receptionists they were very helpful). We stayed half bored but rarely ate in the hotel there was a good selection of food to choose from both at breakfast and in the evening however it was only so so. The pool area was very clean and there was always chance of a sunbed. The beach is a short walk away which you can reach via an underpass (this is because theres a railway line which runs through the resort however this didn't bother us one bit you hardly notice it in fact). The beach was nice and clean with coarse sand and there were plenty of sunbeds and umbrellas which you can hire at a cost of 4 euros each but beware the lady that hires these out doesn't like you to move them around as we found out when we tried moving them, she came straight over and moved them back which we found extremely amusing as we werent the only ones that tried it on. The only bad point about the beach was that there was a few people trying to sell us things such as sunglasses and watches etc but we worked out that if you dont show interest they won't bother you. There are plenty of shops, restaurants, bars and clubs to choose from. We never ate anywhere in particular but the food was nice wherever we went also if you fancy something English theres a Burger King a short stroll away just between Santa Sunsana and Malgrat. We spent most of our nights at the Waikiki bar and disco where we found the bar staff and the owner to be really friendly. Other good clubs and bars include The Rovers Return, Club Tropicana and OK Disco. If your going to come here you should definately take the time out to visit Barcelona, the aqua circus and waterworld. Overall we had a fantastic holiday and we are even thinking about going back to Malgrat again in September. This resort caters for all ages and its not too lively but not too quiet... a must visit! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hotel Monteplaya - Malgrat de Mar Operator and Date: may 2006 direct travel Opinion submitted in July 2006 by : ang 34 10 9 Resort Rating: Very Good Accommodation Rating: Very Good My/Our Holiday Review: this hotel was lovely and clean, towels changed daily, what a choice for breakfast it was great, plenty of choice for the kids to,evening meal could have been better but still plenty of choice, salad bar and cakes ,plenty of fruit to.no entertainment for kids during day,but pool was lovely.i had a nice room overlooking another hotel which had good entertainement every night. i would go back again definately --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hotel Monteplaya - Malgrat de Mar Operator and Date: 118TRAVELL LTD SEPT 2005 Opinion submitted in Oct 2005 by : Antony Lewis Basingstoke [52, 50,49,55 Resort Rating: Very Good Accommodation Rating: Very Good My/Our Holiday Review: We arrived at the Hotel Monteplayer in Malgrat de Mar .We found the hotel to be very clean and the staff very helpful .The rooms were clean and well presented although the only thing missing was tea and coffee and a kettle in the room. We found that the hotel backs onto another hotel which in the evening the entertainment does go on till midnight although watching the acts was quite good especially an english singer called Simon Grant . There is entertainment in the hotel which is not for the faint hearted and is certainally not for the younger generation .[ i would not take teenagers to this hotel or even young children as there is no entertainment at all for the younger guest . We ate out every day although we did sample the breakfast provided sample was the word. It was the only dissapointing event of our stay not for the faint hearted . The beach was clean although the sand was very course on the feet and there was plenty of room to sunbathe during the day .No vendors selling nicnaks on the beach . there is a train that passes through Malgrat de mar up to santa susannah and on to Barcelona . There was a train/tractor to transport people at a cost round town . We found that a pub restaurent called Legends offered the best meal and welcome the whole time we were there. We did try other restaurents and pubs but always went back to Legends . Night life was not bad although this was not high season but still enjoyable .But when you have seen one shop in a tourist hiliday town you have seen them all .There were 4 of us in the party we transferred by Holiday Taxi .com .We found that this easily the best way to transfer.Although it did seem a tad expensive but the vehicle and driver was waiting at the airport [Gerona]. We were also picked up on time . All in all we enjoyed the holiday to Malgrat de mar and staying at the Hotel Monteplayer was comfortable and the hotel fits the 3 star rating it has been given . The hotel was immaculate, the food was fair - although there was a good choice, and you could always find something to eat. The pool was great, although the chlorine was excessive (it turned the ends of our daughters hair green!). The hotel is in a good location, and santa susana is a short stroll away. The entertainment at the hotel was for the spanish (to be expected at his time of the year, and the fact that we were in Spain!), although the kids rep did her best to try and keep them entertained. I would definetly recommend this hotel to families who are looking to relax and take it easy, but the resort is not for the active or beach lovers (the beach is coarse pebbles with jelly fish aplenty!). Try out the Black bull bar around the corner from the hotel, the staff there made our holiday! Standards of cleanliness excellent, rooms a decent size,at night entertainment mostly geared towards the elderly spanish guests who seem to frequent this hotel. However, this did not affect us due to the fact we were not prepared to pay exorbitant bar prices and spent many enjoyable evenings at the newly located Eureka Bar, reasonable prices, warm welcome, very friendly staff. In previous years from 8.30pm till 9.30pm two drinks for the price of one but for the week we were there only one happy hour. As one of the previous contributors mentioned , evening meal could be extended by at least half an hour - however at approximately 8pm the staff like to get all guests out to set up tables for the spanish guests who dine separately. Bottles of wine to drink with evening meal are quite expensive - we liked to have one similar to a frascati about £3.99 at home - paid 10.50 Euros. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hotel Monteplaya - Malgrat de Mar Operator and Date: Globespan - May 2005 Opinion submitted in July 2005 by : 44, 36 Resort Rating: Good Accommodation Rating: Very Good My/Our Holiday Review: We arrived on time but there was quite a bit of confusion where the meeting point was. Anyway, we finally set-off however with all the stop offs, it was over 2hrs before we arrived at our hotel...and it was only 40K from Barcelona! Hotel was clean and room was adequate. Only draw back with room was that the walls were very thin..and you could hear your neighbours talking etc. The pool looked beautiful and clean. Although we had booked half board we decided against trying the food due to previous experience with 3* hotel food plus the eating times were between 7-8pm...was a bit limiting and it looked really busy. The resort itself was not as busy as say Calella and not much to see or do if it rained...which it inevitably did. The biggest drawback was the railway line in front of the hotel which had high speed trains running every 1/2 hr. Would consider going bk in height of summer but stay in a hotel away from the seafront. I tried my bit of Spanish language on her and we got on famously after that. Nothing to do in Malgrat but sunbathe, some pleasant parks up in the town but this is the only place in Spain where I was bored. You also have to share a table if the hotel is busy. I saw some evidence of food being recooked and served again the next evening, and we both suffered a bit of stomach trouble, but nothing requiring medical treatment, and as it only cost £149.00 each I am not complaining. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hotel Papi - Malgrat Operator and Date: Self Booking. Firstly, the room that we were given, was very small. There were 3 single beds, 1 wedged up against the wardrobe, another next to it, approx 18" of space, then another bed wedged up against the wall. You had to climb on the bed to get to the wardrobe. After the first night, the air con in our room packed up. (No fun in the August heat!) It wasn't until the night before we were due to leave that it was repaired. We were all inclusive(our first time). Breakfast was fine. Couldn't complain. We had a good choice. E.g. fried food (egg, bacon, sausages, beans etc), a choice of 3 cereals, toast, and fruit. There was a good choice of fruit juices. There were tea and coffee machines available too. (we didn't have this as the coffee was just far to bitter) Dinner & tea were different. They seemed to have alot of the same. Pork that was very tough, chicken that was very brown, and a lot of fish dishes that tasted all the same. There were plenty of desserts. Mainly cold ones. There was a good supply of fresh fruit. There was no catering for children. All children can be finicky with their food, and mine is no exception. But on at least 3 occasions, he had lettuce in a roll, followed by ice-cream. There was a huge amount of ice-cream available (in small tubs) at every meal time. The facilities here are to a bear minimum. A small swimming pool. A very small kiddies pool. A gym, with very dated equipment. A games room with 2 pool tables, air hockey (which was out of order)and a shooting machine. All of which required euros. A sauna, which was not available to all inclusive customers, you had to pay 10 euros for 30 minutes. Please when you obtain your safe (28 euros, 10 euros you'll get back) make sure you keep the receipt you're given. This is your insurance if anything was to happen to your belongings. The beach here is quite gritty. It is extremely clean, and you feel safe amongst the other bathers. Do be careful with young children, as the sea can be quite choppy. There are plenty of shops selling: leather goods, jewellery, souvenirs. There are some lovely eating places too. In our view, the good points to this holiday were: The beach, the weather, the lovely people (the hotel was small, so you make friends easily). There were some very good excursions to go on too. Barcelona is a place that should not be missed. Especially the 'Family Church'. It's still in the process of being built. It began 1000 years ago. The trip to Marineland is excellent, and if you like waterparks, make sure you take your swimwear too!! This holiday would most suit people who are keen to have fun with the help of alcohol(it's available from 10am - midnight)!! Even better we booked a direct flight, and without our prior knowledge we stopped for 45 mins in doncaster. We were also advised at the airport that we will be staying on resort for 1 extra day (so we could get our seventh night that was paid for) and that we could keep on our room. When we arrived at Hotel Planamar we were informed by the receptionist that we must check out on the saturday morning 10 am remember our busses to the airport was not departing untill 5am sunday mornnig. we paid for a seven night holiday not 6. Further more how were parents with young children supposed to cope. We told the reception that sunways had prommised us that we would keep the room and the planamar staff said and i quote SUNWAYS HAD NOT INFORMED US OF THE DELAY, that is what planamar management told us. We had to wait 48 hours to see our holiday rep and folks she was useless. She told us she would sort it, so nearly every day was wasted waiting on her to show up. She was very rude and inpolite. Now we come to the accomodation and the food. In the room (305) you could not swing a cat it was dirty and them balcanies are very dangerous. On one occasion our white towels had brown stains you can guess what that was your self. the food was'nt great and every snack time it was always burger and chips. the bar staff were very rude. The only time we enjoyed our holiday was when we were off resort. Laqdies and Gentlemen as you can see sunways are useless and we will never travel with them again, and we will never stay at planamar. Friendly staff, drinks served in plastic cups that made your beer taste flat. Entertainment mainly for children. Good point is its close to the train station where you can get to Barcelona for 6 Euros each return, well worth a visit fantastic buildings and you must walk down the rambles and see the live statues!! Marineland great if you can swim as they have incorporated an aqua park as well as the marine zoo, free bus available and great if you want to stay all day but a problem if you want to leave after couple hours as bus doesnt return till 4.15. The old town of Malgrat is well worth a wander around, some lovely buildings. Just outside hotel some good shops. Cigarettes & tobacco can now only be bought in tabac shops and very few machines in a few pubs. Dont buy in Gerona Airport on way back as very expensive with one price for non EU and one price for EU which is a lot more so remember to buy in resort. If you fancy a good british breakfast try the New Crown & Anchor as it is a great british pub, good price and just around the corner, turn left when leaving the hotel. On the whole we loved the resort and will return but will stay at a different hotel. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Planamar - Malgrat de Mar Operator and Date: northen holidays june 2006 Opinion submitted in June 2006 by : ian dean manchester 47 44 19 17 Resort Rating: Average Accommodation Rating: Below Average My/Our Holiday Review: hotel was clean but if you get room 310 the smell of sewage is overpowering the food could be better the legends bar too streets down does great british grub and do not expect a late drink the bar shuts dead 12 apart the above the staff on the hole were frendley --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Planamar - Malgrat de Mar Operator and Date: (sunways- may 2006) Opinion submitted in May 2006 by : stephen - bognor regis 20 Resort Ra |
