My/Our Holiday Review:

Returned from a weeks holiday at Albir Gardens on 7th July, and to be honest, was happy to leave the place.

To be fair, I should, at the outset, inform that we have never stayed at such a large complex before, so my feelings on the place are perhaps a little driven by this fact, but there's still no disguising that it was not a completely pleasant holiday experience.

The transfer from the airport was approximately 40 minutes, with ours being the first stop. On arrival, we were dealt with efficiently, by the reception staff, who were courteous and friendly. We were allocated room 109, in Block I, which was a ground floor apartment, despite my request at the time of booking, and indeed a phone call to the hotel 4 days before we left, that we be put in a top floor apartment. We went back to reception immediately and asked to be moved, but were told that this was impossible, as the complex was totally full. This actually was not true, but I will return to this later.

The one-bed apartment itself was clean on arrival, but was disappointingly small and tired. In talking to another family, we found out that their block (H) had been refurbished, but ours obviously hadn't. The kitchen units were very old and the bottoms were manky, due to water penetration over a long period of time. What we originally thought was a microwave, turned out to be an overly large grill, which was riddled around the edges with rust. As others have already said, pans etc were limited. There was a new fridge, although the seal on the door was not great and consequently, our first job was to mop up puddled water over the bottom of the fridge and on the kitchen floor.

The bathroom was even worse... cracked and broken tiles were evident and the grouting had disintegrated and was in fact non-existant around the bath, where a shower would mean water getting down behind the bath... goodness knows what it was like behind there! Additionally, closing the door was an adventure in itself, as the handle would sometimes fail to open the door properly, and on a few occasions, we had to "rescue" our boys, who were "locked in"!

The main living area is very small and to be honest, would have been more suited to a couple with one small child. The small area was further compromised by a large dining table and 4 chairs and a coffee table. There was a TV, which provided about a dozen channels, mainly Spanish, but also with Eurosport and Sky News.

The balcony was small, but somehow they managed to fit a small table and 3 chairs on it, however, only 2 people could practically fit comfortably. This overlooked a garden area. My fear was that it provided a bit of a security risk, as it could easily be accessed by simply climbing over the rails, which my kids did easily on many occasions, to play ball in the garden.

The apartments' location means it is very noisy. Being right by the front communal door, which was opened and closed constantly and people running up and down the stairs. It was a particular pain after midnight, when the "entertainment" stopped and there would be people coming back, some of them the worst for wear, talking loudly, when we were trying to get to sleep. Then we would get the dragging of furniture across the ceilings above, as people got the portable beds out etc. One consolation, was that our apartment at least had air conditioning, which was very welcome during the day. The remote control for which, was available from reception, for a refundable 20 euro deposit. Safety deposit boxes are also available for hire and are situated in the reception area. These work out at about 10 euros for the week, plus an additional, refundable 10 euro deposit.

Finally, and extremely annoyingly, the cleaners NEVER visited our apartments during the whole week that we were ther! NO towel changes ... NO sheet changes and NO cleaning... NOTHING!

There are 3 pools... one paddling pool, one medium depth saltwater pool and one deep conventional pool, (the shallowest area being 1.54 metres). Despite there being in excess of 400 apartments on the complex, I counted just 15 parasols. Typically, by 8.30am, these are already "reserved" by towel, as seems the norm these days, unfortunately!

Poolside, there is a bar and also a snack bar, serving, hot dogs, burgers, chips etc.

There is a large restaurant on site, servicing all meals. We only had breakfasts in it, which cost 5.5 euros for adult and 3 euros for children. There was plenty of variety, and couldn't really be faulted. People that we spoke to who had eaten lunch and dinner there, were satisfied.

Here's a tip for you though .... we got friendly with a couple on the flight there from Belfast and on the second day, they enquired about going all-inclusive. They were offered, and received, all-inclusive for 6 days (Monday to Sunday) for two adults and two children (aged 12 and 11) for 185 euros, total... that's just 31 euros per day for a family of four!... all meals, snacks, ice-creams and drinks from 8am to midnight!

The bar area is suitably large and contains a couple of pool tables and machines and a suite of internet stations. Unfortunately, during the entire week, it was filled from morning to night with Spanish agents and customers on timeshare trips. I would say that there were about 60 people at any one time, walking around the complex in groups of 5 or 6 and viewing empty apartments (presumably the refurbished ones that we were denied), then retreating to the bar for the hard sell.

There is nightly "entertainment" which starts at about 7.30pm and goes on until midnight. The "Animation Crew" are all Spanish and to be honest, it would be kind to say that it is mediocre, but I suppose it serves its' purpose of keeping people there to buy drinks at the bar. Annoyingly though, it is aimed predominantly at the Spanish, with occasional translations into English. This includes, bingo, musical chairs and a reptile "show". There is supposed to be a full programme of daily children's entertainment as advertised in reception, but again this is Spanish orientated, and I didn't see that many British/Irish taking part. On the one occasion that my kids were approached to take part in an activity, it turned out to be a knitting class! ... just what my kids wanted on holiday....

There are car parking spaces available around the complex for the independent traveller, or for those hiring cars.

As I mentioned before, the complex staff appeared helpful and friendly at all times. However, a big let down, is that the foreign guests come second compared with the Spanish holidaymakers, which, I would say, made up 80% of occupancy while we were there! Examples would be that, despite us queueing to see a receptionist, the Spanish would simply jump the queue and walk up to the front, to be immediately dealt with. On one occasion, a receptionist walked away from an Irish woman in the middle of a query, to deal with a Spanish queue jumper... appaling. It was the same in the bar.

On one occasion, my 2 boys had booked an hour on the table tennis table and after 20 minutes, 3 Spanish boys had come over and tried to bully them off, banging on the table and generally trying to make it impossible to play. I went over to see what the problem was, and one of them told me that Reception had said they could play... I told them to clear off, but they continued to skulk around, very close to the table, putting my boys off.

On the whole, the Spanish holidaymakers themselves were rude and strutted around the place like they owned it.

There is a good supermarket opposite the apartments and the prices are reasonable. Within a couple of minutes, there is another larger, supermarket, which is used more by the locals, so is a good sign.

Although the resort isn't overly large, there are many restaurants, including quite a few Chinese, an Indian, Argentinian, Tex-Mex and others... there is also a McDonalds about 10 minutes walk away.

You can take a relaxing 2 1/2 mile stroll to the nearby resort of Altea, via the walkway alongside the pebble beach. Altea is very much a Spanish resort and working town and is actually quite busy. Alternatively, you can jump on the no. 10 bus outside the apartments and get to Altea for 1 euro. At the same bus stop (and for the same amount) you can get the bus going the other way to Benidorm, which is approximately 5 miles away. It must be an acquired taste though, because I found it to be unpleasant as a resort, dirty, overcrowded and overbearing... maybe it's just me....

We spent an enjoyable day at Terra Mitica theme park - we went on a Monday, which was a good move, as it wan't too crowded. In fact the longest we had to queue for a ride was 10 minutes. The park itself is quite expansive and is based on 5 lands .. Egyptian, Greek, Roman etc and there are a few hairy rides there to say the least, to satisfy a seasoned adrenalin junkie, as well as fun water based rides, carousels etc... very enjoyable. Entry is 32 euros for adults and 25.5 euros for kids. However, the reps in the hotel have special deals and we paid a total of 87 euros for 4 of us and also the privilege of not having to queue at the main entrance to the park.

The weather all week was fantastic ... 32-35 degrees everyday and the evenings being warm also (around 22 degrees). Although we had packed a couple of light long sleeved garments for the evenings, we didn't use them.

Having said all the above, my kids pretty much enjoyed the holiday, due largely to teaming up with a couple of likeminded kids. Nonetheless, we certainly wouldn't go back to this resort, or more particularly to the Albir Gardens ... it's just not for us!

My/Our Holiday Review:

The apartments were very small, no kettle and very basis utensils in the kitchen. Sitting room had a sofa, table and chairs and t.v. Bedroom had 2 beds, 2 bedside cabinets, large wardrobe with no draw space and no hangers. Everytime we switched on the hob it blew the fuses, told reception staff 3 times but it was not fixed. To be honest the place was like butlins abroad (not that there is anything wrong with butlins if you like that sort of thing, its just not for us) its a good 20 minute walk from beach. Good eateries are the dubliner. argentina steak house, lion bar and porters.

Would go to albir again but not to albir gardens.

My/Our Holiday Review:

Just back from a week at the Albir Gardens. Loved it!

The apartment was lovely and clean and not a insect in sight the whole week! There is air-conditioning, you have to pay a deposit of 20 euros to get the remote control but you get the full deposit back when you return the remote control. It was a bit of a pain having only 1 mirror in the apartment (may cause problems if there with teenage girls) but other than that no problems. Maid changed towels nearly every day and changed bed sheet twice. The gardens are lovely, lush and well maintained.

We weren't sure what to expect as we had never been all exclusive before but it turned out to be great value for money. The food was varied, good quality and plenty of it - too many tempting choices sometimes! There was food and drink available between 0800 hours and midnight every day and you could order pack lunches on 24 hours notice if you were going away for the day. We actually ordered them for the day we left as we would miss a mealtime and it would save buying food at the airport. We were very lazy and chilled on the balcony or by the pool most days. The pool area is clean and tidy with plenty of sunloungers available. There was entertainment laid on every evening but it was a bit cheesy - fun, but cheesy! Still the free drinks went down a treat and improved the entertainers performances! Had a day in Benidorm which was nice but very busy. Also walked along the promenade from Albir to Altea which is the next fishing village. There isn't a great deal to do in Albir but then again we weren't looking for daily activities so as a couple who just wanted a relaxing chilled-out break, we found it perfect.

Would highly recommend the Albir Gardens and Albir. Will definitely think about going back there again.

Thia was alast minute booking and i have got to say for the price we paid it was excellent value. The hotel was very clean and the staff were very friendly, the food was of an average standard. The resort of Albir is fairly quiet, nightlife fairly lowkey but some really nice places to eat especially the various chinese in the resort. The beach is pebbly but you can hire sunbeds for a reasonable price and the views are stunning.Benidorm is only a few miles away and the bus service is very reliable,if you are out later than the bus service runs a taxi is about 10euros.I would say that Albir is more of a low key resort, perfect for a chilled out time but if you are looking for something more then Benidorm is just a short taxi or bus ride away.

I would reccomend this resort but not to those looking for a frenetic nightlife.

My/Our Holiday Review:

Albir was a chance booking we made just at the last minute.

We have just returned home and thought we should let other people know what a fantastic holiday had by all.The place itself is not that big but plenty to see.We found the place very clean, many dust cart men pushing their trollys up and down.

The walk to the lighthouse is a must for the views, take a camera.

The beach of pebbly type which lets Albir down.

We found lots of food places to eat but the best we found was The American Diner, great food and great host's.Family run from yorkshire i think.

Nearby Benidorm is easy to reach by bus,but these can get packed so makes it awkward when you have young children but taxis are fairly cheap.Benidorm is a place you like or hate, but shopping good in the old town.Take plenty of water because the heat from the sun can catch you out.

We were going to hire a car but had second thoughts, driving looked abit fast and furious.

Oh and since we have come back we found website all about albir albirspain com so have alook for yourself.

we will be returning to Albir next year but we were not too impresed with albir Gardens so will try to look at an alternative

My/Our Holiday Review:

We have just returned from 14 days at Albir Garden. The first impressions of the hotel were outstanding.

We arrived late at night, but we were greated by a very friendly lady, who told us were our room was and about the hotel. We were on the second floor. When the lift door opened we were speachless. There was a beautifully lit corridor leading to our room.

The room itself was nice, clean and there was almost everything that you would need for your holiday (no can opener or cork screw) but if you ask you get them, they get stolen we were told.

The entertainment was great. The presenter is a English gent called Stephen. He makes you fell at home.

Our room was cleaned 8 times while we were there. The towels were changed every 3 days and the sheets twice a week. Which isn't bad for self catering.

All in all, we had a fantastic 2 weeks. There is everything that you need in the hotel, heated indoor pool, laurderette, 2 outdoor pools, childs splash pool.

I would definetely go back to Albir Garden.

This was our first self catering holiday

We have just returned from a fantastic Oct 1/2 term holiday at the Albir Garden Hotel. The weather was stunning, blue skies and hot sunshine every single day, the hotel was clean, friendly and in a great location, the rooms are basic to say the least, but then who goes to a sunny country to spend it within four walls!! The crowning glory of this hotel is without a doubt the pool, its beautiful, inviting and extremely well maintained.

Albir itself had everything we could have wanted. An abundance of restaurants of every nationality, a lovely promenade, just the right amount of people and its very child friendly. Albir is very, very different from Benidorm so if its a fast pace and hoards of people you're after, Albir is not for you.

We are already booking our return trip for next year.

My/Our Holiday Review:

My Mum and I went to Albir Garden Apartments on Sat 15th October to Sat 22nd October.

We were extremely unhappy, the apartment was small, the kitchen had cracked floor tiles and the surfaces, sink and fridge were dirty. The bathroom floor tiles were cracked and the bath was chipped and dirty, we had two very small threadbare hand towels and bath towels, there was no tea towel, we had 4 knives, forks, spoons, cups, saucers plates, bowls and glasses, the one sharp knife that was provided we had trouble cutting bread, no vegetable knife or peeler, colender or potato masher.

The oven didn't work properly. I complained about the oven and on the 3rd day of our holiday we received a brand new oven but no instructions how to use it. The complex was overrun with wild cats. The one good thing about the holiday was the company of my mum and the weather.

I definately would not go back to Albir Garden Apartments and if this had been my first holiday to Spain I would never go back to Spain, but fortunately we have had other holidays to Spain all of them booked with Direct Holidays and I would book with them again.

Reception, pool & gardens very nice. Rooms small and very basic, only one pan and not even a teatowel! The fridge door was brown with rust. Oven door didn't close properly. Something nasty was growing down the toilet! Don't expect much privacy in your room, you are overlooked everywhere. The balcony was very small and many (including ours) got no sun at all! Benidorm, a couple of miles away is very convenient for lovely clean beaches, shopping and nightlife.

I would consider going back to Albir, but not Albir Gardens!

My/Our Holiday Review:

Albir gardens was kept clean and the hotel blocks were set in nice gardens and the entire hotel was kept well.

We went when it was spanish fortnight, this meant the hotel was quite full of spanish but normally the english fill around 70% of it. The staff at the various bars were quite rude and favoured the spanish. (They would serve them before us even if we'd waited the longest) We were not the only people to notice this. The hotel has a great kids play area and a two great pools. BUT be warned there were no inflatables e.g lilo's allowed in any. This might have been because it was peak season.

The rooms were o.k, they would be top small though for families with older children. The hotel had a cinema with two showings a day of newish release videos e.g nemo, this was great as it was boiling when we were there, it gave the kids a break from the sun.

We went self catering, and could have eaten in the hotel but it was expensive so we didn't bother. The snack bars were reasonably priced though. The airtours had kids clubs but you had to pay extra for these but the hotel ran it's own for no extra charge, our children didn't want to get involved but many other kids seemed to like them. The entertainment at night was a kids disco followed by karaoke and then a couple of different shows, e.g mr albir (the guests get involved with this if they want to,)then a magican. We stayed for a couple of nights but we liked going into the resort centre better.

The hotel has a bit of derelict land opposite and some building work going on around it, but within 5mins you get to the resort centre which then takes you onto the beautiful beach/promenade. There are a couple of bars opposite the hotel. Shelvins is great we went there for a few breakfasts. There is a supermarket opposite but it is quite expensive, there is one a lot cheaper down the road.

On the way to the centre of the resort there is a great place to eat called the American Diner. It is run by a couple from Yorkshire. Great place to eat. It is next to a pub three lions. There is also a great chinese place inbetween a pizza and Argentia pub to eat. There are also lots of nice place for a drink Oasis bar and Lords pub are just a couple. There are lots of nice Spanish pubs too.

There are a few posh bars on the sea front, one with lilos in pools for you to sip a cocktail on!!

There are not many souvenior shops though unless you want handbags or shoes.

There are a few things for the kids to do. There is a place called the globe park. It cost 8euro for each child. It has lots of varied bouncy castles, quite dear though. There is also a crazy golf park on the sea front.

The harbour is beautiful especially when it's all lit up at night. There are some stalls at night around an anchor monument. They sell crafty things and hair braids etc. There is a promenade which you can walk down and if you keep going for about 35mins it takes you to Altir. This resort is similar to Albir.

The beach of Albir is pebble. It is very nice. You can get pedalo's etc, if you want any more watersports you have to go to Benidorm.

From outside the hotel you can get a bus to Benidorm it's 85 cent each. Benidorm is very busy but nice to visit.

We did two organised trips with airtours. The first was to Mundomar. This place is great. My kids had there picture taken with a sealion and a dolphin!!! There were lots of shows and different animals to see. Definately a must, my kids will remember this day forever.

The second trip was split into two parts. The first was to Noahs Arco which was a voluntary run Zoo with animals that had become ill / been badly treated. A great place, then we went to fonts de algar (i think thats what it's called.) Beautiful waterfall that you can swim under.

There were lots more trips but we just did those two.

Overall we had a great holiday, our only gripes would be some of the hotel staff were not very polite and don't go in peak season if you want a quiet holiday, as the hotel is large, there is lots of noise at night, especially as you can't shut your windows beacause t's too hot!!

(It was very hot when we were there)

We are a couple who visited Albir in August staying at the Albir Gardens. Albir Gardens is definately a family orientated hotel with plenty to do for kids as well as adults and entertainment every night, the staff are very friendly and helpful, the rooms are a bit small and basic and have no air conditioning, as we were there in August it was unbearable at night even tho we managed to hire a couple of fans.

there are 2 swimming pools and both are full all day long, if you are at the pool for 8.30am you should get a sun lounger ok any later forget it!If you are going here as a family you will probably enjoy it. As a couple it wasnt really for us.

The resort itself is fairly low key, the beach is about a 15 minute walk away which is quite nice but is pebbles (some large) Eating and drinking is quite cheap 2 Euros most places for a pint of Lager and 3 Euros for a large vodka, a meal worked out at 20 Euros for 2 people although there are a few cheaper than that depending on what you want, one particular bar we enjoyed was (Caspers) which is run by a Scottish couple Billy and Doreen, Billy has the patter for the punters and makes you feel at home, another one worth a visit is (ye olde pub)plenty laughs at the karaoke here hosted by a Spaniard caled Allan Grant??? If you want more entertainment then Benidorm is only 15 mins by taxi and costs 6 Euros.

overall Albir is a quiet resort and ideal for couples who like to things at the slow pace..we would go back again but to a different hotel which is much quieter and one where we ciuld have a bit of room to use the pool

Reception area of the hotel was nice. Appartments OK but a bit small. No air conditioning in the appartment though. Food in the hotel was nice but not the freshest. Resort was OK and over the road from the reception part was an Irish pub called the Dubliner that showed live football and other sports. Staff in the hotel and round the poolside are not that cheery. Entertainment at night not that good.

After reading the reviews in "Costa Blanca Benidorm", not "Costa Blanca Misc" as I should have, I was not expecting one of the best holidays ever!! Even a woman in the airport on the way there told us to expect a holiday from hell!!

How wrong can people be? The rooms are in the top 5 of the ones we have had and believe me we have had some good ones [And bad, some very bad!]. Very clean, quite spacious, seperate bedroom and even a seperate kitchen.

The only reason I can think of for people not liking the Albir Gardens is that they were expecting to be in Benidorm. We actually found this an advantage, there is nowhere in Benidorm that you can get to equal the excellence of the Albir Gardens apartments without paying through the nose! An 85 cent bus ride gets you into Benidorm and if you want to drink till the early hours then get a taxi back, they're not dear.

All in all, I would definitely reccommend the Albir Gardens and would not hesitate to book again and if you like Chinese food then look no further than the one accross from the hotel, the food is top notch.

Just back from a brilliant holiday - rooms clean, adequate but compact, hotel and complex was spotless, friendly staff couldn't do enough for you, entertainment was okay every night, very children orientated (kept our daughter amused all day by playing games in and out the water.

Two supermarkets in area - the one directly across from Albir Gardens okay for your paper in the morning, but two minutes down the hill large supermarket selling everything really cheap (i.e. bottle of nice white wine 1 euro, 12 Amstel lagers 4 euro's)

When taking the bus into Benidorm (85 cents) or going to the supermarket you must wear a t-shirt.

J P Shelvins (irish bar across from big supermarket) was really friendly and a kids meal (main course, pudding and cocktail drink) was only 4 euros.

In Albir we found a nice pizza restaurant(Paulinos?) and a scottish bar called Caspers.(Billy and Doreen).

The beach at Albir is about a twenty minute walk but well worth a visit.

If you buy your tickets online for Terra Mitica the second day if free(wished we had done that so that we could have gone in an evening when it is slightly cooler)

(Taxi 14 euros from hotel).

Only bad thing is that we stayed for one week rather than two, didn't want to go home.

My/Our Holiday Review:

Albir is a resort that is around 10 to 15 minutes from Benidorm. It is a pleasant, quieter resort, compared to Benidorm, but enough shops etc to keep you busy.

The beach front has a nice long front, the beach is a pebble beach, really nice. The beach is around 10 minutes walk from the Albir Gardens and it is not a bad walk, through the town and shops.

The Albir Gardens has a childrens pool and two other large pools. It also has an indoor heated pool, which is useful if the weather is not too good. The appartments were good, clean and tidy and I had read previous reports which said they were a little small when fully occupied. I found them to be fine, enough space for us four.

The kitchen area was quite well stocked with utensils etc, we stayed on a half board basis and the food was excellent. It was our first Holiday on a half board basis, we were really pleased with the quality and variety on offer.

All in all, we had mixed weather, but we really enjoyed our stay at the Albir Gardens and would visit again in the future. I would summaries that if you like a clean, tidy comlex, good kids park and soft play areas and good food, peace and quite at nite, then this is a great place to visit.

My/Our Holiday Review:

Have just returned for Hotel Albir Playa, Albir. We found this hotel to be of an excellent standard. The rooms are spotless, cleaned everyday with clean towels daily. The pool was a clean and had a lifeguard on duty daily and there is a playground for smaller kids with hotel run games for young and old.

There is also a gym and indoor pool although the weather was so good we didnt use it. The restaurant had plenty of choices and was always well presented. The reception staff were very pleasant and helpful.

The resort itself is fairly quiet but spotlessly clean compared to Benidorm. We visited both Terra Mitica and Terra Natura which are well worth a visit also the dolphin show at Mundamar was excellent.

We stayed at the hotel on a B&B basis and found an excellent Scottish bar/restaurant in the resort center called the Oasis Bar. Dot Dave & Lisa made our holiday.. Not only is the food all homemade (no frozen meals here!!)

but the bar was very reasonablly priced and immaculatly clean.(I'm sure this has the cleanest toilet in Spain) They catered for my choosy kids(and husband!) and since they only opened 3 weeks prior have attracted holiday makers and ex pats alike. A must to visit!!

Would definatley go back to Albir for Dot's lasagne if nothing else!!!

My/Our Holiday Review:

Just spent a week at the Albir Playa Hotel in Albir.

The hotel is really nice and is spotlessly clean. Our room was on the third floor overlooking the pool where we got the sun on the balcony in the evenings. Our balcony was bigger than most of the rooms because we were next to the fire escape stairway and didn't have a room adjoining us on that side. We were on a half board basis and although the breakfast was very good, we were a little disappointed with the dinner and felt the food could have been hotter.

If we went back we would go bed and breakfast as there are so many places to eat close by. It is very easy to get around, with the buses running very regularly at approximately every 10 minutes. It is worth going in to Altea either by bus or a leisurely walk along the prom which takes aprox 1 hour. It is worth the climb up to the church as the scenery is spectacular. There are some beautiful restaurants there and we had a meal at one called Stromboli where we ate outside on the lovely roof terrace. Benidorm is only about 5 kms from Albir and with the cheap and regular bus service it is easy to get there. One thing the hotel could improve on is to get more umbrellas around the pool as there are not nearly enough.

Albir nightlife is very low key but there are plenty of restaurants and places to have a quiet drink and Benidorm is close by if you want something more lively.

My/Our Holiday Review:

We booked this Holiday 2 weeks before we went, and all i can say is it was lovely.

Not great for Kids in the hotel in less like ours they would enjoy the pool all day. On a night there is not much Life in Albir but its a nice peaceful Place with good food and great prices on drinks. we stayed half board, which i would'nt do again the food was very Spainsh lots of fish and things you have never seen before.but we went out a couple of times too, for a great chinese meal.

The hotel is very clean and Safe they only thing about the hotel is the lifts they have a mind of thier own and you can be waiting for up to 10 min for it to reach you, talk about slow ..... so we used the stairs abit (it helped with the waist line)

We got a hire car for the week but never really used it, we went out to a water park but it was not very good for children under 11 as they could'nt go on much, so dont bother if you have children below this age.

The Hotel did'nt have many Uk people staying in it, it was mostly Spainsh and a few german and french, only a couple of other UK famlies.

Well i would say we had a good time, oh before i go .. the showers in the hotel are GREAT you will have never been in such a shower, strong - fast - and very relaxing. Enjoy yourself if you go, we did.

My/Our Holiday Review:

We booked as a late deal for two weeks at the great price of £319 per person and expected to get a hotel in Benidorm as there are many hotels to choose from. However, we were told at the airport when we arrived that we would be staying in the new hotel 'Alfas Beach' in Albir. We were not too bothered about this as we knew that it was easy to get to Benidorm on the bus for 85c.

When we arrived at the hotel, we realised that it was 4 star and a lovely hotel indeed (only a few months old). Air-conditioned throughout and furnished to a very high standard. Large outdoor and indoor pools, a jacuzzi and mini gym.

The room that we were given on the 3rd floor overlooked the pool and also had a great view over Albir. It had a tv, fridge, hair dryer, lots of storage space as well as a FREE safety deposit box!!! Maid service was daily and rooms were cleaned to a very high standard.

The food was to a good standard, although repetitive and sometimes not very hot, however, when we asked for more of something, we were abliged, and it was hot! When you arrive at the dining hall, you are shown a table to sit at.

This is ok, but when there is confusion between the head waiter and his staff this can be rather annoying!!

On one occasion at breakfast, we were told to sit anywhere on the left hand side, but when we got there we were briskly sent to the other side. I explained that we were told by the head waiter to go to that side and this caused a row between the two waiters but we were given no apology by either of them.

A few days later on Saturday evening, we were at dinner and shown a table to sit at. We left our drinks receipt and some rolls on the table whilst we went to get soup. When we returned, there was someone sitting there and we kindly explained that we had been allocated that table. The gentleman told us that he had been sitting there for a while (we found out later that he was there first but when he went to get his sweet, the table had been cleared, changed and given to us). Miguel, a waiter, called over Maria, who was in charge at the time to help sort out the confusion, she jumped down his throat and told us in a VERY dismissive way that we had to move (no apology, no nothing!!!). I was furious that this had happened for a second time and left the dining room to report the matter to the hotel manager who was not on duty until the following Monday. I saw the deputy manageress on Monday who gave us an apology (the first one!) and assured us that there were plans in place to make the dining hall run more smoothly in future. We were also offered a complimentary lunch and given our room, free of charge, for longer on our day of departure.

The location of the hotel is up a steep hill in the middle of a residential area and whilst we were ok to walk up and down the hill, there were a lot of older people that found it hard going and therefore stayed around the pool area every day. In fact, there were a lot of people that arrived whilst we were there that requested to be moved to alternative accomodation.

Albir's beach is all stones, large stones! (tour operators call it shingle) I call it boulders!! Hence, we didn't spend any days there at all, instead we got a bus pass (Bono Bus) for ?15 (20 journeys) and went to Benidorm most days. Albir is very quiet in the evenings too, so if you want to party all night, you have to go to Benidorm. We went on the bus (they don't finish until around 11.30) for 85c and came back by taxi for around ?8.

Overall, we REALLY enjoyed our stay at this hotel, we met a lot of nice people who were also staying there; Doreen, Shirl, Margaret and Shirley from Sheffield, Elsie and Ann from Burnley and all the others (they know who they are) and not forgetting 'Mad Meg' who was often the butt of most of the jokes!!!

Although the hotel has had a few teething issues, we would stay here again in the future and would recommend it to anyone wanting a holiday in a more quieter setting to Benidorm on the Costa Blanca.

My/Our Holiday Review:

alfas beach was a last minute holiday, booked 6 days before we went. We couldn't have asked for a better hotel half board in August for 1 week £597 for a family of three. We couldn't get self catering for that.

The hotel had only been opened for 6 weeks but the four star was true to its word. Air conditioning through-out including bedrooms, free safety deposit box, fridge, tv, hairdryer, lovely comfortable rooms, decor excellent, service excellent, cleanliness is of a very high standard. Good size outdoor and indoor pools although indoor pool freezing but great if you get too burnt. They had a gym aswell but we didn't use it. They have rules for the sun loungers by the pool you aren't allowed to put your towels down to reserve them which we thought was an excellent idea it then gave other people a chance to sit by the pool.

The food was ok not very hot though and there was alot of the same food every day. We decided to have lunch instead of dinner as we felt the meal times at night were a bit late as they started at 20.00 - 22.30. Be prepare to queue at busy times as there isn't enough tables and chairs for everyone in the dining room. The bar is lovely and the wine is cheap but coke, sprite etc is 1euro50 for a small bottle.

Very low key entertainment and nothing for children unless they are like our daughter who just wants to play at the pool all day. There is a small shop next to the pool that opens for a few hours during the day selling lollies and juice but no snacks, crisps etc.

The hotel is up a hill not to steep but no good if you have difficulty walking, it takes about 5mins to walk down to the selection of shops and the supermarket at the bottom of the road. If you turn right at the bottom of the road and follow it along and round the corner you find the shingle beach and the promenade which is lovely it has a selection of english and spanish bars. Altea is the next town just 7mins in the bus which cost 85c no matter where you go it is very nice especially at night and there are very nice restaurants.

We would highly recommend this hotel.

My/Our Holiday Opinion:

What an excellent Hotel, location is on the beach road, feet from the sea, although it is a shingle beach not sand. The staff are extremely helpful and they even kept the restaurant open for us to have a meal as we arrived late. Rooms are very spacious and have a seating area as well as the beds, with a large bathroom also. during the time we were there which was only a short period unfortunately the guests ages were quite mature so this hotel is not for the young and noisy. Evening entertainment is a duo but we did also have a magician on the saturday night we were there. We were half board and the choice and quality of the food on offer was excellent.Overall the Hotel is spotless and has a superb position.

The resort itself is also spotless and not load and noisy like Benidorm, but there are still plenty of bars and restaurants to eat at. There is a Chinese restaurant opposite the reception of the hotel which served very good food at a reasonable price also there is a Rib bar just along the road a few yards(left as you come out onto the beach road)which was also very good.

Overall the Hotel and Resort we found to be excellent although a bit on the quieter side (which is what we liked) I would thoroughly recommend either.

Arrival at Kaktus Albir the reception staff were quite helpful, we had emailed the hotel prior to our arrival asking for a sunny quiet room , we produced our email copy and the manager came out to see us and we were given a lovely sunny room on the top floor, and the view of Albir Bay was superb. As this hotel had only been opened just under two years, it was very clean and spacious, we complained twice to reception that the air conditioning wasn't on and they told us it is not put on until June and we were there the last nine days of May.

The dining room was big and well furnished, but the first night we were there the food was appalling and we thought what have we let ourselves into having booked half board; the food did get better especially at the weekends when the Spanish arrived for a weekend break (I wonder why?). The restaurant staff were very helpful and cleared plates away as soon as you had finished, the head waiter was surly and it was an effort for him to do things for you, he was the only poor member of staff.

Albir itself is a very pleasant resort with a lovely promenade and shops and bars, they are just a short walk from the hotel, the beach was pebbly but you could find patches of shingle to put your sun bed on, we thought the position of the hotel was second to none it is a perfect resort for young families and the more mature couples.

We would recommend this hotel to anyone,

Just returned from Kaktus Hotel and I have to say the Hotel is beautiful and could not be faulted on any front. We had booked on a 4 night break and were 4* allocated on arrival and could not have asked for a better hotel. The only down side was the age group of the other holiday makers. We are young at heart 40 year olds and were by far the youngest people there.

The hotel sits right on the beach with beautiful views but there wasn't any sand the whole beach is pebbles which would be no good for children or the elderly as it was very hard to walk on. The hotel had entertainment on every night but again geared for the older person. Benidorm is a 45min bus ride away but at only 85 cent per journey is well worth the trip as the beach is lovely and its very lively with plenty of shops + bars etc. Kaktus Hotel superb the resort of Albir too quiet for us.

Stayed at the Oasis Albir in May this year. The hotel was of an extremely high standard. It just opened 6 weeks prior to us arriving. It is a beautiful hotel, the rooms are luxurious and extremely comfortable - all you would expect from a brand new 4* hotel. The restaurant was very nice and the food was excellent. Stayed on a full board basis and enjoyed the food every day. The restaurant does get busy at night and if you don't go reasonably early you have to queue. There are a couple of entertainers although not that good. One night we had live music and dancing which was fun. Not many Brits at this hotel, seems to be a Spanish holiday resort.

Albir is just outside Benidorm (about 5/10 minutes drive). Quiet resort with beach. Benidorm is really good, bery clean and lovely beach.

Would thouroughly recommend this hotel, although not for those who are looking for a lively resort.

My/Our Holiday Review:

The Playa Albir Oasis Hotel is a very high standard four star. The hotel was built in 2003 so it was all very new. When arriving at the hotel the reception is very grand with lovely indoor glass lifts. In the reception area you also have a very nice cocktail bar decorated with really nice modern furniture. Downstairs there is also a large hall that has entertainment in the evening and you can play cards / have cups of coffee in the day. It is quite nice to stay in a hotel that is decorated to a modern standard (i.e. no plastic chairs or flowery curtains in this hotel).

The rooms are lovely, all decorated to a modern high standar. The bathroom was very nice and extremely clean. The beds are comfortable and there is heating/air conditioning in the rooms. There is also Sat. TV and a radio in your room along with a fridge which is a nice touch for staying in a hotel. We went in March which seemed to be granny season so it wasn't lively but at least we had no riff raff in this hotel. The facilities are very good, lovely big pool outside (although it was too cold to go in at this time of year). Indoors we had a nice heated pool with Jacuzzi (this was empty so we had the whole thing to ourselves). There was also a gym if you felt you needed to burn the calories off.

I don't think I am the best person to comment on food as I am extremely fussy but as far as hotels go the food here was quite good. We stayed on a half board basis. Breakfast was nice, eggs, bacon, sausage, beans etc. along with cereals, fruit, toast etc. Good choice for breakfast. Dinner was more dissapointing as they only seemed to have Veal, Hake & Pork. Lots of things on offer like bread, ham, cheese, Spanish Omellette and always really nice fresh fruit and lovely desserts. Only comment on the food is that the veg was quite cold i.e. the sweetcorn etc. Also do take a Spanish phrase book as nobody really speaks English and you have to know a little to get by.

As for the resort itself Albir is a very nice place, lots of shops, bars, restaurants etc. even a MacDonalds. Lots of nice Cafe's too, check out Ola's along the front for a nice coffee and they also do great food in there too at good value for money. We walked along the promednade along the front up to Altea on most days, this is a 45 min. walk there and then 45 min. walk back but really nice. Altea is a great little place with tiny cobbled streets and a lovely little church perched on the hill, beward though as it does get quite tiring climbing to the top!!

The beaches in Albir are peebles and then go onto larger stones but beware as lots of people let their dogs poo all over the beach and on the pavements so watch where you are walking.

The only thing I would recommend is to avoid going to Benidorm, what a dump!! Think London Docklands on the beach. The place is horrible, we got a cab there and came straight back, it is the king of tack and nasty so I would definitely stay away.

As for nightlife, well we went in March so it was going to be quiet at this time of year. They were opening a Cafe Del Mar there when we were leaving which would probably be very good (you know the same as Ibiza).

I can definitely recommend the resort, lovely place. Remember to take a jumper and a coat for March though as it can get chilly. About 17c in the day and around 9c at night.

This was a VERY last minute short break for us (booked day before we were going) and HotelConnect could not have been more helpful. I picked 2 hotels - Albir Playa and Rober Palas - and they managed to book us into the second. It is in a great location, very close to the centre of Albir. Staff are very friendly, rooms spotlessly clean. We asked for extra pillows and they arrived immediately. It also has it's own car park. We booked bed and breakfast (good variety at breakfast) as I'd heard there is a good choice of restaurants in Albir, which is definitely true. Try Mister X (just outside Albir, signposted from the Albir-Altea road, but you'd need either a car or taxi to get there) and also the Steak/Ribs place on the "front" (think it's called Country Ribs) - both fantastic places to eat. Also had fresh sardines at lunchtime at Ca Blau on Avenue d'Albir and for 3.80 euros, excellent value!

We loved Albir and would definitely go again. Would also stay at Rober Palas again. Only downside is the pool area - although lovely with a very unusual "cascading" pool, it is fairly small and lacking in sunbeds. I think it would be very busy and cramped during the high season.

My/Our Holiday Review:

We booked up at the Hotel Castillalicante after reading about the resort and hotel

All in all, we were disappointed. I'm not sure if it was because we were expecting too much, due to our previous beach holiday in Mallorca (see Beverly Playa review) - or because neither of us had been to the Costa Blanca before.

The resort was very similar to the part of Aludia I'd been to (Alcudia Beach Hotel) - across a main road to the lovely beach and set amongst a residential area with a small strip of shops not far from the hotel. The difference between Alcudia and San Juan was the fact that it was all tall tower blocks rather than smart houses. Standing on the balcony, you could often have a neb into the local apartments!! We didn't see anything we shouldn't have though!

We had booked bed and continental breakfast on the website for what seemed a good deal.

We hired a car and using a map from the hotel web-site (and the handy signposts on the main roads directing you to certain hotels), we found the general area - but not the hotel. We found it in the end, but not a parking space. After squeezing into a small gap, we trundled down the road to the hotel and checked in. It turned out that parking was available for 7euros a night and leaving it on the road would lead to a fine. I paid the 7euros.

As we expected, the resort was quiet and the shortage of café's that were open, lead to us having a meal in the hotel bar.

The waiter spoke no English and us, very little Spanish - but eventually we managed to get some sort of tapas dish with a beer each for 9euros. It was tasty - but not filling. It consisted of potato, tuna fish, egg, peas and had a vinegary taste.

We slunk off to bed and had an early night.

Breakfast was poor. We went back to the bar and were asked if we would like tea or coffee, orange juice and either toast or croissant.

That was it!!

It was the same every day. We found that they had opened up the restaurant - but for some reason we weren't allowed in there.

During the day we had a wander around the resort and found a little bakery that made lovely bread. We also found a lovely café on the beach called Casa Domingo. The service is quick and the prices reasonable. 7 bottles of beer (between the two of us), paella for two and a huge plate of king prawns came to 30euros. It filled up quickly over lunchtime with Germans and locals, so get there early.

We didn't have an evening meal there, so I can't comment on what it is like on a night.

I am guessing it will be different in the summer months too.

We explored the wider areas, using the car and visited the Caves de Canelabra (not suitable for disabled or those with walking difficulties) and further down the coast towards La Manga/Cartenega.

We found a Caprabo supermarket and would recommend it if you want to try local/international food at reasonable prices. The beer and wine are cheap!! The fresh bread and cakes are nice too!!

This was a quiet resort and if you hire a car - ideal for visiting the places around the region.

I am not sure what it would be like as part of a package tour or without a car as you would be limited (even if all the bars were open) as to what you can do.

We found an English bar (The Pink Flamingo or something) and had a look in. We had a swift half and left. It was smelly, dusty and not nice. The food was kept in those hot trays you get in chip shops that the peas, curry and gravy are left in....

Despite the breakfasts, the hotel was nice and clean and the staff friendly. Be aware that the pool isn't heated (or it wasn't turned on) and was very cold!!

We might have felt differently, if this was our first visit abroad. We wouldn't go back - but all in all, apart from the breakfasts - there was nothing majorly wrong with the San Juan. It just wasn't our cup of tea.

Just arrived back from these lovely apartments and a very nice typical proper Spanish town. First the apartments, they are only one year old and are the best apartments that i have stayed in all of the one's that i have ever rented, it really is just like home, all the things that you need at home in the kitchen are there as in full cooker and microwave, fridge, toaster, sandwich maker, kettle, lots of pots pans etc, ironing board and iron.

Two big bedrooms one with a king size bed and en-suite plus balcony, one with two singles, plus seperate bathroom and wc, both with fitted wardrobes.Living room with leather settee thats turns into a double bed, dining table with four chairs,tv, dvd,cd. Patio doors on the end of the living room lead to another balcony that overlooks the pool, the people next door have moved from the uk to live there permanant the only difference between us and them was that we had a telly and they had'nt got one yet ! The town of almoradi is a typical spanish town, no masses of souvenier shops,no time share plonkers to bother you, just a spanish town that really welcomes visitors, We went to a spanish bar called El Casica most of the time while we were there as thats where we got the best welcome and the best food and drinks, On the way into town It's on the left just before the chinese, there is some brit pubs as a few brits have settled there so they cater for the brit locals, nothing fancy just good old hospitality and its very cheap (and Quiet) as its not on the tourist trail so you pay the same as the locals do.

15 minutes East is Guardamar, its where the Spanish go to visit the seaside, the beach is excellent and usually empty so you wont be fighting for a space to relax, its a natural beach not man made, so its just like the beaches at home with sand, not shingle, and very safe for kids as it slopes gently into the sea.

30 minutes N E is Alicate so if you want noise and hustle and bustle go there.

We will be going again as it really is a lovely place to go to and see the real Spain, like it use to be.

The Mirador De Las Palmeras are private apartments that we rented from the internet, Sleeps Six, One bedroom with a king sized bed and en-suite, one with twin beds, and bed sette that sleeps two.Ther is a living room, full kitchen with all mod cons, two balconies one of which is off the main bedroom, communial pool, tv,dvd player,hi-fi,all power used is in with the rental, (no meters).

The apartments are one year old and are in immaculate condition, as soon as we got out of our car we could smell the orange groves that are to one side, as you are on the edge of Almoradi but only five mins walk from the town centre.

The town itself is a small proper spanish town that has not been spoilt by

tourism, there is a few english bars that cater for the english that have settled there to live, which i think says a lot about the town. We went into quite a few of the bars but found the best one was a spanish bar called El-Casica which is on the right hand side with a heinekin sign above the door as you walk into town just

before the chinese, the drink and food was very good, as they cater for the people of the town, not tourist who only stay for a few days so it has to be good, the people in there are very friendly and welcome visitors.

Fifteen mins away to the east is Guadamar where you will find a fantastic beach, it is not man made so its proper sand just like home, thats where the spanish go to relax on the beach so it has to be good, and it is.

Almoradi is a excellent place to go to relax as it is out of the way, but near to the best beach in the area and thirty mins away from Alicante.

We will be going back there in the future without a doubt.

Mirador de las Palmeras is a brand new apartment complex that opened May this year. They are very spacious sleeping up to 6 in some apartments and fitted out with equipment to owners requirements, the one we stayed in had a TV and DVD player but no channels(but I don't go on hol to watch TV)They also had a Nintendo 64 which my kids loved. there was a lovely pool which was the perfect temperature which we used for cooling off as it was so hot. Most nights we walked into Almoradi for something to eat and there was plenty of choice from traditional Spanish, Chinese and English for the die hards. The nearest beach is 10 mins drive at Guardamar del Segure which was absolutely beautiful we spent a day there and found loads to do, including a fun fair with trampolines in the evening.

We will defiantly go again.

My/Our Holiday Review:

Flew With Monarch excellent. Picked up car at airport and with the aid of our sat Nav found our accomodation. The hotel is built in the hills surrounded by other private villas. To get to this rather exclusive development you have to go through security ( man in a box who vets you! )

The hotel is unobtrusive in the way it has been designed and it blends in well with the rest of the villas.

We checked in and were given a junior suite. The room was absolutely amazing. we had a separate bathroom which made our own at home look like a broom cupboard. There was bedroom, a lounge/dining room. 2 televisions one in the bedroom and one in the lounge and there was also a kitchenette.

Room sevice 24 hours if you wanted. sheets changed every day. The hotel was immaculate.

We had a balcony which overlooked the trees you could just make out the sea!

Food in the restaurant was similar price to here and to be honest it was good but nothing to rave about.

Breakfst was a huge choice and good, plenty of it if you so wished.

Unfortunately while we were there it rained for 4 days solid, high winds etc so we flew home earlier.

The resort of Altea is quaint and picturesque.

There is an indoor pool, but you have to wear a swim hat for which you will be charged 3 euros. There are 5 other outdoor pools. In the height of the season I would imagine this would be glorious.

There is a spa attached to the hotel and as the weather was poor we booked treaments and lavished ourselves!

Would recommend this hotel but it is suitable for couples. The hotel is out of the way so you would need a car.

If you want a little luxury go for it!

My/Our Holiday Review:

Firstly - the Hotel is fantastic, I travel a great deal and stay in very good hotels and this is as good as it gets. We had a junior suite which had a very large balcony, the bathroom had to be seen to be believed - very nice. We had inclusive breakfast which was superb and dined in once which was very good (about 60 Euros per head), however I took 2 teenagers who were bored to tears. There are very few English here, mostly the "rich set" from Madrid - when they wear Versace to the pool, you know it hasnt been aquired at North Weald market. So we had to go out every day to keep the boys occupied - the hotel then just became a very expensive base to operate from.

I would recommend this to couples looking for a pool holiday or those with very young children, but if you have older kids I would suggest going somewhere else (btw - the staff couldnt have been friendlier or more helpful.)

My/Our Holiday Review:

We decided to take a vila holiday for a change to relax in luxury with our own pool. After trawlling through the hundreds of possibilities we decided to book Villa Casa Mwinda as it appeared to fit the bill perfectly.

Altea is advertised everywhere as a sleepy unspoilt traditional town with a good variety of bars and restaurants. What they don't tell you is that Altea is the red light district of the Costa Blanca and the approach to the villa took you straight through the middle of it.

We were stopped on two occasions trying to get to our villa on our arrival by both male and female prstitutes and only managed to get rid of them by driving straight at them almost running them over. So much for a nice family location.

However this was not the worst experience that we had. On arrival at the villa it was apparent this was no luxury accomodation. It was advertised as having air conditioning but on opening the doors the heat hit you as there was only one small unit in the lounge and none anywhere else in the villa.

Also the smell of the place hit you straight away and it was obvious it hadn't been cleaned. The kitchen still had food remnents everywhere and the lounge floor was covered in food etc. Worse still came when we inspected the bedrooms as there were hairs from the previous guests still in the beds and on the pillows as well as saliva stains etc. It was obvious the linen hadn't been changed. The smell was also overpowering and can only be described as how a very old damp house that hasn't been lived in would smell like. The bathroom looked quite presentable until we looked up and noticed the cobwebs everywhere with huge spiders in them and the towels provided were old and rough.

At this point I decided there was no way we could stay here and contacted the booking agents. They were extremely helpful and managed to contact the owners who came straight up to the villa to see us. They said it wasn't as bad as we were making out but did agree it was dirty and hadn't been cleaned for some time and that the cleaner hadn't done her job. The owner asked if they could arrange to get it cleaned for us but we refused as there was no way it could have been got up to the standard that it had been advertised as. At this point we handed back the keys and left.

Unfortunately we tried for hours to find a hotel for the night in the area without success and spend it in our hired people carrier.

The next morning we carried on along the coast to Denia and found a lovely hotel called the Daniya at which we spent the rest of our holiday (see seperate review).

To the owners and booking agents credit upon our return home there was a cheque for a full refund with no dispute. However the experience has put us off booking a villa in the future.

We were very dissapointed with the Santa marta hotel the room was just big enough for a bed and a wardrobe. The beds were solid and so were the pillows it was very uncomfortable and dirty. We stayed there bed and breakfast and the breakfast consisted of croissants jam or biscuits and orange or tea, i was very dissapointed.

The surrounding area wasnt very nice, there are signs all over the place warning you about thieves. It was very scary walking around. The only good thing i could say about were we stayed was that it was very close to Barcelona zoo which was very good and an enjoyable day out, i wouldnt reccomend anyone to stay at the Santa Marta

My/Our Holiday Review:

We booked this apartment known as 'mi casa su casa' direct with the owners. The flights and care hire were all booked on the net. The apartment is fantastic and cannot be faulted. The cleanliness, situation and also the facilities would rate at least 4*. The area is called cumbre del sol and it is basically on the top of a mountain! The views were fab and the 'estate'is made up of luxury villas and 2 bed apts which have a fab pool to use (free and immaculate).

You will need to hire a car to get around but the apartments are only 1 hours drive to Valencia and 1 hours drive to Benidorm (depending on your choice of things to do)The beaches in the area are good and range from rocky coves to lovely sandy beaches. Be aware that this is in fact the 'real' spain so there are hardly any sunbeds for hire on the beaches. I would recommend this for independant travellers who enjoy an authentic break in spain.

We took our 4 year old and there are 100's of things to do for kids(eg terra mitica) but cost quite a bit. Food and drink is cheap and there are plenty of places to eat around and about the apartment. Moraira is a lovely town and only 10 minutes drive. Plenty of supermarkets and chenists within a 5 min drive.

Imperial Park - Calpe

Operator and Date: VillaSpain- July 2005

Opinion submitted in Mar 2006 by : 46, 26, 65, 5

Resort Rating: Very Good

Accommodation Rating: Excellent

My/Our Holiday Review:

The Imperial Park complex is described as villas but in reality they are very nicely appointed single level apartments. We had the two-bed T2. The apartment itself (dependent upon location) is not easy to get to. Your arrival at the complex begins with a drive up a hill to the main reception and once registered, you can get access to the service road which has cars parked along it and there is a single lift at the far end to get your suitcases up to apartment level. Our apartment was just above the service road and the pool is across the service road and then down two levels but there is good access via stairwells although it may be a slog if you need the lift. My 65 year old mother was able to cope without too much difficulty.

The apartment itself was very nice, if compact, with wood everywhere. It was very clean and there was a French window onto the patio which has a small table and chairs where we took breakfast and which gives a clear view over Calpe to the Rock. If you want a better view, there is a spiral staircase to the roof patio. The French windows and internal windows have a shutter for the night for privacy. The bathroom/toilet is small but adequate as is the kitchenette.

The complex itself is built in a terraced fashion above a huge multi-pool complex that starts off with a heated pool at the top and cascades down through approximately 7 or 8 unheated pools with bridges and so forth. My 5 year old daughter absolutely loved it although I found the water quite cold if only because I got dragged into it for a large proportion of the day. How do little kids tolerate it? All of the pool area is cordoned off until about 10am and then the ropes go back and it's a bit of a rush in high season to get to the sunbeds. Space around the pools is fairly limited so it can get a little crowded and you get the usual towels on sunbeds idiots. There is a notice saying towels will be removed but they aren't and many was the time I was tempted to chuck a few in the pool.

There is a high water slide which only operates under the supervision of the life guards (who patrol constantly) for two periods during the day and there is a little queue for that when it opens. However, it totally dissolved any fear my daughter had of the water and within minutes, she was flying down it on her own into the plunge pool at the bottom.

One thing worth getting is the garage parking. There is only a relatively short access road and parking is at a premium. For a modest cost, you can use the garages which are underneath the apartments on the service road which can only be accessed with a card. The garages are pretty tight as they face each other. we had a Focus C-Max and it was fine with a little practice although some are bigger than others. It keeps the car cool as well. Our apartment was above the garage entrance so it was great for a quick exit.

There are little things on during the evenings - a quiz, some Spanish flamenco dancers and some games for the kids. Oddly, the Spanish win most things and half the answers are wrong but hey, let's notv get competitive! There is a small bar and a food shop above the pool but we preferred to drive down to Calpe and wander along the seafront and eat down there. Calpe is a nice town and has two seafronts at an angle to each other either side of the Rock and it's quieter on the right hand side. The beach is nice although we didn't really spend much time there due to parking availability. Again, driving down to the right of the Rock(as you look at it from Calpe)is recommended as there is plenty of parking in the side streets.

Imperial Park is conveniently placed. Calpe is down to the right and the road to the left leads off to Moraira, Denia and Javea. Moraira is a lovely village where they have a funfair for the kids, restaurants and a marina where you can feed the fish. We also visited Denia beach which is nice although you have to wade on seaweed if you go in the sea which can feel disconcertig but it's shallow and safe. They have a big marina there.

We also visited Mundomar, Spain's version of Seaworld which isn't cheap but the dolphin display is very good and the views spectacular. We also visited a safari park near Pego which was great although it was a little hot and the facilities for food and drink were basic and few and far between. So we spent several days around the pool. It can be a little breezy on some days but the weather was great the week we were there.

We used CarJet for the car hire as they were pretty cheap. The car itself was fine but the child seats and booster seats were very poor so if you need a decent one, consider another company. We're going to try the carhire company on the VillaSpain link next time (we've booked a proper villa in Denia for 2006 through this company).

Overall, a very positive experience and a good holiday, only marred by a pub type restaurant down a side street opposite the complex (I forget the name) which served up a lousy meal of frozen lamb. Yuk!

I would certainly recommend VillaSpain and Imperial Park to anyone wanting a reasonably priced family holiday with a clean safe environment and a nice clean apartment furnished to a good standard. My only gripe is that our apartment was a little too far away from the pools and you couldn't see the pools so it meant that you always had to accompany children to the pool and stay there if they're young. For that reason alone, I wouldn't necessarily go back again but that's also because I never go to the same place twice! That's why we've booked a villa with a pool outside the door for 2006.

Pre-children, I used to prefer Almeria and the south of Spain for it's stunning scenic beauty and access to the Sierra Nevada mountains. The Costa Blanca is different, more commercial and hence busier and the roads are more congested (full of ditherers) but there is far more to do for kids on days out and for that reason, it's better for a family holiday.

My/Our Holiday Review:

We booked these apartments through the Travel Republic website and combined them with flights with easyjet flying out of Stansted from the same website and found the booking very straightforward. We hired a car from Victoria car hire on their website and again found them to be easy to book with and the car ready and waiting at Alicante airport.

(Very Cheap). The car was upgraded to a Renault Megane Scenic at no extra cost.

The trip from Alicante to Calpe is very easy and takes about 45 minutes on the motorway. The urbanisation Maryvilla where these apartments are situated are off the N332 road which passes by the top of Calpe. The apartments are situated in a delightful setting at the base of a valley. the area is full of lush vegitation and the gardens are lovely. The apartments are very quiet and are suitable for families and couples. On arrival we were allocated our apartments and we had to lodge a 90 euro deposit in case of damage to the apartment which is returned when you leave.

The apartments are basic but adequate with 2 double bedrooms, bathroom, kitchen, living room and balcony. There is a ceiling fan in all the living rooms. There are the usual items ie fridge kettle hob microwave. A safety deposit box and TV are available at extra cost. There is a nice pool and tennis courts and a gymnasium for guests to use. There is a restaurant on site and also snacks and drinks are available at the bar. When we were there the bar was not always open all day which was inconvenient but we then took our own drinks to the pool area and no one objected. The staff were polite and helpful and when we needed a phone for an urgent call to the UK we were told there were no public phones on site but we were allowed to use the reception phone at no cost to us, although we offered to pay. There really is no maid service as the linen is only changed once a week as are the towels and that is it. Having said that the apartments are cleaned when guests leave so are fine when you arrive, so if you keep them clean during your stay they are ok.

You definitely need a car to stay here as all shops and restaurants are several minutes away. There is a good range of places to eat in Calpe all to a good standard and at reasonable prices.

A good guide is 70 euros for a meal for four with wine in a nice restaurant, you can find cheaper if you hunt around and you will certainly find dearer if you wish. There are plenty of large supermarkets in Calpe and the prices are very reasonable for all the essentials including food should you wish to eat in.

There are some lovely little towns and villages to visit around Calpe and a trip to the mountains and Gudlahest is a must. If you collect Lladro figures, the shop in Guadlahest has the biggest collection we have seen anywhere.

Benidorm is only half hour away and well worth a visit just to wander and have a meal, make sure you visit a club with free entry and a good floor show, the one we went to had Shawaddy Waddy and the Beatles lookalikes and was absolutely great. If you want a good night out try the casino situated between Benidorm and Vilajoysa,it is two euros entry and we stayed from ten o,clock at night to five in the morning, if you go earlier there is a buffet on offer at a reasonable price and some nights a live show.

The Townhouse was excellent and facilities first class, very relaxing a real home from home. The Townhouse is in a secure complex in the Les Marinas area of Denia, some local shops but plenty more in Denia. Denia is a great Spanish feel town, maybe not too suited for the younger group. Great beaches and lots of first class eating places to be found. We didn't manage but apparently Al Gusto in Calle Colon which runs parallel with the Marques de Campo is superb for the special steak cooked on a stone. We hired a car via Sol-mar and this proved essential just for doting back into Denia and going a bit further afeild

My/Our Holiday Review:

After a horrible experience at the Villa Casa Mwinda in Altea (see seperate review) we travelled along the coast to Denia and came across this lovely hotel.

It is a spa resort and is at the top end of the 4* ratings.

We were shown to our room which turned out to be a junior suite with a pool view and a balcony.

The hotel is spotlessly clean with friendly staff and at just over £600 for 6 nights b&b represented excellent value.

Denia is a clean and safe resort with long sandy beaches and good shops and restaurants. It is extremely quiet at night with no evidence of crime or trouble.

We did visit most of the resorts on the Costa Blanca and would say that Javier is also a similar resort. Benidorm is what we expected with loads of lager louts and tacky bars. Torriveja was probably the dirtiest place we saw.

Terra Mitica is worth a visit especially if you have kids and was virtually empty on the day we visited, but watch out for the Spanish who appear to hate waiting behind you and try to push past at every opportunity.

Overall I would rate the Costa Blanca as a quiet area with not too much to do unless you like spendind the day on a beach or in a bar. A week was plenty for us.

My/Our Holiday Review:

We booked this villa after having had a holiday in Calpe last year at a villa complex which we enjoyed.

This year we thought we'd hire a villa. We booked this one which was a privately owned villa in Pedreguar. Technically, this is listed as Denia but in reality, it's a good 10km from Denia. We booked it for the privacy, the quietness, the private pool and the lovely view of the mountains opposite. A car is essential. Pedreguar is a little village with a convenient supermarket within a few kilometres.

We were not disappointed. We had a few hiccups with the keys and a padlocked gate which were sorted fairly quickly. The villa was beautiful and very clean. Directions to the villa were clear and easy to follow. the pool was pristine and the garage had sun loungers, chairs and tables for use. The cot we had booked was also prone to collapsing which wasn't good.

The weather was boiling. Too hot really as it precluded too much travelling to the beach with the baby and Spanish beaches are a little sparsely served with facilities.

The best beach seemed to be north of Denia heading out along the coast road. There are plenty of side roads leading to vast tracts of golden beach if you can put up with toilet cubicles and limited facilities. Denia itself is more a fishing port but the beach is accessible but more crowded at this end.

We visited Mundomar in Benidorm which is "SeaWorld" in Spanish and it features a dolphin show which is very good although the limited space can mean it gets crowded. It's not cheap though - 20 Euros for adults and 14 for children.

We also visited the safari park in the Sierra Aitana which is a couple of hours drive out of Pedreguar through the spectacular mountain scenery. We stopped off at Guadalest which is very pretty and touristy. The safari park is quite hard to find and when you arrive, it seems a bit run down. It doesn't have the swimming pool the guide books say it has. However, what a great experience. It's much better than the one at Vergel. It cost 34 Euros for the 2 adults, one child and a baby. You are invited to follow a feeding lorry which attracts all the animals to you and once inside, you can get out and interact with the animals. It has llamas and deer as you'd expect, horses, bison, zebras and so forth. Highlights are a rhinoceros and a pair of hippos which you can't interact with for obvious reasons but get a great close-up view of and 3 frican elephants which you are encouraged to get out and interact with and stroke. Can't get better than that. the cafe is a bit run down too but they supply food and the petting zoo is a bit lame. There is a monkey and a pot-bellied pig that wander round free wto amuse people. It was sad that not more people visited this safari park as it was a quality collection of animals (lions and tigers were in separate smaller enclosures you could drive round) but being high in the mountains, it's off the beaten track and it has suffered commercially for it's location which is a real shame.

We stopped off at a waterfall on the way back but you have to park and walk uphill a few miles so we abandoned that one.

As with last year, we found the best resort by a country mile was Moraira which is small and picturesque, has lots of parking and lots of restaurants and shops plus a small fair for the children. They also have a marina full of rabid fish. take aloaf of bread to the marina's edge and throw some bread in to see a spectacular free for all amongst the trout as they thrash and fight for the bread in vast quantities. That's free too. Calpe is also a nice place to visit but a lot bigger. Denia was pretty underwhelming. the only problem with Moraira is it has a small and very crowded beach.

We visited Calpe and had a ride on the "submarine" boat which has seats below the water line to allow you to see the fish plus you get a ride round the Penon Ifach rock. I also recommend that as you travel south out of Calpe, you turn left into Maryvilla and follow the directions to the top where you will get an absolutely breathtaking aerial view of Calpe and the Costa Blanca. It's not well known or signposted on the main road and we only found it by accident but it's stunning and it's free.

We also took the opportunity to visit the cave local to Pedreguar at Ben-something or other. Very impressive and unlike UK attractions, quite cheap. Well worth it.

We flew with ThompsonFly again who I would not recommend at all. The plane wasn't very good and we were delayed an unacceptable 8 hours on the return journey with the usual minimal information from two harassed reps who weren't being told what was happening. Having booked the more expensive Saturday flights to ensure we'd get back at 9pm because of the children, we ended up leaving at 3am and arriving in the UK at 5am. In mitigation, they gave us two snack-type meals while at the airport without quibbling. However, it spoilt the holiday and meant we had no sleep on Sunday. No problems with any of the other airlines.

I would have no hesitation in booking another villa. The property was a high standard (although personally I wouldn't pay over 350,000 Euros for one) and the deposits were refunded within 2 days of our return without any deductions. Villa Solana is a new villa on an uncompleted villa development. The pool was clean and warm. My only gripe was that it was very hot and the ceiling fans (no air con) weren't strong enough and had to be kept on all night. There is some building work occasionally on the other properties but nothing even remotely intrusive and it's not overlooked on the pool side. As a result of this being on the newer side, there are few occupied villas so it's very tranquil at night. Worth a drive up the other side of the developoment too where you will get another spectacular view across the valley below.

My/Our Holiday Review:

The resort of Gran Alicant just outside Alicante in good, lovely beaches and views. However in all the ads for villas in that area they all say the 'famous Carribassi beach', but what they don't say is its a nudest beach. However there are beaches that follow on from that which aren't.

Very good for being near the airport and shops in Alicante. Good weather. Some of the properties though are up a very steep hill and you should check that because you would need a car.

The property we rented was from the holiday-rentals com site. We didn't find it up to scratch and didn't even stay one night. It was freezing cold, although it had heaters when switched on the electric went off. the microwave didn't work properly, the television was fuzzy and there was a notice we found that said if you use all the towels then you would be charged for the cleaning (even though towel useage was included in the linen provided). The view wasn't as described and it wasn't quite like it said in terms of the description. The owner described it as home from home, but it was basic and bear, no homely things there at all. To give him his due, the owner did contact us straight away when we emailed to complain, but wouldn't refund any money so we had an expensive holiday, paying for that and then subsequently a hotel.

But the site we got it off holiday-rentals com is very good and we've used it before and never had any problems. Our advice, keep all the documentation, emails and take photographic evidence should you have a bad experience.

Denia didnt like as beach looked dirty. Recommend Guadalest and Font de Algar. Calpe is very nice recommend walk up to rock and beach very nice clean.

Some of my party walked up to top of Mount Mongo which they said gave excellent all round views but not for your average "rambler" as hard going. Had visit to Benidorm and this is much improved and more up market, clean than previous visit some years ago.

The only restaurant we ate in for the whole week was at Arenal Beach , Javea called Austriaco Restaurante & Cafe Wein which was excellent so we stuck to it!. The waiters there are very friendly, food excellent and very good value with a large choice.

My/Our Holiday Review:

We have stayed in many villas and this one was slightly below average. Very basic. Good views of Mongo, lovely pool. Car is essential. Javea is a lovely resort, we are regulars, yes, we will go back, but not to Montgo64.

My/Our Holiday Review:

Villa is very modern and provided everyhting we needed for a very enjoyable week.

Villa is situated a very short walk from a supermarket, only a couple of bars and restaurants in the vicinity.Lovely chinese very cheap and food was lovely well worth a visit.

The beach within walking distance was only small and the sea was a bit rough we preferred to drive to calpe only 5min drive from the villa the beach there was fantastic. It was clean and the water was perfectly clear ideal for the kids. Also a wider variety of restaurants and bars in Calpe.

The villa itself was spacious enough for all of us and the pool was large enough for all of us to get in together even with a few inflatables.

The only criticism of the villa is that there were no ceiling fans or air conditioning in the villa which was bearable in June but wouldn't have wanted to have been there in the height of summer with no air conditioning.

All in all a very enjoyable week was had by everyone and we would definately go again.

My/Our Holiday Review:

La Manga..the place the spanish go for their holidays is exactly that.hardly any english tourists.

La manga is a strip of land jutting out from the spanish mainland for about 20km.it has the advantage of having the choice of 2 seas, the Mar menor,a shallow lagoon and the med.both seas boast warm clear water, the mar menor being used by jet skiers and motor boats all day.the first 10km of la manga are fiarly built up with apartment blocks, shops and restaurants, the remaining land is steadily being developed.we booked a fortnight(in august) in a 3 bed luxury apartment in the genova building at Las Gondolas, about 18km along the strip.the apartment was spotless and very well equipped for the 4 of us with the well needed aircon in the lounge.the balcony from the lounge looked out onto the beautiful mar menor,a 2 minute walk and all the bedrooms looked out to the med, again a 2 minute walk.there was a small bakers underneath the apartment,a fruit and veg shop opposite and a small supermarket near to the mar menor beach.there were also several restaurants nearby within walking distance.a car is essential although there is a bus service which runs up and down the strip(very cheap) but is not very reliable, timewise!

there is a burgerking and 2 large supermarkets at the thomas maestro marina, about 5km from las gondolas and loads of restaurants as well as the ferry that will take you over to santiago on the mainland for 3.50 euros each.the ferry leaves on the odd hours and returns on the even hours.

overall great holiday and would like to return in about 5 years when it has built up more

My/Our Holiday Review:

We've always fancied going to La Manga, couple of mad golfers in the family. With the new flights from Glasgow Prestwick Airport direct to Murcia (15 Mins) from resort, we gave it a go.

Picked up our hire car from Murcia airport and found our way to the La Manga Golf Resort very easily, road were excellent.

We had booked our accommodation on the internet throught owners direct, a first for us. The accommodation looked like everything we needed.

On arrival we were very pleased, it was clean, spacious all mod cons and a real home from home. Plus the views from our balcony were terrific.

The second bedroom had a Play station 2 with plenty of games, a real treat for my daughters as this is one of the only things they don't have. There were plenty of DVD's. I know TV's don't appeal to everyone on holiday but it was nice to chill out for a couple of hours in the afternoon to get out of the heat, then back out late afternoon to catch the last few hours of sun.

We have 3 - 4 weeks in the sun most years and always (with the exception of Florida) stay in good quality hotels. What a change for us, this was the most relaxing holiday we have ever had. No need to get up for breakfast at set times, or put towels on sunbeds, or have to leave the pool at the most pleasant time of day to get ready for regimented dinner times of a hotel.

We wanted relaxation and we got it.

Even had a couple of fantastic BBQ's on our superb balcony with amazing views out over towards other villages and sea.

On site itself there is Golf, Tennis bike hire etc, some OK restaurants, we found the best when we left resort, and found typical little spanish seaside towns, eating in some lovely settings overlooking the beach or marina.

We would definately go back and I would stay at the same apartment. I would like to find somewhere as great and highly recommended in Italy or Portugal.

My daughters both enjoyed it and want to book again for our summer break next year.

My/Our Holiday Review:

This hotel is advertised as a 4 star hotel. In fact it is a converted apart hotel in a run down condition. Facilities are at best basic at worst poor.

Hotel staff excellent, food basic, rooms very poor. Hotel is between a run down dirty apartment block and a high rise apartment complex. Pool is hankerchief size with about 20 worn out loungers. Right on a dual carraigeway which you have to cross to get to the beach. Area is not for those who ever want to leave the hotel - which everyone wants to do! Entertainment is fourth rate - bar (which is really part of the foyer) would better suit selling burgers. Beware of having to empty the bucket next to your air conditioning unit! Don't go if you are old as you will have to get someone it to hang your clothes up.
