Opinion submitted in August 2007 by : mandy and steve 50 and matt 16 Resort Rating: Excellent Accommodation Rating: Very Good My/Our Holiday Review: hotel location is stunning. resort is lovely, even in august. Hotel not perfect but 40 yrs old and hey its greece, thats a comment but not a complaint, we loved it. Corfu town is beautiful, very venetian in buildings with a bit of paris too boot! but SOOO hot. Maybe best to visit in the evening if bound to school hols. LOcal entertainment night at hotel very good the greek trio were excellent, apart from that we preferred to wander in resort in evenings. Transport to hotel is different, our coach dropped us in resort at 10.30pm then it took 3 minibus trips to ferry us all up to hotel (cardiac hill we miss you). Laugh about it, better for the heart. Not having visited corful before we were amazed by the greenery (cyprus being barren in august) and all the beautiful v.tall cypress trees on the hillsides, WOW so tuscany in places. We walked up to Kato Garouna viewpoint above resort, took us 31/2 hrs return, was well worth it BUT please be careful if have small children etc and need loadsa water, stout footwear, hats and cream++++. Walks are in booklet in hotel library (thanks to Tracy local interest rep). We have one BIG HUGE COMPLAINT, one week is not enough, three would be good but would have settled for two, if family commitments had allowed. Will most definitely be returning, earlier/later in season and to walk more.To the fellow guest who dropped his egg on dining room floor, picked it up and ate it but left grease for others to step in, may your health have reflected your hygiene, YUK! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Aghios Gordios Hotel - Aghios Gordios Operator and Date: Thomson Holidays

Beautifull views best staff in any gold hotel we have been in. Food very good stayed in C Block and had fantastic view over Bay. Went on island tour (a bit pricey and long day) but well worth it. Cannot understand the bad reviews people must be very fussy indeed. Would go back again. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Aghios Gordios Hotel - Aghios Gordios Operator and Date: Thomson Holidays

Opinion submitted in December 2006 by : Dave & Sue, Beverley Resort Rating: Good Accommodation Rating: Average My/Our Holiday Review: this was our second time at this hotel and they always say you should never go back, but after our first time there we where looking forward to going back....big mistake. we stopped in A block first time, had a lovely big room, a superb view of the bay and beach, had total privacy on our balcony, found the food to our liking....shear bliss! this time we got block C had a shoe box of a room, a lovely view of the mountain side, could just see the sea if you hung over the balcony, no privacy on the balcony , looked down onto the sun terrace, or every one looked up at us sat on our balcony, the food was totally bland and lacking in choice if you where put onto the second sitting they where not replenishing anything that ran out. the entertainment was typical Thomson Holidays
we have now learnt our lesson and will not be going back...this was our opinion, and given honestly. you, however, may know differently. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Aghios Gordios Hotel - Aghios Gordios Operator and Date: (Thomson Holidays
Opinion submitted in October 2006 by : Jean Jackson 62 Tony Jackson 65 Resort Rating: Good Accommodation Rating: Average My/Our Holiday Review: My husband and I have just returned from our holiday in the AG hotel. We have spent many holiday in Gold hotels but this does not match up with the standards of some of the others. The food was adequate but not great. The hotel is tired and needs tidying up, especially the public areas and the paths require attention (when wet they are very slippery)and it was a nightmare taking the cases up to the coach pick-up area. Don't think that we are not active, we can swim the length of the beach, walk to Sinarades and climb the various mountains with or without the lovely Sophie rep. We also hired a car and drove up into the villages which was interesting! The best area of the island in October is around AG and northwards Paleokastritsa and Kassiopi. The east and south of the island is more or less shut down at this time of year. Would we go back, no, it is a long walk into the village in the dark and again it was more or less shut down in the evening. Views from the A block were fantastic, the scenery in the north of the island was great. The main roads are fine but roads through villages will need care, just go slooowly. Quibbles: Feel in a 4* hotel tea & coffee making facilities should be included as standard in every room. Bar prices are quite high and therefore we went out at night, however we were unaware that the season ended at the end of October and therefore places were closing, running out of stock. Mosquito repellant a must! Hopefully by next season the nightly aroma from the overflow will have been sorted. All in all though would definitely return to this resort, it is quite small not too commercialised, (not to eveyone's taste), will take walking boots next time and maybe choose mid September. Would also be happy to stay at the same hotel, because of the peace and quiet a definite bonus. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Aghios Gordios Hotel - Aghios Gordios Operator and Date: (Thomson Holidays

We were only there for a week, the weather was wonderful and the resort was quite quiet, just the one main street really. The Aghios Gordios Thomson Holidays
We were allocated a Garden Villa upon arrival at 02.00hrs - it was appalling (K block). The smell of damp was awful, furniture was falling to bits and all in all a really dreadful villa. We had to stay in this room for 3 days and we were then allocated another - better, but have stayed in much nicer self catering apartments. Suggest that if you are going to this hotel you at least try and guarantee a room in the hotel building, although some people thought they had done this, but were still allocated a Garden Villa. Seemed to be lots of holiday makers changing rooms. Corfu is a really pretty island and the resort of Aghios Gordios is

Corfu I feel I have to write to say how disappointing this hotel was. It
is a Thomson Holidays
The hotel situation overlooking Aghios Gordios bay is lovely and the sunsets each evening were wonderful but the hotel itself is very much in need of refurbishment. The common rooms in the hotel are very dated and the main lounge was very depressing with a wide screen TV on all day every day showing World News continually throughout the day and evening. Needless to say very few guests actually used this lounge. The hotel rooms were adequate but again this would depend on which block you were situated in. Block A was definitely the best position. The food was acceptable but repeated for the second week of the holiday. The hotel staff were very friendly. We had booked on a Thomson Holidays
We definitely would not stay at this hotel again and would certainly not recommend it to others looking for 4* service and amenities. Opinion submitted in October 2006 by : Bob Fox - Sheffield (47,45,16) Resort Rating: Excellent Accommodation Rating: Very Good My/Our Holiday Review: Arrived at our allocation on arrival hotel Aghios Gordios at 4.30am after getting off the coach in the village to be transferred by minibus to the reception, then the porter took our cases put them in a van and said follow me, which we did for about a kilometre to our accommodation block H5, our upstairs rooms were clean even had a fridge, had a full width but narrow balcony with good views over the bay and was all we could have expected, but the distance from the hotel was a sore point. We did try to change rooms but the hotel was full and after a couple of days our legs got used to the walk, as with the walk from the hotel down the steps to the beach and back up again. The village is small, just a street really, but with a handful of shops and bars was o.k. for our 7 night half board stay, glad we weren't self catering. The food at the Hotel was good, plenty of choice buffet style. We did the free visit to the A la carte restaurant and it was top class, a truly 4 star hotel. The beach was excellent, lovely sand, plenty of sun beds, the sea clear and inviting, a good job because it was so hot, though it did get quite rough the last 2 days of our stay. There are lots of bars on the front to get those refreshing drinks, prices were the same as the hotel large beer 3 euros, shorts 3 euros and soft drinks 2 euros. There are 2 sittings for the evening meal we got the later 8pm slot,
then it was upstairs to the roof top terrace to watch the entertainment
which was generally good. Natalie and Lee the resident band Intuition
were consistently good, but Lee should do the drums more often he's
really good on them. Then you got the main acts the travelling Thomson Holidays
The staff at the hotel were all friendly and helpful, the reps good and the waiters amusing and didn't expect being tipped all the time. There is a small shop in the hotel and prices compare with the village so it's a "shorter" distance to lug your water etc. The roof top bar closes at midnight and the bar near reception closes at 1am. This was o.k. because the average age was 60+. There is an internet facility 6 euros for an hour but do log off if you don't use your full hour or it just takes it, this was the only thing that our 16year old daughter felt comfortable with as the cliental was so old. We did the Corfu town at night trip which was 19euros each but it was a nightmare finding the return coach. All in all the resort was great, the accommodation better if you stay in the main block and we would go back again. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Aghios Gordios Hotel - Aghios Gordios Operator and Date: (Thomson Holidays

Becouse they do not take young children at this hotel you knew you could lay around the pool without yelling children (bliss). do try the sea breeze which sits right on the sandy beach great food and cocktails, on tuesdays and sundays they have a duo doing greek dancing and they are very very good they dance in fire and one of them sets fire to a table and picks it up with his teeth: then they get everyone to join in the dancing.up the main road there is the lemon tree and its a nice place to just sit and relax with a few drinks no loud music so you can chat away we give this hotel and resort 10 out of 10. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Aghios Gordios Hotel - Aghios Gordios Operator and Date: (Thomson Holidays
Opinion submitted in July 2006 by : Keith & Wendy Smith (54) Resort Rating: Very Good Accommodation Rating: Excellent My/Our Holiday Review: Well having just spent eleven nights in this fantastic hotel, I cannot believe the negative comments that have been listed. From the moment we walked into the immaculate reception area we were made to feel very welcome. Our room was spotlessly clean and freshly decorated, the beds and chairs were very comfortable, ample wardrobe space, adequate bath and shower facilities. The room had a nice balcony with sea views again with comfortable chairs. We have previously stayed in a lot of the gold hotels, but never before have we met such warm and genuinely friendly hotel staff who go out of there way to do everything for you, this level of service made every visit to the restaurant a pleasure. On our visit to the A La carte restaurant we were treated to an excellent meal again with a very high level of service. The pool and sunbathing areas were always maintained to a high standard of cleanliness and you could always find a sunbed at any time of day. There is only one thing to take into account that could spoil your stay at this hotel, if you enjoy going for a walk then there are a lot of steps down to the beach (there seems to be twice as many coming back up in the heat) or if you go the other way it is very hilly. This is one hotel i will look forward to visiting again. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Aghios Gordios Hotel - Aghios Gordios Operator and Date: (Thomson Holidays
Opinion submitted in July 2006 by : Mick and Sue, Newark,Notts, 46, 45, 24 and 20 Resort Rating: Very Good Accommodation Rating: Excellent My/Our Holiday Review: After reading negative comments about this hotel before we left for our holiday we wondered what kind of holiday we were in for, well we want to re -assure everyone that this a lovely, friendly hotel with friendly staff and stunning views, it is not for the less mobile as it is positioned in a cliff side with a steep hill to climb, there are also lots of steps inside the hotel, but the brochure does state this clearly, we have had an excellent holiday perhaps one of the best we have ever had, the food was glorious always plenty of choice ( although some people still found it neccessary to moan constantly) the sun terrace has been extended and there were always plenty of sunbeds available, the entertainment was good both day and night and the resident duo Intuition (Lee and Natalie )were great and lovely people as well. We would recommend Alexis bar for a drink as it sold a lovely greek beer called vergina which my husband said was a nice change from mythos. The Lemon Tree is a nice relaxing bar for a quiet drink, there is a couple of dancing bars in the village but apparently these did not get going till about 1.30am. Aghios Gordios is a low key resort, but there was just enough for us there , but my 20yr old daughter and her boyfriend could have done with more bars, discos etc after the entertainment at the hotel had finished. At around 8.45pm every night there is the most stunning sunsets. I would recommend Theo's boat trip we had a good fun filled day with chances to participate in a variety of watersports, all in all we loved The Aghios Gordios hotel and cannot wait to return --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Aghios Gordios Hotel - Aghios Gordios Operator and Date: (Thomson Holidays

We visited this hotel 4 years ago and it was fabulous then. Since that time the sunbed area has been expanded, the reception area has been refurbished, a gym has been added and the rooms have been re-painted. The moment you arive at this hotel it is WOW and WOW. You must remember that this is a hotel in Greece and therefore is not going to be absolutely perfect. Opinion submitted in August 2006 by : Alan and Marina Morgan Newent, Glos.55,50 mum morgan 80+ Resort Rating: Excellent Accommodation Rating: Excellent My/Our Holiday Review: We went to the Agios Gordios first in may 2004 and loved it,and it was our first choice to take my mum Joan Morgan from Salisbury to as a christmas present in may 2006 ,she also like us fell in love with Corfu, the resort ,and the Hotel. . All the hotel is kept very clean the staff really friendly and helpful and are a credit to the hotel. It is not a young persons hotel the average age on our visit being about 50,but this is one of the reasons we like it,the pleasantries between the other guests and the staff, and no kids or teenagers or the problems that go with them..The choice and quality of the food is first class with a mix of local and english dishes at each course,{note, think twice if you are on diet i could have come home a stone heavier very easily!!!!!!}. Yes,it is a good climb either up the hill at the back of the hotel to the main entrance or up the steps from the beach at the front,my mum is 80+and this was a concern but there was no real problem as long as she took her time and have a breather half way up,but i agree it is not in a good position if you have any walking or mobility problems. The village is small but has all the amenities ,and a relaxed feel.Stevens on the hill is a great place and our favourite the lemon tree to chill out in the evenings,no big screen telly or sad people watching eastenders!!! We think May early june is the best time to visit, the island is green and in bloom and not to hot.A gain the village does not attract to many younger people as there is not a lot for them todo no disco,s ect, there is music but not to loud. There is a local bus to corfu town but only one a day while we were there,i was told there are more later in the season.Corfu is a must in the evening we shared the cost of a taxi but check with the driver that its the same price for four, also eating and coffee,s can be a lot more in the town with a service charge added. Will we go back?,you can bet on it,my mum has already asked if ;we:are going back next year. The downside?the withdraw symptoms marina gets on our return home and back to work. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Aghios Gordios Hotel - Aghios Gordios Operator and Date: (Thomson Holidays

our room, on opening the door the smell of damp hit you right away, not suprising when the outside grond level is higher than the inside floor level, rising damp in the walls was over a metre high in places, one of the two wardrobes was black with mould, did not open the other one. The bathroom, its amazing what you can put into such a small space, but it did have its drawbacks, unless you where under four foot you where to big for the bath, owing to the position of the hot water tank standing below the shower for anyone over five foot six is impossible unless you bend your knees. As we only stayed there just over a day, paid to move, can not really comment on the food or entertainment, did venture to the poolside bar once for a drink, noticed the new roof on it on the way down, looking at the the underside from the bar i noticed the old roof was still in below, not the most healthy of materials to use in my opinion (38 years in construction industry ) But there is always sum good comes from bad,got moved to Paleokastritsa to the hotel of the same name lovely part of the island, hotel nice to --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Aghios Gordios Hotel - Aghios Gordios Operator and Date: (Thomson Holidays

We were worried a little after booking and finding loads of negative reviews on webitse's but when we got there we were very pleased with an excellent sea view room on the fron of the hotel. Our room was very cleaned and tidied up every day by the Maid with regular towel and linen change. 3 big beds fitted in quite well. The views are amazing and the Hotel with coming to the end of the season was quite quiet. The food was excellent with plenty of choice and a nice resturant.Full English breakfast and excellent local meat dishes for dinner. The service of all the hotel and bar staff was first class and nothing was too much trouble for any of the staff. Yes the beer is 3E a pint but the Town area it was a 30p saving! The Thomson Holidays
With the resort closing down and only this hotel with any guests we were restricted to night life in and around the Hotel. This was by way of Rep/ resident band and guest performers brought in and in our opinion was of a very good standard. The Production Team performed twice and an excellent comedian came out and didn't stop for 1 and 1/2 hours. This Hotel does attract older people, our daughter found the respect of all the guests making her feel welcome along with a few other teenagers with their parents refreshing. We were after a late week to "chill out" and apart from one rainy day the weather was good. The location is superb, peaceful and attractive. The steps to the Beach are not as bad as people make out and take most people about 2 minutes to walk. I know from speaking to other guests this Hotel is not the "flagship" of Gold Hotels but don't be put off by the reviews on these website's you might just be surprised. For A thompsons Gold hotel the food is as bad as it gets cold rice pudding, jelly, shepherds pie,and fish fingers being the orde of the day. The accomadation was below average and not four star more like three,it was clean but in need of some re furbishment and a lick of paint and the roof mending for when the next rain comes which indeed it does and there is nothing to do in the hotel at all when this happens . The courtesy bus is 12euros to Corfu and picks up at other hotels so cheaper by public transport and quicker. Apart fro this the views are magnificent to say the least and the resort is quiet with some nice tavernas and a couple of supermarkets Thompson reps were great and kept the place alive otherwise it would have turned into a prison average age was 60+ great place for chilling out but take a two week course on jungle survival before signing up. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Aghios Gordios Hotel - Aghios Gordios Operator and Date: (Thomson Holidays

Entertainment every night, a bit cheesy sometimes! Plenty of places to go in the town if you want a change. The beach was lovely and really clean. There are a good few steps down to the beach which some people were complaining about- it's not that bad! We got to the beach via a walk to the town (10 minutes walk) and onto the beach from there. Plenty of tavernas along the beach for drinks and lunch etc. Took the night time trip to corfu town for sightseeing and shopping which was well worth going. We fell in love with this resort it is very sweet and the people are lovely - 4 days after arriving back home we booked to go back next year, staying at the AG hotel again. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Aghios Gordios Hotel - Aghios Gordios Operator and Date: (Thomson Holidays

Opinion submitted in July 2005 by : Carol and Bob Verey (58,53) Resort Rating: Average Accommodation Rating: Average My/Our Holiday Review: The hotel is large but the lifts are small (2cases + 1person). The rooms are a good size and clean with good efficient air conditioning. If you ask for a fridge remember to leave the outer door open otherwise the fridge temperature is warm. The pool is quite small for the size of hotel with the usual early morning scramble for sun beds but usually a few vacant by 3 or 4 pm if you have been out. The beach was superb with beds available at a charge. The food was ok although we would have preferred less 'British' and more 'Greek', chips available each evening and always seemed to have rice pudding in the sweets!! The drinks appeared measured and people who drank vodka or gin could not taste any of the spirit. The beer was ok but little choice and often served in warm glasses. It is quite a climb from the village to the hotel but it gets easier the more you do it. Couple of good bars on the way up from the village we particularly enjoyed 'YAMAS', small but good drinks and Spiros was a good host. The local bus from the village to Corfu Town was good value and reliable [1euro 70cents each way]. The island tour [Gold] from the hotel is quite pricey but all who went on it had a great day out and the lunch, with Ouzo [included] helped. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Aghios Gordios Hotel - Aghios Gordios Operator and Date: (Thomson Holidays

2. There was still the full range of Thomson Holidays
3. The staff ratio was around 1 to 3 guests, so service was impeccable. 4. The supurb beach was empty, only 4 euro's per day for 2 loungers and umberella. 5. The organised trips were very quiet, so you got a better impression of this lovely verdant island. Only one note of caution! The hotel is ideally situated on the hillside and every room has a stunning view of the beach. We found our room very comfortable and spotlessly clean with very effective air conditioning. The bathroom was clean and everything worked. Public rooms were kept spotless, but we did find the drinks a little pricey. But as we are not heavy drinkers, that was no problem. We have never stayed at a hotel where the staff (and guests) were so
friendly and helpful. The reps were always cheerful in spite of working
so long and hard behind the scenes. The Thomson Holidays
The food was excellent with a good choice of dishes, although a few more fresh vegetables would have been nice. There was a wonderful selection of salads, plentiful and attractively presented. Provided you were not late , there was always plenty of room in the restaurant and the staff were quick and attentive. The village was small but attractive with plenty of tavernas and small super markets. The walk into the village is not for the infirm, but we managed it every day, returning to the hotel along the beach. There are two sets of staps from the beach to the hotel, one set being more gradual than the other, however we had no problem with either (although we took it slowly!) The pleasure of the beach and the sea is worth the effort though. Both are clean and the sea is warm. However the pool is pretty cold as it is in the shade until mid/late afternoon. We would recommend this hotel to anyone, particularly a young, active family that wasn't looking for frantic nightlife. We would certainly have no hesitation in going back again. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Aghios Gordios Hotel - Aghios Gordios Operator and Date: (Thomson Holidays

We nicknamed this hotel 'Waiting for God' as the average age of the guests were 60+. Although we are not teenages ourselves and have travelled to many countries, we could not believe how old guests were here. The hotel is fine, nice and clean and the food edible. However the trek down to the beach, about a millions winding steps and the route march into the village nearly killed us each day. Not surprising most of the clientele never ventured out. All in all a good holiday but we should not be surprised that a hotel costing this much would not attract younger families with children. Made the most of it and spent a couple of nights in Corfu Town taking the bus from the village and a taxi back. Great fun and vibrant, plenty of lovely shops and good restaurants, well worth a visit and such a change from the "hi de hi" entertainment offered at the hotel. All in all if the steps down to the beach and the uphill/downhill trek to the village don't finish you off, the coffee served at the bar will !! Enjoy !! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Aghios Gordios Hotel - Aghios Gordios Operator and Date: (Portland Direct) Portland - September 2004 Opinion submitted in Sept 2004 by : Alan & Linda Walkington (59,59) Resort Rating: Excellent Accommodation Rating: Average My/Our Holiday Review: Aghios Gordios is a pleasant, fairly quiet and friendly resort. It is very scenic. Although small, it has a lovely beach and plenty of tavernas and bars. If you are looking for discos and lively nightlife, then this is not the place for you. Our favourite place was Stevens on the Hill where our friends had the pleasure of staying. We joined them there nearly every day. We were staying at the Aghios Gordios hotel,(see below) but wish we had stayed at Stevens! Our other favourites included the Lemon Tree and Sea Breeze. ODE TO THE AGHIOS GORDIOS HOTEL We booked our hols at Aghios G A "Gold" hotel 'twas meant to be Atop a hill, oh what a hike, It turned out to be "Bronze" more like. The rooms were lovely, views divine, But, dear me, when we went to dine The food was plentiful, but dull The dining room was far too full. The breakfast bacon looked like "spam" And so we stuck to bread and jam. For dinner, shephers pie and peas Give us more Greek dishes please! The swimming pool was in the shade And rows and rows of guests were laid Packed like sardines in a tin.... You couldn't fit another in! More hotel sunbeds by the sea A long trek down, and not for free! Eight euros was the price to pay Two beds and brolly for the day. The entertainment team were great! The shows they put on were first rate But cost of drinks was just a joke Six euros for a rum and coke!! So "Average" is our final score Sorry Thomson Holidays

The resort was very good, lots of tavernas along the beach front and a few shops and tavernas in the village. The hotel itself was in a good location, on the hill overlooking the bay. However, the staff were not overly friendly, the food was basic and average and the dining room felt like a school canteen. The pool area was in need of modernisation and a lick of paint and was crowded. The room would have been good if it was not for the mould on the chairs and the fact that the shower head attachment had to be held by hand otherwise the whole bathroom got wet. The bar manager was moody and the drinks were expensive - UK measures. (we don't mind paying more if they are the usual bigger measures!) We therefore spent most of our time out of the hotel. Overall location was very nice, hotel was average. We expect something a bit more special from a 4* Gold Hotel. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Aghios Gordios Hotel - Aghios Gordios Operator and Date: (Thomson Holidays

The truth is although some guests said the hotel had lowered in standard from previous years it was still fine. Rumour has it that they will lose the 4 star rating next year to a 3 star. Food was hot and varied though lacked in alot of vegetables. The Maitre'd did lack the usual personality and failed to see guests to the tables at all. Waiters were excellent, friendly and could even dance! Bar staff, no problems. Sometimes a bit slow but going to the bar was often quicker. Rooms clean and tidy, no problems. Sunbeds no problem and pool - well, very cold!!! Thomson Holidays

I was quite glad at Corfu airport when they said where we were going, as the Aghios Gordios looked the best hotel out of the 3 BUT that was before we got there. After what seemed a never ending bus trip to the hotel we checked in and got to our room around 4 am (after sitting on the coach for around 15-20 mins on the hotel driveway as the bus could not get past some double parked cars), we were given a letter informing us of our meal times etc and that our welcome meeting was at 10 am that same morning, well as you can guess we missed breakfast and the meeting due to getting to bed at 4.30 am after a quick freshen up (didnt help as i had come straight from a stag weekend in Newcastle). So first impressions in the daylight: 1. The Room: Small & Basic (the norm in Greek hotels) but clean and had air conditioning and a small fridge. We had a sea view (just) over the rooftop of the building infront but could not see the beach and just had a view of a grotty courtyard, Greek toilet hygiene is still in the dark ages with a bin for your toilet paper as the drians cannot cope with paper (something the locals blame on the British as we originally did the sewer work in the 1960's or something, guess they dont know how to upgrade). 2. General hotel areas: clean and tidy 3. Pool area: reasonably large but in desperate need of some TLC as all the paintwork, tables, loungers etc were showing the dirt & grime from previous years and dont look over the lefthand side of the pool terrace as it resembles a council tip with all the previous years broken tables, chairs and loungers just thrown over. As we had missed breakfast we decided to take a walk into the village centre via the very steep steps to the beach, well the beach certainly wouldn't win any blue flag awards for its cleanliness, the main problem was there had been a massive storm the night before virtually from the UK all the way to Corfu (apparently we were the last flight to be aloud into Corfu that evening due to it and other flights were diverted to Italy) and this had brought up tonnes of seaweed onto the whole beach (a couple of feet deep), so you couldnt get to the water without going through this mess and where as further down the beach, hotel, tavern, bar & watersports operators were making an effort to remove the seaweed nothing was done at the hotel for the whole week we were there, i would imagine it was left purposefully to try and keep the hotel guests around the pool area buying the expensive drinks & snacks. The village is nothing to write home about and is just full of Tat shops, supermarkets and bars/restaurants, very much like some of our own grotty seaside resorts back at home. It was like a ghost town when we were there at the beginning of the season. So the 1st evening and our taste of the Food & entertainment: The restaurant resembles something from Butlins and was a free for all and i guess the guests in the know, knew to get there early to secure one of the few tables outside in the so called "Al Fresco" dining area. The food was plentiful but very uninspiring, service was fast and friendly though but drinks extremely expensive, with 1 bottle of water costing the same as 6 bottles from the shop next door. Well i can see why they call it a Thomson Holidays
So the review after a week!! Rooms : Basic but upto usual Greek (poor) standard, couldnt use the airconditioning during the night due to how loud the compressor on the balcony was. Pool : Needs TLC and you either need to be there for 2 weeks or up early to get the good sun loungers which get the sun all day otherwise the 2 week stayers get them. Drinks & Food around the pool are expensive. Food: A week of uninspiring similar food to be honest, you could see the previous nights unpopular dishes being re-incarnated as something else the next night and if you want to sit outside to eat, get there early otherwise you have no chance, they seemed to think we liked cauliflower & chips as vegetable options virtually every night. Fill up on the Greek version of the cooked breakfast (why do foreign bacon & sausage never resemble the UK stuff)if your going to spend the day round the pool so you dont have to buy any expensive snacks. For 1 night you are able to eat in the so called A La Carte restaurant, your time/day is allocated on arrival. This restaurant was infact just the poolside snack bar area and served a limited 3/4 choice Table D'hote (set menu) menu that was very dissapointing (A La carte is a large selection of dishes, cooked to order and individually priced). Bar: Extremely expensive drinks, using Uk measures, which is unfair for most of the guests that seemed to not be very mobile and wouldnt be able to make the steep hill into and out of the village from the hotel and as the village was so quite (no tourists) there was little point leaving the hotel. A round of 2 drinks was easily the equivalent of £10, so we had many early nights and it was not expensive due to paying the staff a high wage as the bars manager earnt the same in a month as most of us make in a week. Hotel in General: Do not confuse the Thomson Holidays
Reps : Only saw them in the evening entertainment and heard them in the day rehearsing (so you knew what to expect at night). Trips : We missed a couple due to missing the welcome meeting on our first day due to such a late check in but did manage to do 2, the cruise and the round the island bus trip and unfortunately both were dissapointing but the cruise was the better of the 2, it was only really let down due to the length of time you just seemed to be traveling in open water with nothing to see. I would strongly advise that you miss the round the island bus tour as: 1. it does not go round the whole island. 2. The tour guide has obviously set up some good commision on sales stops as there are frequent stops on the way and you are guided to a particular cafe/restaurant everytime where they are all waiting for you to arrive and take your money off you for expensive drinks and cakes, this got very annoying especially after our lunch stop in Sidari (Skegness/Blackpool with sun) when we seemed to then have 3-4 stops with around 20/30 minutes between each, many people just started to stay on the bus in the end as there was nothing to see where we stopped, just another commision based sale of food & drink for the guide who then had the "tip" basket out when you were dropped off. We wish we had gone on the evening shopping trip to Corfu town as many people who went on it said it was the best one but due to us being there for only a week we didnt make it as the round the island trip is on the same day and gets back too late to catch the Corfu town trip. I would advise seeking out other trips via sales offices in the village. We booked a Thomson Holidays
Our return flight was at stupid o clock in the morning (4 am or something) and we had to vacate our room around 11am the morning before, with the bags just stored in the tv room and supposedly there was a shower room available but we never found it. If you need to exchange any money at the hotel make sure you do it during the daytime as i tried to exchange some on our last night as we ran out due to the expense of the drinks and we wanted to leave the bars manager a tip due to how friendly he had been but they would not do it, so we couldnt give him a tip or get a drink and had to wait until we got to the airport to change some to get a drink. Would we go again?? Definitely not. So in conclusion I have been to Corfu before a few times and it was always a cheap and lively place to be but since Greece adopted the Euro the prices have skyrocketed beyond belief and is on par with holidaying in a decent place in the UK. Corfu is now a country crossed off the list. It would appear that its all about how quick they can empty your wallet and what appeared to have been a nice country years ago has changed to a barren refuse tip (its so dirty and scruffy now) with loads of part built properties on it, which had we been back in the uk everyone would have called it the pits!!, on the bus trip we passed through a resort which i had fond memories of from years back but it has totally changed now from the upmarket family resort to a very low class skegness type resort. Unless you like the Butlins experience with sun then Save your money there are much nicer places to go, i wish we had found this website before we booked as i would have looked elsewhere but i am finding it invaluable for information on choosing this years holiday which was going to be Malta but i am finding it very hard to find any decent reviews from anyone. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Aghios Gordios Hotel - Aghios Gordios Operator and Date: (Thomson Holidays
Opinion submitted in June 2004 by : S & J Fry Resort Rating: Very Good Accommodation Rating: Average My/Our Holiday Review: Don't bother booking into this hotel. It is overcrowded and according to other holidaymakers who have previously holidayed there standards have slipped catastrophically. The food is some of the worst we have ever been presented with being tasteless and obviously made with the cheapest possible ingredients. The restaurant ostensibly had two sittings but these were not adhered to with a resultant free for all every evening. There are no set tables for dining at so you are wandering round an impossible crowded noisy dining room hoping to find somewhere to sit. Add to that a lack of dinner plates every evening and you see it was not enjoyable experience. Would we go there again, yes but we would need an additional ticket - for the person holding a gun to our heads! Not good for people with vertigo as the bus journeys anywhere from the resort were quite hair raising with sheer drops at the side of the road, it also did not help when the bus drivers drove like loonies. The hotel often had areas smelling badly of sewage, our room did pong sometimes. Our room was basic ( rather 2 star than 4 star), the bathroom was a little scruffy and partly mouldy and the fridge did not work. The food in the hotel was not always edible and we found it hot stuffy and crowded to eat sometimes. any extra drinks or food in the hotel was extremely expensive so we bought in drink from a local supermarket instead. The hotels location was stunning but very hard work to get anywhere on foot, we saw lots of injured people who had accidents on the many flights of stairs. The people ruuning the sun beds on the beach were very rude and told us to move from that area because we chose to use our lilos to sunbathe on rather than hire one of theirs. We told them to push off. It turns out that the beds belong to the hotel, so you are getting ripped off for another 8 euros per day per bed just to sunbath. The resort was pleasant but very little to do if you are into partying all night. The reps were lovely and very hard working. The steps down into the Angelika came as a bit of a shock (especially with an overloaded suitcase) but by the end of two weeks they were a doddle!! its the best way to keep fit after all that good food. We had an apartment in the new block which was beautiful. Spiros, Angelika and especially Eda are excellent hosts and can't do enough for you. Go to the weekly barbeque as the food is great and the dancing afterwards is not to be missed but be preared to take part. Aghios Gordis itself was pretty quiet which was fine by us. We tried a number of restaurants, our favourite was Argo followed by Lithos and Alexis. Didn't try any on the beach front, we are saving them for the next visit which will hopefully be in 2007. Do visit George and Angela at Gee Bees supermarket, they are a mine of information. Do hire a car while you are there. We hired a jeep from Rolandos which is just down the road from Angelika. Having holidayed in Crete and Cyprus in the past three years, Corfu and especially this resort was the best! If you want a lively lads or ladettes holiday, this is NOT for you. If you want a beautiful town, gorgeous beach and nice restaurants on the sea front, this IS for you. The apartment were had (room 16), was modern, clean and serviced every day. Air conditioning was optional, but decent value at 5 Euros per day. The balcony was huge. The beds were comfortable (proper beds). There was a fridge, cooker (two rings and an oven) and ample kitchen storage and good range of utensils including a colander. The owners (Angelika and Spiros) and staff were very friendly and always around. The bar food was very good, chicken souvlaki was excellent. The weekly Greek night and barbeque is not to be missed, excellent food and really good value. The pool was a good size with free loungers and rarely crowded. The apartments were up a hill and with steep steps down from the road, so maybe not suitable for the infirm. The local restaurants were all good. Would highly recommend the 'sea food' restaurant on the beach and the 'lemon tree' on the road down to the beach. Evening meal around 50-60 euros for 2 courses for 4 people including drinks. The beach was excellent. Sandy and decent waves for added fun! We hired a car for the fortnight and wished we hadn't. We used it about 4 times and could have hired by the day. We took a trip around the north of the island and saw that we had picked the best resort by far. We also went to Aqualand (highly recommended, the best water park I have been to) and Corfu town, (really nice and very old and quaint). We also visited another resort, but again, not as good as this one. So, if you want a quiet self catering holiday based around the beach, look no further. We would definitely go back. We were in the older block as we had a 2 bedroom apartment and they don't have any in the newer block. It was ample, plenty of room, nice balcony and a kitchen which had everything you would need in it. I had a look in the newer block and the studios there are huge! Spiros and his family will look after you from the moment you arrive. The food at the apartments is really good, much better than some of the stuff we sampled in resort. The pool area is good with new wooden and canvas sun loungers and a good size pool. There isn't really a childrens section but there were a few kids there when we were and it wasn't a problem for them. The views from the swimming pool and bar area are fantastic. The bar area is of a good size with plenty of new wooden tables and chairs. There's lots of fabric umbrellas giving you plenty of shade while you sit a have a drink or something to eat. I was expecting the resort itself to be a lot smaller than what it actually was, there's enough tavernas for you to eat at a different place each night and the locals are really friendly. A must is a visit to the supermarket at the bottom of the hill at the bus stop, go in and be entertained by George. He's a lovely guy and even helped us out with a tour that our rep had messed up. I would recommend a stay in Aghios Gordios to anyone; families and couples alike - you won't be dissappointed. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Angelika Apartments - Aghios Gordios Operator and Date: (Manos Direct) Manos Opinion submitted in October 2006 by : A, D, I, M, Smith (43,40, 9, 6,) Resort Rating: Poor Accommodation Rating: Poor My/Our Holiday Review: the angelika apartments are nice if you get the new block, but if you want a two bed apartment then you will get the old block, which is very shabby,it seemed to us that they did not want young children in the new block, and that there are no two bedded apartments in the new block of which manos do not state, eating area was ok, so was the pool, except the childrens pool was no bigger than a foot bath,we had to leave two small children in a room with a tiny balcony with doors that do not lock, and a two ringed oven two foot off the ground not suitable for young and small children, the owner spiros pigis is the rudest hotelier we have met in twenty five years of traveling abroad, also they have no ground floor rooms at all, and there are far to many steps for children,of which manos fail to say once again concerning children the resort it self lacks any charm or charisma, small road in with a couple of shops and a few resturants, the beach was very good ,safe and very clean a must considering the boring resort, this also had a few bars and resturants a long the beach, very difficult to navigate in the dark, due to the lack of lighting and a foot path. the resturants were very substanard and well over priced, it seemed every so called resturant had the same food, all fried and no imagination, with hardly anything on the menu's effectivly the resort had closed. the aqua park is fantastic best we have been to, but overall the island of corfu is very dirty and tired looking, we have been to sivota, on the mainland, fantastic old greek charm, also kos town, elounda on crete and alkeys on zante, far better than anthing corfu has to offer manos are not taking these apartments next year (2007) and its not suprising,we paid seven hundred euros to came home six days early, something we have never done or even thought of doing in twenty five years of traveling, the worst holiday we have ever had, ie. the mosquito's are like silent assassins i have never seen so many people with bites and infected welts --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Angelika Apartments - Aghios Gordios Operator and Date: (Airtours Direct) Airtours Auction Site - August 2004 Opinion submitted in Apr 2005 by : Tina and Mal Lloyd - Swansea (45) Resort Rating: Excellent Accommodation Rating: Excellent My/Our Holiday Review: We arrived in the early hours, allocation on arrival, and were driven by taxi towards the mountains. We'd never been to Corfu before and I was very anxious as I had bid for the holiday on the auction site of Airtours/ Mytravel and spent the princely sum of £500 for a week for the two of us! We needn't have worried as we were led by Spiros (the owner) to a beautiful studio. Absolutely brand new and sparklingly clean. There was a lot of room, plenty of storage, compact kitchen area and fridge, TV and airconditioning, safety deposit box etc. All the utensils we needed and a little balcony to sit out and eat or have drinks. The bar and pool area are very clean and tidy, all the family muck in. The sunbeds, wooden with canvas inlay and sun unbrellas were never fully taken up and we used to swim every morning before breakfast and we were alone most mornings. We'd return from the beach to take a cooling dip and watch the last of the days sun go down over the pine forest. The family really do take care of their guests. The weekly BBQ is a must. We had a lovely Christmas card from them too! The apartments are situated at the top of the main road, there are plenty of supermarkets and retaurants to choose from. We went to Alex's, Sebastian's and Linda's. The bakery is a must for lunchtime snacks and near the beach is a sandwich shop which makes delicious fresh baguettes. Corfu Town is not to be missed - excellent for shopping and sightseeing. The beach is on the doorstep and we found a lovely patch to sit at daily with a very courteous beach trader, reasonably rated sunbeds and umbrellas and a very refreshing shower. The resort, accommodation and village people are all very welcoming. So much so that we are going back again this July for another week. This time we have booked direct with Kosmar as the flight times from Bristol are fantastic and include meals and transfers. We'll be dropping in to say Hi to Spiros and the family and take a dip in his pool, maybe even staying for the family BBQ too. All in all we cannot recommend this accommodation and resort highly enough, although the mozzies and wasps may put people off a bit. Take plenty of spray! A very relaxing atmosphere, enjoy being amongst the most friendliest people we have ever come across! Tell them Tina and Mal sent you!! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Angeliki Apartments - Aghios Gordios Operator and Date: (Airtours Direct) Airtours/panorama/manos - july 2004 Opinion submitted in Feb 2005 by : emma/danielle/janet - 25,25,30 Resort Rating: Good Accommodation Rating: Excellent My/Our Holiday Review: we arrived here on allocation on arrival, we usually go on a busy holiday but this was the only holiday available the day we could travel. the resort itself is fairly quiet even in july, it is ideal for families and couples. the scenery and beaches are fantastic. all bars and restaurants are family and coupl orientated. there was one bar called mikeys bar in the centre which we took over for a week and dragged everyone from our apartments to, the manager of the bar was a bit overwhelmed i think as it was the most people he had ever had in!! although it was quiet we still had a great time. you can make your own fun or sulk for a week!! the apartments we stayed at were excellent, spiros the hotel owner and his family were extremely friendly, i even got a xmas card sent by them!! the views of mountain from the pool is a plus point, there is a bar for drinks and snacks. they hold a bbq night once a week too which is was nice. because the accomodation is small, it means you make friends with everyone staying, without that i think this holiday could have been less interesting for 3 girls. the apartments have two blocks, one is old and the other is brand new. i would recommend booking a 2 bed apt as these are in the new block, they are more spacious and modern. all in all a fab holiday, definately for couples and familes. but anyone looking for a relaxing break, try it!! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Anthi Apartments - Aghios Gordios Operator and Date: Sunvil - June 2007 Opinion submitted in June 2007 by : Les Stafford - Petersfield (58, 55) Resort Rating: Very Good Accommodation Rating: Very Good My/Our Holiday Review: Aghios Gordis is a quiet resort, but with an good number of restaurants/bars. Not suitable for those intersted in discos or clubbing. The beach is excellent - very clean, fine sand, plenty of sun beds, not overcrowded and with the spectacular backdrop of the steep, forested hills. There is good bus service to Corfu Town, which is a must to visit and there are numerous organised excursions available. Public transport links to the rest of the island are not good, so car hire is a must if you wish to explore for yourself. If you enjoy a nice after dinner stroll, there is no promenade or side streets to walk round. The Anthi Apartments are at the top of the main (only) steet, five minutes walk from the beach and 30 metres from Gee Bees supermarket (yes, George is a colourful character). The studio is furnished in typical Greek style, spacious, well equipped and excellently maintained. The balcony was a pleasure to sit out upon, with a pleasant view and dappled sunshine. The Sunvil rep. was helpful, friendly and knowledgeble without being "in your face". Restaurants that we enjoyed:- Stevens (on the hill) - the best, but also Nikki's (my favourite),Sea Breeze, Alexis's and Argo. Service in these was attentive and friendly and the food good. For snacks (omelettes, gyros, burgers etc), Zorbas opposite Gee Bees is the best that we have come across. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Areti Studios - Aghios Gordios Operator and Date: (Manos Discounts) Manos - May 2005 Opinion submitted in May 2005 by : Tony Whitham 50, 48 Resort Rating: Excellent Accommodation Rating: Very Good My/Our Holiday Review: We have just returned from our first visit to Corfu and it was great. The studios we were in were up a slight hill about 5 mins walk from the beach. They were clean and the owners were helpful & friendly. We were on the top floor and had fantastic views of the village and the sea. You may find it handy to take a torch as the street lights can be a bit unreliable. We had use of the pool at the Irene Apartments just a minute away, which was clean and tidy. The only thing they asked was that any food or drink had to be bought from their snack bar. If you didn't want to use this pool there were lots of other places that offered you the use of there pool, all had the same rules about food or drink. The village itself was an absolute delight. If you want lots of really loud music bars, TV Bars & night clubs then this is probably not the resort for you. There are loads of bars & places to eat some with live music and would probably be alot noisier in July & August. If you have any difficulty walking you may have a problem with this resort as the are alot of steps leading to the apartments and it is quite hilly. We found a fantastic Taverna, Taverna Sebastian, which is set at the end of the street leading from the beach it's up a slight slope which gives you a lovely view of the village. It is run by Sebastian & Theresa who are very helpful if you need any info about the resort. They had a fantastic range of Greek dishes as well as some traditional english puddings. The bus service was a little bit hit & miss at first as we went there the first week of the season, but by the end of the week it had improved. We hired a car and found the island to be really pretty. We hired the car from Sinarades Travel, on the corned opposite Sebastians, and they were very helpful and managed to hire us a car even though we had left our licences at home. All in all this resort is lovely but not for those who want a really lively holiday. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hotel Belle Helene - Agios Georgios (north) Operator and Date: Private Booking - July 2004 Opinion submitted in Sept 2004 by : Anne Taft - Southampton (38,36) Resort Rating: Excellent Accommodation Rating: Excellent My/Our Holiday Review: If you are looking for a reasonably quiet resort without the loud music from bars this is the place to go. There are plenty of tavernas and a few bars where you can enjoy a night out mixing with other tourists and the locals. The disco is only open 1 or 2 nights a week. There is something for everyone here. The Hotel Belle Helene is situated on the beach. the accommodation is excellent all rooms are spacious with excellent bathrooms, all rooms have air conditioning, tv, hairdryer, mini bar and the essential balcony. you can also see the sea from all balconies without breaking your neck. there is a large pool with sunbeds and a bar serving hot and cold drinks and food. There is also a bar, lounge and restaurant inside. The pool bar is open during the evening and you watch the sea and the sunset, whilst meeting other hotel guests and locals. Agios Georgios is situated on the north west coast of Corfu, approx 35km from Corfu Town. The bay is horseshoe shaped and surrounded by green hills with a lovely sandy beach. The normal watersports are available on the beach. Car hire is available from the hotel. I have been staying at this hotel for 4 years and wouldnt stay anywhere else on Corfu. The hotel owners, staff and locals are friendly and you will always get a warm welcome. So, if you are looking for a relaxing holiday this is the place to stay. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Blue Diamond Studios - Aghios Gordios Operator and Date: (Thomson Holidays
Opinion submitted in May 2006 by : Mr and Mrs Jones 2,39 Resort Rating: Very Good Accommodation Rating: Below Average My/Our Holiday Review: We stayed at The Blue Diamond apartments for a week in May (2006).We stayed in room 9 which was a ground floor room with a small terrace bordered by gardens.Rooms were basically furnished but were equipped with a fridge and air-conditioning (payable locally). If you wanted to cook your own food you would have to have used a cooker which looked as if it had been rescued from a local skip.Kitchen utensils were poor and you would have been safe to let a toddler play with the kichen knives so blunt were they. If you are of a nosey disposition you will love these apartments;you could hear every word, cough, sneeze, belch and snore. Now I don't want to appear too critical so I will say that the public area and pool were excellent, well maintained and clean with free sunbeds available. The downside is the owner doesn't supply sunshades so in the summer months you would probably die of heatstroke/sunburn during the afternoon and we noticed that even in May the pool area was deserted between 1 and 4 so hot was it.There are numerous other hotels in the surrounding area which allow you to use their pool and sunshades free of charge. The resort itself has plenty to offer;lots of tavernas and bars but no discos to speak of which suited us ideally. Two tavernas which must be given special mention are The Panorama and Sebastians (hello,Mario). We have never been to two friendlier restaurants in our lives and the food was uniformally excellent. An example of price would be something in the region of 45 eurous for 2 threecourse meals and a litre and a half of wine plus coffee. There are numerous small sandy coves along the shoreline and the sea is shallow and calm making it ideal for toddlers and non swimmers alike. in short I would definitely return to this resort but not to these apartments. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Costas Golden Beach - Aghios Gordios Operator and Date: Thomson Holidays
Opinion submitted in July 2007 by : Maureen Philip - Fife (55,56) Resort Rating: Good Accommodation Rating: Excellent My/Our Holiday Review: This is the friendliest hotel we have ever stayed in. Dimitri Nina Spiros and their staff were brilliant. We got a bit of a shock when we got on the coach from the airport and set off on our journey to our hotel. Although the views were breath-taking up the mountains, we were glad when we reached our destination 1 hour later. If you want busy bustling touristy, this is not for you. Mcdonalds and Burger King havent found this part of Corfu yet but thats what makes it for us. We wanted quiet before we went on our cruise for the second week and this was perfect. We did go into Corfu town on a couple of trips just to do the shops and that was all we wanted. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Dimetra - Aghios Gordios Operator and Date: (Olympic Direct) Olympic Holidays- July 2005 Opinion submitted in Sept 2005 by : anthony- Oxford Resort Rating: Poor Accommodation Rating: Poor My/Our Holiday Review: It was our first vis |
