My/Our Holiday Review:

Arrived at the apartments for 2 week holiday at night. Bit anxious as to what the complex and accomodation would be like even though looked great in brochure. Needn't have worried as apartment v spacious and clean with separate bedroom and fully equiped kitchen area, best self-catering accomodation i've stayed in in Europe.

Had a sea view apartment as requested, views were stunning, looking right out over cliffs to sea. There are 3 pools on the complex and we found the one on the cliff top to be the quietest and more relaxed for adults. Mini market on site which v well equipped with international papers and magazines and fresh fruit, veg and bread daily.

Didn't eat at complex at all as so nice to go into old town which only 6 euros each way and plenty of taxis around. Lovely live music, stalls and bars and restaurants in old town, really nice atmosphere. Only went to new town once as just a long, noisy strip of bars and lights, could have been anywhere but Portugal! Recommend Bravo and Bailote to eat at near main square, and Cabana Fresca restaurant which overlooks Fishermans Beach.

Definitely recommend going to Zoomarine as absolutely amazing, especially if choose to swim with dolphins which you need to book as much in advance as possible. Slide & Splash also worth visiting, both children and adults alike.

All in all a wonderful holiday, will definitely return. Only negative point regarding apartments is that we found the majority of people on reception to be quite rude, abrupt and unhelpful. Had to complain to rep in order to get our door fixed as wouldn't lock and receptionist failed to see the problem and urgency regarding this and so left it unfixed. Also, were on night time flight home so asked from day one if we could pay to keep room longer than 11am. Didn't tell us til day we left, and even then said we couldn't have any room, let alone ours for a few hrs longer. Were quite rude and unreasonable about it. Luckily a v kind couple took pity on us and let us put all our valuables in their room and use their bathroom. Put a dampener on what had been a great holiday.

My/Our Holiday Review:

The apartment we choose was on ground level overlooking the main pool.

There are now 3 pools in total which 2 are great for the kids. they also have a childs play area, which was very safe.

The staff were great and could not do enough for you.

The steps down to the beach were fine until you had to come back...but were managable.

The beach was lovely and clean.

The New Town of Alburferia "the strip" (20 min walk)was like a glorified Blackpool but the "old town" (taxi ride 6 euros)was really nice and you could just sit and relax with the sound of the musicians / singers at most bars.

A visit at the Zoomarine is a must - pre book to swim with the dophins (over 8 yrs old only) 125 euros per person...but worth it.

The pool was cleaned everyday and was safe for the children. The supermarket catered very well, but was quite expensive for frozen foods (pizza etc).

They have just recently added a bus service..even though the taxi's are quite cheap too.

English newpapers were avaliable everyday.

My/Our Holiday Review:

We visited the Algarve in June 2006, Went from Birmingham Airport, checked us in very early which was nice. Flight was very pleasent, FREE in flight meal (So if booking through My Travel don't waste your money on booking the in flight meal as they supply to everyone) and leather seats!!

Faro airport was fine, Tour reps waiting for us when we came out and onto bus, so no confusion. Coach transfer was very tedious (took us through practically the whole of the Algarve, took over 2hours), so if you don't like waiting around, book your own taxi transfer from the airport.

We arrived at the hotel quite early, but they had no problems rushing the maids to get us checked in, also in reception check out the turtles in the water feature, really nice effect.

Room was lovely, away from the noise of the pool and we had a lovely sea view (From a distance). Room was very tidy, Air Con was nice. Maids came every week day, but im sure they had weekends off. Beware of what you leave lying around, my partner suspected they used her make up, but im sure it was nothing to worry about.

Found staff to be abit ignorant, and when they do things (like calling for a taxi) they asked for a tip, They dont like Germans, but we found Germans to be ok, but abit annoying at times!

Food at the hotel didn't look great, breakfast was completely over priced and vile. You can always get a exellent meal up the strip day or night, the strip was located about 10min walk from hotel, we were given wrong directions by a local shop to the strip (Go right when leaving hotel, not left).

The strip was nice and close, but expensive for what it was, cocktails were about 10euro each, beers were reasonably priced and night life is very much the same as the last place, the world cup was on and england lost to portugal, English were very violent that night, not a good outlook on our proud nation, but would reccommend to try anywhere down the strip for food as everything was good, but not much price difference to england.

The beach was lovely, water was very cold, not much to do but lounge around in the sun, sand was very dirty, watch where your walking(Ciggarete Butts). There is a man selling pineapples along the beach, try them as very refreshing.

There was lots to do with regards to excursions, we did the portugal night(45euro each) and it was exellent, you find yourself thinking what is this at the start of the night, but by the end of it your singing and dancing with the locals. The waterpark (22euro each) we went to was Slide And Splash, was good, but parts of it were abit run down, Zoomarine (about 25euro each) was ok, but found all the animals in minimal sized tanks and looked more like animal cruelty, would not reccomment it.

We did a Sun cruise (about 35euro each), was abit boring as all they did was take us to a little cove and sit there all day, fed us bbq'd sardines and salad. also there were alot of germans and they hogged parts of the boat. didnt bother us but other people were getting annoyed.

Photos Very expensive, don't have your photos taken if your not willing to spend 10euro a piece.

Overall the holiday experience very enjoyable, but make sure you take enough money, as not as affordable as other european holiday destinations.

My/Our Holiday Review:

We've been to this resort before and had a good idea where the apartments were. Although a 15-20 min walk away from the strip, we did'nt mind a bit of excercise. Had a one bdrm apart next door to our friends who had been in the Algarve for a week already when we arrived. Spacious and very well equipped, but do take a plug in kettle, took 45 mins to boil enough water for a cuppa, had to use the microwave to boil a cup of water from then on. Very clean, well run and maintained. Pool side bar excellent, air conditioned and reasonably priced as well as fantastic menu. Staff all helpful and friendly.

On the down side, because its pretty much a residential area, most of the surrounding properties had dogs that would take it in turns to bark, and most mornings a cockerel wakes up at around 6.30am.

All in all had a fab holiday and would not hesitate to book these apartments again if we return to the resort.

just returned from apartments sao joao area is 15 mins walk to strip or 15 mins walk to old town because we had small chldren we used the train a bit.

the apartments are not child friendly because there are steps up to apartment steps to the pool (no mention in the brouchure) there is a lift in apartments but can only fit one pushchair in.

also be aware of the 50 euro deposit upon arrival(no mention again)

the rooms were very basic and not very clean even though cleaned 6 times a week the bathroom was a bit grotty and the bath mat was disgusting!

The staff were very friendly and there is a very cheap supermarket at the bottom of the street PINGO DOCE.

the weather was fantastic and we met quite a few nice people.

Just came back from a lovely week in the Silchoro Apts. We only booked it the week before we went so we werent expecting much but were pleasently supprised!!

The apartments were really clean, a bit old fashioned but very spacious.

We asked to be moved on arrival cos the appt we were put in was on the ground floor and the terrace only had a wall half the way across we had a 20 month baby with us so couldnt leave the patio open incase he escaped!!!!! The staff at reception were really helpful and moved us to another room straight away.

Didnt stay around the apts much during the day or night, we used to go to beach at Pria D Oura.

I Did see the BBQ can honestly say didnt look that nice food had been cooked at lot earlier and was just left there for the people to help themselves(looked very dry)

I would recomend these appartments to anybody young or old & also families

Have a good time!!!

My/Our Holiday Review:

We had a large 2 bedroomed apartment which also had 2 bathrooms(very useful if you have 2 daughters), basic but clean.

The kids loved the pool although it was a little cold for us and we only managed to get in once. The hotel bar and snack bar were very reasonably priced if you didnt fancy a walk to the strip, costing around 35 euros to feed 6 of us.

We had read previous reports before we went and looked for Coconuts and Tom and Jerrys, both were very good especially the latter. Thank you.

The only trip we did was to the water park(splash and slide) costing 104 euros in total(3 adults,3 children), the kids loved it and we were kids all over again! The black hole was fantastic, went on around 7 or 8 times.

The weather was great for the end of October, only one day of rain. Would definately go back again but without the kids, to explore the beauty of the Algarve.

My/Our Holiday Review:

Our second time to the Algarve and after almost a 2 hour transfer from the Airport which made us hot and grumpy, we arrived at the Silchoro Apartments. A very high rise block - not what we are used to and found ourselves on the 7th floor. If you don't like heights, ask for a lower floor. The apartments were very basic. We hadn't ever been in a studio, so sleeping on the sofas was a bit strange.

The apartment was spacious and had a bigger than average fridge, which is great if you plan to eat in... but we never did and only put our drinks in it. First impressions were disappointing, but as always, we didn't let it put us off because we spend very little time in our room.

The swimming pool is massive and spotlessly clean. Loads of sunbeds and for 1 euro, you can hire mats which makes it more comfortable for the long days in the sun chilling out. There is a snack bar next to the pool which serves very nice salads - all freshly made and tasty. Very reasonable too. We didn't find it expensive to eat or drink out, unlike other reviewers had stated.

We had a couple of poor meals, but you get what you pay for and the cheaper places were pretty basic and unappetising. We went to the Mexican Restaurant and the Italian Restaurant on the main strip and both were excellent. Be prepared to wait over half an hour for any food at both places, but when it arrives, you won't be disappointed.

Legends bar has live music till late and when we were there, they had an English lad playing a guitar to a variety of music from The Beetles to Maroon 5. He was really good and a nice way to wind down after dinner.

Couldn't fault the weather - in the late 20's every day - not a drop of rain and a cooling breeze most of the time.

I wouldn't go back to this resort, but only because we both like quieter places and smaller apartments that do not appeal to families with small children or teenagers. We've done all that and now like a quiet life.

So my overall opinion is not a bad one - just not for us. I am sure that families would really enjoy this holiday as there is a kids club and plenty for youngsters to see and do around the resort.

One thing I will say is that the locals are extremely friendly and helpful and that always makes for an enjoyable holiday.

My/Our Holiday Review:

The Silchoro Apartments are very dark, dreary and basic but are clean and the maid service is excellent. The pool area is immaculate and the pool is cleaned and water checked every morning. The pool does not open until 8.30am and there is never a rush for sunbeds. The staff were very friendly and very helpful.

We felt that these apartments were too far away from anywhere and was a 'hike' to get anywhere, especially with two small children and buggies, at least 15 minutes to Strip and 20 - 30 minutes to beach.

The Strip wasn't our idea of Portugal and was too much like Blackpool abroad. All neon signs, bars, lap dancing clubs, and all the shops selling the same 'tourist mementos'.

The Old Town in Albuferia is only a 5 minute taxi ride away and is much more family orientated with good restaurants (recommend Bravo and Bravissimo - pricey but very good food). Also excellent street entertainment every night such as puppet shows, fire eaters, peruvian music and live statues!!

The beach at Sao Joao is situated down a very steep hill - fine to go down but torturous to go up!!

All in all good holiday, weather fantastic, staff in Silchoro very friendly, Old Town miles better than Sao Joao, but would go to less commercialised are of Portugal next time we visit.

we have just got back from staying at sao joao in the algarve may 6th to may 13th, rain, rain, rain, lightning and thunder,1 days sun, the locals commented they havent seen anything like it for 30 years in may (just my luck).

on the plus side the accomodation was excellant the rooms were very large and excellant size and well looked after,2 swimming pools, poolside bar, nighttime entertaintment was karoke, bingo etc, staff were very freindly, kids club daily with thompsons reps (becky and lindsey) who were excellant with all ages and portland rep ( mark) was very helpful, even down to fetching a bithday cake for my sons 3rd bithday, a visit to the old town is a must(go on free hotel bus)although taxis are not badly priced 5 euros, all restruants and pubs are on the " strip" 10 mins walk, coconuts 1 and 2 are excellant for food and kids games etc, best value for money for food was tom & jerrys very kiddy friendly,

i would stay at silchoro apts again, excellant apts, excellant price, shame about the weather.

My/Our Holiday Review:

ABSOLUTELY SUPERB, The Tropical Sol is close enough to "The Strip" to have plenty of places to eat drink etc, but far enough away to be quiet when you want it to be.

The Apartments themselves are excellent, very large, I had a 2 bed apartment and it had 2 full bathrooms and a huge living area( we had all 9 of us in there one night and still had seats to spair ), the other 1 bed apts were just as large and all kept very clean and tidy. Pool area very good as well as the pool bar, good food and a good price.

Not much going on in entertainment, Karaoke etc, but you MUST see Ze Lara on Monday nights, what a star. Marco and his wife in the Tropical Bar also first rate and kept us amused.

Supermarkets close for all your shopping, "Plus", left out of hotel, turn right and just over the roundabout is about the biggest close by.

Turn right and head up towards the strip and turn left(supermarket on left),a bar and then a restaurant which is very good. keep going and turn right and a few yards up on the right is Caravelle - very very good. Keep on going and as you turn right onto the strip on the corner are a group of bars and restaurants, the middle one on street level is very good, try the surf and turf Kebab, the pub next door is good for breakfasts, but we did not find the Steak Grill above this very good at all.

If you fancy a change go to the Koala Gardens - excellent. Left out of hotel, left keep going to the roundabout and second left, a bit of a trudge but well worth it. The Russian Yurey waiter will sort you out with some nice Ostrich or Kangaroo, my boys tried it but I stuck with the huge Kebabs.

Our first time on the Algarve and it was great right from leaving Manchester and unfortunately returning home. The apartments were spacious and clean, well equipped kitchen, good maid service and a very good sized pool. There was a snack bar at the pool serving tasty treats .

Although the entertainment at the apartments was a bit low key with two karaoke nights and a guitarist on one night the local Montechero Strip more than made up for this with an abundance of bars and restaurants our favourite being the Kilt and KELT Scotch bar and restaurant where the food was delicious.

The beaches are excellent both in the new and old towns and we went on the 3hour cruise from Villamoura along the Algarve coast.

All in all money well spent and an excellent week was had by all.

My/Our Holiday Review:

We have stayed in this resort a few times over the past years, it combines lively nightlife, excellent beaches and a lovely old town which must be seen. There were many reasonably priced restaurants as well as a lot of english bars serving English breakfasts (if you like that sort of thing).

The apartments were excellent, and very clean with maid service six days a week. We were a family group comprising of parents, children and grandchildren and although us oldies chose to have a separate studio from the younger ones there would have been ample room for all of us in the two bedroom, two bathroom apartment. From the outside our studio looked very basic in comparison to the larger apartment but there was plaenty of room with adequate cooking and bathroom facilities and it also had the bonus of a large terrace overlooking the pool.

The staff were VERY friendly and helpful and even made a special effort to come and say goodbye when we left.

The entertainment was not so good but with "the strip" so close by this was not a problem. AS for other reviewers comments about the strip club this has shut down so this was not a problem.

There was also a very good, reasonably priced restaurant round the corner next to Charlies bar which we visited a coule of times.

We would definately hope to go again!

My/Our Holiday Review:

The Tropical Sol Apartments in Soao Jao are spacious, clean and well equipped. We stayed in Room 306 which was a two bedroom, two bathroom air-conditioned apartment located three floors directly above the reception, hotel bar area. There was a maid service six days of the week. The kitchen was well equipped with hob, microwave and sink/drainer but lacked an oven.We have stayed in far worse both at home and abroad.

There was large pool with a diving board which ran from a depth of 0.5m to nearly 4m deep. The pool and surrounding area were cleaned daily.Bagging sunbeds was rife, towels would be placed on beds hours before the sunbeds would be used. The vast majority of Holidaymakers at the Tropical Sol were British with a few Spanish towards the end of our stay. There is a full-size Tennis Court available to hire at e8 per hour including equipment.

There are at least six supermarkets within a ten minute walk and a bakery within 100 yards.

We found the Staff friendly and efficient. The entertainment available was not to our taste consisting of a singer/guitarist,a Parrot show and two nights of Karaoke which went on until after 1am.The noise from the Karaoke and holidaymakers taking up to an hour to settle down afterwards meant sleep before 2:15am was difficult on Wednesdays and Fridays.

Directly opposite our apartment was the Oura Hotel which had a Female Strip Club attached. The Club was open until 3am for six nights out of seven.During the day it caused no problems but at 3am when it closed, the drunken yobbish behaviour of its' visitors mean't you would be woken up.With men shouting and screaming, taxis arriving/departing with horns tooting and wheels screaching, you were guaranteed a broken nights' sleep.

The apartments are located within five minutes walk of the Strip which consists of lots of shops and restaurants.Though the meals were reasonably priced, there was no quality. Some bargains were to be had in the shops especially leather goods. We visited Albufiera old town and found it expensive, crowded and not worth the visit.

The roads around Soao Jao were busy with poor driving and speeding common amongst Portuguese and British alike, especially at night.

Overall,we found the Algarve a pleasant place to holiday and the Tropical Sol was a good base. The weather was superb with a steady breeze 24/7.It rained on our last day for approx. 2 hours but soon dried.

My/Our Holiday Review:

I had a fabulous holiday with very few things to complain about!!

Firstly the resort: There is plenty to do and something for everyone. These apartments are located within easy walking distance to the "Strip" and also to the Old Town. The Strip consists of loud bars, restaurants and tourist shops etc. Ok, this isnt really my thing but I still had a good time on the few nights we went out there! If you like Indian food then I would highly recommend the Clay Oven which is just off the strip. The food is excellent!

The Old town is more my cup of tea and I had many a fab night there! It consists of amazing seafood resteraunts, winding cobbled streets, street entertainers and some really nice bars, not to mention the night time market selling everything from sweets to bags! I found that the best restaurants are to be found on Fishermans Beach, but watch out for high prices (I paid 97 euros for a lobster) which was lovely but not worth 70 quid!! I cant remember the name of my fave place to eat there but the table covers are in blue and white checks! The food there is excellent and reasonable.

The zoo marine is also well worth a visit if you have kids (we dont but we still had a great time there) and if your into shopping, jump a taxi to Algarve shopping where there are great shops and a Nike Factory Outlet where you can get good bargains!

Now onto the accomodation: I was very worried about coming to these apts after reading the reviews on here! I needn't have worried. The apts were spacious and clean on arrival and I have to say it was a lovely suprise! The staff were mostly friendly and helpful and the pool area was perfect for lazing around! My only complaint is that the cleaners were quite lazy during the 2 weeks I was there! But they still kept the place clean!

My/Our Holiday Review:

We loved the Vilanova and would recommend highly to any family wanting a fantasic holiday!!

We had 2 x studio apartments, in block 4 facing the pool and they were lovely. Really big, really clean, excellent balconies and well equipped. No noise at night. We hired a fan to keep the air moving as the weather was really hot and lovely! The rooms were cleaned daily and we had no complaints whatsoever.

Vilanova was brilliantly placed on the strip. We ate out every night, there is plently of variety and food is reasonably priced. Highly recommended is The Big Shanghai Chinese by The Praisio apartments, and the steakhouse in the square in the old town, ate at both places twice. Also enjoyed Lisa's pizza and pasta, just outside the Vilanova and the American grill up the top of the strip.

We loved the old town, and the little road train that took us there and back.

Beach lovely, although the pool at the complex was so nice we spent most of the time there.

Pool really big and with lots of space to spread out. Entertainers around the pool daily, with games and quizzes and music and fun!! Oh the prestige of winning a Superfamily T shirt or towel (adults) or Tompson the Dog medal (kids) and the ensuing prize presentation ceremony!! :)

Evening entertainment mostly good, especially the kids disco.

Kids clubs varied and well organised and my little one, aged 7, enjoyed them.

Special mention to Dan The Man, one of the entertainers. He truly is a talented young man and made average entertainment top class. Kids loved him, Adults loved him. You cant miss him!!

Both the 7 year old and my teenage girls 13 & 14 had a great time and met lots of friends. The family and parenting standard was excellent, certainly not chavvy or full of rowdy, uncontrolled kids. Was very friendly and safe and we met some lovely people.

We went to Aqualand and Zoomarine wich were good.

Our highlight was the Tompson beach bbq day. It was such a great day, Pirate ship along the coast to a secluded beach for a bbq and games and swimming. We wanted it to go on forever!! BBQ consisted of Pork steaks and sardines with bread and salad, plently of it, but small kiddies may be better with a packed lunch!!

Was a brilliant holiday and we would definately go back, we didnt see anywhere that we would rather have stayed and enjoyed ourselves thoroughly!!

My/Our Holiday Review:

We have just returned from 2 weeks at the Vilanova and we have had a fantastic holiday. We stayed in a 2 bedroom apartment which was very spacious, although a little dated in decor (although the complex will be refurbished before summer 2008, and all accomodations will be updated to include air conditioning).

We had 3 children in our party who all had a great time in the kids' clubs, and the youngest had a great time in the creche. All the reps were fantastic and did everything to ensure that everyone had a fabulous holiday.

We found drinks at the pool snackbar to be expensive, so we tended to walk round the corner to the VIlanova supermarket for bottles of pop and ice-lollies which were a lot cheaper.

Entertainment in the Casablanca bar was really good, the kids really enjoyed the 'Super Family Zone' where they did dancing and played games. The reps cabaret was also hilarious. Only downside was that the drinks were a bit pricey.

WE found restaurants on 'the strip' to be a bit expensive, but good cheaper restaurants could be found on the side streets. We had heard that 'Tom and Jerries' was good, but we found the food to be distinctly average and the staff were very miserable. THe best restaurant by far was 'Farnels'. THe food here was second to none and very reasonably priced.

The only trip we did was to 'Slide and Splash' which was good fun. If we go again we will definately go to 'Zoomarine' and do the dolphin interaction.

The Vilanova is in a great spot for getting on the 'Noddy bus',which runs to the beach and the old town. THis runs from 9am to 3am every 20 minutes. This is the best way to get to the beach,as 'cardiac hill' is too much of a challenge when you have little ones and a buggy!

If you do go to the Vilanova, make sure you take advantage of the evening sessions at kids club and creche, this way the adults can have a relaxing meal and some adult conversation!

If you do have small children then request a room in a quiet location. WE were in block one and found this ok, as we heard that the rooms overlooking the strip were very noisy.

WE had a great holiday at the Vilanova.

Block 2 sleeping in a studio and plenty of room. Full size kitchen - not a creepy crawlie or mozzy to be seen or felt! No illnesses in fact home from home. The place was extremely well run. Biggest 'babies' pool I have ever seen and the big pool was very good too.

I really cannot fault anything about this hotel at all, and what a joy not to be havin to slog down to book a sunbed at 7.30am in the morning. Be warned they simply don't allow it and collect all the towels off and make offenders collect them !. But better than that is the huge expanse of garden with sheltering trees so again makes the area even more spacious.

Cheapest pint 1 euro all day every day at Mary Anns bar and nice food served by friendly staff too. Tom and Jerries also very nice for food with cracking breakfast to include tea/coffee refills as well as orange juice in the price of 450 euros.

Villanova - can't fault it - Thomson Holidays s run it well and will def return

My/Our Holiday Review:

Wasn`t sure what to expect of this resort and hotel after reading some of the comments.

Our room was block 2 so we did get some road noise and noise from Lineakers bar but it didnt stop us from getting to sleep.Decent size room, basic but clean enough, good kitchen equipment(full oven, microwave, toaster, kettle, fridge )Complex is in huge grounds massive pool but no umbrellas round the pool only on the tables where snack bar is although there are trees you can go and sit under which alot of people did. There are 3 spring diving boards at the very deep end which our boy loved (and his dad come to mention it) Tennis courts and football pitch as well. There was entertainment round the pool but they never pressured you in to taking part. The entertainment staff were very good the children loved them.(cheeky charlie, hyper hanah and dan the man)Entertainment bar was good there was something decent on every night ,pool and games for the kids.

The main "strip" as its called is full of bars, eating places, and shops. We never had a bad meal our favourite eating place was "la poeta" food was fab. We found a lovely little eating place think it was called "Blue Wave" fab breakfast lovely staff and very cheap (beer 1.60 euros a pint and bottle of house red just over 4 euros and it was lovely) go out complex to main road theres a supermarket on corner its just a short walk up on left it may be 2nd eating place, well worth a visit.Never bothered with these "super familys" before but i would return to this one. Only one thing that got on my nerves was the people on the street asking my husband if he wanted "some smoke" HSH, BIT OF CHARLIE ETC.

We came here two years ago and said we would come back again. This is a Superfamily complex but there were us older ones as well and we didn't feel at all out of place. It is a super place, well laid out well organised and spotlessly clean. There is everything you could wish for in the apartments and the maids come in every day.

Most of the families spent the day around the pool or grassed areas as there is everything for the children. There is a snack bar by the pool as well. The reps are great and the children are well looked after by them.

There is a good supermarket across the main road that caters for all your needs with some great offers on wine!! Don't bother with the Plus s/market further down the road there is very little choice and you need a car to get there and back if you have a fair quantity of shopping.

There are plenty of places to eat around the complex and Doris's opposite the entrance is well worth a visit.

We walkled back along the beach from Albufeira. There are some wooden steps leading you up to the cliffs and on to the path to de Oura and it is a bit tricky in places but us mountain goats did it so anyone can!!

We love Monchique and the mountain which is a must if you have a car. The old port in Portimao is another place worth a visit although it is easy to get lost trying to find it.

Try the oranges on sale at the side of the road, they are not waxed and don't look as good as those in Sainsburys, but ,boy are they good!!! and at 2 euros for 3Kgs great value.

A really super holiday

My/Our Holiday Opinion:

We were a little apprehensive about this resort and hotel after all the negative reports, however we were pleasantly surprised. Although we would not class the accomodation as 3* it was far from being a budget hotel. We stayed in block 2 in a studio apartment we had 2 extra beds in what would have been a balcony area so enough room to sleep 5 people. The bathroom and kitchen were clean and fairly modern the maids came every day, the towels were changed daily and the sheets were changed once a week. We were against the main road and were not disturbed by any noise during the evening.

The pool and surrounding grounds were cleaned meticulously every morning. We did fing the bar prices for spirits expensive at poolside bar and the casablanca bar which is inside the hotel grounds. The reps were great giving good family entertainment throughout the day and evening although the evening entertainment did become a little repetitive for the adults. We found old town better for eating ,a taxi cost 3 euros, the beach at old town was also great. Grinfinas which is opposite the taxi rank was great value for money and the staff were very friendly serving good quality food. The pavements are made of small cobbles which are very worn and shiny these become very slippery and hazardous we saw many people on crutches and their arms in slings.

Overall a thoroughly enjoyable holiday.

My/Our Holiday Review:

Just arrived back after staying at the Vila Nova for a week. Situated right in the middle of 'The Strip' so not far to walk to the many bars and restaurants. We stayed in a 2 bed villa which was situated right in front of the pool so that too was very good for the kids, they could come back and forth to the villa whenever they wanted. Upon arrival at the Vila Nova we were allocated our Villa and had to pay a 70 euro deposit which was refundable when we handed our keys back at the end of the holiday, so be sure to take enough to cover this as some had to dip into their spending money to pay this. Found the villa very clean, but was fairly dated, which reflects in the price of the holdiday, after all we get what we pay for! Maids came in every day to make beds etc, didnt get a change of towels though. To my daughters horror the first morning she went to the toilet and screamed out, yes, there was a cockroach in the bathroom!! However this was the first one we saw and hope we never have to see again!

The pool is very big with 2 diving boards which the kids loved, although be warned if you dont want to ruin white swimwear dont wear it in the pool as it turns whites, yellow! Apparently, we were told this was due to people having 'suncream' on in the pool?? never had that experience in other holiday pools. One bonus is that I didnt notice anyone rushing down to the pool to save the sunbeds (these are chained down), there was always plenty to lay on, if not there is plenty of grass which people laid down on with lilos, the grounds are very nice and well kept.

The entertainment reps are fantastic, how they keep going from morning til night I dont know! Always games going on around the pool all day, with something for everyone! There is a pool bar which sells toasties, burgers or chips, toasties are about 250 euros, a cup of coke is 2 euros, after the first few days we took ourselves to the local supermarket to stock up on drinks as 6xdrinks every hour works out fairly expensive at 2 euros a cup, so we bought cans of coke for 55 cent each and the kids jst went back to villa and took them from the fridge when they felt like it, they didnt have a problem with people drinking their own drinks around the pool. Found the staff behind the pool bar very rude, couldnt give you the time of day except shoooo you to the other side of the bar while they took orders from the person behind you.

Plenty of bars and restaurants to choose from, didnt get to go in too many of them, we found a couple that we liked and tended to go back there, we went to coconuts which if you come out of the Vila Nova turn right cross the main road, coconuts comes up on the left, nice meals. But what the kids loved the most was the American diner which was past coconuts on the right hand side, very very reasonable!! Desserts were very nice too!! Found Tom and Jerrys the best place for English Breakfast, come out of the apartments turn left, keep walkin then the road forks to the right, where youl find Tom and Jerrys. Also if you go on the little bus just outside the apartments (its like a train/bus) it takes you round for 3 euros where you can hop on and off when you want all day, it takes you up the road where there is a Mcdonalds, Kentucky, Pizza Hut and a shopping centre, thats if you were desperate for some home comforts!

Nights were very busy on 'The Strip'. A very cheap supermarket called Marrachino is jst up by the main road. Plenty of scratchcard touts up that end by the crossing, dont be fooled by them, jst ignore them. The first 3 nights we were there walking down the road and were asked if we'd like some 'CHARLIE' again we walked past. Also to my husbands horror he was asked by 'local' women if he'd like 'anything' from them!

Found the resort very much like Blackpool as in being very busy, but luckily enough we had no noise at night from the villa we were far enough away.

Overall the holiday was ok, but I definately wouldnt return to the Vila Nova, found ourselves comparing it to other nicer places we'd been. Before going out to the Algarve we were really looking forward to it, but when we arrived we didnt realise how commercialised it was. But there is plenty to do so dont be put off by my report, waterparks etc. It jst wasnt the holiday for us

My/Our Holiday Opinion:

The Apartment

The apartment was spacious but certainly not nice. It was extremely dated and old fashioned, the furniture was grubby and soiled and in dire need of replacing. The whole accommodation was dark and dreary and was like spending your holiday in a time-warp.

Friends that we met also agreed after we exchanged views by showing one another the alternative accommodation each had booked. This ranged from a studio to the large villas. The accommodation is basic beyond belief and having taken many many holidays over the years would certainly not rate this accommodation as 3*.

The sunbeds are minimum and chained down with no sunshades at all. You can, however, take to the grassy area (armed with your own lilos) but do not expect to relax as this area is also used as a tennis court, cricket pitch and five-a-side football by inconsiderate holiday makers. Even though Thomson Holidays advertise this accommodation as 'Superfamily' groups of young people are frequently accommodated here on late deals and so we were subjected to loud music being played around the pool by the reps accompanied by loud amplified music coming from many of the villas and apartments. The pool-side experience can be compared to Butlins meets Club 18-30.

The entertainment in the Casablanca is bland and certainly does not represent the quality of other 'Superfamily' hotels we have been to. This is confirmed by the small number of adults who spend time there, or maybe its the price of the drinks, or maybe its because it is an extremely uncomfortable place to sit and almost impossible to view the show due to the many pillars needed when constructing the room.

The apartments are situated on the 'Strip'. Here you will find plenty of bars and restaurants. Once you have walked down the hill there is nothing left to do but to walk back up the hill. This area is extremly dirty and noisy with bars vieing to see who can play the loudest music. The food is reasonably priced but of poor quality. The strip gets very busy and noisy making it unpleasant for older people and families.

We booked this holiday hoping to experience a taste of the Algarve but it felt more like a tacky British seaside resort on a bank holiday.

My/Our Holiday Review:

Just back from the Vilanova and in two minds with this review.

The Vilanova is placed right in the heart of the action at the resort on what is known as 'The Strip', this is a road packed with bars, Restaurants and shops. It is very lively day and night , things quieten down at about 3am.

We stayed in an apartment in block 4 and our balcony faced the strip. This was not a big problem if the doors and shutters were closed as very little noise intruded, but beware, these apartments have no Air Con, and could become very hot with the doors shut. We took our own Fan with us which kept us cool overnight, and fans are available to purchase or rent in the hotel or town.

Safe deposit boxes were available for £3 per week, although we had no problems with pilfering, or lads left mobile phones and cash out a number of times, all untouched by the maids

The Apartment was large and was well stocked with utensils. The complex has a lovely pool area with a kiddies pool as well. There are no life guards so parents with young children need to be aware. We had no problems getting a sunbed at any time of day, as the pool is located in an extensive grassy area which many people preffered to using sunbeds.

There is a snack bar at the pool half litre beer £1.60, coke £1.40 bacon and egg sarnie £1.60. Cheaper than spain. There is no problem in taking your own stuff down in a coolbox but no glass allowed. There are 2 supermarkets within 4 minute walk, both well stocked with Poruguese and Enlish products (Pukka pies!!!)

As a Superfamily holiday we were expecting very good entertainment, but felt let down by the evening productions. We were there for 2 weeksand the second week was almost a mirror image of the first - Parrot show,Drag act, Pink Cadillacs band, the best nights were two comediens(although they struggled to make themselves heard amongst the noisy brats uncontrolled by their loving parents), and also a dance act which sounds yawn inducing but was actually very good.

Parents with children below 10 will like the range of entertainments during the day. Older children may get bored

There are numerous other acts going on in Bars along the strip. Coconuts 2 seemed to be popular with parents and smaller children. They had a hypnotist and other acts like a Brazilian dance troop and michael Jackson lookalike. A lot of the acts though, spend their time going from Bar to Bar on different nights so you tended to bump into them in a depressingly regular manner.

The 'Ricky Martin' act at the Bar over the road below the Top Deck steakhouse was very entertaining. Imagine a younger Peter Stringfellow but with a massively more inflated ego. We could only stand him for 2 songs and in that time 2 families left with the wife in Tears (of laughter).....he really loved himself.

Reading the comments above about being accosted by beggars, dealers and timeshare touts seems incredible to me. I was in exactly the same hotel and was not accosted once, nor were the kids who were out and about without us for a lot of the time. Maybe the police have cleaned the area up , so don't be too put off by those comments. The only 'violence' we heard of was that a 14 year old had been mugged for his phone. They used the scam of having one of the gang lie on the floor and asked him if he had a mobile so they could call an ambulance, when he produced it they took it and ran off....g*ts!

I only saw 2 beggars, one sitting in the street and the other was a little girl going from table to table , although she provided some entertainment when the waiter whacked her around the head with a rolled up menu.

Don't go to this area for the Potuguese charm and scenery, it is by far and away the most built up location I have ever visited. Thousands and thousands of bland apartment blocks everywhere. I loved the people and the food, but so overdeveloped!!

FOOD: Best restaurant for us was the Tres Palmeras. Down the strip and turn right at Cardiac hill, walk 5 mins and it is on the left. Full of Potuguese, very good service. We had a traditional Cataplana Clam and Pork Stew. £20 for 2 and excellent (but it does take 25mins to cook).

We also enjoyed the Koala Garden turn right at the first crossroads towards cardiac hill and again about a 5 mins walk. I had Ostrich Piri Piri, brilliant!!

Liza's restaurant in the complex below the Vilanova very limited menu but excellent at what they do, very clean and very popular.

AVOID: We tried the Paella restaurant once, even though it was very quiet it took an age to get the food and tyhe service was sloppy.

The Top Deck steakhouse was very popular but on our visit the staeks were tough and service slow.

EXCURSIONS: The kids enjoyed Aquapark, and the boat trip and BBQ was quite nice but not much entertainment for adults or teenagers.

The ride to Albufueira 'Old Town' on the road train was fun but like the rest of the area, the town itself was depressingly over developed and I couldn't find anything that looked 'Old' at all- very dissappointing.

There was a square with various street entertainers including those ridiculous south american pan pipers....has anyone ever seen them actually play???, we were there for an hour and all they did was ponce about in their hats trying to sell their CD's.

MONEY: we generally take a bit of cash and then use hole in the wall dispensers (TIP: Open a Nationwide account and use their card on holidays - very cheap), however the Portuguese dispensers would often refuse to work with UK cards, so if you use this method, get the maximum out whenever they do work!!

Weather very hot, beach very nice, area - a bit like blackpool but very lively if drinking and karaoke is you 'thang'. Restaurants generally good. A 'medium' holiday for me. Hope this helps!!

My/Our Holiday Review:

Good Points :- The beach at the bottom of the well known "Cardiac Hill" - absolutely fantastic there. Although you do have to pay 15 Euros for a pair of sunbeds! The Zoomarine was a fantastic day out - if you have the cash, go for the dolphin interaction. Tom n Jerry's cafe is excellent and it isn't just for kids. Best British meals by far and very cheap!

Bad Points :- Accomadation was (in our opinion) below average. We stayed in a Studio, which was very big but extremely basic. It rained a few times and "bits" would fall from the roof onto the balcony and this was NEVER cleaned. Yes the complex had a very big pool with diving boards but there were always activities going on for the kids (which is great if you've gone on a family holiday but definately a no-no for couples).

Now for the most negative of all....we were hassled every time we left the complex by beggers (adults and kids) and also drg dealers. You have to see it to believe it. I think these people avoided families but constantly aimed for couples. Really spoilt the holiday! Therefore can't see us ever returning.

NEGATIVE points: Vilanova - I would not recommend staying in a Studio there (stayed in Block 2). Very basic for what Thomson Holidays say is a 3* accomodation. Balcony was NEVER cleaned. Although you can hear the bars etc at night, it is bearable. I personally would not return to this resort purely because of the amount of beggers (adults and children) and drug dealers on the street, in the bars....you name it - they were there!! Took a day trip to Lisbon where the beggers and drug dealers were everywhere. And did the police do anything...NO!

POSITIVE points: Best beach by far (on a European holiday) at the bottom of the "Cardiac Hill". Absolutey georgous. There are plenty of cheap and tacky restaurants to eat at but two favourits of mine were; Tom and Jerry's (best home made food and very reasonable on prices)and good for adults aswell as kids, and also Costa Rica restaurant (based on corner in between the Vilanova and the beach)- staff are fantastic...a little bit more pricey than other places but well worth it. MUST TRY their Chicken Piri-Piri aswell as their desserts. Went to the Zoomarine which was a very good day out and its NOT just for kids.

All in all...as an European holiday - the Canaries win by far.

GOOD POINTS

Just came back from two weeks at the Vilanova, what can i say? best place i've been on holiday so far. the rooms are huge and the deposit of 50 euros is no problem when you see what is actually inside. Anyway just think of the 50 euro deposit as money for your last day when you check out. Also the space around the pool is amazing very comfortable on the grass next to little pool. 12ft deep pool and diving boards. I kept inventing new dives to impress my daughter.

Tom and Jerrys is a must for bored Children who can draw on the table mats or anything else the fancy drawing on. They do a great sunday roast just like your mam would make back home. Setana is in the vilanova complex very nice chicken korma. Zoo Marine is a must as you can actually swim with Dolphins for 90 quid. Praia de Oura beach at the bottom of the strip is peaceful and temperatures hit about 30 on Tuesday when i was there (cooked). The hill is known as Cardiac hill but people who can't manage it are usually wingers or drama queens, it keeps you fit as there is a lovely english chippy at the top you can call in to after the beach and take cod and chips back for your tea. All in all great two weeks which flew by. liked the area so much we are thinking of buying somewhere for a holiday home.

Only went to Albufeira old town once on the noddy train. Didn't think too much of it as it seemed a bit of a tip.

Suoermarkets Plus, Marachinio and SuperAli

Plus - is like Netto Enough said Cheap for a reason.

Marachinio - good selection good prices and good location. this is the one we used for our stay right at apartment doors and over the crossing. open 8am - 9pm

Vilanova on site supermarket - bit pricey but it's open well after the marachinio closes.

NOW THE BAD

Timeshare touts - Usual rules apply Ignore any that say they work for Thomson Holidays s.

Dr ug Dealers - they will offer you Hash, watches and gold chiains. Will not bother you if you say no. Keep an eye on wallets though. they come too close for comfort.

Beggers with their kids or just kids by themselves on main strip. Heartbraking as it is to see kids beg for money, it's not your problem. Portuguese Government should step in somewhere but who am I to question a Government.

vilanova apartments are excellently located in the heart of all bars restauraunts etc.the apartments are clean and have everything you need me my husband twins and baby went.the baby had a cot and highchair for nothing and i paid about 3 pounds hire for a buggy for a few days.

the hill isnt as bad as everyone makes out it is a winding road for lderly or infirm it is a bit too much but otherwise its fine.the only bad thing i can say was the weather it rained nearly every day and was freezing,i thought it might have been hot but it wasnt!.come 5oclock it was freezing and too cold for the baby to go out.the kids club was still on so the twins aged 10 still had great fun.the beach was 5 mins away nice but sea was choppy there is a little train outside the apartments dead cheap takes u round the island u can keep getting on and off all day !i spent over 100 pounds at the local "corner shop"basically for bread and cheese etc then learnt within walking distance there is a proper supermarket called plus and anotherone nearby that is really really cheap like our aldi or netto and we coulda saved loads so on your first day makesure you stock up its about 2 quid in a taxi back!u will save hundreds honestly especially with a family.

eating out was really cheap 3.50 got us four lamb chops chips rice and salad in a posh restaurant the chinese was gorgeous cost 35quid for 5 of us with a bottle of wine and drinks etc great.the whole holiday and place was gorgeous but i would never go again in the winter as it is as cold as it is here,i will defo b going again in the summertime i imagine the hundreds of bars and restaurants etc will have a great atmoshphere and you are allowed anywhere with the children.brill place just dont go in winter or you will b stuck indoors but as they sell bottles of wine for about 1 pound!!!you could always sit in and get drunk!!

the apartments have blow heaters and they r very high powered and keep the place lovely and warm.but go when its sunny!!!

My/Our Holiday Review:

We found the Vilanova complex to be fantastic for ourselves and our children. Even though our girls are very young we were able to give them alot of freedom whilst on the complex. The brochure pictures do not do the Vilanova justice at all as the pool area is a delight. The small pool is far enough away from the large pool to be safe for the children too. To be honest I wasn't overwhelmed with the overall resort, it was the Vilanova and the Thomson Holidays staff that made my holiday relaxing and the childrens holiday exciting. Although the beach is a good walk away (I'd guess half an hour with the children) we only went there twice in the entire 14 night stay. We found we really didn't need to leave the complex which is what we wanted with the children being so young.

The weather was warm but we had a total of 5 days of showers. The days inbetween were scorchers though and we all came back bronzed!

Our favorite trip was Krazy World and we enjoyed this more than the widely advertised Zoomarine.

Finally, I would like to say the holiday was fantastic and we will definately be booking again sometime.

We were very pleasantly surprised by our apartment, a roomy one bedroom with balcony, kept spotlessly clean on a daily basis and very well equipped if you want to cook (I didn't!). Our balcony overlooked the strip, which could be a little noisy, but was fairly entertaining too, so didn't bother us at all. The complex had lots to keep kids and adults entertained, organised games etc. and tennis courts too. The reception staff were very pleasant and helpful, as were the reps.

My only gripe was that the pool was absolutely baltic. Although, I would imagine that it gets warmer in the summer.

The beach is lovely. Really nice views, great waves to play in, and plenty of space and sunbeds to hire.

We ate out every night and didn't have a bad meal at all. Lisa's Pizza & Pasta is excellent, as was the Clay Oven Indian which also had curries on their kids menu, a welcome change from chicken nuggets and fish fingers. Further down the strip, we liked La Bamba for dinner, the waiters were really friendly and helpful. Oh, and the Jade Chinese was fantastic, their specials are highly recommended!!!

The Steakhouse across the road was nice, but their kids menu was pretty poor, probably best for adults only.

We had a lovely relaxing, (but fattening) family holiday here, and would return anytime.

Arrived back from the above complex last week. Weather fantastic for this time of year, until the last day it rained all day! We timed it well. The complex is extremly big consists of five blocks and villas. We were allocated a room in block 5, the only block with no lift!! And extremley noisy on a evening. As I have walking difficulties asked for a room change, this was done the following day, moved to block 1 the quietist block with a lift! Apartment fully equiped. concrete based beds not as bad as they sound! New modern bathroom. Wasn't impressed with the maid service, towels and bed sheets were never changed in the week we were there. The pool is massive, beds fastened down so you cant move them , but their was plenty of grass area which you can lay on if their is no beds available, which we preferred. Entertainment non stop from the thompson reps. Can not fault the reps they were brilliant.

loads of places to eat, all reasonably priced would recomend Lizas next door to the complex, and frogs further up the strip. Do not recomend Fredis!.

Strip full of bars we liked wild and company at the top of the strip - quite expensive though.

Can imagine the strip to be very very noisy and busy in peak season, it was busy enough and loud enough for us.

Beautiful beach at the bottom ot the strip down cardiac hill!! recomend getting a taxi very steep.

You can visit the old town on the "noddy train" for 3 euros each kids free, takes about 20 minutes. Advertised street of bars - It does have a street of bars all of which were empty!!

Would recomend zoomarine for a day out, costs about 15 euros each. Dolphin, and sea lion shows, aquarium birds of prey, swimming pools, plcaes to eat.

overall we had a fantsatic week first time in the algarve and the vila nova we would defentley come back.

My/Our Holiday Review:

We stayed at the Villa Nova appartments in Sao Joao for one week at the end of September 2005.

The flights from Glasgow were punctual and we found the in-flight entertainment, comfort & refreshments all very good. However, we were not allocated seats together, despite arriving at the airport in the middle of the night. Thomson Holidays had already allocated the seats, so we could have had an extra hour in bed. A friend of ours flew out to Faro on the same date as us (their MyTravel flight was in front of us on the runway) but she was allowed to pay the extra £10 per-person surcharge for adjacent seating one week before departure. When i called Thomson Holidays to make similar arrangements i was told the price would now be £25 per person. So - be warned - if you want to sit next to a partner then pay the £10 extra up front! Arriving very early at the airport won't make any difference.

When we arrived at Faro airport 8 flights had landed at around the same time so there was a queue at passport control approx. 300 yards long. We waited for about 25-30 mins to get past this checkpoint. I can see the sense in getting a lot of flights in at the same time but Faro passport control wasn't able to cope! Watch out for this if your landing @ Faro.

The bus driver taking us to the appartments was rude and also smelled of BO. He also waited until EVERYONE was on the coach before starting the engine, thus we had to sit on the bus in the middle of the day with no air conditioning. Maybe we were just unlucky with our coach driver that day though, as the one taking us back to the airport at the end of the holiday was fine.

Once we arrived at the Villa Nova appartments we paid the 35 euros deposit and went to our appartment. We booked a studio appartment that sleeps 2-3, but the two single mattresses were laid out on concrete bases in an L-shape. We were slightly disapointed at this (since we have only been married 4 months) as the only way we could sleep next to each other was to put the matresses in the middle of the appartment floor. We did ask the rep. & she suggested moving to one of the villas but this would have cost us an extra 15 euros per night. The villas are very nice though, we got the keys to go have a look before we unpacked & if we ever went back to the Villa Nova appartments we would definitely book a villa.

There were a few other minor niggles with the Villa Nova though:

1) On the roof below our balcony there were two pairs of underpants which had probably blown off someone's balcony railings at some point - by the look of them they had been there for a few months. Not particularly pleasant. We did ask the rep. to arrange to have these removed but her attitude plainly showed she could not care less. We didnt use our balcony much during our week stay, not because of the pants though. It was just her attitude that annoyed me mostly: "What to you expect us to do about it?".

2) The pool was absolutely freezing. Far too uncomfortable for us to go in and enjoy it.

3) The sun loungers are chained to the pool surround, so they can't be moved in/out of the shade or manouevered to get closer to friends/family. They were also slightly grubby.

Apart from the above, we found the Villa Nova appartments to be well laid out and the thompson reps appeared to work hard to keep the kids occupied. There are 3 diving boards at one end of the pool (of varying heights) which are popular with the teenagers. The reception area was well laid out with plenty of information & you can cash travellers cheques there + hire a fan for your room (10 euros per week).

The Casanova bar opposite reception has something on every night including the reps show on a Wednesday night, but we never went there during our weeks stay and it appeared that most other folks didnt either - it was almost empty everytime we passed it.

The "strip" is literally right outside the villa nova complex but we did not notice any noise from the bars etc once inside our appartment.

There were a lot of good places to eat & drink up & down the strip. The Kilt & Celt does excellent Scottish breakfasts, and the Coconut bar at the Northern end of the strip had friendly staff, good food and had 3 giant screens for watching the footy. There is also a good chinese restraunt, can't remember the name but if you come out the villa nova and turn left towards the beach it's approx 200 yards down on your left.

There is a small "train" service that runs from right outside the villa nova to the old town part of albuferia every 20 minutes. It costs 3 euros per person for a return ticket and is very clean, comfortable but slightly cramped! The old town is worth a trip but we found there were many more bars & restraunts to choose from on the strip.

Transfer to/from the airport was about 35-40 minutes. Weather during our week there was high 20's every day, never rained once but can be a little windy at night.

Probably would go back to Portugal and maybe go back to albuferia area but wouldn't go back to the Villa Nova, mainly due to the reasons above.

My/Our Holiday Opinion:

Just returned from one week in Vilanova apartments.

We went last week in September and weather was fantastic all week. A bit windy at night for the first 2 nights but great after that.

The complex has a lovely pool surrounded by a well kept grassy area. We stayed in a one bedroom villa which was fairly basic but clean and situated directly beside the pool. Be aware that as there are many trees and shrubs you may share your villa with ants. A spray is provided for use so no real problem, just a bit of a nuisance. The complex is well maintained and the Thompson reps were very helpful and pleasant. The nearby beach is a 10 min walk and down the nicknamed Cardiac Hill - this wasn't too bad unless pushing a buggy or wheelchair, well worth going as its beautiful.

The "strip" a bit tacky in our opinion, a bit too brash but certainly plenty of places to eat and drink. Take the nearby toutist train to Albufeira for only 3 euro all day ticket, lots of evening entertainment in the local main square.

Check out Paradise tours (beside aparts) as trips much cheaper than tour operator.

All in all good holiday but would probably stay a bit further from the strip next time.

My/Our Holiday Review:

We had a brill time at the Vilanova.I must admit as there was no air con that I owas worried I would be hot at night.

Portugal has a nice cooling breeze of an evening so sleeping was not a problem! We had an apartment over looking the strip which was noisy but you got used to it.I think they put young families etc in quieter rooms and young couples such as ourselves in the noiser rooms. The noise didn't bother us and we would not mind if we were allocated one of those rooms again.

The entertainment team were excellent , especially Tucker and Ian.They seemed to love their job and it showed.Although we do not have children we always choose a superfamily hotel as the standard and entertainment is excellent. The pool was huge!!! and very deep at one end hence the three diving boards. There was never any prob in getting a sun bed plus there are extensive gardens around the swimming poo, so you could always put a lilo or a towel down and sun bath there. The cleaners were a little dodgy and did what they had to do and nothing more. The complex it's self was spotless however. The bar staff always seemed a little grumpy and but you just have to go along with it.It becomes amusing in the end!!!! We went to Zoo Marine which was brilliant and the shows were well planned so you could attend them all.

All in all we would def recommend this hotel !Weather was brill as well!

After hearing many many good things about Vilanova from friends & family we felt we had to try it out ourselves!!

The accomodation is semi basic however for a self catering unit you couldnt ask for more. not just a hob with 2 rings but a full oven, microwave & satellite tv with cartoon network!!

There is a deposit to pay on arrival but no problem when you realise what is actually in the room!

The Thomson Holidays Superfamily team were amazing and couldnt have been better. Led by Vicky they were helpful anytime we needed it.always someone there it seemed-they really do work some hours. Entertainment by the pool was great fun-watch out for the waterbasketball with the reps on a Wed-its leathal!

Fantastic kidsclub for 3-12yrs with great girls especially Lindsey & Laura-really made kids & adults feel welcome.

Had a great hol & will be returning next year.

Team really are a credit to Thomson Holidays & deserve a pay rise-will be writing to Thomson Holidays to compliment them on their staff.

My/Our Holiday Review:

The Vilanova apartments are superbly situated in the middle of the Strip. You could either come out and turn left or right and either way had a large selection of bars and restaurants! Our favourites including Liza's Pizza & Pasta which was excellent value for money and the food was gorgeous, La Bamba restuarant which had excellent friendly waiter service and top class food.

The selection of bars is really good, the strip has something for everyone, whether you want a typical english local pub with John Smiths or a lively bar playing loud music til early hours.

The Apartments themselves were really nice. A very modern kitchen area which would be good for families wanting to cook. The bathroom was also fairly new and up to date which makes a change for foreign countries! The maid service was excellent, they came in everyday and were extremely friendly. However i think we hit lucky being in Block 2 which overlooked the pool but was quite peaceful at night. Other blocks overlooked the car park or the strip which would obviously be noisy late at night if you had kids.

The Reception was open 24hours a day which was good and the staff were very friendly. I have also never seen so many reps - you normally cant find any but here you had about 10 to choose from!!

The pool area was very nice but there could have been a lot more sun loungers in the space available. The grassy area was nice and away from the noisy kids if thats what you wanted.

The poolside activities were also good, a quiz everyday and games in the pool for both adults and children.

We also went to Zoomarine which was briliant and highly recommended. Approx £16 for the coach and ticket it was bargain! Even just to see the dolphins!! They were fantastic.

My/Our Holiday Review:

We stayed in block 4 of the main apartment block, we had a view of the pool from our balcony. The apartments are clean and spacious. We didn't hear any noise from 'The Strip' from our apartment, although I am sure you would hear some noise from some apartments, this depends which block you are in.

The complex is well laid out with the pool, playground and plenty of space on the grass for the kids to play football, cricket etc. The sunbeds are chained to the floor so they can't be removed from the pool area, there are plenty of beds but reserving beds with towels does happen despite reps stating this is not allowed.

The kids clubs was very good and kept our children entertained, kids reps were friendly especially Hayley who always had a smile for the kids and was very popular with them.

There are a number of bars and restaurants on 'The Strip'

We ate at Tom & Jerries which is left out of the complex and then right at the bottom of the road. We would also recommend Liugis which is right out of the complex across the busy road and then up the strip on the left (very child friendly). We didn't like Fredis or Kilt n Kelt, food wasn't nice.

The entertainment throughout the day was around the pool with water polo, darts, pool, swimming races and a quiz. the entertainment reps were good especially Tucker as he really gets involved, the Samba dance is a must to see (Ian and See-Ann need to smile a bit more.)

The evening entertainment was in the Casablanca bar, kids disco/games

at 8.30pm every night and then shows most evenings start at 10pm this was good but if you wanted a quiet drink try the reception bar (this just needs air conditioning but is still ok)

We went to Zoo Marine which we booked with the reps. A very good day out but not enough time to see all the shows would recommend you go by taxi so you are not restricted to a set time when to leave.

We also booked a trip to Slide n Splash with the reps. This was another good day out and unlike the day out at Zoo Marine there was plenty of time to go on all the slides and have lunch and look around the shops.

I would definately recommend the Vilanova it was a good place for a family holiday.

My/Our Holiday Review:

Accomadation: When we arrived the rep told us that our apartment was in block 5 over looking the pool. The apartment was very spacious, with a huge bedroom, T.V. and a kitchen that had everything from a lemon squeezer to a microwave as well as a full size cooker with 4 rings! The balcony was a fair enough size, with a lovely veiw of all the villas surrounding the complex.

The apartments were very clean with a maid service every day with linen and towels changed twice a week.

The pool was huge with the deepest part being 3.50m, it also had THREE diving boards that my son loved. The entertainment around the pool was first class, with a breakfast show in the morning and non-stop games til 3.30. The reps where a credit to thompson.

I would definitely recommend Vilanova to familys with children or young adults, as there was somthing for everyone to do. For the infants up to 3 there was a creche, for children from 3yrs. to 12yrs. there was a kiddies club and for the young adults from 13 to 16 there was a Grid where the teens joined in with lots of activites from playstations to drums as well as girls night in and boys night in.

Location:

These apartmnets where first class for location as everything was at your doorstep. Situated on the main strip. All the collection points for the trips were just outside the door. Across the street was the main pickup point for the noddy train, which took you into the old town. It's 3 euros for an all day ticket, this allows you to get on and off at the stops as much times as you like. This is very good value as a taxi into the old town is 5 euros.

Eating out:

Lizas pizza and pasta restauant was very good and very handy as it was right beside the complex. Average bill for eating out was around 35 euros this included 2 courses, bottle of house wine and 2 soft drinks. The sizzling steak house was very nice, steak was first class but averaged out at 50 euros. For takeaways or sit ins senhor frogs for italin was first class and not expensive. The chinese down the street on the left beside Devlins irish pub was very good value and very nice food.

Shopping:

There were numeros supermarkets around the complex, but i found that the one to the right of the complex and past main intersection, had the best value for money. All the shops on the strip more or less sold the same things. However the shops at the top of the strip on the right hand side seemed to be cheaper than the ones nearer to the beach.

Day Outings:

The beach was to the left of the complex down a very steep hill called cardiac hill, i never went to it as there was enough to do around the pool.

We went to Zoo marine. It was brillant. You can swim with dolphins for 130 euros each, but you have to book early with your rep as it does be sold out. The dolphin show made our day.

Another good day trip was SLIDE AND SPLASH. It was brillant! there were slides for everyone, with slides for the young children. It was a brillant day out!

Hope you found this helpful

My/Our Holiday Review:

After returning from a lovely holiday at the Vilanova apartments, i feel i must praise the Thomson Holidays reps (by one Marie) for all their hard work and commitment they showed during our stay. My 6year old daughter loved the kids clubs and made such a great relationship to the great kids reps there, they are a credit to the company.

The apartments i felt were abit of a let down, we were placed in the oldest, un-modern room possible, even though we booked well in advance. After talking to a rep we were give a better room which luckily had been updated last year. The rooms all have a cement base for the beds, but do look worse than they are. The maid service was very good too.

In the resort which can be hectic at night there are a number of great restaurants for eating out. Our favourites were the Paradise, Winsurf, and for the best Chinese out of the many around was the Royal Dragon, to the end of the strip turn left. Stone steaks are a must to try.

I had a lovely holiday but expected the apartments to be better considering the cost, the pool area and playgrounds were really nice, especially the gardens which are kept neat and tidy for you to sunbath on.

Whatever you do dont reserve a sunbed as Maria will remove your towels!!

My/Our Holiday Review:

We had a great time at Vilanova. It's in a superb location just off the Strip but you would never know you were right next to it when you are at the pool.

The apartment was fine with wardrobes in the lounge and bedroom which is better than most places we have been to.

The pool area is good although sunbeds are chained to the ground-lack of moveability-but loads of room on the grassy area round about. We bought 2 lilos - 1 at 5e and 1 at 12e. They were great on the grass, and also just laying your towel on the grass was fine.

We ate at the Kilt and Kelt a few times- once for dinner and 3 times for brekkie-excellent black pudding. There is such a varied selection for eating out it's difficult to choose our favourite!!

The Cockerel was great for a Sunday Dinnner with Yorkshire pudding etc and the dessert had stilton with crackers and a port-worth a try for cheese lovers!!

We went to Luigis - turn right out of apts over crossing and 3mins up- really friendly to kids and adults - our 14 year old chose to have her birthday dinner there and really loved it.

Dont go to Ding Ju Chinese- Food was rubbish-

Nosolo Italia food great-service shocking sooo if not looking for great service but good food try there...

Went to the Old Town-ate at Restaurant Louisiana-lovely fish restaurant and eventually friendly service-but got feeling they didnt want children in the restaurant-superb views of the sea though-and they ended up giving the adults loads of liquors at end of meal-lovely!!!

All in all we had a great holiday-the choice of eateries is amazing and should accomodate everyone's taste.

We would certainly consider going back to Vilanova and Sao Joao.

Just tell the Time Share Touts 'Thanks but no Thanks'

Reps at Apts were lovely - great with kids but didn't hassle you in any way... Just the way we like it...

We have just returned from the Villavova complex. Hope this helps;

Hotel

On arrival we were told that we we lucky and had a room in the best part. Nice and quiet they said. To right they were! It was more like cell block H! Dingy and stuck in the corner of the car park. Brick walls from every direction. The worst room we had been in over 20 years of travel. We went straight back and complained. No one should be given a room like this. They gave us another room. It was the Ritz compared to the first one. Why wasnt we offered this in the first place?

The pool was great, food and drinks overpriced. Didnt see much of the reps, but they were Ok.Plenty to do for the kids and its right on the strip, everything only minutes away.

Shop around for excursions, we saved £20 on Thomson Holidays prices for the waterpark by getting our tickets from a shop 100 yards from the hotel.

The resturants. The main ones on the strip, same price as UK but only half the portion. Total rip off. They get no pleasure in serving you. We ate at 8pm and we were in the kebab house at 10.30pm. When we eventually found the english places did we get some good meals. Mary Anns is good. Not the prettiest place but the food is excellent and well priced. She has been there 17 years and was very nice. The place was packed everynight.1 Kid eats free with 2 adults. The chinese was good near Mary Annes.

Drinks are reasonable, but when happy hour finishes the prices shoot up. This is usually 10pm, odd one is 11pm.

Beach is a hard walk back up the hill, sunbeds well crammed in. Plenty of watersports to do.

Slide n Splash was brill.

Would we go back to Villanova? Only if we could get an apartment block. Its a gamble with the rooms in the hotel. The area is nice if you like to be in the middle of everything. We had a great time, weather was excellent.

cheers

Just back from a fantastic holiday in Portugal and very sad to be home.

The complex was supurb the weather was well into the 100,s, the food was great and the entertainment from the Thomson Holidays reps was top class, Tucker, Ian and Ciane brilliant a real credit to Thomson Holidays s, kept the Adults and Kids well entertained every evening in the casablanca bar. Our Apartment was a 2 bedroom one which was huge each bedroom had its own bathroom one with a shower the other with a bath and the kitchen was fully equiped not that we used it much with all the places to eat. Block 1 and 2 are the best if you have a young family not too noisey, Block 3,4 and 5 are nearer the strip and casablanca bar which are open late so its a bit noisey.

The kidzone and creach are really good and kept the kids busy for hours all the staff are very friendly and helpful the reception reps are also very helpful. Places to eat which we enjoyed was portofino which is out of the complex turn left up to top of road opp la bamba bar and ice cream parlour really good food cost about 30 euros for the family, also try just before that at windsurf you can get a meal for the family in there for 20 euros, tom and jerries is a must good for the kids and english run thats left out of the complex up to the crossroads turn right very nice home cooked food great prices and for the best pizza in the algarve try lizas which is next door to complex.

Places to visit are zoomarine the dolphins and seals are fantastic and its not too far if you hire a car also slide and splash is a must real fun day out not that you need to leave the complex with all that lush green grass to bathe on and massive pool to swim in, My little boy loved the baby pool and my little girl loved the park/sandpit, The beach is fab too only a short walk away left out of the complex all the way to the bottom of the road down a bit of a hill, The hill is not that bad on the way up only if your really unfit, I was pushing a buggy and it didnt seem too bad.

All in all you will have a wonderful time as we did and will be returning again next year, Enjoy your holiday.

After staying at the vila nova i feel it would be hard to find a better located apt they were right on the strip but we hardly noticed as our apartment faced the fantastic and very large pool. maid service is the best ive ever received abroad.

There were plenty of shops bars and resturants around the complex and theres also a train stop across the road that takes you into the old town (a must)every ten minutes for 3 euros per person little one was free you could use it as many times in one day as you like.

Entertainment is second to none there loads of stuff to do on site with the kids clubs and drop in centre and they have water polo in the daytime as well as other activities. Tom and Jerrys is a must great food and the kids get there own glass to take home as well as been able to draw on the tables!!we also went to Lizas italian restaurant they have 2 one outside complex and one in old town above domingos bar we went to the old town one the food was fab and was very reasonable priced 1 starter 2 main meals and 2 bottles of wine 31 euros!!!! we also got a 2 sangrias and a cola for the little one free at the domingos bar below for eating there great stuff!!I would look around for bars and resurants just of the strip as they are great and a little cheaper as apart from lizas we found the algarve quite expensive but well worth it.

I will diffinetly go back here but would leave the main summer months ie july aug to the young ones as i would imagine it can get very livley but for a family holiday in may june sept i would rec.The reps are a credit to Thomson Holidays they realy try to make your holiday as safe and exiciting as possible and nothing is to much trouble you always have them on site so your never a short walk away to ask for anything.

The weather when we stayed(may8 -15) was just nice through the day so you could sit out although it did rain it was mostly in the night or first thing in a morning and only lasted about 5 minutes.Saying this we all came back with a great tan!

My/Our Holiday Review:

This is our second time going to Portugal, last time we went in September so it was A LOT warmer, we went in March because we got a really cheap deal.

Weather

When we arrived it was pouring down with rain and was raining the next day as well. As the week went on the sun was starting to come through by but 3 o'clock you needed a jacket on.

The accomodation

When booking our holiday I requested a high level room, pool view and balcony, when we arrived we had none of these, the room we was given (in block 1), was on the ground floor, had no balcony, just a dirty table outside and no view, well if you call a car park a view.

The room was very cold and dark due to the fact that where the room was positioned there would never be any sunlight shinning in on it. The room itself was awful, very old fashioned bathroom with vile blue flowered wall tiles and very old fashioned, the oven was all rusted and the room had a general cold feeling. We went to reception to complain and straight away they gave us keys to another room. As we was complaining another couple was moaning about their room too saying the same sort of thing but they said they had lights hanging of the walls.

The new room we was given was totally different to the first, it had a morden bathroom, pool view, a warm feeling and sunshine shinning in and a good equiped kitchen, we was happy.

The pool there is huge and would def be big enough for peak season, there is also plenty of green surrounding the pool area, although due to the weather it was too cold to go in the pool.

While we was there it looked like they was modernising one of the blocks.

The bar in the apartments is ok, they was doing buy one get one free every night from 6-9 so this was cheap and the barman ono was very nice, good to chat to and keep us amused.

Rember that you do have to pay a deposit when you first arrive at the hotel, ours was 75 euros, you do get it all back but not until the last day of your holiday when you check out.

The surrounding area

The Vilanova apartments are at the top of the strip, because we went in March and not alot of the clubs/bars was open we could not hear any noise but in peak season it could be loud. Looking out at the front of your room was the roof for Linkers bar and in the summer this area is open so if you were in a room there you could possilby have noise coming from there, there is also a club opposite that has a live band playing and some nights you could hear this.

All in all it was a good holiday but Personally I would not stay there again.

My/Our Holiday Review:

The accomodation was clean, comfortable and cheerful. The bathrooms were very modern and there was alot of different kitchen equipment supplied, which i was not expecting (e.g. from a lemon Squeezer to a mircowave, etc). The hotel staff were extremely helpful and welcoming. The resort was very pleasant and was always kept clean, especially the exotic gardens. The resort also had a very large swimming pool and child play areas.

However if you are expecting traditional Portuguese culture, you may be disappointed. As the hotel is situated on the 'strip', where all you can find is greasy fry ups and sport bars. Although tourists can catch a cab for 5 euros to the 'old town', which has an authentic Portuguese feel.

I wasn't particularly impressed with the entertainemnt on the 'strip' because it wasn't very appealing for clubbers. However there is one club, near the strip which is apparantly very good but it is only open on saturdays. Also there is an American bar, called 'Mustang', whHRC plays RnB and Hip Hop.

The beach was very scenic and had a beautiful view of the cliff tops. There was also a nice restuarant, next to the beach, which I would recommend. Also i recommend tourists to vist 'Loule' market, which sells traditional goods.

In addition, the hotel makes you pay a safety deposit on your arrival, which ranges from 35 euros to 70 euros.

me and my partner went in feb and found the weather nice in the day although not bakini weather but very cold at night.wasn,t too pleased to find out you have to pay a 60 euro deposit when checking in but you do get this back at the end of your stay.

Apt was really nice and clean.Pool area is lovely with a massive main pool with diving boards smaller pool for kids. The staff here are very friendly but some of us thought the reps needed to find out more about the resort so they could be more helpful to the guests.

Not many people about this time of year so i
