My/Our Holiday Review:

This was the first of 4 hotels we stayed in over a 16 day visit to the Algarve and Spain (Isla Canella,Nautical Gale, and the Almansor).

The room was clean and the breakfast was the best ever with sausages and mushrooms you could eat!!!.

Pool area was clean and the entertainment team were excellent.

Great hotel 90 per cent British with no kids lovely gardens with fish ponds etc.

Bit of a trek to the beach, you can go through the Sheriton Hotel but its still a fair way.Theres more bars and resturants than I thought and prices are ok, but I would'nt go for more than a week.

My/Our Holiday Review:

Spent 1 week at this Hotel (15th-22nd March 2007) Weather was very good for this time of year and wore shorts all week but gets cold at night so take a jumper.

Hotel, food and entertainment are excellent but the best thing about it was adults only and therefore very relaxing.

The Hotel and rooms were very clean with lovely gardens and plenty of Sunbeds.

The Hotel prices for drink and food was expensive (Like all Hotels)but plenty of Bars locally and Supermarkets for water.

The beach which is long and sandy with attractive cliffs about 20 mins walk away.

You can walk along the beach to Vilamoura which has a lovely Marina and well worth the effort.

The Old Town of Albufeira is very attractive with a small new Marina with the Apartments which are close by and painted in many colours but the new resort looks like it will be very busy during the high season.

The tiny fishing village called D'orla Agia which is a short walk away has a small beach several bars and a few nice shops and well worth a visit.

Don't waste your money going to Loule Market although Loule town is quite nice.

If there are four of you it is cheaper to get a taxi than catch a bus in either direction.

We liked it enough to return another year and is good value for money.

My/Our Holiday Review:

We have just spent New Year at The Falesia and had the most fabulous holiday.

Please bear in mind that it is winter and Christmas/NY so alot of the places were closed so were not impressed with Acoteias. Not to worry we thought, you have legs. So, off we walked to Villamoura. We walked it on the beach which took about 2 and half hours. This is a modern town with not much in the way of 'old' things to see but shops. The Marina is impressive with some lovely shops and restaurants around the edge (like Peurto Banus).Figo 7 is the bar to go to here with nice food and very strong Sangria(if you can get a seat as the locals love it too). We got a taxi to Albufeira (they are cheap and some always at the end of the driveway)This had the old town to wander around with some good shopping too.We walked back which took about 3hrs but was a pleasant walk. The next village to Aco' is Olhos d'Agua which you can walk in 15mins (we walked back along the cliffs/beach) and this is a tiny old fishing village with a lovely cafe/bar on the front to while away the hours, people watching and drinking. We went on a trip to Loule( pronounced loo-lay)which had the so called gypsey market (rubbish)not worth seeing really.

Now to the hotel... Yes it could do with the bedrooms updating, few cracked tiles etc. We paid for a Superior room which was lovely as it had a seperate seating area with t.v(so we could watch Corrie, yes Corrie!!! it has 4 English chanels)coffee table and fridge. The only downside to these rooms are they are at the side of hotel so not very nice outlook. I don't go on holiday to sit on my balcony tho' so I didn't bother getting us moved.None of the rooms have a sea view as it is set back from the coast.

When I booked this hotel I didn't realise it was a 'Gold' so was a bit upset to think I was going to spend NY's Eve with oldies going to bed early. How wrong can you get!!! It was filled with a mixture of ages from couples on honeymoon, right thru' to oldies and New Years Eve was one of the best I have ever had. The staff worked from dawn to dusk to change the Piano room into a spectacular sight. It started with canapes and champagne at 7.30 in reception and then into the Gala Dinner which was a fabulous 6 courses, all with as much free champagne, wine or beer as you could drink. All evening we were entertained by the resident duo. Then at 12.30am they laid a buffet out (as if anyone had any room after all that). We eventually went to our room at 2.30! The staff worked their socks off and deserve the highest praise!!!!!!!!And all with a smile.

The following day was very delicate but the staff put on a free brunch at lunchtime which was nice as we didn't want to go far. How anyone can say the food here is repetative wants seeing to. We have 4 hols a year so I have had some rubbish along the way but the food here was lovely. Every night was different and definately not re-cycled, even for soups. The only night I could have moaned was a fish night (which I don't really do) so I had the biggest plate of salad followed by a big plate of profiteroles. Desserts were not the best I've had but the soups, salads and main courses make up for it.We met a couple who had been there 3wks and they said the food was not repetative (Hi to Jack and Jackie!!!)

Everywhere was very clean with cheerful staff so I would recommend you try it out for yourself, especially for New Years Eve.Oh and the indoor pool and jacussi are good too. I hope this has helped the Falesia ratings as we had a ball!!!!!!!!!

This is a very nice hotel, with a nice pool (though very cold) and nice grounds. The food is buffet which is fine for breakfast, though average for dinner. Only one bar so if you dont like the inhouse entertainers ( the females voice every night drove us out) tough. If you like games by the pool this is for you, personally we wont be going back.

My/Our Holiday Review:

We have just returned from our first Thomson Holidays Gold Holiday at the Falesia Hotel in Acoteias and would like to say how impressed we were. The Hotel was beautiful and the pool and gardens were lovely. The rooms were very nice and spotlessly clean. Although the resort its-self was very small it did not detract from our enjoyment overall. Our only negative comment is that the cost of drinks, beit soft or alcoholic was rather expensive. However, all of the staff we encountered were charming and very efficient.

The entertainment team of Jinx, Potter, Lesley, Rosie and Eddie was superb, they were full of enthusiasm and fun to be with. We will certainly be taking more Thomson Holidays Gold holidays in the future and can thoroughly recommend them.

My/Our Holiday Review:

we arrived at faro for 8.30am and where on our sunbeds by 10.20, there where plenty to choose from didnt like the sun shades around the pool area as these where a sliding shade contraption that meant the people who didnt want to sunbathe stopped the people who did, bring back umberellas!there where ample grassy areas under trees with sunbeds so we spent the week there.

we requested a high floor room and got one i also arranged a champagne breakfast for my wifes birthday in our room which was excellent. there was a nice decking area around the pool bar to sit for drinks during the day and you could have lunch at the hotel but we found it expensive compared to the places off site that we found down the steps at the front of the hotel. must mention the indoor pool, jaccuzzi and steam room what a great way to start the day a quick swim and jaccuzzi before breakfast. we enjoyed our week there now here come the buts... found it expensive, the staff seemed to be not very approachable not one smiling face in the whole hotel, didnt like the dining room dont like sitting on couches to eat a meal, they where in no hurry to replenish any dishes that where getting low or had run out, and if, like us you dont want to eat early in the evening, by the time we came down at 8.30 there was not much of everything left. they take your credit card details when you book in... nice to be treated like an adult and trusted.. not!

Overall nice holiday weather superb, have stayed in many gold hotels but this is one we wont be going back to.

My/Our Holiday Review:

Overall it is difficult to fault the Falesia Hotel. It has obviously been renovated and on the whole it has been well done. Most of the things listed below I would not have noticed, but my wife misses nothing and she is usually right. The bathroom was first to get commemnted on. It is obviously part of the original hotel and is traditional in style, nothing wrong with this, except the wall and floor tile grouting was black in places and there were holes in the tiles were pipes came through. The beds are new but the bedding must be original as it doesn't fit the mattres.

There is an outdoor series of waterfalls and pools with carp in them, very nice but the water was stagnent. During the week we were there I saw no one clean the swimming pool, someone may have, but I didn't see them.

The hotel is relatively small and some rooms were right next to the pool area or front drive with no privacy, ours was over the entrance canopy and we were told we couldn't move.

Meals were good but the evening meal was typical half board and would get a bit repitive if you were there for two weeks.

Acoteias is a small pleasant place but to get to the beach you need to go through the grounds of the adjacent Pine Cliffs Hotel or get the hotel bus. The beach was beautiful and we walked along it to Villamora and back one day.

One warning do not take Travellers cheques, the hotel won't change Euro ones and charges 20 Euro- yes 20 Euro, to change ANY amount of sterling cheque. We tried the local bank and they charge the same!!! No one warned us of this, luckily I had my bank card with me and we used a cash machine.

Thomson Holidays Gold reps worked very hard and put on some excellent shows. Visiting professional acts were good but if you have been to a Thomson Holidays Gold before you will have probably seen them before and their material doesn't seem to change. The local interest rep did most of the welcome meeting and I struggled to understand what he was saying, again this might just be me.

Overall we had a pleasant stay, despite the weather in early June being mixed. The above points are relatively minor. If we went again I would pay the extra for a superior room and avoid the canopy and sunbathers.

My/Our Holiday Review:

We have just returned for a wonderful holiday at the Falesia Hotel in Aceotias.

Firstly the resort - it is small but this is clearly stated in the Gold brochure and lots of Golds are in the quieter areas - which is why we choose them. The best way to access the resort is to come out of the hotel and walk down the right hand side of the driveway go straight down the road oposite (looks like a dead end)and go down the steps you are then directly in the middle of the resort. Places to eat, Nice coffee shop where they do amazing chicken sandwiches this is the at the bottom of the steps, immediately right and has green tables. If you walk to the left there is a chinese, Italian place (excellent pizza and pasta), an Enlgish pub called the Pig & Whistle and several more. We ate at all these places and found them very reasonable and the food excellent.

There are two supermarkets one larger to the left of the resort and one smaller to the right.

Hotel - Very good, rooms large and comfortable, all rooms have good views, we had pool side view on floor 4 which was great. Food is very good although the choice of main dishes was more limited than we have had in other Golds. Drinks are more expensive than in the resort but no too bad although we did hear some guests complaining that the drinks were "watered down". We personally did not experience this. The inside pool, steam room and jacuzzi were very good and we went in most days around 3-4 and found we had the place to ourselves.

Entertainment - this isn't really our thing but we saw a couple of the shows and they were good.

Reps - excellent reps especially Lyndsey and Leanne. Entertainment hosts very nice especially Rosie.

All in all we had a great time - this hotel does lack the small Gold "finer touches", ie the cocktail when you arrive and the managers cocktail party needs improving but as they are only just entering their second year of gold I would expect this will change.

Watch you money!!!! We were enjoying a very relaxing week at the Falesia and could finD fault with nothing - that was until we realised that money was missing from the digitally encrypted safe deposit box from the room. A total of 70 Euros was taken - probably over two maybe three days. Perfect crime as you are unlikley to miss small amounts, no doubt putting it down to miscalculation. Another couple suffered the same fate and could tie the times that the safe was accessed to when they were at dinner.

Hotel manager not surprisingly, was in complete denial and a similar reponse from Thomson Holidays . It was suggested that holiday makers be warned of the potential for thefts but again, not surprisingly this was not done.A very lucrative scam over the course of the season. Yes, it can be done if you have access to the rooms and the piece of equipment needed to override the PIN.

Aside of this, the hotel couldn't be faulted!!

My/Our Holiday Review:

We spent 2 weeks at the Falesia at the end of May 2006 and enjoyed both the hotel and Acoteias itself.

The hotel is situated away from the main road in quiet and attractive gardens. Although we used Reception rarely we found the staff to be very pleasant, helpful and polite. The only down side we feel we should mention is a problem we haven't encountered before in any hotel, Gold or otherwise; money exchange. We were surprised to learn that they would only change £140 per transaction at a charge of 20 Euros for traveller's cheques or 10 Euros for cash. For people taking £50 traveller's cheques this meant a charge of 20 Euros to change £100. The charges are similar in the only bank in Acoteias. However, we discovered a shop in nearby Olhos D'Agua that exchanged both cash and traveller's cheques with no commission charge and a good exchange rate. The shop is on the right side of the road heading towards the beach in Olhos D'Agua, selling drink, cigarettes, souveniers etc. It has a large canopy displaying "Slide & Splash" ads.

The restaurant was very attractive and had an excellent breakfast choice including the usual fried breakfast and a vast display of well presented sliced fruits. Tea and coffee pots made things quick and easy. Dinner ranged from average to excellent but when we went in at 8:30 we often had to wait and/or ask the staff to clear one of the empty tables as they sometimes seemed more intent on getting things ready for breakfast (although the restaurant was open until 9pm). Once seated the service was very good and we never felt rushed.

The entertainment was inside and the stage was quite a distance away if you're seated towards the back of the room. The entertainment team worked very hard and were very nice but we felt that we had seen more professional teams in other Gold hotels (e.g. The Yaramar, where we're going back to for the 4th time in August, and Cala Llonga). The waiter service in the bar was the best we have experienced. We never had to wait long and they were always very pleasant, in common with all the hotel staff.

The bedrooms were very nice with lovely views. We weren't overlooking the pool but the views were still lovely. For us the fridge in the room is a must at a charge of 40 Euros for 2 weeks. The electronic safety deposit box in the room cost 30 Euros.

The pool and grounds were stunning and completely relaxing. We had no problem getting a sunbed at any time and there was always plenty of choice both around the pool and in the lovely gardens. There was no queuing for sunbeds at any time.

The indoor pool and sauna are immaculate and very quiet.

After watching some of the entertainment most nights we liked to go out into the resort of Acoteias. Although the resort is small and quiet we never found it boring and thought it was a pleasant change from the normal typically British tourist resorts. There are 3 or 4 Portuguese restaurants, a Chinese, a couple of Italian. There are a handful of other bars including Brothers Bar and the British run Pig & Whistle. Brothers Bar is very popular with tourists and locals and a great place to chat to people. Antonio and Miguel make you very welcome and soon know what you want to drink before you ask. It's the only bar that stays open late (2pm). The owner of the Pig & Whistle was also very friendly and gave us lots of useful information as we'd never visited Portugal before.

Nearby Olhos D'Agua is a pleasant resort with a nice beach. It's a pleasant 25 minutes walk following the main road - or ask the owner of the Pig & Whistle for short-cut directions.

We walked to 4 beaches during our stay. The hotel offers a regular courtesy coach to one of these but it wasn't our favourite. Next to the hotel is the Sheraton Hotel with access to their beach through the hotel grounds and using the lift down to the beach. Further along the road is the beach we liked most (go for a drink at the Pig & Whistle for directions) - it has a lovely sandy track winding down to the beach which has sunbeds (15 Euros for 2 sunbeds and shade), a restaurant/bar and immaculate toilets and showers and even a phone on the beach. It can only be reached on foot or by car and the slightly uphill walk back may not suit the less mobile. The other beach we visited is in Olhos D'Agua, which is quite picturesque with rock formations on the beach. There are a selection of shops and bars just off the beach. This may be a livelier resort on a night.

We went on the 'Best of the Algarve' tour with Thomson Holidays 's at a cost of 100 Euros for 2 people. If you like spending a lot of time on a coach you'll love it but we found it a bit too much travelling for what we got to see. However, if you want to know anything at all about Eucalyptus trees or the effect of European Parliament policy on Portuguese farming and fishing, we're the people to ask! (the guide had strong opinions!)

For anyone who enjoys running there are any number of really nice routes all around Acoteias.

So, would we go back to Acoteias? Like a shot we would. It certainly seems to us like it would be a great place to live. If you're looking for wild nights out this probably isn't the place for you. We often like a lively holiday but found this to be a wonderful, relaxing, enjoyable holiday and met some very nice people..and NO children!

The hotel was excelent in every way, we have been to a number of Gold hotels and the Felesia rates right up among the top few. The food in the excelent and unusual dining room was really good lots of varity always hot and very well presented. We read some of the other bad/poor comments on this site about the hotel and were a little apprehensive but we found nothing at all to cause us the slightest inconveinience. We took all our money in euro's and so avoided any charges for changing cheques. Bar prices were no dearer than spain the only differance is that unlike spain spirits etc are measured I supose this could give the idea that you are being short changed but it is not so. The resident entertainment crew were very very good.

All in all a brilliant Hotel and Holiday The Felesia is on our "to go again list".

My/Our Holiday Review:

Firstly be warned, Acoteias is so small that I'm surprised that it has a name. It consists of a main street with a few bars and restaurants, half a dozen shops and little else. As a consequence we spent most nights in the hotel and it seemed to me that the drinks were very expensive presumably becasue there was little competition.

The hotel itself is very attractive. You are met at the door and your luggage is taken by porters who bring it to your rookm after you have checked in. the staff are all friendly and helpful, any requests are dealt with imnmediately. The restaurant, which is partially below ground is beautifully laid out and decorated with ample seating for everyone and table groupings for from two up to about eight. There was always plenty of food and it was generally of good quality but the range of dishes available was not great and the same things tended to turn up in different guises on consecutive nights. I have to say, though, that everything I had was always well-cooked and tasty and I never went away feeling empty.

The beach is a good distance away. the hotel runs a courtesy bus but this does limit the times that you can go and return. The alternative, which we took, was to walk through the Sheraton resort next door where they have a lift, would you believe, that takes you down the cliffisde to a boardwalk along a ravine to the beach. this is a particularly pretty walk and far better than taking a stuffy minibus ride. A word of warning, if you use the Sheraton's beach bar make sure that you have plenty of money with you. I bought a large beer and a large fresh orange and it cost ?12.50, what made it worse was that when the waiter arrived, before I looked at the bill, I had a ?10 note ready to pay. How to look like a peasant in one easy lesson!

We took the bus to Albufeira twice. the first tim we got off at Montechoro and walked down The Strip to the beach. The Strip is horrible, one long procession of bars, clubs and shops selling tat with the touts almost outnumbering the tourists. One of them flashed a clipboard at me and asked if I was with one of the holiday companies shown on the card. I said, of course I am you've got the name of every bloody holiday company flying to the algarve on there! On the other day we went into the old town which was better. there are still a lot of bars and restaurants but the narrow winding streets and squares make you feel like your in another country rather than in some tacky British resort during a heat wave. beware the buses though, they're infrequent, invariably late and often don't bother turning up. On balance it's probably better to pay the extra and get a taxi.

I have only one major compalint and that is about the always thorny subject of towels on sunbeds. I was sittinmg in reception one afternoon when I heard one, what I can only charitably refer to as a whinging old sod, complaining to the Thomson Holidays staff about people putting towels on sunbed before they went down for breakfast and saying that he and his wife weren't able to get a sunbed when they came down. The staff's response to this was, in my view, completely over the top; they instituted a regime where unoccupied sun beds in would have their towels removed, so if you went for a walk you could come back to fuind your belongings moved and somebody else occupying your sun bed. When they announced this they said that reserving sun beds was unnecessary as there were sufficient beds for everyone. If so why didn't they say this to complainer when he said he hadn't been able to get one and, if there were enough for everyone it whouldn't matter if anyone reserved one. Okay rant over.

Overall a superb hotel marred only by one or two minor quibbles.

My/Our Holiday Review:

We arrived at the Falesia Hotel, and were greeted upon arrival by Thomson Holidays reps and a porter service for the luggage. The hotel reception is beautiful and we had a room overlooking the pool, which was above average size.

We were very happy with the standard of the food served in the restaurant, every day they managed to produce good quality food and a wide variety that should easily have pleased even the most awkward of palettes. The decor and overall feel of the hotel restaurant is lovely and the staff are very friendly and helpful.

The pool area is a combination of gardens and terrace with plenty sunbeds for all (although some people were still reserving sunbeds and then not coming down until the afternoon). Whilst we were there a couple of people did slip on the terrace, so caution is required. The pool is of average size, but it is more than adequate for the quantity of guests (we did feel that it could have been cleaned a little more often as we noticed paper and other debris at the bottom of it on consecutive days).

The Thomson Holidays team (entertainment staff and reps) are of the highest standard that we have experienced at any Gold hotel previously (and we have had four Gold holidays before this one). Nothing is too much trouble, they are friendly, lively and very professional in all areas. The evening entertainment that the reps provide has to be congratulated, and they give a thoroughly well polished performance. Jinxx the resident duo are a good compliment to them.

Whilst we enjoyed the entertainment in the show bar during the evening we were disappointed with the cost of the drinks -whilst we expect to pay hotel prices we also expect to receive holiday measures - in previous Gold hotels this has been the case!

Although there were a limited amount of alternatives for evenings out in the local area, they were all of the plastic furniture and umbrella type, which was not our idea of a good night out when we were dressed for dinner.

We hired a car for seven days and visited Faro, Portimao, Algarve Zoo at Lagos, Sagres, Cape St Vincent, Villamoura, Silves and Monchique and all were well worth the visit. We also went to see the sand sculptures at Pera just outside Albufeira - they are fantastic and should not be missed if you are given the chance to see them.

If you do hire a car please be aware of people harassing you for money at certain car parks that should be free. We experienced this in Villamoura and Faro, and found it quite worrying as we felt that if we did not pay then damage could have been caused to the car. We decided to drive away and find alternatives.

The holiday was exactly what we expected, and we believe that so far the Falesia Hotel has been the best all round Thomson Holidays Gold hotel that we have had the pleasure of visiting.

Book three weeks before departure Falesia hotel Acoteias Algarve Portugal,3 days car hire included.

Thomson Holidays Gold is for couples only, as a gold customer the coach took you direct from the airport to the hotel(4 star). We were met by the reps Clare & Mark who give us a verbal layout of the hotel and had porters standing by to take your luggage up to your rooms, the reception area had excellent decor, and this proved to be the case through out the hotel, the rooms were larger than average,we had asked for a pool view room when we booked and we recieved one.

There was a Thomson Holidays welcome pack in your room, the welcome meeting was excellent presented by Clare and Mark. The pool area had plenty of sun beds and a notice stateing no beds to be reserved, there was a waterfall and large garden area with three tiered pools stocked with fish. All meals were buffet style and the quality of the food was excellent with plenty of choice and friendly waiters. The Thomson Holidays entertainment team and the professional acts were again that word excellent(even Simon Cawell would have found it hard to say anything negative)Car rental was with Europcar we were given a brand new Mit/Colt we had a choice of filling the tank up before returning the car or 10% discount of a full tank and bringing the car back empty we took the second option but when we returned the car it was 1/2 full, unless you are hireing for more that 3 days dont take this option.

Only downside (1) beech is a good 20 mts away down hill, courtesy bus 4 times a day from hotel, also Acoteias is a bit out of the way,but taxi to Albufeira 15 mts e8.50 and 15mts to Vilamoura e7.00.

Over all rating excellent

My/Our Holiday Review:

Far from the maddening crowd! A couple of kilometres from the coast and about half way between Villamoura and Albufeira. There are few local facilities and a car (provided in the First Choice deal) is essential. Although set next to a road there is surprisingly little noise in Block B with Blocks A and C even further away. We had the two bedded apartment closest to the road and with the benefit of double glazing were not in the slightest bothered even when out on the terrace. The small complex was well kept with remote security gates on entry. It has two pools the second being a bit small for swimming. There is no bar or music (bliss!) although there are three communal BBQ areas. The swimming pool areas were quiet and peaceful and it is the only place that I have ever stayed where the guests return the sun bed pads and tie up the sun umbrellas!

That probably gives you some idea of the type of people who choose to stay there. It is not for clubbers or those seeking the night life of a large resort but is for those of us who crave a bit of peace and quiet in which to relax and chill out. I have marked the accommodation down purely because of its location and will hopefully be able to stay there again on our next visit to Portugal.

My/Our Holiday Review:

JUst came back form vale de carros, I would ideally recommend this place to families, the kids have had an absolutely brilliant time, loads to do on site, entertainment every evening and also a kids club in the afternoon.

The place would not be the same with out Carlos who is an inspiration to all, he involved adults and children alike day and night into water volley games in the pool, football matches, giant jenga, bowls you name it and then entertained us all at night Top bloke !!

The accomodation is clean and spacious and the balconys are big. maid service is excellant, There are only a small amount of bars and restaurants but they all serve good food at good prices. I would recommend the chinese restaurant Sol de Oiro we ate there 6 times it was so nice. Taxis however are very cheap about 7 euros to albufiera or villamoura which i would highly recommend a visit to the marina. Loads for the kids to do Zoo marine is excellant, the dolphin and sea lion shows are brilliant, Aquashow waterpark now has a watercoaster and new slides , both these parks are cheap days out and do not cost much inside for food and drink. However went to crazy world and this i would not recommend, the shows last 5 mins , you have to pay extra for activities inside even though you have paid a 20 euro entrance fee!!! Food and drink very expensive over twice as much as the other parks, the only attraction was the animals to fill in 6 hours, would not recommend the jungle golf was not what we expected either.

Excellant time had would definately return.

Basic but clean apartments. Large balcony or terrace. We went with family and children ages 8 to 16 years.

Something for all age groups. Safe for children. Well kept grounds and two decent pools. Bar food good value for money. Friendly staff. Excellent rep Gill. Excellent staff-Carlos the entertainments guy loved by all kids.

No air con in room which became very hot. We were next to road which could be noisy so kept windows closed. You can hire a fan for 10 euros plus 15 euros deposit which helped. You have to hire toaster, safety deposit key and hairdryer plus deposit. Some rooms had to hire a kettle. Two thefts of clothes and sunglasses while we were there at neighbours accomodation. This did not happen to us

Good supermarket 5 minutes walk away.

Free transfer by bus to beach but sunbed hire expensive at 12.50 euros for 2 beds

Only bus 5 minute walk away to Albufiera so limited to using taxis. Not much at this resort yet. They do have excellent chinese restaurant Sol de Oiro.

Also try Mira Parque, decent food, friendly staff. In Vilamoura try restaurant Lakhsmi- one of the best indian restaurants I have been to with a view across the marina.

My/Our Holiday Review:

Our first time in Portugal and loved every minute of it.

The apartments are very clean and comfortable with everything you need. In a quiet area but not too out of the way, you get the best of both worlds. The Falesia beach is about a 20 minute walk away but they put on a courtesy bus twice a day which you have to book the day before.

The balconies are huge plenty of room for sunbathing, the only thing I would say though is they aren't very private.

I would recommend going to the beach, the water is crystal clear with golden sands, paradise!

There are two pools which are both lovely and all the staff in the bar are very friendly.

Easy to get to Albufeira and Vilamoura by taxi, both towns only about 10 minutes away.

The local restaurant Lagosteria in Acoteias about a 2 minute walk away is lovely and the food is excellent as well as the service.

If you need to go anywhere a bit far out speak to reception as they have a minibus and may be able to do you a cheap deal.

Albufeira is really nice and has all your shops, bars and restaurants. Watch out for the time share people though, they are everywhere.

All in all, we all had a fantastic holiday and would go back in a heartbeat.

A fantasic place if you want to get away from it all. The appartment was quite spacious and had all the necessary items to make the self catering holiday comfortable. We took our own electric kettle and travel iron. The balconys are all sun traps and were large. They all had a patio table and chairs and two sun loungers so were able to sunbathe commando. Brilliant restaurant called la ecostias. Fresh fish, sword, salmon, tuna. All the cleaners were really friendly and the shop keepers were helpful.Had a great time even thought there are not really any nite clubs by the apartment.

Would definatley go there again.

The furnishings were old fashioned and a little creepy. If you want to get away from it all, this is an ideal place. If you don't mind driving to find restaurants and bars, then it will be fine too. My/Our Holiday Review:

After reading negative reviews we were pleasantly surprised when we only encountered two notable citicisms of the hotel.

To us the Tivoli Almansor lived up to its 4 stars. The bedrooms were clean an comfortable with maid service every day, clean sheets every other day and clean towels when you want them. There were also towels for the swimming pool. Tea and coffee making at no extra cost. The only down side was the bathroom that was a bit tired looking but the shower was powerful over a deep full sized bath. The view from the balcony brilliant, overlooking the cove and swimming pool(view cost exta )

The public rooms were fine, the bar being on the 5th floor with the balcony looking over the view. There are 2 computers for pulic use in the reception that give you free internet access.

Breakfast was always varied ,cooked or continental. My only complaint was that the cooked breakfast was often cold.Breakfast opens a 7am each morning for the golfers and they do not restock readily.

The swimming pool is quite large and there are also a large number of sun beds. Towels are provided. There is also an indoor pool.

As we did not eat at the hotel we walked into the village each night. There is a good selection of places to eat. We like to search out restaurants that serve good food and wine but also have an imaginative menue. We found several, notably Mymies , A Gale , Jota Lita ,Ele and Ela and An Indian restaurant , the name escapes me.

From the hotel the walk into, the village takes 10 minutes up a slight on the return.

For those that like walking there are good walks along the cliffs to 2 coves that have magical beaches. Praia Carvalho is the best, a 1/2 hour walk along a not too busy road.A car would be useful as there is onl a limited bus service.Lagos,Alvor and Silver are within easy reach.

Could not fault the accomatation lovely and spacious and clean, not to noisey at night 20 minutes walk to the strip/nightlife 10 minutes to the beach, car hire essential to explore the area although on a main bus route.Recommend booking self catering instead of half board as resturant food is very limited with only 2 choices of main course were as one will always be fish, very poor for childrens choices as well, breakfast very poor with very basic continental menu.Entertainment was very limited at night and day time entertainment/activities was non existant.

Over all a very pleasant holiday with extreme good weather for time of the year (28th Dec).

just returned from a week at the alto da colina and it was our first time in portugal,

the rooms are okay but under the beds were filthy with bits of rusks and wrappers etc the maid obviously doesnt clean under them and i wish she would when we had a baby crawling allover the floor,if you was to spend your entire time at this hotel you would have to take a fortune with you as everything about it is expensive 3 euros and 80 cents for a potion of chips and 3 euros for a lager compared to 1 euros 50 up in the strip,

the entertainment was dire first choice seem to have left these reps out on a limb and make them perform the entertainment night after night which becomes monotonous and boring, the kiddies clubs reps dont seem to like children and are not very friendly my son went and came back with a deep scratch on his head which another child had done and the reps didnt even tell us so he never went back again, potugal seems to be an unfriendly country and we wont be returning, this hotel is all about making money, do not buy anything from the on site shop as it is a total rip off but do yourself a favour and walk round to the balai plaza [the pink hotel] just around the corner and use the supermarket there as it is a third of the price!!!!!!!!

Just back from alto da colina..

The accomadation was fantastic kids clubs the best ever..the accomdation a bit out of the way so you will need to get a taxi to bars restaurants ect. which will cost about 5 euro be careful you don't get ripped off by taxi drivers..restautant in accomadation quite good..

The only down side was a lack of sun beds it was very bad it was ok on our first week but then the reps started pulling towels off sun beds at 9am in the morning which was'nt on..I have never seen this done on any other holiday i have been on..It would be ok if people had'nt come down to lie on there sun beds by 11am but not at 9am in the morning before we had even got the kids to the kids club..The reps seemed to take great pleasure in doing this..I hate to think what the situation is now in high season..Had booked to go back next year but have now cancelled it because of this..It spoiled our second week because you could'nt leave your sun bed unattended in case the reps would take towels..

All in all had a great holiday but would not go back to portugal again because i found the portugease people to be very rude.. watch out for the lady who runs the shop with the dark hair she is so rude and also the taxi drivers..Ricky who works in the bar was great fun and also the tall slim bar man don't know his name..A special mention to Antony who was head of entertainment he was fantastic..

My/Our Holiday Review:

We were allocated a 1st floor apartment overlooking the pool area. Probably one of the better locations as the balcony was massive and it was easy enough getting back to the room as you only had one flight of stairs to contend with (which was a mean enough feat with 2 inflatable dingys and all your towels, etc.,). The lifts were always very slow and often full. One thing we noticed was that despite the fact that all the entertainment was around the pool area (which we were overlooking), the apartments were very well soundproofed and there was very little noise to be heard from neighbouring apartments.

The apartment itself was very clean and well equipped - maid service was every day except Sunday - but we did notice that things were starting to look a bit grubby round the edges and the stairs were really dirty and littered for the whole 2 weeks we were there. We had lunch a couple of times in the restaurant....stuff like tuna salad, chicken salad, tomato and mozzarella and we had an evening meal there....nothing spectacular but certainly edible. We were initially put off by comments made on a review on the internet saying 'the food was awful and served by disinterested Eastern European staff'. This was rubbish. The staff were Portuguese (admittedly they do have a slight Eastern European/Czech slant to their accent) and they were very helpful and went out of their way one day to make me a fresh fruit salad as there was none already prepared.

The entertainment was ok. If you like playing cricket, football, bowls, water polo, aqua fit, killer pool and you like joining in then fill your boots, it'll be great! I prefer to do very little and remain prone on my sunbed. You weren't hassled though and it all took place away from the sunbathers so I wasn't disturbed! The swimming pool was good. Plenty big enough for everyone's inflatables, always very clean and I noticed the maids doing a chlorine check a couple of times a day.

The daily rush for the sunbed became a bit of a chore.....I think we're competing with the Germans in the heat to bag the most desirable spot around the pool. People were putting their towels out at 7am and then going back to bed for a couple of hours!! The reps got wise to it after a while and started collecting the towels up that had been left unattended for more than an hour and putting them behind reception. There is another pool complete with sun loungers and a poolside bar. It is also close to the children's play park, a little water park and the tennis court and football pitch. However, the pool is very small......a bit quieter round there though if you want to get out of the way for a bit.

The Kids Club was very good. My 8 year son went out with the reps for a whole day from 9am to 4.45pm to Krazy World and thoroughly enjoyed it. He also spent an evening at the Bugs Bunny Bash from 7pm to 10pm, giving us the chance to go out for a nice relaxed meal. There was plenty for him to do and there was also the indoor arcade games and the pool table (everything was 1 Euro).

We entered the quiz a couple fo times, which was good for a laugh but didn't really make use of the evening entertainment. We saw bits of it now and again when we returned from having gone out for a meal and it looked pretty awful but I suppose they try their best.

The worst part of the holiday had to be the location of the apartments. You are basically, out on a limb. Not wanting to spend every night stuck in the hotel restaurant, you have no choice but to either walk or get a taxi. We went to the Strip (in Albufeira) twice and it was abysmal....unless you like Blackpool! Really tacky, nasty cheap shops, lots of English chippies, Irish bars, yuk, yuk, yuk! Not really what I want when I go abroad I'm afraid.

You can walk to the Strip (apparently) and it takes 30 minutes......we walked to the beach one evening which isn't as far as the Strip and it took 20 minutes. There's a lovely restaurant down there though (at St Eulalia beach) but it gets very busy and it's probably wise to either go before 8pm or make a reservation. It's call St Eulalia Restaurant. We went to Old Town Albufeira most nights and that would probably take 40-45 minutes to walk so we got a taxi every night. To get reception to call you a taxi costs you 1 Euro. The taxi itself will set you back between 4 and 5.5 Euros. We worked out that we spent an extra £120 for our fortnight's stay purely on taxi fares. The other set back is that everyone else has the same idea. One night we spent an hour and a half in the taxi queue. The busiest time is between 6 and 8pm....the time most people want to go out for something to eat! The hotel got the minibus out one night as the queue was so bad but would only go to the Strip. It was by far the worst part of the holiday.

We went to Vilamoura one evening and went to play Super Mini Golf. It's open til 1am and it was really good. Expensive though as it was 9 Euros per person and 6 Euros per child. Vilamoura was a much nicer place to visit....more cosmopolitan than Albufeira, although we did like Albufeira Old Town. The Old Town has some lovely seafood restaurants and there's more of a continental feel about it....it has more character and atmosphere. There were street entertainers in the evening and all the shops were open til late.

There was also a small mini market at the apartments. It was ok for convenience but obviously a little pricier than the supermarket in town. It would probably be cheaper to get a taxi to the supermarket, stock up and get a taxi back than it would to get the same items from the mini market but it was fine for fresh bread rolls and milk, etc.

We went on 2 trips. One was the gypsy market in Quateira......don't bother unless you like car boot sales. The stuff they were selling was dross. The only reason it was vaguely enjoyable was that it was raining that day and it would have been better than being stuck round the pool bar back at the apartments. The other trip was the jeep safari which was one of the highlights on my holiday. The guy who was driving our jeep was toroughly entertaining and gave us a very informative guide around some of the villages in the Algarve. Even my 8 year old son enjoyed it. He told us about bits of Portuguese history, the Revolution, the cork industry, etc., and we visited a distillery. Excellent trip!

I wouldn't go to the Alto Da Colina again simply because of its location. The apartments and the amenities are great but it's let down by the fact that you're in the middle of nowhere and it's so difficult to get out and about. We toyed with the idea of getting a car but we both like a drink and the hardest part was getting a taxi to go out for a meal so we didn't think there was any point. The buses were also unreliable so you didn't have that as an option. I'd be more inclined to go to Vilamoura or somewhere round the west coast....Lagos, for example. I wasn't terribly struck on Albufeira but would definitely go to Portugal again. The food, the wine and the people are wonderful and the climate is fab....not too hot and always that bit of a breeze to keep things cool. Perfect! Bon dia!

The Alto Da Colina apartments are in the Balaia region of the Algarve between Albifura & Villamora. You couldn't fault the apartments which only opened for the winter season last year.Decor was spot on and everything was there in the apartment for your use i.e Kettle , Toaster , Microwave , 4 ring Hob. T.V & Air Con were also available for a 30 euro dep refundable when remotes handed back in. Safety dep box also avail again for a small deposit.

The swimming pools were very large apparently the largest free form pool on the Algarve ? The water was cold on the first couple of days but as the sun shone non stop daily it was soon at a nice temperature. The pool area was spotlessly clean and that went also for the indoor pool and the pool at the other side of the Hotel.Plenty of daytime activities if you wanted to join in.The onsite shop was cheaper than the supermarkets which were quite a walk from the hotel.

Not a lot of choice to eat out so you need to go into Albifura about a 20min walk or 3 to 4 euros in a taxi which the reception staff will order for you at a 60 cents fee. If like us you prefer to walk go out of the hotel turn right and follow road to junction , turn right and just keep on walking you will eventually arrive at the strip where you can find everything you want to eat & drink on one long street.

Will definately return to these apartments all the staff so friendly and the reps are there from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m everyday so any problems there is usually someone around.

This complex is barely a year old, and it shows. The apartments are excellent, clean spacious and well equipped. Every apt has a large balcony with access from the main room and the bedrooms and have either a sea or pool view. The sea view is quieter as the bar area aronud the main pool can be noisy. The amenities include 2 outdoor pools 1 with splash park, and 1 indoor with jacuzzi and sauna. There is a restaurant and bar area the food is good but more expensive than outside. The only drawback is the location, you have to be very fit to walk to the main strip where all the action is,also the beach is quite a trek over 100 steps from the Alfagar apts opposite.

On the strip there is loads to keep all ages happy, bars restaurants etc. We found the following all good value; Coyote Bar(great kareoke) Legends happy hour all night( buy one get one free) The Cottage, brill Sunday roast and the American Diner.

The only Organised trip we went on was to ZooMarine, well worth the effort if only for the Dolphins. Pay your entry then all the rides etc are free also very good eating places and very clean.

Our only complaint is that you need to drive or taxi evevywhere and at peak times you can wait for over an hour for a cab.

I would certainly recommend these apts to anyone with children ours were never bored and loved the splash park, of course as with everywhere else you have the phantom towel leavers who must get up at the crack of dawn to secure a lounger and then sleep till midday, very annoying.

Having never heard of Burgau, I was sceptacle about what I was going to. The holiday turned out to be very pleasant.

Burgau as a resort is not for the young and lively by any means what with it's laid back approach and lack of clubs etc. Local bars and restaurant's very nice, if a bit "English".

The Tempomar Apartments are a great base. We had a 2 bedroom apartment and it was massive, with the 2 bedrooms and bathroom UPSTAIRS and a lounge/diner, with seperate kitchen and downstair toilet. Balcony is standard also. Our room was excellent looking right over the pool and entertainment which was good for watching and listening to the entertainment from a far, which to be honest, is where it should be watched from!! Weekly Karaoke's and Barbequeues seemed to be most popular with returning guests.

The Weather was OK, but I did not like the wind, Burgau seems to attract it, I felt it spoilt my holiday, go further inland, or further along the coast to Albufeira for the heat.

Overall, a good Holiday, but it just cannot compete with the fabby PUEBLO INDALO in Costa de Almeria, a must for anyone.

Definately a car hotel, if you don't have one then its a long walk anywhere of note.

Hotel , a 4* was fantastic, has a rooftop sunbathing area, a gym and jacuzzi.

Downstairs was the main pool, 5 smaller pools representing a foot and toes. Unfortunately because of the time of year the water was too cold to swim in, however there is also a volleyball court, bouncy castle, nice sun lounge area.

Food was half board basis but again due to time of year, should have been buffet style, but was limited to 2 choices of each meal. In saying that the choices were very nice. Breakfast was heated in large containers heated by candles, not the hottest food, but selection was fine.

Room was excellent, 1 double room, a lounge that doubles as 2nd bedroom and kitchen, and a bathroom.

Large rooms were heated/cooled by nice air con units which were adjustable by remote control.

View from room was great, we had a view overlooking the salt plains, the tide came in everyday and flooded the views.

There is a nice beach, however you need to get a boat (1 euro return), this is to cross the estuary and the salt flats.

Cabanas is a nice town, however it isn't really a tourist area, so don't expect too much.

Albafuera is a 45 min drive from Cabanas, with Tavira, another nice portugese town just 5 mins away.

All in all, a great place to stay with a car, if you want entertainment however it won't be for you, stick to Albafuera for the nightlife.

We found the Piano Bar fine the people in there couldn't do enough for us and the children and the Pizzeria Take Away has the most friendly people and nice food in the whole of the area. My/Our Holiday Review:

This was our first visit to The Algarve and booked our holiday via teletext. We flew via Thomson Holidays but were advised to Taxi to the resort of Cabanas, Tavira. The Journey cost us 45 euro which wasnt too bad considering the distance we travelled and that there was four in the taxi, we remarked how green everything was.

On arrival at the Golden Club Cabanas we were allocated to our rooms. I think utter shock was the only way to describe the accomodation, it was a 2 storey apartment with a set of the steepest "ladders" I have ever seen leading to the upstairs that housed 2 beds and a toilet room, 2 beds in the lounge with a kitchen area and a small bathroom were downstairs. 2 potable gas filled radiators where the only form of heat for these apartments.

We had booked an All Inclusive Holiday but this was by far the worst All Inclusive deal ever imaginable !! The food was poor with very little variety often served luke warm, entertainment was laughable, we got a magic show during out first evening meal (the cabaret is also in the dining room). The most unpolite steward served in the bar and it was one drink per person and please take back an empty glass before you get another one !! The bar closes promptly at 11pm and you cant purchase another drink in the complex after that time, which meant everybody was tucked up in bed before midnight (not bad if your on a honeymoon I suppose, but as the beds are single then I think again)

To pool area is very nice, the indoor pool is warm but you must purchase a rubber hat and swim in that if you wish to use the indoor pool. To get to the beach you must firstly cross the river by a small boat then trudge to the beach itself and it wasnt the cleanest of beaches and no facilities.

Cabanas has very little to offer, thankfully there is a great cafe called The Little Orange, this served some lovely meals and the owners from Yorkshire made us very welcome and went that extra mile for us, we ate there for 4 of the nights and enjoyed the take out home made pies during the day. Tavira is the nearest shopping town but has very little to offer, we took a day trip to Albufuira that cost 60 euros for the four of us, 2 trains and 2 taxis.

We could not recommend this holiday to anyone, we even filled in the Official Complaint Form that the Government for Portugal introduced, we wont be returning to Cabanas and we certainly wont be using Med Hotels again

My/Our Holiday Review:

Having just returned from probably the worst holiday we have experienced, I advise anybody thinking of booking this accomodation through Thomas Cook/JMC to think again.

This should have been a special holiday as it was our first time abroad with our lovely 15 month old daughter. However, due to the dank and damp state of our accomodation we have all returned ill with chest infections. The bungalow we were allocated was split on two levels and was completely unsafe for toddlers. Likewise with the roof terrace which had wide turrett-like openings which easily would have enabled a child to fall through with a 20ft drop. The beds/couch had a concrete base with a piece of hardboard covering god only knows what. The cot was at least 50 years old and looked like it belonged in a Romanian orphanage, a baby could easily fit its head through the bars. We had rain a couple of nights and this resulted in musical beds throughout the night due to the rain coming in through the ceiling. Needless to say, our unhelpful rep was uninterested in anything we had to say.

We had a three ring hob and oven that did not work so, so much for self catering.

Cabanas itself is not your typical holiday resort. If you are looking for nice restaurants with delightful views, this is not the place to go. The few restaurants the resort has are in side streets and are more like cafes than restaurants. The menus consist of fish then a couple of meat dishes, there is not much variety of dishes to choose from.

The resort is quite dirty and smelly and really could be a lot better with some investment. There does appear to be a lot of building work taking place but these mainly seem to be apartments rather than improving the resort centre. The beach is nice - once you get there and it's not at all busy.

Overall, even if you are after a peaceful and quiet holiday, we would not recommend Pedras Da Rainha at all.

My/Our Holiday Review:

Just returned from a week at Pedras De Rainha, Cabanas, and had a great time.

The accommodation was excellent, we were placed in a small villa apartment with its own terrace, in a beautiful location.

The apartment had air conditioning, a microwave, an oven, and a satellite TV. The air conditioning being the most appreciated due to the extremely high temperatures (in the 90's).

The staff in Reception were extremely helpful and friendly at all times.

Cabanas is a very quaint old town, and is very portuguese, so if you want English bars, it is not the place to go. We went into one of the portuguese bars located on a side street, and it cost us 1 euro 60, for two bottles of beer (about £1.10).

We would definitely go again.

My/Our Holiday Review:

We booked a two bedroom semi-detached villa, surrounded by well kept lawns, shrubs, flowers and mature trees.

The various apartments are mostly privately owned and ours was the most comfortable, spacious and best equipped that we have yet been in.

The large complex is quiet, safe, clean and very well run. Staff were friendly and helpful.

Safety deposit boxes are available at reception, where you can also hire sunloungers around the pool for about e7/week.

The swimming pool is deep one end and shallow the other with room for everyone.

The restaurant did less business than those in the nearby village and the bar charged ?1 more for a smaller beer.

The village supermarket was cheaper than the complex but still dearer than those in nearby towns.

Cabanas has a number of average restaurants serving much the same selection of uninspiring food. Pedros is slightly upmarket, "Nicola" was friendly with good food and "Europa" was perhaps the best all round value.

The long, safe, excellent beach is reached by small boat from the waterfront near Pedros and the strip of water is quite polluted.

Day trips are plentiful and much cheaper through reception than the company Rep. The boat trip up the river on the Spanish border was good value and included a filling lunch with virtually unlimited wine.

The local railway has regular trains at low fares. You cannot go wrong on the single line, but make sure the station is near your desired destination first. Taxis are plentiful and cheap.

An ideal location for a very quiet, relaxing family holiday.

My/Our Holiday Review:

We had an excellent holiday in Cabanas, which is at the eastern end of the Algarve (between Tavira and the Spanish border). Our opinion of the place is FAR more positive than those of the couple of other people who have posted reviews of Cabanas.

Cabanas is a small resort, albeit one that is being developed rapidly. At its heart it is still a traditional fishing village, rather than simply a modern holiday complex. The beach, on a sand-spit just off the coast and reached by small boat, is superb. (The boat trip takes just a couple of minutes, costs 1 Euro return fare, and in summer the boats ply back and forth constantly, so waiting time is minimal - unlike in Tavira). The fish restaurants are excellent; our recommendations are Dona Ines in the main street, and Pedro and - when it's open - Solmar along the waterfront. (At the latter two, try the wonderful peixe espada, = scabbard fish).

Cabanas is for people who appreciate a relaxed, authentic atmosphere - not for those looking for noisy night-clubs and Sky TV football screens in every bar. We and our children (aged 11 and 9) really, really liked it, and will go back again. We especially liked the fact that most of the holidaymakers on the beach were good-looking and nicely-behaved Portuguese couples and families, with a smattering of various other European nationalities and not too many Brits!!

We booked flights through Easyjet to Faro, and car-hire (which is only necessary if you want to travel around - e.g. we went to Seville for a couple of days, inland to Evora, and spent a day at the Aqualand water-park - but not needed if you plan to spend all your time in Cabanas) through Drive/Sixt ... both problem-free.

However, the real coup was booking our accommodation on the internet run by a guy who was friendly and efficient to deal with. We had a top-floor apartment with two sun terraces and two bedrooms, which was spacious, comfortable and well-equipped, and only a short walk from the boats to the beach and the town centre. A decent-sized private swimming pool is shared with other apartments in the block, and never got too busy. It was just about the best holiday accommodation we've ever stayed in, and great value at 420 Euros a week in peak season.

Like Cabanas itself, we'd recommend it to others, and would have no hesitation in using it again ourselves.

My/Our Holiday Review:

We had stayed at the Almansor in March 2003 and had a lovely time, so as the Almansor was doing a winter discount we decided to go there again. We hired a car in Lisbon, where we had spent three days, and drove down to the Algarve using the toll road. We saw hardly any other traffic - it was definitely worth the 17.25 euros toll. We booked this trip independently - flying out to Lisbon and back from Faro.

As the price of the room at this time of the year was so good, we decided to pay a bit extra for a sea view. We weren't disappointed - our room looked out over the impressive cliffs and the sea. We got sun on our balcony most of the afternoon. The room was big, with a comfortable double bed. The bathroom was also big, with complimentary toiletries. The shower had good pressure - my only complaint was the shower curtain, which allowed water to go onto the floor. The temperature in the room was comfortable. It got quite cold outside in early March, but we were never cold in the room.

Breakfast was included in the price and it was impressive. The breakfast is buffet-style and there is something for everyone, ranging from healthy options and allergen-free foods to a fried breakfast. My favourite was the walnut bread.

It was a bit too cold to sit around the outdoor pool, although some people were on the sunloungers. The indoor pool also has sunloungers around it. I swam in the indoor pool every day, but it is quite small, so if there are other people in it, it's hard to swim properly. The jacuzzi is attached to the pool, so it is the same temperature as the pool water, but the water jets work effectively. The jacuzzi tended to have parents with very small children in it most of the time, so it was hard to find a space. There is also a sauna and a steam room, which I used most days (except the Friday, when the hotel suddenly became busy with weekend guests, I guess).

There are also two lounges that are open all day - one lounge has a TV and a pool table, plus some other games, such as chess. The other lounge is where the bar is and has evening entertainment (usually a singer playing an electric piano). There is a terrace outside this bar which overlooks the sea and gets the sun on it in the afternoon. You could spend you whole time in the hotel if the weather was bad, as there are plenty of things to do!

We did leave the hotel - walking down the hill into the village of Carvoeiro. This hill is where most of the restaurants are. At the bottom of the hill on the corner is a bar run by an English woman called 'Smilers'. We had lunch here a couple of times. In the evenings we ate at a different restaurant each night. Our favourites were Maximes, A Lanterna Velha (both on the road going into Carvoeiro) and La Mona Lisa (pizza restaurant) - turn right out of the hotel and walk for about 5 minutes. Prices aren't cheap, however. We paid 40 euros for a meal at A Lanterna Velha for 2 main course, 1 dessert and a bottle of wine.

We also walked out of the hotel by the outdoor pool and by turning either right or left you can go for bracing walks over the cliffs. If you turn right you can walk all the way into Carvoeiro over the cliffs and by the sea.

Carvoeiro is a small village, which has retained its character, despite tourism. We drove down to Albufeira one day and were shocked at how commercial that part of the Algarave is - ugly hotels and bars and restaurants catering for Brits abroad. I would definitely return to Carvoeiro and to the Almansor.

Just a word of warning - when we got our bill we were charged 15 euros for something called 'cofres'. As we don't speak Portuguese we didn't find out what it was for until we got home. It turned out that it was for the safety deposit box (which we didn't use).

My/Our Holiday Review:

This was our fourth visit to Carvoeiro and our second to the Almansor. It was our first holiday with a baby so we wanted to go somewhere we knew and liked.

We paid for (and got) a lovely seaview - we were square on to the sea and the views are stunning. The hotel room was kept very clean and unlike a previous review we did not have to pay for tea or coffe facilities. As has been said telly choice poor but you don't go on holiday to watch telly!

We ate in one night which was a buffet with an excellent cold selection and a fair choice of hot too. Also nice selection of deserts. Baby was more than welcome and staff throughout could not have been friendlier with her. Highchairs were available. The staff here were excellent. Breakfast was the usual and you could get pretty much anything. You could also have a freshly made omelette cooked by the chef in front of you.

The resort looked a bit more "tired" than usual and not as neatly painted/ tidy as in previous years. We walked up and down to the town every day and night with a buggy. The pavement is a bit rough for this - funny how you never notice this pre buggy! The resort was very quiet for May but the choice of restaurants was excellent as always. We didn't have a poor meal. Baby welcome everywhere and we always got a highchair. Particularly recommended were Casa Algarvia - very reasonable prices, fantastic Piri Piri Chicken, Chicos on the right hand side going down from the Mirachoro - this was very quiet but the food excellent and the staff very very friendly & super service. Our absolute favourite though has to remain Jota Litas (on the LHS of hill going down quite near the bottom before the chinese)- I cannot recommend this place highly enough for fantastic friendly service great atmosphere and top class food. The owner is very friendly as is the main waitress (they are a bit of a comedy double act!) and our little girl had a lovely time here.

The only thing we would have changed? Better weather but you can't have everything!

Big negative to the holiday company, Classic Collection though who did NOT provide a car seat for the return transfer despite this being a condition of the booking. I think car seats can be a bit of a problem here as we spoke to people who had hired cars too who had a real problem with availability/ standard & fitting of them. Might be better to take one with you....

My first visit to Carvoeiro, and i'll definately be going back. The Hotel was very nice, the air-con was a blessing! The staff were very friendly, and couldn't do enough to help (especially the bar staff, watch out for them feeding the seagulls by hand in the main bar!). The food in the restaurant was very nice, but we only ate there 3 times, preferring to enjoy the many restuarants on the way down into the resort.

Amongst the favourites were the L'Orange restaurant and a small chinese restaurant on the right hand side on your way down the hill (cant remember the name!). And if you really must have a full english (not the kind you usually get in hotels abroad) try Jokers bar on the left hand side of the hill going into the resort, highly recommended.

There's plenty to do, well worth trying a dive if you have the time.

Weather was scorching as expected.

All in, a very satisfying holiday!

Resort- lovely place. small sandy beach with no sunbeds, but worth going on - the waves were something to be seen - not beach to take little ones on if they like going into the sea, a bit too rough for that! resort centre is in a valley, with hills on both side - its worth going up the hill on the left of the beach - go past the church and school and walk through the carpark - just below you there is a little cafe - have a walk and see the views from down there - amazing. further along is another beach, you can't get down to it but the way the sea as eroded the rocks away has to be seen.

Weather - fantastic 28 everyday- no rain -only poor day was the day we were leaving!

Hotel - BB, breakfast was fantastic - no need to eat during the day, the bread rolls were to die for!!!!. small bar area, but a hugh seating area in reception. rooms were disappointing - awoid rooms 116-119 and 216-219. these all look into the courtyard so dont get any sun!!!! they were damp!!! the beds were damp and your cloths became damp. we got an electric heater to dry the place out but still felt damp, condensation was aproblem, the floors were saking wet in the morning. feedback from other guest, the other rooms were better.

Food - didnt have bad meal - in fact would go so far as saying i hade the best foos i have every tasted, however not cheap. i would recommend the Tia Ilda up the hill on the right of the beach - absolutly fantastic, steak done to perfection.

yes we would stay in the resort and at the hotel - but just make sure you put a request in for a sea view room - pay if you have too it is really worth it!

Hotel ideally situated on the square a stones throw away from the beach. We had bed & breakfast which was self service with full english. The hotel was very clean with a balcony overlooking the square.About 50 rooms and nothing is more than 4 high. There was entertainment on in the square every night but it stopped before 12 so it didn't cause a problem with getting your beauty sleep.

The hotel had a pool which was pretty basic but the beach was just across the square in a little cove. You can take a boat trip on a sunday with the local fishermen to see the caves. There were nice coastal walks with little benches so that you could stop & admire the views. There were plenty of bars, some with entertainment & the choice of eating places was very good.We liked the chinese & the big restuarant on the square that had an ice crean parlour,a bit for snacks & childrens menu & a lovely restuarant upstairs overlooking the square. The staff were friendly & the sevice was excellent. The resort catered for families & couples & the kids liked to have a dance in the square at night.THere were a couple of discos for the ravers.

The resort was just the right size, not too quiet but not in your face either.

This was our first trip to Portugal & i'm sure we will be going back.

Pool area small and overlooked by apartments but still pleasant, sunbeds with foam mattress comfortable, pool heated. Best things about the hotel were happy hour between 6-7pm and the location, brilliant no big hills when walking home after a night out! My/Our Holiday Review:

Had an excellent holiday in the very well appointed Casa-Penn apartment, which was very spacious and homely, the new kitchen and bathroom are stunning. The delicious air conditioning was very welcome after catching some rays on the sun terrace.

The Rocha Brava complex is extremely well kept, clean and has a nice serenity about it, feels very classy. The 3 swimming pools are all good and each have separate kiddie paddling pools.

The resort restaurant is excellent and I can definitely recommend their Chateuabriand and rack of lamb which were delicious, the house red wasn't bad either !!! Theres also a very pleasant cafe on site which has a nice friendly atmosphere and provides meals and drinks all day.

The Reception staff at the complex couldn't be more helpful, nothing was too much trouble. There is a free bus down to Carvoeiro 3 times a day.

The tennis courts have a very good surface and are well maintained.

Theres also some very picturesque beaches close by esp the beautiful Marinha beach.

Vale do Milho 9 hole golf course is literally across the road from the complex and provides a good test of golf for a par 3 course. The Pestana golf complex is c 5km away and has 2 excellent big boys courses.

If you like water parks you won't be disappointed, theres the Aqualand with the "Big One" slide if your trunks are up to it, mine were upto my armpits !!! Theres also the Slide and Splash nearby.

Zoomarine (Dolpinarium and much more) in nearby Guia is definitely worth a visit and our nephew adored Krazyworld zoo.

Carvoeiro village which is a short taxi ride away (3km) is very pretty and has a wealth of nice restaurants, it was difficult to choose where to eat as there are so many good ones. Theres also lots of bars and some interesting shops to peruse.

All in all, couldn't fault the holiday

My/Our Holiday Review:

This is the third time that we have stayed in Carvoeiro and each time we have had a super holiday. The weather at this time of year is fantastic, with hot sunny days and slightly cooler evenings. Most days there is a gentle breeze blowing which means that the heat is bearable.

This year we stayed at the Casa Vila Lenora which sleeps 6. The accomodation was spotlessly clean on arrival and it was kept that way by our very conscientious maid, who called four times per week, staying on average 3 hours each time. A pool maintenance man and gardener also called once per week. Our one complaint about the Villa is that the outside needs a coat of paint, especially around the pool and patio areas where in some places the paint had come away from the walls, leaving it looking very tired and mottly.

The villa was approximately a 15 minute walk from Carvoeiro, although to the centre was about 20 minutes, the last section being downhill. Carvoeiro offers a multitude of restaurants and cafes - our firm favourite being O Chefe Antonio where there is excellent food, lots of it and good value for money.

Beach in centre - downhill from all directions - lovely sand but very crowded in summer.

Favourite places to visit:

Zoomarine - swim with the dolphins - absolutely fantastic. Needs to be booked in advance and must be aged 8 or over (childrens passports checked for age).

Ferragudo beach - by castle with shade in the morning.

Monte Clerigo beach - west coast - super with loads of space even in summer - Atlantic rollers if you want them but take a jumper, even in summer - very windy!

Lagos - lots of shops and restaurants - narrow cobbled streets.

Alvor - lovely promenade with cafes, big beach, cafes/restaurants.

Ferragudo by "chu - chu train" - leaves Carvoeiro square (behind beach) at 11.00 a.m. on Tuesdays and Fridays to go to Ferragudo, leaving Ferragudo at 2.00 p.m. for return. Cost 10 euros each - book in resort directly with driver in advance.

Slide and Splash water park at Lagoa - very busy and crowded with limited shade but great fun if you like the water.

Once again we had an excellent car from Europcar which we booked independently of Thomson Holidays as it was considerably cheaper - just book the villa and flight through Thomson Holidays and then phone Europcar UK to make a car booking.

My/Our Holiday Review:

This was our first trip to Carvoeiro but it is unlikely that we will be back. The apartment at Collina da Lapa was very spacious and well equipped with a full size oven, washing machine, ironing board, iron and hair dryer plus air conditioning which was much appreciated. The pillows were dreadful with the texture of frogspawn but not as soft!

The main swimming pool was excellent, it does not get too deep at any point and a large part of the pool was shallow enough for our youngest to stand up. There were plenty of sun beds and not too much difficulty getting one, particularly if you do not want to be right next to the pool. The best shade is provided by the plentiful Carob trees but be prepared for the odd Carob bean to fall on you when the breeze gets up. There is a pool side bar which provides basic food but service can be very slow (45 minutes to get a sandwich, or the time it took us 2 hours from sitting down to completing a meal of 2 hot dogs and 2 toasted sandwiches). There is a mini market with the emphasis on mini. The staff were generally less friendly than other places we have been although there were a couple of exceptions.

The restaurant on site was nice enough but again service was very slow, I know that I am holiday to relax but this was just too slow. There is a small pizzeria 15 minutes walk away and I saw a bar a further 5 minutes walk but nothing else that in the way of eating places within walking distance.

The issue with Collina da Lapa is the location, it is well away from Carvoeiro (it is actually in Sesmarias) and you need either a taxi or a rental car. The reception will call a taxi for you but you may well have a long wait, we waited for an hour on one occasion and 90 minutes on another. The locals admit that there are simply not enough taxis in high season and that a long wait is inevitable. When we booked with Cosmos we raised our concern about how far out it is and they said that there would be no problem as there are plenty of taxis, the Cosmos rep was of no use when we raised the issue effectively saying "what do you expect me to do about it". The only way around this is to either go out early (6pm) or get a hire car.

The nearest beach is not realistically walking distance in the heat although there is a courtesy bus laid on which drops off at 9:15 and picks up at 3:00. There is a restaurant on the beach but we found that it had to be booked in advance to be able to eat at lunch time. There are larger beaches further away that the bus also visits but we did not try these.

Carvoeiro itself was slightly disappointing after all of the hype about it being a small fishing village. It is very busy and choked with cars, many of the roads are very narrow and walking along them is a risky business especially if you have small children or worse still a buggy! There was all the usual tat on sale but most of the town centre is about eating.

We never had a bad meal wherever we ate, however I would single out Xico Ze where the Clams Algarvia were excellent, L'anterna Velha was very good and Jota Lita where the food was very good and the staff great with kids. All of these are on the main hill going up from the square. The good restaurants get busy so you either need patience or to get there early.

Just got back from a brilliant holiday in the Colina Da Lapas resort! Truly didn't want to come home.

The appartments are very well equipped. We had everything we could possible have needed throughout the holiday. We had a one bedroom appartment, so 2 people in single beds in the bedroom and one on the sofa bed. The sofa bed was very comfy though (apart from the rubbish pillows)!!

The staff are all absolutely lovely. Particularly Nelson on the bar!! He helped us discover a love for Mateus Rose!!

The appartments are about 5 euros in a taxi from Carvoeiro where there are some lovely restaurants. Our favourite was Via Italia where the food is gorgeous and the staff are lovely. We also tried Caso de Bife where the steaks were really nice. The only concern we had was having to wear bibs whilst eating to stop the steak from spitting when it is cooking on the 'stone' on the table in front of you.

As far as bars go we liked the Coctail bar Havana, Mungoes and the best coctails ever in Innside Cafe Bar.

All in all a great, relaxing holiday. Not the place to go though if you are looking for lots of busy nightlife though.

Thanks to everyone at the Colina Da Lapas though!!!! Will definitely go back!!!!!!

My/Our Holiday Review:

This is my second visit to the Colina Da Lapa complex in 3 years. It is the only accomodation I have ever revisited! I submitted a review in July 2004 and little has changed since the review. There are some points I would like raise however.

This is the first holiday I have booked completely independently and I was a little nervous. I believe i saved a significant amout of money by doing so and it went like clockwork. 5 x Flights via easyjet from Liverpool £750 (I could have saved £150 on this price if I had booked earlier doh!)2 weeks accomodation in a 2 bed Villa £686 via checkin2.com Return airport transer 118E Faro Airport transfers. Overall cost around £1500 for 3x adults and 2 children. I believe this was excellent value for money considering the quality of the accomodation.

The Complex is still beautiful and the semi detached villas are of a high standard. The maid service is thorough and the staff on the 24 hour reception desk are extremely helpful. I had little contact with Cosmos reps on site but they appeared to do little other than attempt to sell trips (no shock there)

The weather in September was generally good however cooler than expected. Daytime temps ranged from 70'-85' although cool winds made it sometimes feel in the 60's. Night-time temps fell well into the 60's almost every night and I would recommed long trousers and shirts and possibly jackets for the sensitive.

September is clearly out of season in Carvoiero and there was little entertainment laid on in the centre unlike in July. I have a young family and did not have too many problems amusing the kids, however I would not have liked to try and amuse teenagers. The Colina da Lapa complex itself has little entertainment for kids or teenagers, and to be fair I saw very few children aged 8-16 in the complex. This does help keep the noise down. The complex does have a kids club and sandy play area for young children.

The pool is still very cold and deters many from swimming - the site shop is still sparse and very expensive. These are probably my only real critisisms of the complex (this has to be good)

We went to slide and splash and had a great day out - the water park was practically empty. This is a slight exageration but we never had to wait more than 1-2 minutes to get on a ride - brilliant but tiring!

The beaches at Carvoiero and carneiros are beautiful and scenic. The sea currents are quite strong at carneiros and young children need to be watched closely.

Taxis cost between 5E - 7E to get into the centre and were regular - better than in July.

In short if you are looking for a quite break with the luxuries of home the Colina Da Lapa is for you. If you need constantly amusing with activities and nightlife it probably is not. It does not cater well for teens and this can be viewed as a good or bad thing depending on your point of view.

I noticed a massive contrast in the resort between July and September and please take this into account before booking. Know what you want from your holiday prior to booking to avoid possible disappointment.

Would i go back to the Colina da Lapa / Carvoiero - Yes Yes Yes!!!!
